we were glad to see the back of it! We are now 

focusing on all things positive. 

Here at NG HQ we want to get fitter (ready for 

a spring 10k - watch this space) and healthier.

various reasons, so we thought we would ask 

Cat’s dad, Pete, who used to run a wholefood 

shop, for some of his favourite veggie recipes. 

We hope you enjoy them.

Retro 

Eats! 

We would like to thank Cat’s 

lovely dad, Pete for these recipes. 

They are all tried and tested and 

we have all enjoyed them here 

at NG HQ, so we persuaded Pete 

to share them with you. 

The background to these very healthy 

recipes is fascinating – here Pete tells us 

how it all started; 

In 1980 a small group of people from 

Friends of the Earth decided to set up 

the Dandelion Wholefood Cooperative 

in Erdington, Birmingham, with a view to 

raising awareness about food matters. 

The underlying purpose behind Dandelion 

was to encourage people to think about 

where their food came from and how it 

was produced – this was long before the 

Fair Trade movement and our knowledge 

about climate change. 

As idealistic as Dandelion’s aims were back 

in the 1980’s, its objectives are just as, and 

perhaps even more relevant today. 

Every week a free recipe leaflet was 

produced for Dandelion’s customers. The 

cheese pie and spicy chickpea burgers 

were really popular and are perfect with 

the salad recipes. The chickpea burger 

recipe was born when one for chickpea 

and potato stew was misread. However, 

it was deemed so delicious that it was 

incorporated into Dandelion’s repertoire. 

They are lovely served with rice and red 

cabbage fried with onion, caraway seeds 

and vinegar – but just as good served in a 

bun and/or with salad. 

We really hope you enjoy these recipes 

and we would like to say a massive thank 

you to Pete for sharing them with us.

Cheese Pie 

The yoghurt gives the filling 

a tangy, refreshing taste. 

Another bonus is that it doesn’t 

have as many calories as the 

conventional cheese pie!! 

This recipe is for two pies – 

one to eat and one to freeze! 

However, a single pack of shop 

bought shortcrust pastry is 

likely to only make one pie, so 

buy two packs or just halve the 

quantities. 

Shortcrust pastry to line two 7” 

or 8” (18cm or 20cm) pie tins 

250gm mature cheddar cheese 

- grated 

450ml plain yoghurt 

4 tbs milk 

1 large onion - chopped 

1 tbs cooking oil 

2-3 eggs depending on size 

Salt and pepper to taste 

Method 

1. Blind bake the pastry cases 

for 10 to 15 mins at 180 o C 

(160 o C fan). 

2. Fry the chopped onion in 

the oil until soft and slightly 

browned. 

3. Beat together the eggs, 

yoghurt and milk with the 

seasonings. 

4. Fill the pastry cases with the 

grated cheese and scatter 

the onion on top. Pour the 

yoghurt mixture over the top 

and bake at 180 o C (160 o C 

fan) for 30-40 minutes until 

the filling is set and flecked 

golden brown. 

Spiced Chickpea 

Burgers 

Makes 8-10 patties. These don’t 

freeze very well – but they’re so 

delicious that won’t be an issue! 

400gm tin chickpeas, drained 

& rinsed 

2 large potatoes (approx. 

450gm) 

2 med. tomatoes - chopped 

1 large onion - chopped 

2½ tbs oil 

½ to 1 tsp dried ginger 

1 tsp salt 

1 to 2 tsp garam marsala 

½ to 1 tsp turmeric 

Flour for coating the burgers 

Method 

1. Peel, boil & mash potatoes 

– by all means add butter & 

milk but ensure the mash is 

not wet. 

2. Blitz the chickpeas in a 

processor (or use a masher). 

3. Fry the onion in ½ tbs oil 

until soft and set aside. 

4. Quarter the tomatoes & 

remove seeds. Chop into 

small pieces. 

5. Fry the chickpeas in the 

remaining oil, slowly adding 

the salt, spices & fried onion. 

6. After 5 mins or so, remove 

the mixture from the heat, 

and mix thoroughly with the 

mashed potato & chopped 

tomatoes. 

7. Form heaped tablespoons 

of the mixture into balls and 

press into burger shapes (use 

a burger press if you have 

one). 

8. Coat each burger in flour and 

fry until golden brown on 

both sides. 

Orange and Carrot 

Salad 

This is a simple, colourful 

aromatic salad that takes only 

a few minutes to put together, 

compliments both the cheese 

pie and burgers nicely. 

