and tell us what you think.
Our Facebook page is also very active: www.facebook.com/quedgeleynews, Like
Looking for members or volunteers for your group? We can help promote it via
Quedgeley News on our website and on our Facebook page.
Is your club of group looking for money? Quedgeley Community Trust last year received
£18k from the profits of Quedgeley News. This allows us to make grants to
local clubs, schools and groups. It is really simple to request a form.
Quedgley Community Trust also plays a very active role in a huge variety of other
local groups and partnerships, including being the driving force behind the establishment
of the very successful Q Club.
Letter to the Editor :
Contact details for Quedgeley News are at the bottom of this page
Mr.Ponting pontificates that no letters to the Editor appear now in QN since Sandra's
retirement. He says, why are letters not published? Has he considered that within
this community maybe no-one has written letters to debate. Has he proof that QN
refuses to print their input (his words, not mine)? I notice that his letter to the Editor
on Page 5 of the December issue got printed. I always get printed if I write something.
Lighten up Mr. Ponting, Dave Talbot has given his reply for us to read. Similar
regards, Pam Seally (Mrs)
St Jame’s Christmas Fayre, A great success
St Jame’s Christmas Fayre raised £1,099.28 in profit for St.Jame’s Church to help
towards costly repairs needed very soon. Grateful thanks and appreciation to all
those people who participated by donating goods, helping with stalls and just being
there on the day in such bad weather. Many thanks to all businesses who provided
such super raffle prizes. Thanks QN for the advertising and Radio Gloucester and
Severn FM. Christmas Joy to all, Pam Seally
A big Thankyou from Quedgeley Methodist Church
A great day was had at the Christmas Fayre on 1st December.
In total over £900 was raised. Quedgeley Methodist Church would like to say a Big
thank you and a Happy New Year.
An update from the Royal British Legion
The Poppy Appeal rush is now over and all indications
show that we are on a par with last
year which was a record. Remembrance Sunday
was a little different as most of the Branch
and the Branch Standard went to the war memorial
at Gloucester Park. Those who chose
not to go attended our usual ceremony in
Tesco’s at 11am on 11th November. This year
we were honoured to have a contingent from
the Royal Pioneer Corps based at the ARRC
at Innsworth. Two of them
were in ceremonial uniform and shouldering silver axes. The arrival of the Pioneers
caused quite a stir amongst the shoppers as they marched across the Tesco car
park.
Along with around thirty cadets, the Women’s Section Standard and the Quedgeley
Air Training Corps Standard the effect was quite emotional. The 2 minutes silence
was absolute, the first time in a long time. After leaving Tesco we all went to our HQ
in Green Lane, where we held a wreath laying ceremony at our Memorial Stone, followed
by a buffet and a social at the Club.
The Tuesday Club held their Christmas Party on the 27th November with 67 members
sitting down to Christmas Dinner and presents. Our next meeting will be in
January.
Our AGM was also held in November, the Committee remains the same as before
and have lots of ideas for the coming year. Don’t forget our Burns Night on 18th
January, it’s fast becoming a must attend event, only a few tickets are available,.
Please phone 729960 if you would like to attend.
A Happy New Year to all our readers, come and join us, all welcome.
Get Fit and Help the Community at Quedgeley Health
and Fitness Club
In 2005 Quedgeley Community Trust acquired Quedgeley Health and Fitness Club
(QHFC), which is based at Severn vale School in School Lane, Quedgeley. The
reason for the acquisition was to ensure that the school maintained the use of a
fully equipped gym with a range of cardiovascular machines along with fixed and
free weight equipment and that the facility remained available to the Community.
