A recipe for resilience

When Bella Bucchiotti started her blog xoxoBella back in 2015, she was just 17 years old and still in high school. But unlike most teens, Bella was into something a bit more old school: recipes.

"I started my blog to share my favorite recipes with friends and family," she says. "I’ve always loved food and photography.”

And it’s often that photography that draws readers in first. Just check out some fan favorites such as her lemon posset brulee, hamburger steak and gravy, or Italian drunken noodles.

As someone with a learning disability, Bella did find academics somewhat of a challenge. But in the kitchen? That was her comfort zone.

There, she could experiment, create, and of course, share. Her mom, a pioneer from the early days of "mom blogging,” had always been an inspiration, especially for the name of the blog itself: xoxoBella, chosen so that the blog could always grow and flex as Bella grows and changes herself.

"We wanted a name that didn’t box me in. I was considering something like Tulle & Cookies," Bella laughs. "But xoxoBella allowed for recipes, crafts, travel, whatever I wanted to explore."

And explore she did.

What began as a food blog quickly expanded to include other subjects: travel, sustainability, pets, crafts — you name it. Bella's curiosity became her compass, and (just like mom anticipated) her blog grew as she did.

Cooking up a business

As her audience grew, Bella began to think more seriously about the business side of things. So she started experimenting outside of the kitchen too, with sponsored posts, but ultimately found them too unpredictable.

What she really needed was a model that gave her both financial stability and creative freedom.

"I was hesitant at first," she admits. "I thought ads might ruin the user experience. But once I got started, I realized it was one of the best decisions I could've made."

These days, Bella partners with Raptive, a Google Certified Publishing Partner. "Ad revenue gave me the ability to grow my blog exponentially," she explains. "It allowed me to keep the content free while actually building a business."

With income from ads, Bella was able to even hire help, freeing her time up to focus on content creation while also taking some well earned time off after becoming a new mom. Ads gave her what every entrepreneur needs: some breathing room.

"Honestly, I don’t know why I waited so long," Bella says about her journey with ads. "It’s given me consistency. It’s given me security. I don’t have to chase every sponsorship. I can just focus on what I love: creating."

Room to grow

Nowadays, Bella continues to post regularly and engages with her audience across different social platforms. She's also thinking about what's next: perhaps more parenting content, or deeper dives into family life with her readers.

"The blog has always grown with me," she reflects. "Now that I'm a mom myself, I'm thinking about what kind of content would serve both my readers and my own changing interests.”

And it’s thanks to the ad-based business model, that she’s got the flexibility to explore.

"The internet can be tough, but ads make it possible for people like me to keep doing what we love, without charging readers for it."

Bella is excited for what might be around the corner for her and xoxoBella. Whether it’s exploring life as a young mom or adapting to an ever changing digital landscape, she stays grounded by her mission.

"My blog is not just about sharing recipes but also about inspiring others to pursue their passion for cooking," she says. "I believe that anyone can cook, regardless of their skill level or background, and that’s why I strive to create recipes that are easy to follow and accessible to everyone."