1 large orange 

2 large carrots 

Olive oil 

Red wine vinegar 

Salt and pepper 

Method 

1. Peel the orange, separate into 

segments and chop. 

2. Peel and grate the carrots. 

3. Mix the orange and carrots, 

drizzle with olive oil and 

vinegar and season to taste. 

Apple and Celery Salad 

Crunchy and tangy, this 

refreshing salad not only goes 

well with the pie and burgers, 

but the orange and carrot salad 

as well. 

1 large crisp eating apple 

2 large sticks of celery 

Olive oil 

Cider vinegar 

Salt and pepper 

Method 

1. Peel the apple, core and chop. 

2. Wash the sticks of celery, trim 

the ends and chop. 

3. Mix the apple and celery, 

drizzle with olive oil and 

vinegar and season to taste.

Share your garden bird sightings to contribute to a 

national survey. Here’s how… 

Last spring we spent a lot of time in our homes and 

gardens and so, by now, we may also be familiar with 

the regular wild visitors. Chances are you’ve been 

taking pleasure in putting seed onto a bird table and 

watching the different birds arriving throughout the 

day. Perhaps it has piqued your interest to know 

more about the familiar and unusual birds that 

you might have seen. If that’s the case, why not 

contribute to an ongoing survey on garden birds? 

Each week, all year round, for the past 25 years, 

‘citizen scientists’ have recorded the birds and other 

wildlife visiting their gardens, enabling researchers 

at the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) to answer 

important questions about garden wildlife. 

The BTO Garden BirdWatch offers an opportunity 

to learn more about garden birds and other wildlife 

while contributing directly to BTO’s important 

scientific research on the value of gardens for 

wildlife. The organisation say: “The more we know 

about how wildlife uses our gardens, the more we 

can make our cities, towns, villages and individual 

gardens better for nature.” 

The survey involves simply keeping a list of the birds 

you see visiting your garden over the course of a 

week, and then entering this into the BTO’s online 

recording system. You can also record other garden 

wildlife, such as butterflies and mammals. 

GET INVOLVED! 

Membership to the Garden BirdWatch is normally 

£17 for the year, however at the moment they are 

unable to offer joining packs so membership is 

FREE for a year. You will still have access to the 

online recording system, a regular e-newsletter with 

information on recording and identifying garden 

wildlife, as well as access to the BTO’s team of 

wildlife experts, to answer your questions.

our well-being, and the easiest place to watch and 

learn about wildlife is in our own gardens. We hope 

that this opportunity to join the Garden BirdWatch

Slow, Slow, Quick, Quick, Slow... by Gloria Morgan 

Back in the day when every village hall had its 

Saturday night ‘hop’, you could be certain to find large 

numbers of young people diligently practising their 

waltzes, quicksteps and foxtrots to the unmistakable 

strains of Victor Sylvester’s “strict tempo” dance 

rhythms. 

There was always a weekly evening dance practice 

locally. Most high streets had a Burton’s tailor 

shop and these frequently had a large room above, 

equipped with a ‘sprung’ wooden floor, making them 

ideal for ballroom dancing. 

A lot of couples got competitive. There were plenty 

of opportunities, with local, regional and national 

contests. In 1953 one started on TV. 

The BBC launched “Come Dancing”, which was hugely 

popular and ran for more than 400 episodes. There 

could never be too many frills on the frocks, never 

too many sequins, and never too many shiny shoes. 

The most starry venue for dancing competitions was 

Blackpool Tower Ballroom, an immense space with 

as much glitter and glam as anybody could possibly 

desire. 

Eventually, among the general population, the craze 

for “slow, slow, quick, quick, slow” faded away. No 

one organised a dance in the church hall any more. 

Interests changed, habits changed, the telly took 

over as everyone’s main leisure time entertainment. 

Happily, a few stalwarts kept the dance competitions 

going, kept the glamour alive, and kept the standards 

high.

I thought this transcended what we are used 

to seeing as ballroom dancing and moved towards 

the realms of musical theatre. 

I was reminded 

of the groundbreaking 

work of 

choreographer 

Matthew Bourne 

who presented a 

version of the ballet 

“Swan Lake” in 1995 

as it had never been 

seen before. He retained Tchaikowsky’s music, but 

dispensed with the ballerinas in tu-tu’s to represent 

the swans, and instead used a cast of all male 

dancers, clad only in white feathers and performing 

bare-foot. I saw this live on stage at the time, and was 

blown away by the sheer power of it. 

I felt the same intensity and vigour in that paso-doble. 