QHFC is the only Gym in Quedgeley which you can “Pay as You Go” or become a
member with No Joining Fee or minimum term membership, with many other facilities
expecting you to join for the minimum of a year. QHFC also has a fully sprung
dance studio, in which we offer the following classes with fully trained instructors in,
Circuit Training, Body Blast, Zumba, Pilates, Legs Bums and Tums, Step and Tone
and Aerobics. We also offer a Cardiac rehabilitation class. “New for 2013” we will be
offering “Bockwa” for the more adventurous! Our Classes and “Pay as You Go” are
all £3.50, less than a glass of wine! At weekends the sports hall is available for hire
for badminton, football, basketball, netball and cricket. Throughout the summer the
outdoor tennis courts can also be hired. We are also the venue for other activities
such as Tae Kwon-Do and Dance Classes. All Profits! Yes all Profits are invested
back into the facility or donated to good causes within Quedgeley. The Trust has recently
reinvested 15k back into the facility to ensure that QHFC members and users
and the pupils & staff of Severn vale, have the continued use of an up to date facility.
Therefore if your “New Year’s Resolution” is to get fit and loose those spare pounds,
give Ryan a call on 01452 720044 to arrange your free trial or induction. Getting
fit will not only help you lose those spare pounds, but at the same time you will be
pumping pounds back into worthwhile causes within the Community of Quedgeley.
Sinatra is back!
David’s career has
enjoyed many highlights
but his personal favourite
was a recording session
that took place at The
Abbey Road studios with
a 35 piece orchestra,
when David was asked to
recreate the original
Sinatra recording of ‘New
York, New York’ to
promote the new Atari
computer game ‘Tycoon
City – New York’ which
was released worldwide
in 2006.The Producers
claimed that they had
listened to every Sinatra
impersonator in the UK
and USA and that David’s
vocals were by far the
most accurate and natural.
Now that really is a
Happy New Year from
Field Court C of E Infant School
As we write, Christmas Plays are being rehearsed and the corridors are showing
the first layers of sparkly glitter as preparations are being made for Christmas. The
Christmas Fair started the celebrations where our Choir and Samba Clubs entertained
everyone and Father Christmas was extremely busy. Thank you to everyone
who came along and supported the event and especially to the members of the PTA
who organised it.
Magnet Man wasn’t such a Super Hero when he visited
YR. He had lost all his magnetic powers and came to ask
them for help. The children quickly got out some magnets
and searched their classrooms to find items that were magnetic
and non-magnetic. Besides having a great time, they
discovered that the magnets stuck to all the metal objects
which meant they are magnetic!
Y1 had a brilliant time at Gloucester Folk Museum. “We went into an old school room
and sat at the old wooden desks that had ink wells in them while Mrs Spencer taught
us some maths using an abacus!” “Our teachers also played some old playground
games with us such as ‘The Farmer’s in his Den’ and ‘Sticks & Hoops’. Most of the
old toys were made of wood and string which is very different to the ones we have
today. We really enjoyed our visit and thought it was very interesting” they reported.
Y2 made models of old houses to re-create the
Great Fire of London. They placed the houses
on the playground quite close together just like
the houses in London were built back in 1666.
A fire was started in the Bakery and they all
watched as the wind blew the flames. They
couldn’t believe how quickly the fire spread,
burning down all the houses!
In Y6 we have been researching The Blitz and imagining how it may have looked if
we had been there. We have made factfiles and also produced art work that used
our sketching and blending skills.
Year 4 have been completing a very interesting
homework project - we have been
researching one of our Victorian ancestors.
Children spent time talking to parents and
grandparents, looking at photographs and
looking at the 1881 census. We found out
that our ancestors’ occupations range from
farmers to silk weavers.
Here is a photograph of Nico Vernetti-Peters
with his family tree including photographs.
In Y3 we all enjoyed dressing up on our Roman day. Everyone was very impressed
with the effort the children and parents went to, to make their costumes look authentic.
We designed and made Roman shields in school and enjoyed marching
and practising the Tortoise formation on the playground. Roman soldiers invade
Kingsway!

In Y2 we have been continuing our work on Dungeons and Dragons and have made
links with our DT, ICT and Science work.
