What is Ultimate?

Ultimate Frisbee is a non contact, possession based team sport. The objective: Catch the frisbee within your designated scoring zone, located at the ends of the pitch.

Each team begins on opposite ends of the field, and play is initiated with a ‘pull’ where you give possession to the opposing team for a chance to score. You lose possession of the disc when:

  • You drop the disc.
  • An opponent intercepts it
  • The disc touches the ground before you have control over it.
  • You hold on to the disc for more than ten seconds.

There are no referees – Ultimate is a game of integrity, communication, and respect. This is exemplified in what we call the Spirit of the Game, and it is what really makes this sport so special.

There are a several different international level tournaments for Ultimate that allow competition between national teams, clubs, and even youth teams. The World Under-24 Ultimate Championship happens every two years, where the best players in the country are selected through gruelling trial processes, train together, and represent their country on an international stage.

It’s super simple to get started. Find out more about Ultimate in the UK and get involved!

Nice to meet you

The opportunity to play on an international level is a dream come true.

“Does it have a frisbee team?”
That was one of the factors that I had subconsciously taken into account when it came to deciding which high school I’d like to spend two years of my life in. I have only ever thrown a disc a couple of times at that point and had no idea what the game was even about, but something about Ultimate had made me actively seek it out and get involved. That was undoubtedly one of the best decisions of my life.

It has been six years since I first started playing, and have been part of this great community of ultimate players in the UK in the last four. I’ve played for club teams including Crown Jewels, Shiok, and most recently Deep Space. I am honoured to have been offered this opportunity to represent Great Britain at Under-24 World Ultimate Championships in January 2018, and am incredibly thankful to everyone who had been part of this adventure of mine. This is the last U24 cycle which I’d be eligible for, and I would definitely try and make the most of it.

To more adventures ahead. This is only the beginning.

Private: Cost Breakdown

Ultimate is growing, but the funding for it is still lacking and unfortunately much of the costs fall back onto the players. Throughout this season, the first in which I’ve played elite ultimate, I have noticed a significant increase in my Ultimate expenses. This includes travelling all over the country for training weekends, going to national tournaments for more playing experiences together as a team, and player fees required to just participate!

Here is a breakdown of the costs involved in every GBU24 player’s #roadtoperth:

£800

Accommodation
£150

Trial fees

Travelling to trainings
£200

Player fees
£300

Fundraising Progress: £335.53/1000.00
