MANAGER’S NOTES
The challenge is on. We are into
the final third of the season and
the tough tests keep coming.
There’s been a lot of talk this week
after we suffered a second consecutive
defeat but there’ll be no panic from inside
Shirecliffe and this week, with no midweek
fixture, we’ve had a great opportunity to
focus on recovering, training hard and
looking towards today’s game.
This week it has been easy to forget
our league position and points tally.
I’m confident that 22 other teams in
this division would swap with us and
those clubs are very aware of what
we’re capable of.
It is important to focus and be driven,
as a club, we cannot be side-tracked by
anything else, we will continue to just
concentrate on the next game and the
next opportunity to win. We want to be
better than the opposition in every area.
We appreciate it did not go to plan against
Middlesbrough or Millwall, but we have all
learned from those experiences.
In the Boro game, we weren’t at our best,
but in terms of what we normally produce at
the top end of the pitch regarding chances
we were way above average for the
season. For example, our average amount
of shots in the opposition box is 10 with
four on target. We had 14 with 10 on target.
The opposition matched their average but
arguably they were assisted with a tackle
and a decision in the middle of the park
when we were overloaded. Simply, we
didn’t take our chances at one end and
were punished at the other.
And then in London last week, we were
off the pace in the first half, they started
better, and we looked like a team who had
played less than three days earlier and had
a big trip. We had to make changes second
half and what hurts me most is that having
wrestled the momentum away from Millwall
and showed tremendous character, we
switched off at key moments and conceded
two very uncharacteristic goals which cost
us the game.
I have to acknowledge my sending off
through these notes – I lost my temper and
deservedly was shown a red card.
I’ll take the punishment, but the reasons
behind it are a separate issue, which
will continue. That’s not an excuse for
what I did, but I need to keep having
conversations with match officials and the
administrators. I feel my argument from this,
and other incidents remain – it happened
again at Millwall at the weekend.
We have quality ball carriers who
are getting targeted and punished for
trying to continue their runs rather than
hitting the deck. Opposition players, in
general, go down with contact and our
players get booked.
My frustration is the direction the game
is going, we’re allowing it to happen, we’re
rewarding the dark arts of diving, timewasting,
feigning injuries all the time, it
seems. The conversations with the powers
that be is that we are encouraged to stay
on our feet and cut out the cynical aspects
of the game but it continues to happen. As
it stands, in our game of football, it is the
behaviours that everyone agrees we don’t
want to see that are being rewarded and
surely that cannot be right.
This is my platform to give my thoughts
and my opinion is that for the good of the
game in general, this has to be addressed.
JOHN CHASING MORE MILESTONES
John Egan is
focused and
determined to
write the next chapter to
what he has described as
a ‘fantastic journey’ at
Bramall Lane, having made
his 200th appearance for
the Blades last month.
The Republic of
Ireland skipper has been
a constant in United’s
backline since his arrival
from Brentford in the
summer of 2018 and
his double century and
counting in red and white is
something he is immensely
honoured about.
Speaking recently, the
centre-half commented: “It
is a proud achievement to
wear the Sheffield United
jersey, so to do it 200
times is very special. It has
been a fantastic journey
so far and I have loved
every minute, here’s to
many more.
“I’ve developed a lot
on and off the pitch, I’ve
improved as a player, really
enjoyed my football and
thankfully we’ve had a lot
of good times too. It has
been a special time to be
at the club.
“The hunger is there,
the determination to be
successful again is there
and most importantly the
PLAYER FOCUS
group want to improve
every single day. It is a
great environment to work
in, a great club to play for
and the fans are special.”
During his time as a
Blade, United have won
automatic promotion
to the Premier League,
enjoyed a ninth-place
finish in the top-flight and
following relegation came
agoninsgly close to an
instant return last term.
But with United currently
sitting second in the
Championship standings,
John is focused only on the
future and not past glories,
insisting concentrating
on the next game is a
mindset that has served
▲ John Egan recently made his 200th appearance for United
Paul Heckingbottom, his
staff and players really well
this term.
John continued: “We’ve
had a lot of success in
previous seasons and
before my arrival it was a
club certainly on the up. If
you look around the place
it is a quality club on and
off the pitch, it is a club
moving forward for sure.
“We have to keep
looking ahead and
preparing for the next
game, the next opportunity
for a victory and we have
that next game mindset, we
give everything for the next
challenge in terms of our
focus and preparation and
that won’t change.”
UTB 07
OLLIE LOOKING TO ADD MORE GOALS
Ollie Norwood is
looking to add
more goals to his
game having come
agonisingly close in the
recent home success over
Swansea City and has
revealed he is relishing
the opportunity to work
closely alongside
assistant boss
Stuart McCall.
The experienced
midfielder, an ever present
in the Championship
for the Blades this term,
has found the back of
the net three times in all
competitions, but still
feels he can add more
end product to his game
and admits he is learning
from one of the best in
Paul Heckingbottom’s
number two.
Ollie also feels every
single individual is likely to
play some part between
now and the end of the
campaign, but insisted the
players won’t lose their
focus despite a couple of
recent losses.
He remarked: “Stu goes
on at me every day saying
I should score more goals
and he’s right I should. It is
something I’m working on
with him and we practice
free-kicks nearly every
day, I fancied scoring
PLAYER FOCUS
▲ Ollie Norwood is working hard to add more goals to his game
(against Swansea) but it
didn’t dip enough, but
thankfully Robbo did the
rest and he could have
had another from my cross
in the second half, that is
all work on the training
ground, it is about delivery
and timing.
With Watford in S2
today, Ollie has history
against the Hornets, and
will no doubt be hoping to
replicate his contribution
from Boxing Day in 2019,
where he netted from the
penalty spot in a Premier
League 1-1 draw.
With the Hornets also
in the promotion mix, a
tough game awaits, and
with Spurs in the FA Cup
on Wednesday night, Ollie
believes the whole squad
will be called upon to drive
United forward during a
busy run of games.
He explained: “We’re
going to need everyone
for the last 14 games of the
season, there is a lot of
football to be played. We
need everyone fighting
fit and ready to make an
impact when they are
called upon and for them
to make it difficult for
the manager to pick his
strongest team.
“You can never look
too far ahead, we’ve
been in this position
before and we won’t think
we’ve achieved anything
until it is confirmed. The
dressing room is strong on
personality, and nobody
has ever once got carried
away or lifted their feet
from the floor.”