In ICT we used the internet to investigate the type of food that would have been eaten
during Medieval times. We found out some very interesting facts. For example:
they used to eat cats, dogs and rats and bakers would add sand to their bread to help
them save money! We decided to bake a more conventional dish from the Medieval
period and so worked in groups to bake Medieval gingerbread which consisted of
honey, breadcrumbs and several different spices. As you can imagine this was not a
popular food with the children and when they came to taste test it, they all agreed the
gingerbread we have today is much better. In Science we were lucky enough to find
3 large frozen dragon tears and used them to find out the quickest way to change the
material back to water. The children thoroughly enjoyed spending the day checking
each tear drop in the three different locations they had decided to place them, and
use their maths skills to measure the water that had melted.
Y1 have enjoyed learning about our local heroes. We have had visits from a local police
officer as well as members of the armed forces. We have been thinking of ways
to look after Kingsway and how we could save our world and have put them into our
very own non-fiction book.
This month the children in Reception have been learning all about traditional tales.
We have enjoyed making houses for the 3 little pigs using different materials and
papier-maché red riding hood baskets to help us act out the story. We also baked
some gingerbread men (fortunately these ones did not run away).
On behalf of all the staff, governors, pupils and parents of Kingsway Primary school.
We wish all readers a very Happy New Year
Quedgeley Show Needs You
For many people, the Quedgeley Show, which is held each July, is one of the highlights
of the year.
It’s a great chance for local people and groups to showcase their creative and horticultural
skills, for clubs and groups to promote themselves and for residents come
together to enjoy the marvellous entertainment on the stage.
The show is organised by volunteers from Quedgeley Community Trust and we are
looking for new blood to help us refresh it.
Maybe you could spare a few hours to help with administration, promotion, arranging
entertainment, coordinating the entries and so on.
If people don't come forward then the event may not be able to carry on.
Please contact Andy Jarrett on 07504 852044 or andy.jarrett@ymail if you can help.
A little of your time and skills would make such a difference to our community and
allow the show to be even bigger and better.
Local Agencies meet to discuss Youth projects
The group of churches, voluntary agencies, County Council, Q Club and
Quedgeley Community Trust met for the first time in November to discuss
how the youth provision on Kingsway can be enhanced.
No one is suggesting that Kingsway has a particular challenge with young
people but as the estate grows and community facilities are built we feel it is
fair to review the position.
Those attending agreed to carry on working together to better promote existing
facilities and opportunities for young people, through outreach street
work try to get the views of young people and to keep talking and sharing.
The group meets again on 10 Jan at 7pm at Q Club.
Please attend or contact Andy Jarrett at andy.jarrett@ymail.com or 07969
725411 if you would like to be involved.
We are particularly keen to involve clubs offering sporting opportunities with
Hardwicke Cricket Club – Players & Sponsors welcome for 2013!
Hardwicke Cricket Club would welcome new players for 2013 and after the wettest
summer on record last year, would also welcome any sponsorship. It is a local community
club that promotes sporting values in many Hardwicke & Quedgeley kids, with
an emphasis on enjoying games of cricket. At adult level the club really does need
new players - it runs 2 senior teams and competes in the Stroud League, where the
club visits many picturesque Cotswold venues.
At what was the largest ever turnout for their annual general meeting, the club elected
its new officers for the coming season.
Mark Medland, who was re-elected as chairman, outlined the progress that had been
made in the club over the last 12 months, stated that the pitch was now in the best
shape it had been for many years, all thanks to the outstanding contribution made by
Ian Soule as groundsman. A new addition had been made to our coaching team as
Ed Martin achieved his ECB Level 1 qualification, Ed has been great support to the
coaching at under 11 Level.
The club has acquired two sight screens which will be delivered in the New Year as
part of the continued improvements at the club. The chairman thanked all the committee
and the parents for the support they had provided.
Finances have been challenging particularly after a summer where the weather was
so poor, but David Evans did an outstanding job as Treasurer to ensure even in the
toughest times we remained solvent.