Nothing about it was Spanish, but everything was 

as fearless as a matador, as outrageous as a pirate, 

challenging in its choreography and precise in its 

timing and presentation! It was a tour de force. 

When the Strictly live tour comes to the Nottingham 

Arena in February, I shall be there to see it first-hand. 

I cannot wait. 

When “Strictly Come Dancing” arrived on our screens 

in 2004 it was a hit, with the added attraction of 

celebrities being partnered with professional ballroom 

dancers. Eighteen years later it is still delighting 

millions of people on a Saturday night. Everyone 

agrees the most recent season was exceptional and 

the final, the best ever. 

I would have been

Increasingly cars are being 

fitted with lazy automatic 

gearboxes no matter what 

the model. And so it is 

really pleasing to see a 6 

speed manual in the Fiat 

500X Sport. This makes for 

a far more engaging driving 

experience. 

When I first sit in the driving 

seat it feels like a giant was in it 

before me as I am sat very low 

down and struggle to see out 

of the windscreen. It doesn’t 

take long to adjust the manually 

operated seat to my liking. 

The Fiat is refreshing and has a 

character of its own. Externally it 

is finished in a bright blue and the 

designers have had a bit of fun 

with its styling, setting it apart 

from the bland competition. So 

often these days cars look and 

feel clinical but I like to see a 

personality shine through and 

the 500X has it in spades. 

Previously I have been driving 

a VW Tiguan that overall was 

immensely irritating due to its 

over sensitive touchscreen, the 

fact that the heating and fan 

were operated by scrolling and 

the cruise control having a mind 

of its own. I like the design of the 

dashboard in the Fiat, which is 

easy to operate and has a good 

amount of buttons and switches, 

scoring well with me. The Tiguan 

is a competitor to the 500X and 

although the Italian feels perhaps 

a little less sophisticated, in 

terms of ergonomics the Fiat 

wins hands down. 

Looking at the engine, I feel that 

Italy has trounced Germany. 

This fairly sizeable Fiat is a 

mere 1.3 litre petrol. Yet it is 

150bhp, travels from 0 to 60mph 

in 9.1secs and has a top speed 

of 124mph. It generates 156g/ 

km of CO2. It costs £28,785. 

This compares to the VW Tiguan 

R-Line which is a 1.5-litre 

with the same bhp. It is 0.1 of 

a second slower on the 0 to 60, 

has a 2mph faster top speed 

and travels 2 miles further on 

a gallon. It generates 9g/km 

of CO2 more than the Fiat and 

costs over £4,000 extra but 

then it does have a large glass 

panoramic sunroof and a power 

boot lid that the Fiat does not. 

I take it for a spin to 

Bedfordshire. Over the course of 

the 115 mile journey the ride is 

comfortable. It does feel smaller 

than the Tiguan.

The TomTom satnav is reliable 

but try as we might we cannot 

get it to talk to us. The cruise 

control is not as sophisticated 

either. The digital speed reading 

vanishes on occasions, which 

is a bit unsettling and the fuel 

gauge drops far too quickly for 

my liking. I then realise it only 

has a 48 litre fuel tank, meaning 

that it will travel about 300 miles 

on a tank.

Winter Car Maintenance: 

Top Tips To Prepare For The Cold Weather

Breakdowns and accidents are more common in 

the winter when road conditions are challenging. 

But with a bit of planning, you can ensure your car 

is ready for the winter weather. Here are our top 

essential car maintenance tips that anyone can 

follow. 

1. Check your oil levels and keep an eye on your 

fuel gauge 

According to the RAC, one in three roadside 

breakdowns involve cars that are dangerously low 

on oil. When the car is fully warmed up, take out 

the dipstick and check that the oil level is between 

the minimum and maximum marks, and top up if 

necessary. Being stranded with an empty tank in 

freezing conditions is no picnic, so keep plenty of 

fuel in the tank and don’t try to eek out the last few 

miles when the warning light comes on. 

2. Keep your lights clean 

Snow, rain, ice and salt can play havoc with your car 

and can make your lights dangerously grimy. You 

can lose an estimated 40% of luminosity in about 

20 miles on a damp, gritted motorway, so keep your 

lights clean by rubbing over them with a cloth or – if 

you have them fitted – use the headlamp washers. 

Wipe down your number plate too - you could 

face a fine if you drive around with an unreadable 

registration plate. 

3. Check your tyres, battery and brakes 

Stopping distances increase in icy, snowy or wet 

conditions so don’t drive around on worn tyres. 