WE’LL STICK TO OUR BELIEFS – JAYDEN
Jayden Bogle
believes United
must continue to
play with a real attacking
freedom in the coming
weeks despite suffering a
couple of setbacks this
month.
United have amassed 61
points from 32 games this
term and currently pose
the third best attack and
second-best defensive
records in the division, with
Jayden believing the only
way to bounce back from
recent disappointments
is by continuing with a
forward-thinking approach.
He commented: “We
have that freedom within
the team to go and create
chances and score goals
and we’ve won a lot of
games and had some good
results, so the message is
always to be brave, enjoy
the challenge and attack
the opposition.
“It is important we
continue to focus on us
and what we are good at,
we will always respect the
opposition and we have to
make sure we are better
defensively than we have
been of late because the
emphasis is on us attacking
and that positive approach
has brought us plenty of
reward.
PLAYER FOCUS
“We take each game
as it comes, we’ll always
respect the quality of the
opposition, but we’ve had a
good week of training and
the mood and belief is still
excellent.”
Looking ahead to today’s
encounter against Slaven
Bilić’s Hornets, Jayden
added: “The boys are all
on the same page, we
have got an opportunity
and we have to enjoy this
challenge and the position
we are in; it is about us
and what we do and that is
always the message.
“The vibe around the
dressing room during the
▲ Jayden Bogle wants to see United continue to play with freedom
week is amazing, but when
we are training there is
a real focus throughout
the group about what we
are working on, the same
applies before games too,
we know we are here to be
successful and we know
there is an expectation
on us to finish the job off,
everyone at the club wants
the same thing.
“The prize on offer is
massive, but we can’t look
too far ahead, the focus
has to be on the next
game, and then the next
after that – that will never
change. There’s a lot of
games still ahead.”
SITTING DOWN WITH
W E S Wes Foderingham
FODERINGHAM
Wes Foderingham
believes the experience
within the dressing room
could prove to be crucial to
United’s hopes of securing
automatic promotion this
season.
Speaking honestly and openly
ahead of welcoming promotion
chasing Watford to Bramall Lane
at the weekend, the 32-year-old
stopper has called for calm and
perspective despite a couple
of untimely defeats this month
which has seen the advantage
between themselves and
Middlesbrough reduced. Wes
though didn’t shy away from
accepting the importance of
returning to winning ways this
afternoon, whilst acknowledging
Slaven Bilic’s Hornets will prove
another tough nut to crack.
A blank midweek in the
schedule has been used
wisely revealed the Blades
number one, with boss Paul
Heckingbottom using the extra
time on the training ground to
iron out minor issues that have
hampered performances in
defeats to Middlesbrough and
Millwall, but Wes feels returning
to S2 today, followed by
Wednesday’s Emirates FA Cup
tie against Tottenham Hotspur,
will hopefully provide some
welcome home comforts.
Finally, and unsurprisingly,
Wes is delighted to have
proved his worth between
the sticks in South Yorkshire,
establishing himself as the club’s
first-choice goalkeeper under
Heckingbottom, but he's also
keen to praise and welcome
the support he receives from
those closest to him, namely
coach Matt Duke and Wales
international Adam Davies.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs WATFORD

UTB 13
UTB: The manager spoke of
his frustration following last
week’s loss at Millwall, that
must have been shared by
the players, having restored
parity twice?
WF: “It was a tough game, we
knew it’d be difficult, especially
coming off the back of the loss
to Middlesbrough. We needed to
start the game well and stand up
to their physicality and we didn’t
do that. Millwall have a style, they
execute it well and are extremely
good at playing to their strengths
and by conceding so early
really put us on the back foot.
It was hugely frustrating having
equalised twice and when Macca
scored, I thought we could go
on and nick it. Defensively they
were poor goals we conceded,
particularly second half. We’ve
been so good this season
and limiting opportunities and
defending our box, but we’ve
perhaps come away from that
recently which was evident in the
goals we conceded. They are a
good side who are up there in
the table, but we won there in the
cup and we knew the challenge
we’d have to overcome, so it was
a bitterly disappointing result.”
UTB: Speaking of Millwall’s
physicality, you experienced that
first hand inside the opening
minute but managed to play on?
WF: “It was funny really,
because we’d study how they
start games. We knew from the
kick-off they’d want to get it
straight in the box, I knew their
main threat in the box is winning
the aerial battle, so I tried to
come and be positive and got
clattered for my troubles. It wasn’t
an ideal start, but I managed to
shake off the bang to the knee.
At the time we were unsure if it
was bang or if I’d twisted it but
I wanted 10-15 minutes to shake it
off which thankfully I managed to
do as the half progressed.”
“WE’VE BEEN REALLY SOLID
AS A DEFENSIVE UNIT FOR THE
MAJORITY OF THIS SEASON
AND LAST TERM TOO AND
THAT HAS SEEN US WIN A
LOT OF GAMES AND KEEP A
GOOD NUMBER OF CLEAN
SHEETS IN THE PROCESS”
UTB: 18 clean sheets last term,
12 already this season, you must
be pleased with those stats but
keen to add to that tally knowing
this will be instrumental in the
team being successful?
WF: “The clean sheets is
something we take massive
pride in, I certainly do and always
have, that has made the Boro
and Millwall games even more
disappointing. We’ve been really
solid as a defensive unit for the
majority of this season and last
term too and that has seen us
win a lot of games and keep a
good number of clean sheets in
the process. Those numbers are
a great return, but we’re going to
need more in the coming weeks.
We defend from the front, the
players at the top end of the pitch
start the press off for us and that
makes the job easier for the boys
at the back.”
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs WATFORD

14 UTB
UTB: Would it be a fair
comment to say as a team we
are stronger when the game is
tighter, rather than more open as
it perhaps has been in the last
couple of matches?
WF: “We are at our best and
look at our best when we are
defensively solid first and the
quality shines through, that
has made us a good side and
recently the standards have
perhaps slipped, and we’ve
looked a bit more fragile. When
a game becomes stretched
we are usually good in those
scenarios too, there have been
instances when games have
become stretched earlier in the
season and defensively we’d
got it right, so we’ve managed
to see games out, but when we
do get it wrong defensively we
can look more exposed and
unfortunately that has been the
case of late and we’ve paid the
ultimate price when the game
has become basketball like. If
we can get back to being solid
at the back and control the
game in and out of possession
I’d always back us to score at the
other end.”