The under 11s, under 13s and under 15s all did well within their leagues, despite the
weather again playing a large part in their fixtures. The under 13s were Stroud Cup
winners for the second time, congratulations Andy Babbage on this success, the
under 11s finished 3rd in their league, while the under 15s were unbeaten and would
have won their league had one more game been played. The club continues to be
represented at District and County cricket performance trials.
Many of the youth cricketers that had played since under 11 level were now playing
regular first and second team cricket and contributed with some great performances.
Both senior sides found the going a little challenging in their divisions and as a result
of availability issues and injury, were rarely able to field their strongest teams.
Nets will begin again in the early Spring, the dates and venue will be advertised
shortly. We welcome new players regardless of age and ability, with age group cricket
starting at under 9’s with a soft ball (kwik cricket), under 11s, under 13’s under 15s
and senior cricket. For further details please contact Neil Martin on 01452 883287.
A PLACE TO GO - A PLACE TO OWN
Dear Parishioners and Friends
May I along with the congregation of Saint James wish you a very Happy and Blessed
New Year.
We do not know what this New Year will bring for our world, our country or for ourselves.
Each day is a new day of joy or sorrow, of the expected and the unexpected.
One day at a time my dear grandmother used to say.
We often say, or hear that times are hard and difficult, that we live in an uncaring
society and that people are not the same as in days gone by (...the good old days).
Things may have been a little different in the past I grant you, summer was summer
for one!), but those days were not without there own difficulties and hardships.
My grandmother had ten children, four she outlived, and an invalid husband for
most of her time in an age where there was no practical or financial assistance.
Yet for all this she counted her blessings and prayed to her God. She was never
a great Church-goer there was little time for that, but she did have A place to go, a
place of prayer. She was often the last person to go “up the wooden hills” she would
climb tired and often exhausted into her bed, lie down and then she would begin her
prayers. On my visits I would often hear her through the bedroom wall praying for at
least half an hour before she slept. Praying for all, and for everything. That was her
prayer place, her time with God, her time to un-load.
We all need at times a quite place to go, perhaps to pray or perhaps just to be alone
with our thoughts. Your Parish Church of Saint James (behind Tesco) is open every
day for you, and for that purpose. It is a Holy place, a still place, an Ancient place
where prayer has been offered since at least 1250. A place to go.
Whatever 2013 brings to any of us, the walls of our Parish Church building have witnessed
much over the years and in successive generations. You may not walk away
with your problems solved, but you will find there silence and tranquillity, and leave
with a sense of peace and comfort.
I feel sure that for yourself, as for many others, you will find warmth in the presence
of God, and a place to own, a place to take that one day at a time.
Walk well and with every Blessing
Fr John.
Happy New Year to everyone!
I was fortunate over the Christmas period
to be invited to see the Q Club’s production
of Dick Whittington. It was fantastic to
see so many families there and encouraging
to see that the centre is being so heavily
utilised by the community. Louise and
Dan do a sterling job. There are around
100 young people from the area that visit
the centre on a weekly basis; they have
around 800 on their books.
The added value is that they now employ a full time chef who caters for lunches and
refreshments. I can only speak as I find, but judging from the number of mince pies
and cup cakes that were produced and the empty plates left at the end of the Dick
Whittington performance, he must be pretty good!
Many of you may have seen from reports in the local newspaper that I have allocated
the £10,000 (given to each County Councillor in their patch) on various
schemes in the area. We hope to enhance safety measures outside Severn Vale
School, refresh the safety signs outside Beech Green and allow access for those
with disabilities along the newly resurfaced footpath by the Rectory. I would like to
thank Cllr. Graham Smith from the Parish Council who has supported me on these
projects. I hope the schemes will be up and running as soon as possible this year.
Professional, Friendly Service – NO JOB TOO SMALL!
QUEDGELEY W.I. – NOVEMBER 2012
November means the AGM when we hear from the Secretary about all the things
we have done throughout the year. With talks that included ‘A Honeymoon Suitcase’.