Tyres need a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm by law, 

but experts recommend you change tyres at 3mm 

to maintain safe stopping distances. Don’t forget 

to check you have a roadworthy spare too. The 

risk of battery failure is greater in cold, wet and icy 

weather, so aim to change your car’s battery every 

three years if possible, or sooner if it’s causing you 

problems in the cold weather. Your brakes need 

to be in tip-top condition, especially in winter, so if 

they squeal, make other noises or generate unusual 

sensations, get them checked. 

4. Check your wiper blades and top up on 

windscreen wash 

Check your wipers are in good condition, with no 

tears or holes, and can clean your windscreen 

properly. You can give them a wipe with a clean cloth 

every now and then to remove any trapped grit or 

leaves. But if your windscreen is frozen don’t pull the 

wiper blades off frozen glass or turn them on as the 

rubber may tear. Check the levels in your windscreen 

washer. During winter you’ll be using a lot of washer 

fluid and not only is it dangerous to have an empty 

washer bottle, it’s illegal too. 

5. Carry the right gear 

Ensure you keep the following items in your car, 

especially if you’re planning a long journey and/ 

or you live in a rural or countryside community: an 

ice scraper and de-icer, a warning triangle, warm 

clothing and a blanket, rug or sleeping bag, practical 

footwear like wellies, a torch and spare batteries, 

a mobile phone and charger, a shovel (in snowy 

conditions).

Snowdrops 

Snowdrops are one of the 

first flowers of the year, 

traditionally putting on 

a show for Candlemas, 

(2nd February) and they 

symbolise Hope. Climate 

change is now seeing 

Snowdrops flower earlier 

and earlier. 

Snowdrops flower well in moist 

shade, although they don’t 

like waterlogging. The bulbs 

notoriously dry out rapidly 

out of the soil so it’s best to 

plant them when growing and 

flowering. Pot-grown plants 

can be planted at any time. 

Many nurseries sell them “in 

the green”; as bunches of 

leafy bulbs freshly dug from 

the soil just after flowering 

has finished. Dry bulbs rarely 

succeed. Add compost or leaf 

mould to the soil and plant 

about 4in / 10cm deep. Once 

you have an established clump 

you can sit back and enjoy the 

show year after year. There’s 

no need to cut back the leaves 

after flowering as they feed 

the bulbs and soon die back 

naturally. If you are growing 

your snowdrops in grass, avoid 

mowing until the leaves die 

back. 

If your snowdrops eventually 

become shy of flowering, it’s 

time to dig them up before they 

die back and divide the clumps 

before replanting in refreshed 

soil. 

The only problem you are likely 

to encounter is that squirrels 

and less commonly mice will 

dig up the bulbs when you first 

plant them. Physical barriers 

such as rabbit wire can deter 

squirrels; lay as a sheet across 

the area, weighted down and 

hidden by a mulch of leaves or 

make a dome or frame to cover 

smaller areas. 

Snowdrops can be confused 

with snowflakes (Leucojum) 

some of which also flower in 

spring, others in summer. These 

can be planted from dry bulbs 

more successfully. The spring 

flowering ones are varieties of 

L. vernum; the summer ones 

tend to be a lot taller. 

There are now many hundreds 

of varieties of snowdrop 

and collectors, known as 

Galanthophiles, pay big money 

for rare and new varieties. For 

the less smitten gardener there 

are plenty of common varieties 

at reasonable prices; the choice 

is for single or double flowers 

and green or yellow markings. 

Snowdrops can be planted 

alongside other early flowering 

bulbs and corms such as 

crocus, cyclamen and dog’s 

tooth violet. They also 

associate well with hellebores, 

winter aconite and winter 

flowering shrubs like lonicera 

or viburnum. In all cases it’s 

best to keep the snowdrops in 

clumps for greater impact.

The 

Driving Tale 

I hate driving. My kids hate my driving and Gary 

definitely hates my driving. So I do the world a 

favour and drive as little as possible. 

Even before I passed my test, I managed to squash 

my boyfriends Ford Capri into my dad’s bay window. 

In my defence, the bonnets on those cars are 

way too long and second, when someone starts 

screaming ‘brake!’ it’s likely to cause panic and your 

foot can accidently press the wrong pedal. Anyway 

the (ex) boyfriend’s car was a write off and I drove a 

Mini for a long while afterwards! 