UTB: Is it important to stay
calm and focused in the current
situation, there has been a lot
of noise from outside the club
about automatic promotion, but
there are still 14 games to be
played?
WF: “We are very much where
we want to be, but the reality
is two games ago we were in
a much stronger position than
we are now. You can’t be naive
though and think the run-in is
going to be plain sailing, there
will always be twists and turns
in this division. This is probably
a period now where we really
have to knuckle down and grind
out some positive results and
I’ve got no doubts we’re more
than capable of doing that, we’ve
already shown our resilience
numerous times this season.”
UTB: Has a blank midweek
come at a good time this
week, giving the manager and
his staff the chances to work
more with the players on the
training ground?
WF: “Coming off the back of
two defeats in a week, it has
been ideal for us. The chance
to get on the training
pitch more, work on a
few things in greater
depth and have a
bit more rest has
certainly been good
for us and hopefully
that’ll reflect in our
performances
moving
forward. This
league can be
really frantic
at times and
momentum is
always key at
this stage of
the campaign,
so to take a
step back,
reassess
and refocus
will hopefully
work to our
advantage.”
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs WATFORD

UTB 15
the club by contributing to the
success we’ve had. The belief
came from myself, you can’t
expect anyone to believe in you
if you don’t have that belief in
your own ability, but you have to
understand the game, football
isn’t a straight road. After getting
into the side, subsequently
Hecky has shown great faith in
me and hopefully I’ve managed
to repay him.”
UTB: Let’s talk about your time
with the Blades, it is certainly
fair to say patience has been
the key to your prolonged run as
United’s number one?
WF: “The first season was
tough, only playing one cup
game early on and last season
I wasn’t a regular in the 18 either
under Slav, prior to Rammers
leaving. It was a difficult period
to remain focused and positive,
but it is a challenge I’ve faced
and overcome and thankfully I’ve
grasped my chance. There was
no doubt I would in my mind, and
I’d like to think I’ve done myself
justice and been an asset to
UTB: The goalkeeper’s union
is often talked about at every
club, how do the dynamics work
up at Shirecliffe?
WF: “It is a little bit different
I suppose, working away from
the main group for a good spell
of each session. You have a lot
more direct communication with
the coach you are working with,
obviously those working with the
manager are working in a bigger
group, but being a goalkeeper
can be a lonely old position
sometimes! It helps you have all
the other goalkeepers there with
you to bounce ideas off, pick
their brains perhaps and as a
unit we pull each other through
when necessary. We talk about
the union and doing everything
you can to push the one with the
gloves, but ultimately everyone
wants to play. There is also that
understanding amongst us that
when you aren’t in the team
you still have a contribution to
make. Davo is fantastic behind
the scenes and when he gets an
opportunity he performs really
well, sometimes it can be difficult
coming in the side, especially
between the sticks.”
16 UTB
UTB: How crucial could the
experience, particularly of
the Championship, be as we
approach the business end of
the season?
WF: “We’ve got so much
experience within the group
and that is certainly a strength,
a lot of the lads have been in
this exact situation before and
then gone on a played in the
Premier League, others have
been involved in promotion races
before and those experiences
could prove to be invaluable
between now and the end of the
“WE ALWAYS LOOK
FORWARD TO PLAYING
AT BRAMALL LANE, THE
ATMOSPHERE IS ALWAYS
FANTASTIC, AND I KNOW
THE SUPPORTERS WILL
BE DESPERATE TO SEE US
RETURN TO WINNING WAYS”
season. This isn’t a time to panic
or worry, it is a time to embrace
the challenge, handle the
pressure and expectation and
ensure we get ourselves over
the line. It is more about points
than performances and we’ve
proved already this season we
can win games when we aren’t
at our best. To the outside that
might paper over the cracks, but
it is the sign of a good team if
you can dig and scrap for three
points. We’ve had two poor
results and the important thing
now is making sure it doesn’t
extend further. We’ve got a
driven group, led by a driven
manager and I’m sure if there is
a group that can bounce back
from a couple of setbacks it is
this one.”
UTB: Off the back of a good
week’s training, how much are
you and the lads looking forward
to welcoming Watford to Bramall
Lane today, followed by what
promises to be a fascinating
FA Cup clash on Wednesday
evening?
WF: “We always look forward
to playing at Bramall Lane, the
atmosphere is always fantastic,
and I know the supporters will
be desperate to see us return to
winning ways at the weekend.
It will be another tough game,
they are all going to be, Watford
will be difficult opposition to
face, and they will be coming
here full of confidence having
beaten West Brom but that might
be a good thing if they come
and be open. They are chasing
promotion and will be looking
to build some momentum with
players returning from injury, but
we are under no illusions about
how much we need the points
and we will be going all out for
the victory. The only focus is
trying to beat Watford at the
weekend, but the Tottenham
game is another opportunity
for those selected to get some
minutes and do well against
Premier League opposition. It is
a distraction, but a chance if the
manager decides to rotate for
some lads perhaps, and hopefully
if we are promoted then it will be
the standard of opposition we
are facing every week.”
United put in a dominant
performance at Crewe Alexandra
to continue their good form
thanks to three quick second half goals
from Theo Williams, Andre Brooks and
Louie Marsh.
Marsh headed home the first as the
Blades started the second half on the front
foot before turning provider for Williams
four minutes later.
The three points were secured moments
later as Marsh notched his second assist,
with Brooks the beneficiary, who rounded
goalkeeper Booth before rolling the
ball home.
Another of United’s promising
youngsters recently completed a loan
move into the National League to further
his development.
Centre-half Finley Potter joined
promotion chasing Barnet earlier this
month and played 89 minutes on his debut
at Torquay United last Saturday.
Meanwhile, Frankie Maguire has
extended his stay at Kettering FC until the
end of the season having already become
a fans favourite at Latimer Park.
UNDER-18s UPDATE
United continued their good run
of form in the league with a
comprehensive win at Burnley.
The Blades, looking to close the gap on
leaders Barnsley, gave a debut to Jackson
Blaize in midfield and the teenager was
impressive throughout.
Despite running out worthy winners in
the end, it took some time for United to
find their rhythm, taking the lead with a
swift move that ended with Stafford Clarke
finding the corner from distance after
good hold up play from Kurtis Havenhand.
The second goal didn’t arrive until after
the interval when Johnny Oluleye burst
onto a long ball forward from Seth Okyere
before firing home. The Clarets were then
reduced to 10 men following an off the ball
incident, but managed to half the deficit
five minutes later.
