A former Sheffield United player has deleted a tweet in which he called Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal a ‘boring t**t’.

Kevin Gage, who spent five years on the Blades’ books during the 1990s, made the comment after Carvalhal’s speech at Wednesday night’s Sheffield Star Football Awards.

Unsurprisingly, the post prompted a strong reaction from Wednesday fans on social media, with several describing his remarks as ‘classless’.

Though Gage – who is employed as the Star’s Blades columnist – later deleted the initial tweet, his explanation remains accessible.

It reads: “Just tweeting feelings of most of the people in room as he went on a bit. He may be a top manager, but tonite, a bit boring.”

Carvalhal, for whom English is not a first language, has gained a reputation for providing long-winded but charming responses in press conferences during his first two seasons at Hillsborough.

And the Portuguese coach, whose Owls side remain on course for promotion to the Premier League, had earlier taken time to praise rival club bosses Chris Wilder (Sheffield United) and Darren Ferguson (Doncaster Rovers) for their achievements this campaign.

Gage, in contrast, has recently tweeted about a sexually explicit video said to involve the mother of a well-known Premier League footballer, and championed a post from controversial Sun columnist Katie Hopkins regarding Sheffield United’s signing of Ched Evans – so make of that what you will.

Will Sheffield Wednesday make it a hat-trick of promotions for South Yorkshire’s football teams this season?