Fast forward to my late 40’s. We had a lovely VW 

campervan. Gary’s pride and joy. Within a week of 

a very expensive re-spray I had managed to parallel 

park it into my neighbours car and then wrap it 

round a lamppost in a car park. Honestly, why would 

you put lampposts right next to parking bays? The 

patch up cost me an extra £600 and a self imposed 

life time ban from ever driving her again. 

Thinking about it, car parks and parking are the 

bane of my life and the source of most of my 

mishaps. 

After passing my test and with youth on my side 

I was a pretty confident driver. I used to take a 

long wheel base van all over the country selling 

dips (that’s another story…) and living in London, I 

wouldn’t think twice about driving anywhere. In fact, 

I worked out that I probably wasted at least two full 

years of my life queuing on the North Circular Road. 

I’m not sure when it all started to go downhill 

(literally in one case) and I became a total 

nightmare behind the wheel. It appears to coincide 

with the arrival of my kids. Let’s blame them 

anyway. 

When we moved to Nottingham, I had a sandwich 

bar for a while and we had a delivery van. I would 

be up at 5am and stop at a newsagents to collect 

the morning papers. One morning, when I came 

out, the van was gone. Panic stricken, I was about 

to call the police and report a stolen vehicle when 

I heard a whistle – about 300 yards down the (very 

small) hill. Two builders were holding the bonnet 

of the van. Apparently, I had forgotton to put the 

handbrake on. Free bacon cobs helped me keep 

that story from Gary for years. 

While proofing this article, Gary helpfully reminded 

me about the time when I managed to get the 

campervan stuck on the ramp coming out of the 

car park at Asda in Arnold. The up-ramp height 

sign was being repaired and I took a chance and 

parked on the roof. On the way down, the reason 

for the sign became apparent as I crunched to a 

halt. I had two hysterical (in a bad way) kids in the 

back and had to reverse back up and come down 

the ‘up’ ramp while two trolley assistants held the 

rest of the shoppers up. It was so bad, to this day 

I automatically duck when entering a multi-story. 

Thanks for the reminder Gaz. 

On a roll, Gary then asked me whether I was going 

to mention the time when I reversed into another 

car in a car park while the owner looked on. Or 

when I reversed onto the drive, missed and ended 

up churning the lawn up. Or when I accidentally 

drove on the wrong side of the road (in this country, 

so no excuses). Or when.....Yes Gary, we get the 

point. And no, I am not going to mention any of 

them!

RED NOTICE 

Red Notice is the latest blockbuster by director 

Rawson Marshall Thurber. Special Agent Hartley 

is framed and works alongside world-famous 

thief Booth to recover a stolen jewelled egg 

and clear his name. Dwayne Johnson and Ryan 

Reynolds find themselves caged in another 

mediocre leather-jacket-sporting flick. Following 

2016’s Central Intelligence, Thurber seems 

keen on continuing the trend of combining 

two actors with contrasting personalities and 

having the film’s entire value come down to 

the interactions between them in a cardboard 

cut-out crime investigation film. Both actors 

are unable to bring anything new with scripts, 

plotlines and action tropes that are so cliched 

this film should be considered a parody. 

Attempts at humour are stale revisitations at 

best and Johnson’s potential at breaking his 

streak of dull performances is squandered with 

the role of yet another level-headed lone-ranger 

FBI officer. While Gal Gadot’s performance 

as the main villain, Bishop, makes for a more 

well-rounded character than having an actor 

play themselves for commercial appeal, it is not 

enough to save Red Notice from mediocrity. 

The narrative of a loudmouthed thief and a 

framed dutiful officer having a rocky relationship 

while working together to defeat a supreme 

manipulator has very little imaginative bends

interact with 

his nephew, is 

transformed 

into something 

far more 

emotionally complex. Throughout the 

runtime, we see as many complexities 

in the young child as we do the grown 

man, challenging the notion that kids are 

lesser forms of adults, when really, it’s a 

whole different viewpoint that’s hard to 

break down. But I believe that Mike Mills 

truly gets to the core of this complicated 

dynamic, viewing contrasting generational 

perspectives as equally important. The 

film is also incredibly well made. The black 

and white cinematography is beautiful and 

adds to this delicate, foggy city vibe that 

perfectly reflects the film’s themes and 

tonality. The use of music is also brilliant 

and gives it an almost abstract feel. This 

works particularly well during the extended 

monologues that are present during 

the film, expressing emotion through 

interview-style sequences that draw 

parallels with the greater narrative being 

told.

New cop joins force aged 46 after being inspired by 

grandfather’s war heroics 

A 46-year-old 

parent is training 

to become a 

police officer 

having been 

inspired by his 

grandfather’s 

service during 

the Second World 

War. 