The Blades kept their composure
though, with Havenhand adding a third,
before debutant Archie Christie-Crainie
scored the fourth just moments after
entering the field, tapping home from
close-range.
United Women recently enjoyed a
confidence boosting win after
defeating Charlton 1-0 at Bramall
Lane.
United showed great character to come
out on top in a keenly contested clash
which was settled by a Georgia Walters
strike just before the break.
The Blades could have had the lead
sooner with a Sophie Barker effort hitting
the bar, whilst a Charlton handball on the
line was missed by the officials.
Five minutes after the missed offence,
United struck the winning goal when
Barker played in Walters who finished
calmly into the bottom corner.
Alethea Paul and Walters went close
after the break, whilst United dealt
with everything thrown at them as Fran
Stenson recorded a clean sheet on her
home debut.
Meanwhile, new boss Jonathan Morgan
will take charge of his first game tomorrow
when United take on Crystal Palace.
UTB 31
Today’s game against Watford has been designated to Level Playing Field, who
explain the importance of the work undertaken by the charity…
We’d like to introduce ourselves. We are
Level Playing Field, the leading charity
in England and Wales campaigning
and advocating on behalf of disabled
sports fans.
Today, Sheffield United is using this
match day to participate in our new
national campaign, ‘Unite For Access’. A
celebration of disabled fans, accessibility,
and inclusion at sports venues.
Did you know that an estimated 22% of
the UK population are disabled?
That means it’s very likely that you know
someone who is disabled, or you might be
reading this as someone who is disabled
yourself.
Quick question – how did you get to
the game today? If you came by train, did
you know that 40% of railway stations
don’t have step-free access? Meaning that
if you’re a wheelchair user or ambulant
disabled, even getting to a match can
be a considerable barrier to attending
this game.
Talking of barriers, Level Playing Field
conducted a survey last year which
found that nearly 29% of disabled fans
considered the ‘attitudes of others’ to be a
barrier when attending live sports.
We appreciate that talking about
disability can be daunting sometimes,
it’s a complex subject matter. That’s why
we invite all supporters, disabled and
non-disabled, to engage with your club,
Disabled Supporters Association (DSA) if
it has one, and ourselves, because it’s not
just down to disabled people to highlight
the importance of access and inclusion at
your club. Good disability access benefits
everyone, so let’s…
John Garrett’s
FABLES & FOLKLORE
Blades historian JOHN GARRETT’S long-running inimitable
account of following the Blades always provides a talking point
as UTB again extends a platform for his popular article...
A night out in Wigan...
What could be more tempting a
few days before Christmas than a
night out in Wigan?
Not that there is anything particularly
wrong with Wigan, and let me make that
clear, but the Lancashire town and I have
met before - on many occasions.
In a previous life, I worked in finance
as a fully qualified advisor for a major
bank. Yes, I know it’s hard to believe
when I can barely switch a laptop on
without calling IT, but in those far off days
when you could still use a calculator
AND be allowed to count on your toes
as well, I was the merchant banker of
Handsworth.
They had this strange idea that, if they
sent you to Wigan on courses, you would
be so bored you would put extra effort to
pass your exams, so they didn’t have to
send you back again. Originally, they had
them in Manchester. I am told there are still
several missing from those days last seen
▲ Goal joy for John Egan as United beat Wigan in December
wearing flared Levis, hoodies and telling
people that all was ‘banging’.
They even decided to put candidates
up in a hotel on the outskirts in an area
called Standish, and this ploy very nearly
worked. However, had they done their
homework they would have found out that
every Thursday it was a huge night for the
▲ The sweets won in the DW suite
local student population in the disco (yes,
it had a disco underneath) and wait for this,
it was a quid a bottle. Please bear in mind
the tests for the qualification were the
following day, and you have an idea of the
carnage that generally ensued.
I attended several of these courses at
the venue and was astounded that they
hadn’t cottoned on to what was going on.
It was like something from the last days
of Rome. Respectable middle-aged men,
many of them looking like exactly what
you would imagine a financial advisor
back then to look like, dancing with their
ties around their heads to 808 State. It is
possibly not what the invigilators may have
had in mind to see as they handed the test
papers out the following morning at 9am
prompt.
The first one I attended saw Clive from
Wetwang appear out front from a taxi with
minutes to spare still in his evening attire
and looking very much the worse for wear.
He said that he had decided when they
threw him out of the club to go in search
of Wigan Pier and managed to ‘get lost’. It
would never have happened in Wetwang!
It would be fair to say that most of Wigan
went there to get trashed on a Thursday
night! All that time trying to find something
to do there and not get sucked into the
Thursday club made me decide that when
I had finished, save for going to the match,
I would probably give it a miss in future.
And so it came to pass, our head of
commercial invited me to travel with the
rest of the team to enjoy a bit of reciprocal
corporate entertainment with them and
see just what Wigan do on a match day.
In other words, join the prawn sandwich
brigade and sit in the warm whilst all
fellow Blades, including my son and his
stepmother, froze to death in the arctic
tundra known otherwise as the DW.
My colleague and longtime commercial
exec kindly offered to drive. Good lad.
Several problems with this though. Firstly,
Liam has a laid back and chilled out
persona where anything is concerned
that just makes me want to strangle him,
“RESPECTABLE MIDDLE-AGED
MEN, MANY OF THEM LOOKING
LIKE EXACTLY WHAT YOU WOULD
IMAGINE A FINANCIAL ADVISOR
BACK THEN TO LOOK LIKE,
DANCING WITH THEIR TIES AROUND
THEIR HEADS TO 808 STATE”
as much as I love him dearly, his clock
and any semblance of urgency that may
be required at any point is just not there.
I admit that it’s a generation thing. If I had
a night on the tiles and ventured home, for
instance, my mother would gently rouse
me from my blissful rest at around 7am by
hoovering the bedroom, explaining that it
“wasn’t my fault that I had come home at
6.55am” and that “if I could afford to spend
that much money, I could give her more
board”. It taught me many things, including
don’t bother going home, but also that
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs WATFORD

UTB 37
being on time for anything was important.
For instance, had I waited until she had got
the bus at 8am to go to work, I would not
have seen her and would not have had the
residual grief that said meetings tended
to throw up. As a result, I have always
been early, can’t abide lateness and would
sooner set off half hour in advance as
opposed to run a risk of being late. The
younger end just doesn’t grasp it at all.