‘The History of Allotments’, ‘Life in the 1950s’ and the origins of many of our
childhood games. With our success at the Quedgeley Village Show and a very successful
fashion Show, we realised that we had enjoyed another full and interesting
year. We have been on various visits, both local and further away as well as walks
in the area and there is still a shopping trip to Oxford and our Christmas meal to
look forward to.
After we were introduced to our new committee most of us had some exercise when
Mark Collins told us about Tai Chi. We joined in with some of the moves and rather
than the gentle exercise we have seen, it was surprisingly energetic at times. Next
year’s programme may not be quite so energetic as we heard that we can look forward
to talks that include the Woodland Trust and sausage making! The December
meeting will be Diana Gaskins with her talk on “Healthy Eating for Christmas”.
Quedgeley WI meets at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of every month at
Quedgeley Village Hall and always welcomes visitors and new members. For further
information please contact our President Patricia Watts on Gloucester 502252.
“Quedgeley Baptist Church – www.quedgeleybaptist.org
A new church for Kingsway and a new name for QBC!
Last month we announced that QBC is sponsoring a new
church for Kingsway called: Grace Church, Kingsway
(GCK). We recognise that the people of Kingsway are most
likely to want to worship in their own local community rather
than make the short but inconvenient journey to the Village
Hall where we currently worship. If you live on Kingsway
you will be receiving more information through the letter box
soon!
As an expression of our partnership with GCK we will be changing our name from
Quedgeley Baptist Church to – Grace Church, Quedgeley – but we will continue to
meet as a church at the Village Hall. So the bright yellow banner that we put up each
Sunday morning outside the Village Hall is due to change!
Why ‘Grace Church’?
The word ‘Grace’, means – undeserved favour from God given to unworthy people.
It is, perhaps, the best way of summing up why a church exists in one small word:
• God, because of His goodness, sent his perfect Son, Jesus Christ, to die on
a cross in the place of sinners (who justly deserve His punishment). Through faith
in Jesus, God gives us what we don’t deserve – forgiveness and a right relationship
with himself.
• These same ‘forgiven sinners’ who have freely received
God’s ‘grace’ are then commissioned by God to
tell others about his amazing grace through Jesus. We
become a church that extends the offer of God’s rich
grace to all. We do that by our words - telling people
about Jesus; and we seek to show it by our actions –
seeking to do good to all – so that all may know how
good God is.
Land for a place of worship on Kingsway – please sign our on-line petition.
We are seeking to purchase land that has been set aside for a place of worship on
Kingsway. However, because of an ambiguity in the undertaking made between the
Kingsway developers (QUVL) and the local authority (Gloucester City Council) no
agreement can be reached as to the ‘correct’ value of the land. Kingsway will almost
certainly suffer the loss of what has been promised them if these two parties (QUVL
+ GCC) do not get together and sort this matter out soon. We believe that the people
of Kingsway now need to know about this matter in order that they may be given
opportunity to express to both parties (QUVL + GCC) that they care about it. Please
visit: www.quedgelybaptist.org/petition. Thank you.
QACA News
Last year the City Council organised a working party to clear the footpath adjacent to
the stream which runs from The Moat to Lilac Way.
This is a recognised footpath, shown on Parish records. The City Council even covered
the footpath with bark chippings.
There used to be a footbridge over the stream to allow people using the footpath to
safely cross the stream. However that was taken away by Gloucester City Council
after complaints from Beech Green Primary School.
Recently we had 11mm of rain, and the level of the stream rose to 94cm. (see photographs
showing where path crosses)
We are deeply concerned that the City Council have removed the original bridge,
restored the footpath and leave the public 94cm of fast flowing water to cross to
reach the other side.
It is a sad prospect, but if this was Podsmead the problem would be rectified as soon
as reported. But this is Quedgeley and has been ongoing for over 12 years.
The City Council have created this problem. It is now time for them to resolve it.
Beech Green’s Got Talent 2012
What fun we had last Friday when children from throughout the school
entertained us all in this year’s final of our very own ‘Beech Green’s Got
Talent’ show.
