Felix Wiedwald’s Bundesliga form doesn’t bode well for Leeds United amid reports

Werder Bremen goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald is hardly the safest pair of hands – making Leeds United’s interest questionable to say the least.

If you see football purely as a spectacle for entertainment purposes, get yourself down to Werder Bremen. Whether Max Kruse is banging them in at one end or the North German thespians are haemorrhaging them at the other, you’re almost guaranteed goals.

And that is as much a credit to Kruse’s lethal finishing as it is a criticism of Felix Wieldwald’s ability to keep his sheet clean.

The Bundesliga has become something of a breeding ground for Europe’s top young goalkeepers in recent seasons with Bernd Leno, Marc-Andre Ter-Stegen and Timo Horn graduating with flying colours through the hipster’s favourite finishing school.

However, it’s fair to say Bremen shot-stopper Wiedwald is not held in such high regard. In 25 Bundesliga games in 2016/17, the former Germany Under-20 international was beaten 51 times.

And, in fact, he’s only the club’s number one by proxy. Essentially veteran Jaroslav Drobny and the error-ridden Raphael Wolf are even shakier between the sticks than a goalkeeper whose close-range reflexes leave plenty to be desired.

Therefore, a report by German publication Sporx claiming that Leeds United will challenge Championship rivals Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Norwich City for his signature won’t go down well with Whites supporters up to date with Bundesliga football.

The Express claimed recently that Manchester United shot-stopper Sam Johnstone was a primary target for Leeds as they look for a long-term successor for 37-year-old Rob Green.

However, with a number of Premier League clubs in the mix as well as Aston Villa, where Johnstone enjoyed a fine loan spell last season, it makes sense for Leeds to draw up a contingency plan.

Yet, there’s little reason to believe that Wiedwald would be the safe pair of hands they are crying out for. Leeds, you have been warned.