As a result, if Liam is ever driving or
you have any arrangement with him, just
arrive later than he says, because it will
never happen at the time appointed. He
got engaged at Christmas and I bet the
ring still hasn’t arrived. On this day, he
shocked me by ringing to say we were
setting off half an hour earlier than had
been arranged. Incredible till it turned out
that he needed to drive all the way home
to pick up the coat he had forgotten in
the morning. Lending him one wouldn’t
do because he had left his wallet and all
the tickets for the game in the said coat.
I despaired.
Now, the time we set off was just
heading to rush hour and, after fighting
our way across town, half an hour later we
had the sodding coat. We had pleasantly
discussed this minor diversion and also
which would be the quickest way to
Wigan. Sadly, we then headed in the
opposite direction, over that trouble free
route known as the Snake Pass, much
to my chagrin on the matter. Apparently
then, when most of the roads to the Snake
were shut, that was somehow my fault,
especially as I had stopped us going over
Chapel-en-le-Frith. Nothing to do with
fetching the coat though, obviously.
UTB 39
In the end, we did make Wigan with
oodles of time to spare. The suite was
lovely, and the staff there are sound. Mal
Brannigan, our former CEO is there and
came to find us and make a fuss. Each
table had the usual - programmes, a gift
bag and the obligatory match day quiz.
Now, I always have a go on this, and the
joy that can be gained from it is limitless.
Imagine, a guest on the table from a rival
club having the chance to take part, win
and humiliate those around? I’ve done
it before and some by winning theirs at
Hillsborough before a derby by the way.
Only got two wrong out of a possible 30.
Nearest to me got 20! As I was invited up
to receive a magnum of champagne, I was
given the chance to say a few words. Oh,
I did. I took great pleasure in informing
every one of them that they had just lost in
their own suite by a fully-fledged, lifelong
Blade. How they all laughed! My host, a
former United director pointed out that
I may have needed an escort out of the
stadium had I carried on. They couldn’t hit
the back of the net that night let alone me!
Anyhow, back to the tale. As a table,
we did the same again and only got two
wrong. Quality, so a table of Blades knew
more about Wigan and its players than a
room full of Latics fans! The prize was a
huge jar of blue and white Wigan sweets.
Sadly, none of them were gobstoppers, so
it was fair game to wind a few of them up.
It was amazing how badly some of them
took it. Some really sour comments about
cheating and using Google. Honestly,
I have never been that desperate to win or
own anything in those colours in my life,
but along with the win the sours in there
tasted so much sweeter as we waved
a cheery goodbye to all at the end and
headed back to the car for a victorious
journey home! As we left, I saw our former
manager Adrian Heath. Bizarrely he
recognised me which is truly incredible
being as he didn’t have the longest of
spells here. Nice lad though. That as may
be, he didn’t get one of my victorious
winning sweets. No chance.
The journey back was made longer by
the slip road to the M6 being closed for
work. I mean, why would you ever take
into account thousands of footy fans
fighting their way back from a Monday
night kick off Christmas week? That would
be plain silly, wouldn’t it? Couldn’t blame
Liam for that one, so I just blamed him for
everything else!
Free sweets from Wigan and three
points. It was a Happy Christmas from
Lancashire indeed!
WHAT’S THE
STORY?
In every issue of UTB this season, our regular contributor
DAVE BURKINSHAW features a Blades related photograph
from his personal archive and reveals the story behind it…
United began the
1965-66 season in
the old First
Division with a young
squad and one that
included winger Gil Reece,
their first new signing
since the 1960-61 season.
This was also the first
season that teams could
use a substitute for injured
players. In the course of
the season midfielder Tony
Wagstaff made United
history by becoming the
club’s first substitute to
appear in a league game.
As in the previous three
seasons, the Blades
started the season well and
by early October were top
of the table.
There were a number
of impressive results in
the team’s strong start
to the season including
a 1-0 win at Liverpool, a
2-2 draw at Leeds United
and 1-0 home win against
local rivals Sheffield
Wednesday. However,
three consecutive defeats
between 23rd October
and 6th November halted
the team’s progress. The
last of those three defeats
had seen United feature
away at Arsenal on BBC
TV’s Match of the Day
programme. It wasn’t a
memorable appearance as
the Blades lost 6-2!
The week after that
humbling defeat to the
Gunners, Saturday 13th
November 1965, United
faced Everton at home.
Today’s action photograph
was taken during that
game. It shows United’s
local born defender Reg
Matthewson challenging
Everton goalkeeper Andy
Rankin for the ball.
In close attendance
trying to protect his
‘keeper is Everton’s Brian
Harris. Reg had a solid
career with the Blades
making 149 league
appearances before later
playing for Fulham and
Chester.
In the background to the
action stands the old John
Street Stand and terrace.
On the opposite side of
the ground to the John
Street Stand, Bramall Lane
was still a three-sided
structure as Yorkshire
County Cricket club used
the stadium in the summer.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs WATFORD

UTB 41
Considering the attractive
opposition, and United’s
still promising position in
the league table, the game
only attracted a crowd of
16,579. United struggled
to attract the type of gates
they hoped for with 14 out
of their 20 home games
attracting crowds of less
than 20,000.
The Blades won this
game 2-0 with striker Mick
Jones notching one in
each half to end United’s
poor run of results.
However, the win did not
spark another unbeaten
run as they only won one
of their next eight games
and ultimately ended the
season in a disappointing
ninth place after such a
promising start.
United did, however,
have the satisfaction of
completing the league
double over Everton
winning 3-1 at Goodison
Park on 9th April with
Jones again scoring a
double. He finished as
United’s leading scorer
with 21 league goals.
Everton did have the
satisfaction of winning the
FA Cup beating Sheffield
Wednesday 3-2 in the
final.
BLAST FROM THE PAST
Each week PAUL HOLLAND looks back on a prominent game
from the past between the Blades and our opponents…
WATFORD 0-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED
TUESDAY 28th NOVEMBER 2006
A fortnight after claiming a first
away victory of the season, the
Blades were victorious on the
road again, this time at Vicarage Road.
Another single strike was enough to
secure victory for Neil Warnock’s side,
after former Hornet Danny Webber netted
a controversial goal, heading home from
close-range in what appeared to be in an
offside position.
The former Manchester United and
Watford striker’s goal came on 88 minutes
after he headed in following a goalmouth
scramble. Watford then suffered further
misery when they were reduced to 10 men
after Chris Powell received his second
booking of the match.