There was some fantastic singing, dancing, comedy, flute playing and
even dancing legs whilst doing a headstand! It was all there! All the
competitors showed enormous courage and confidence… it was going
to be hard a decision for the judges! Bethany Walker was commended
for her beautiful singing and then one act ‘blew the house away’ with his rap parody
of life in school ‘Beech Green Style’. ‘Alex’ was the name of the act and everyone
agreed Alex Price in Y4 was the worthy winner. Well done to all!
With regard to Mr Pontings question about lack of letters to the editor, whilst with any
change over of editors there will always be different ways of working.
But I must admit it does seem as if the Quedgeley News is losing its personnal imput
from the community . Yes! We still get the usual subject content such as established
groups within the community, but personal letters do seem to be missing, lacking the
local input from local people.
So lets have community issues along with local experiences and make it more interesting
to read.
HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM QUEDGELEY PARISH COUNCIL!!
Staff Changes: This year marks some changes within the Parish Council, starting
with departure of our current Parish Clerk, Peter Richardson. Peter has decided to
retire and spend some well deserved time with his Wife and family and we wish him
all the best and thank him for his devoted service. Our new Parish Clerk is Jacquie
Webster who took over the role on 1st January 2013. Jacquie is 45, married with 3
children and has 26 years of public service experience behind her.
Tesco Roundabout: Gloucester City Council have confirmed that this has now been
adopted and Glos County Council will be tidying this roundabout shortly. Landscaping
work will commence in the New Year, probably Spring as it will involve turf and
traffic control measures and weather conditions need to improve as well as longer
daylight hours. Some work is being arranged on the tow path and we will keep you
in touch with this as and when we know more.
1st Kingsway Brownies Update
Brownie meetings in the last months of the year are normally full of craft activities
and the last term was no exception. One week the girls made dolly mixture beads
which although quite tricky to make, looked very realistic once they had been fired
and then threaded to become pretty bracelets. Another week they painted Christmas
tree decorations, which again had to go away for firing, before returning looking
very bright and shiny and ready to adorn the family trees.
Brownies traditionally work for badges and our pack are equally keen to do so. Whilst
some badges are achieved outside the pack, for example, swimmer or musician, we
also held a badge evening in which the girls brought items in to complete during the
meeting and be tested by the guiders, with artist and craft being popular badges. In
addition a number of the brownies are keen to achieve their cooks badge and on
several occasions have brought in cakes for their six to share as part of that badge.
News from Severn Vale School
A New Year is always a time for optimism and certainly here at Severn Vale School there is
plenty to feel positive about. Our current Year 11 students are to be commended for the
attitude they are showing towards their work and all the signs are that they should perform
extremely well in their GCSEs in the summer. Good qualifications represent enhanced life
chances and already many of the students have finalised their plans for Post 16, recognising
that they need Plans A, B and C depending on how well they do. They are helped in this by
effective Careers advice and we are grateful to the many employers who come in and run mock
interviews with the students. The vast majority of Year 11 progress to further education but
knowing how to present yourself confidently at interview will be a skill they need to develop
even before they leave school.
Other year groups are also working well and one of the most precious moments of each week
comes when governors hold their Praise Panel, meeting students who are performing
particularly well and working hard. Catching students being good really helps motivation and it
is pleasing to see effort being rewarded.
Outstanding schools, and we aspire to be one, recognise that there is more to life than just
exams. That’s why it’s so rewarding to see students doing so much and so well outside the
classroom. Students are encouraged to capture these experiences in their Didbook, an eportfolio
which builds up over time. A quick look at some shows students taking part in more
and more after school clubs, taking part in sport, joining cadet organisations. Only recently I
saw a wonderful performance by some of our students at the Everyman Theatre as part of the
Schools’ Shakespeare Festival.
Add to all this our work with our partner primary schools, the Quedgeley Learning Community,
and our plans for an Arts Festival which encompasses our local community and you can see
why 2013 promises to be an outstanding year.
