N.A.S.C Presentations - Swimming in 

Silverware 

Newton Abbot Swimming Club held its annual presentation ceremony 

at Newton Abbot Racecourse amid proud parents and fellow 

competitors alike. 

The night proved that ‘all that glitters isn’t just gold’ as 

first time silver and bronze medal winners alike all beamed with 

delight together with their trophy winning colleagues. This was 

the reward for their hard efforts during home galas held late 

last year.

The evening had opened with awards for the 9 and under age group 

with the trophies and medals being presented by our special 

guest - Mrs Jeanette Stoneman (President Devon County ASA) and 

culminated with the night’s top awards. 

They were Female Swimmer of the Year - NICOLE WICKENS and Male 

Swimmer of the Year - RICHARD GLANVILLE. 

Ian Lyons, Head Coach rewarded SAMMY BASHAM for being the Most 

Committed Trainer and the Head Coach’s Club Swimmer of the Year 

went to RYAN ROGERS.

Newton Abbot’s successful Water Polo teams also received awards: 

The U15’s for winning the regional Chris Waller tournament and 

silver medals for finishing Runners Up in the Devon League, with 

the ladies team going one better winning the Devon League Trophy. 

The Coach’s player of the year was presented to JON TRIST. 

The night ended with an obligatory disco where the youngsters 

danced to the latest beats, who then hid in the corner with 

embarrassment as the parents moved in to cramp their style - 

Earlier key local shops in Newton had donated some quality draw 

prizes which helped the club make a handsome profit on the night 

which will contribute towards the cost of the trophies. Many thanks 

to Tony Pryce, Sainsburys, Panasonic, Ten Tors, Floral Passion 

Florist, Pizza Café, Martin Regan Hair Salon, Choice Words, Marks 

and Spencer, Somerfield, Argos and Asda. 

Also, a huge thank you to everyone who worked so hard behind the 

scenes to make the event so successful – You know who you are!

LEARN TO SWIM 

Badges and certificates are available from Rachael Tozer at 

the swim shop at the cost of £2, on production of the slip 

given by your teacher confirming the Level you have passed.

WATERPOLO NEWS: CONGRATULATIONS TO: 

• Our U15 side which competed in and won the Chris Waller Trophy 

tournament at Exeter in December. The team was Ben Gauntlett, 

Laura Shears, Laura Beth Morrison, Paris James, Ryan Rogers, 

Sam Webber(from Christchurch, Thomas Wadeley-Jones and Tom 

Whiting. 

• NASC Ladies who beat Newquay in the Devon knock out final, 

played at Exeter on Sunday 1 st February. The Ladies won 7-2, 

Laura Shears and Katie Trist each scoring two goals and Faye 

Drinkwater, Sue Webb and Jess Shears scoring one each. 

• The following players who have been selected following County 

Team trials: Laura Shears, Ryan Rogers, Thomas Wadeley- Jones, 

Tom Whiting, Alex Morrison, Ed Glanville, Jack Beer, Jon Trist 

and Richard Glanville. 

Ladies trial will take place later in the year. 

Following the recent success of the water polo and synchro 

‘taster sessions’ we are very close to getting some water polo 

pool time at Newton Abbot Leisure Centre on a Saturday 

afternoon. Once we have the Saturday dates we will hold 

another taster session, the week before. We are looking to 

offer those interested, water polo coaching with the aim of 

joining our successful teams. If you want further information 

please speak to Phil Shears or Phil Whiting. 

THE CLUB STILL NEEDS A TROPHY STEWARD.

Silver and Bronze for Ryan in Level 2 Long 

Course Meet 

Eight swimmers from N.A.S.C. travelled to Millfield School to 

compete in the Exeter City Swimming Club Level 2 Long Course 

Open Meet. This is a high standard meet, which is aimed at 

regional qualifiers and those close to regional times. 

For three of our swimmers, Rosie Allen, Emma Collyer and Niall 

Grant, it was their first time in a 50metre pool and so 

provided valuable long course experience. 

Ryan Rogers was the top performer, gaining a silver medal in 

the 50m butterfly and a bronze medal in the 50m backstroke, he 

also came 4th in the 100m freestyle. Nicole Wickens came close 

to winning a couple of medals, coming 4 th in both the 100m 

butterfly and 50m freestyle. Charlotte Wright and Emma Silk 

both had good swims in the 200m backstroke, each achieving a 

personal best long course time, and Sammy Basham also competed.

For those of you who like to keep newspaper clippings of the 

club or your children. 

I'm sure that you know this already - but using the following

for daily updates, which in effect gives you an electronic 

version of Herald Express. Use the Sport Tab to check the 

papers to see if a swimming report is in or not. You can then 

print it off or go and buy the paper.