Naturally, Warnock was delighted with
the result and his team’s performance,
stating: “It’s absolutely fantastic to come
away with three points. It was hard work,
but I thought we were magnificent.”
United could have won by a handsome
margin with second half strikes
from Christian Nade and Rob Hulse
both striking the woodwork before
Webber’s winner.
The hosts had chances of their own as
Tommy Smith’s effort flew narrowly wide
early on. Future Blade Darius Henderson’s
volley also drew a save from Paddy Kenny.
Chances also fell to United with Nade
handed a one-on-one opportunity, but
Watford stopper Richard Lee was able to
avert the danger. The Frenchman then
saw his header from a cross hit the upright
before he fired Keith Gillespie’s cross
over the bar.
Hulse’s effort then smashed against the
crossbar as chances continued to flow.
Late on, the hosts were denied a
penalty claim shortly after Powell’s
dismissal when referee Martin Atkinson
waved away appeals after Rob Kozluk
allegedly handballed in the area.
and held
on the sides
above, after a
4-1 win over
Blackpool at
Bramall Lane.
This was a significant game for John
Gannon who made his debut from the
bench and scored his first United goal.
United’s other scorers included Martin
Pike, Mark Todd and Peter Duffield.
Two sides who were in the
1995 Premier League the previous
season, with United sitting inside the
play-off places seeking an instant return
ahead of a trip to Boundary Park to face
Oldham. United were behind after five
minutes, with Paul Rogers levelling a
minute later. Nathan Blake made it 2-1
United but Oldham hit back with two
goals to lead. Late on Jostein Flo netted
an equaliser for United, the second time
he’d scored against the Latics during the
1994-95 season.
ON THIS DAY
UTB looks back into the archives to find out what
happened on this day in United’s history…
FEBRUARY
Another promotion chasing
1984 campaign, and another
significant win for United in this Division
Three encounter with Brentford. United
remained sixth after a Colin Morris
penalty, a Keith Edwards goal and a rare
strike for defender Bob Atkins, recently
back in the side, as United won 3-1.
United continued to climb away
2014 from the League One drop
WHO WOULD BE
A MANAGER?
Our regular contributor DAVE BURKINSHAW casts a glance over former
United players who have tried their hand at management...
Robert Page...
Robert Page was a central
defender who made his English
League debut with Watford in
October 1993. He went on to captain the
Hornets to two promotions to the
Premier League in 1997 and 1999. He
also won Watford’s Player of the Year
award in their 1999-2000 Premier
League campaign.
He left Watford in August 2001 to join
the Blades, initially on loan, but then on
a full transfer a month later. He settled at
Bramall Lane cementing a regular place
in the side. His ability to read a game well
and make few mistakes made him popular
with United’s fans winning the 2001-02
Player of the Year award.
He played an important role in the
‘Triple Assault’ season of 2002-03,
skippering the team to two semifinal
appearances in the cups and a
disappointing loss in the play-off final. In
all he made 107 league appearances for
United, scoring one goal before joining
Cardiff City in July 2004.
He soon moved to Coventry City for
more regular first team football and later
had spells with Huddersfield Town and
Chesterfield. Following his release by the
Spireites in March 2011 his professional
career was over after making 475
appearances in total for all his clubs.
In addition to his clubs, Robert also won
international honours with Wales at U18,
U21 and B levels as well as winning 41
full caps.
After his playing career was over, he
moved into coaching joining Port Vale in
July 2011 as a youth coach before being
promoted to first team coach a year later.
In 2014 he was promoted to assistantmanager.
He then took over as caretaker
manager a couple of months later when
Micky Adams resigned and after a good
run of results, he was appointed Vale’s
manager at the end of October 2014. He
remained in this role until the end of the
2015-16 season where his side played a
possession based game and succeeded
in retaining their League One position.
In May 2016 he accepted the manager’s
job at Northampton Town after Chris
Wilder had left the club to join the Blades.
However, after a poor run of results and
elimination from the FA Cup by nonleague
Stourbridge, he was sacked in
January 2017.
He soon had a new job as youth coach
at Nottingham Forest as well as being
appointed manager of the Wales U21
team and later assistant coach to Ryan
Giggs, the Welsh national team manager.
Robert became caretaker manager in
November 2020 following the Welsh FA’s
decision to grant Giggs extended leave
to deal with a legal case. In this new role
Robert led Wales in the delayed 2020
UEFA Euro Finals (actually played in the
▲ Rob in charge of Port Vale back in 2015
summer of 2021). They qualified from
their group but were eliminated in the
round of 16.
He then had the proud achievement
of leading Wales as they qualified for the
2022 World Cup Finals in Qatar following
their play-off win against Ukraine last
June. Robert was also confirmed as
Wales’ permanent manager later that
month and signed a new four-year deal in
September 2022. This was the first time
Wales had qualified for the World Cup
Finals since 1958. Although disappointed
to be knocked out at the Group Stage,
Robert can be proud of his international
record to date and look forward to an
optimistic future.
NEW
BALL
GAME
In this edition, United are on midweek Premier
League duty once again as the Blades welcome
title challengers Norwich City to Bramall Lane for
this game on Wednesday 10th March 1993.
The weekend before United had played out a 0-0
draw against Blackburn in the FA Cup quarter-final, with
the replay at Bramall Lane set for the following week.
Following the 6-0 pummelling of Spurs, United had
climbed out of the relegation zone, holding a slender
one-point advantage over the bottom three. Norwich’s title bid
had faltered in recent weeks, and coming into this game they
were seven points behind leaders Manchester United.
A close game was won by Norwich, thanks to a 55th minute Ruel Fox goal.
DAVE BASSETT…
Again, Dave Bassett was quick to make the point that the Premier League remained
the main priority after United earned an FA Cup quarter-final replay at Blackburn.
The manager also commented on losing star man Brian Deane through suspension,
with Bassett explaining his disappointment with the treatment his striker receives
from opponents. Bassett also thanked the departing Mike Lake who reconsidered an
offer from Wrexham following a loan spell earlier in the season.
FACE TO FACE…
MITCH WARD
UTB poses the same questions
from 1992-93 to the same players
to see if they remember what they
said 30 years ago, and to see what
their 2022-23 answers are…
— Who was your favourite player?
— Not Sheff Utd related? Glenn
Hoddle? I got one right, maybe my
memory isn’t as bad as I thought!
— What are your hobbies
outside football?
— No question, I’d have said golf?
Yes, something else? Fishing? No,
I don’t know then. I wouldn’t have got
the other two!
— Who has been the biggest
influence on your career?
— Dad and Keith Mincher? Two out
of three, I should have remembered
saying my mum, that’s poor!
— Which current player do you
most admire?
— I reckon back then I’d have said
Peter Beagrie? Yes, struggling with
the other. Maybe Gordon Cowans?
I said Ray Wilkins? Well, fair enough,
he was a top player.
— What has been the lowest point
of your career?
— A nearby Carl Bradshaw
comments: “Meeting Carl
Bradshaw!” Mitch: “No, that’s what
ruined my career!”
— Have you any soccer
superstitions?
— No. I did? I can’t remember any?
Okay, I did that with the socks,
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs WATFORD
Revisited
was it a superstition? That’s just
sensible, isn’t it?
— What car do you drive?
— Back then, was it a Ford? No…
Astra? Why did I say 5 Speed! Think
that was my first car, £600 I paid.
I was only on £2 a week back then!
— What are your most
endearing qualities?
— I can’t remember. I said generous?
Well, that’s still true, so I won’t argue!
Carl Bradshaw: “You have never
been generous then or now!”
— Who is your room-mate
on away trips?
— Bradshaw and Whitehouse. I used
to rotate. Dane was sound, Bradshaw
was shocking!

WHAT HAPPENED
ELSEWHERE
THE STATE OF PLAY…
Going into this round of fixtures,
United’s opponents Norwich had
a seven-point deficit to leaders
Manchester United who were
just a point clear of Aston Villa.
All three had now played the
same number of games. At the
bottom, Oldham had a six-point
gap to make up to the safety
line, sitting bottom of the pile.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs WATFORD
1992-93
During this particular week back in 1992-93,
how did the rest of the Premier League get on?
We look back on what happened elsewhere…
— WEDNESDAY 10th MARCH 1993 —
▼ Ron Atkinson’s Aston
Villa continued to keep
the pace at the top
With so many clubs clustered
together, the relegation fight
looked intriguing with the mighty
Liverpool placed 16th just three
points ahead of Middlesbrough
occupying the final relegation
place.
THE GAMES…
Middlesbrough’s tenure in the
Premier League was starting
to look fragile after yet another
defeat. Goals from John Scales
and Dean Holdsworth helped
Wimbledon move further clear of
the drop zone and plunged Boro
further into the mire. Liverpool
gave themselves some much
needed breathing space when
Ian Rush netted in 1-0 win over
high-flying QPR. Elsewhere,
Aston Villa were held to a
goalless draw by Spurs, whilst
Sheffield Wednesday stayed
fourth after a 1-0 win at Ipswich
thanks to a David Hirst strike.
HEADLINE ACT…
The race for survival and the run
for the title took an incredible
twist at Boundary Park. Oldham
in 22nd position defeated leaders

with 14 Premier League goals.
Progress continues for LGBTQ+
professional footballers as Czech
Republic international midfielder,
friends. I have a job that I have been doing
as best as I can for years with seriousness,
with professionalism and passion.” He
added: “Like everybody else, I also want
to live my life in freedom without fears,
without prejudice, without violence but
with love. I am homosexual, and I no
longer want to hide myself.”
Jakub, Inspirující
Last year, Blackpool’s Jake Daniels
UK men’s game for more than 30 years to
come out while still playing.
With several male professional players
now having come out over the past two
in the game is entering a new era of
understanding.
LGBT+ FRIENDLY
SESSIONS BOOST
PARTICIPANTS
CONFIDENCE
As part of the Foundation’s commitment
to help Sheffield become a more healthy,
empowered and inclusive community,
we’ve been able to expand our delivery
in recent years to run LGBT+ inclusive
sessions at Ponds Forge.
Ellie Wilson, our empower LGBT+
lead, said: “Within the project we aim to
empower young people in the LGBTQ+
community and provide them with sessions
to boost their confidence. It provides
the participants with a safe space to do
activities, meet people, make new friends
and it really helps their mental health. It
produces an environment where they
can be comfortable and be themselves
because if they were to participate in
another session outside of here, they may
not feel they could do that. It provides
opportunities which is really important.”
Ellie explains how the sessions have
helped Rowan, a participant turned coach:
“It’s been great to see how Rowan has
gone from participating to volunteering to
now delivering the trampolining sessions
at Ponds Forge. They’ve built their
confidence, made new friends, brought
people in from the LGBT+ community and
the sessions are going from strength to
strength under them.”
Watford’s ambitions were
clear at the start of this
Championship season, and
they are still in sight for Hornets
boss Slaven Bilic and his players as
they arrive at Bramall Lane today.
After losing their Premier League
status last season, a return to the
top flight is the target for Watford in
the final third of the campaign, and
they’ll be eager to secure a sixth
Championship away win against
the Blades to confirm they can
overcome their promotion rivals.
Their recent display against
leaders Burnley underlined they
have the capability to run any side
in this competitive division close,
as the Hornets look to convert a
recent run of draws into wins.
STAR MAN
Every promotion-winning
side needs a match-winner
who is capable of turning a
game with a moment of magic and
Watford will look to Joao Pedro to
give them the boost they need in the
final weeks of the season.
This talented forward has scored
some valuable goals during his time
in a Watford shirt after he first came
to prominence against Manchester
United in the Premier League last
season.
Pedro has built on his breakthrough
as a first team star at Watford with a
solid campaign in front of goal in the
Championship, with his strike against
Burnley earlier this month securing a
point against the title leaders.
Even though he is only 21, Bilic has
given Pedro the captain’s armband to
lead his team and he is convinced he
has the maturity to fill the role.
“When he’s on the pitch it’s
totally different and he has a big
impact on all the other players
around him,” says Bilic
of Pedro.
“I watched Joao a
lot since he came
to England, and he
always looked like a
talented player.
club, I can see he is a top
THE LOWDOWN...
...on Watford
Each week UTB takes an alternative look over our opponents...
THE EARLY YEARS…
The origins of the club
can be traced back to
1881 when Watford Rovers
were formed by Henry
Grover. Rovers originally
composed entirely of
amateur players. The
team first competed in
the FA Cup in the 1886-
Watford won the County
Cup for the first time.
LEGENDARY LUTHER…
between 1976 and 1992,
and his 415 league
appearance during the
same period is also a
club record.
SIR ELTON AND FRIENDS…
When you think of wellknown
Watford fans, it
is likely that your mind is
to immediately go to Sir
Elton John. The world
renowned and multiaward-winning
singer is, of
course, a previous owner
and chairman of the club,
having overseen their rise
THE EX-FILES
David McGoldrick
EACH WEEK UTB CATCHES UP WITH THE PROGRESS OF SOME OF THE NAMES WHO ONCE
GRACED BRAMALL LANE, BUT ARE NOW CONTINUING THEIR CAREER ELSEWHERE…
David McGoldrick is off the mark
for his new club Derby County
after scoring a dramatic stoppage
time winner recently against
Peterborough United.
Trailing 1-0 and down to 10 men,
things looked bleak for the Rams
until an equaliser from Jason
Knight on 88 minutes was followed
up by McGoldrick’s winner from
12 yards.
After missing the first four games
of the campaign through injury,
McGoldrick is now finding his
feet at Pride Park after his highly
successful stint at Bramall Lane
came to an end at the conclusion
of last season.
“As a striker you enjoy your
goals, and especially when
they come as a winner as well,”
McGoldrick said of his first strike.
“We hadn’t scored for a few
games, so to get two right at the
end was nice. It was a pleasing day
all around and it’s always special
to turn it around late on.
“We are all together as one in
the dressing room and it helps with
the team bonding too, celebrating
together at the end, especially
as quite a few of us have come
through the door this summer.
The changing room was very
happy after.”
Grateful to be back fit again after
recovering from the injury which
curtailed his final season in S2, the
ex-Forest front man is now focused
on a strong run in the side.
He added: “I feel I am getting
fitter. I came here after a four or
five-month spell out, following an
operation. I’ve been building my
fitness up and I had a setback by
doing too much too soon, but now
I am building things up slowly.”
FAVOURITES
with Chris Basham...
IN EVERY EDITION OF UTB THIS SEASON,
WE TALK TO A CURRENT MEMBER OF
UNITED’S FIRST TEAM SQUAD TO FIND OUT
SOME OF THEIR FAVOURITE THINGS...
FAVOURITE...
BAND OR ARTIST... I’ll probably have to say Coldplay. I listen to
them quite a bit to chill out and I’ve seen them live as well
and they were great.
BOX SET/TV SERIES... Yellowstone. I’ve really got into that recently.
FILM... Probably the second Top Gun. It’s a good adrenalin booster.
PHONE APP... Whatsapp.
COMPUTER GAME... Call of Duty. I’m on the modern
warfare quite a lot.
HOLIDAY DESTINATION... Hong Kong because we get to see
my wife’s family. We all like going there.
OTHER SPORT TO PLAY... Golf. We have a simulator at
the training ground and I’m always on that.
OTHER SPORT TO WATCH... Either cricket or golf.
COMEDIAN... I’ll go with Peter Kay. I liked
him when I was younger and he’s back
now, so I’ll try and catch him.
SPORTSMAN... At the minute, you’d have
to say Erling Haaland at Manchester
City. He’s lit the Premier League up.
CURRENT TEAMMATE... I’ll say Oli McBurnie
because he’s scoring goals!
GROUND TO PLAY AT... Tottenham Hotspur
Stadium. It’s a great venue.
MEAL... Spaghetti Bolognese. It’s
my pre-match meal and has
become a bit of a ritual.
CHOCOLATE BAR... Dairy Milk, maybe a
Fruit and Nut as well to mix it up!
KARAOKE SONG… Sweet Caroline,
everyone loves it, don’t they?

A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour
To mark the new season, we want to
make you aware of new measures
being taken across all of football
to ensure everyone can have a safe
and enjoyable experience. We are
supporting strong action from the
FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle
anti-social and criminal behaviours
that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of
the risks to fans and staff – pyros
can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius
and cause lifechanging injuries,
while entering the pitch endangers
players, managers and match
We know those who commit these
illegal acts do not represent the
UTB 89
WATFORD VISIT BRINGS BACK
MEMORIES FOR TC
There’s always something
a little extra in the game
for Blades legend Tony
Currie when Watford arrive
at Bramall Lane.
The Blades ambassador
began his professional
career with the Hornets
before United came calling
in 1968 and the rest, as
they say, is history.
But TC is forever grateful
for the opportunity granted
to him by Watford, who
helped kickstart a career
which saw Currie play in
the First Division, in a FA
Cup final and 17 times for
England.
TC told UTB: “I really
loved my time at Watford.
They gave me my chance
at 16 after QPR had
released me and I’ll be
forever grateful.
“I remember signing
professional on my 17th
birthday for Ken Furphy,
and I had a great start.
People might remember
that I actually started as a
striker, and I recall getting
nine in my first six games
with Watford – but all at
home! I do remember
hitting the post at Barrow
but for some reason it
didn’t happen in front of
goal on my travels!
“I think I only played 17
games at Watford which
included this game against
Hereford (pictured) in the
FA Cup. We won 3-0, and I
remember playing against
John Charles. Funnily
enough, in the next round
Watford drew United but
I wasn’t allowed to play
because I was close to
coming to Bramall Lane at
that time.
“Great times though, it’s
always nice to look back on
my spell with Watford.”
BOLTON WANDERERS
Chris began his career at Newcastle United but signed as a professional with Bolton
Wanderers. In 2006-07 he went on loan to National League side Stafford Rangers
making four appearances, including his first in the FA Cup, scoring one goal. The
following season he went on loan to League Two Rochdale, making his league debut, as
a substitute, on 12th February 2008 at home to Hereford United. He returned to Premier
League Bolton and scored his first goal on 11th April 2009 in their 3-4 defeat at Chelsea.
BLACKPOOL
In August 2010, Chris joined Premier League Blackpool. After one
season the Seasiders were relegated to the Championship where
Chris became a regular in the side.
UNITED
When his Blackpool contract expired he joined United in the
summer of 2014. He was immediately a regular in the Blades
side, having then made appearances in all four divisions. He
started every game in our first Premier League season. Chris
has made 326 league apperances (after Wrexham) for the
Blades, including 308 starts. Only 22 others have achieved
300 or more league appearances for the Blades. His 326 puts
him ahead of Harry Johnson and Tony Currie (both 313) and
Billy Sharp (320 after Wrexham) but 23 behind the next most
recent Blade to top 300. Who? (see below for the answer)