PC Hakeem Ahmed said he wants to 

serve and protect others – just like 

his grandfather did when he joined the 

Royal Navy and helped defend Britain 

at sea. 

It is estimated over five million Muslims 

participated on the allied side of the 

war, including Hakeem’s grandfather, 

Muhammed Hussain. 

Hakeem, who is a qualified Islamic 

scholar, said his grandfather’s role in 

the war – and that of a second relative 

– had inspired him to serve the public. 

The married father-of-four, who is also 

a foster parent, said: “My grandfather 

was on one ship and his younger 

brother was on another. His brother’s 

ship was bombed and he was killed. My 

grandfather was greatly affected by the 

war and refused to talk about it but I am 

very proud of his courage and sense of 

duty. 

“My grandfather’s service has 

encouraged me to serve the community 

that I live in.” 

Hakeem is training to become a 

police officer after gaining a place on 

the force’s Police Constable Degree 

Apprenticeship (PCDA) programme. 

As part of the PCDA, he is now on the 

first year of a three-year probationary 

period where he will do weeks of 

training school alongside the input from 

the University of Derby. He will also 

finish up with a degree. 

Born and raised in Nottingham after 

his parents moved to Britain in 1955, 

Hakeem’s journey to Nottinghamshire 

Police has been decades in the making. 

After finishing school, he achieved a 

Higher National Diploma in computing 

at Leicester’s De Montfort University 

in 1999. 

After working in computing for a 

few years, he became increasingly 

interested in Islam and decided to 

study at Jamiatul ilm wal Huda – an 

Islamic university in Lancashire, where 

he qualified as an Islamic scholar after 

studying for seven years. 

By 2009 he had launched an education 

facility in Sneinton where Hakeem and 

four other teachers taught up to 120 

students a day, four days a week. 

Last year, the coronavirus pandemic 

sadly forced the closure of the academy 

and Hakeem began looking for his next 

challenge. 

He decided to apply for a job with 

Nottinghamshire Police after learning 

about its shared PROUD values – 

professional; respect for all; one team; 

utmost integrity, trust and honesty; and 

doing it differently.

When it’s cold and dark outside, the last thing 

many of us want to do is get out and about. Winter 

can be a particularly difficult time for those of us 

who are eldery and/or vulnerable. 

Over the last couple of years with restrictions 

imposed on every part of our lives, many of us have 

struggled with loneliness. Even now, with restrictions 

easing, we might not feel totally at ease in crowds or 

groups and we might have lost touch with friends. 

With 3.6 million older people in the UK living by 

themselves, finding support in one another is 

crucial. Age UK Nottingham provide a wide range of 

services, all of which can help combat feelings of 

loneliness. 

Lunch Clubs 

These are a great way to socialise. Giving us the 

opportunity to meet new friendly faces for a chat. 

Many lunch clubs also provide games, sing songs 

and even guest speakers! There are a number of 

clubs listed in the Community Diary section of this 

magazine. 

Computer Courses 

Basic IT training can provide vital skills for those 

out of touch with the digital world. By linking to the 

internet we can see and talk to family and friends, do 

our shopping and even manage bills. It might not be 

the same as seeing someone in person but it would 

certainly help combat feelings of isolation. Age UK 

run ClickSilver Connections, free one-to-one courses 

for over 55’s with limited (or no) digital skills. 

Telephone Friendship (The Silver Line) 

If you are unable to get out or you don’t yet feel 

ready, a simple, free telephone conversation can 

go a long way. The Silver Line is a free, confidential 

helpline and provides comfort and company from 

the safety of your own home. It is open 24 hours, 

every day of the year. 

Day Services (Day Centres) 

Day services can be a great way to get involved in 

group and community activities. They support a 

range of needs and you can get involved in a lots of 

different pastimes like music, quizzes, exercise, arts 

and crafts, and day trips. There will usually be a hot 

lunch and refreshments. Some of these services 

are council run, others are private. Depending upon 

your circumstances there may be a cost involved.

Find Something You Love! 

Having a hobby, something you love, can really 

help keep us mentally and physically fit. Whether 

it’s knitting, gardening, walking, gaming, puzzles, 

musical instruments, painting, and even reading. 

Finding likeminded people to share your passion 

with can be a game changer. Men in Sheds is a 

great example of this and there are ‘Sheds’ all over

Back in September last year, one of our new 

students, who has cancer, told us how she is using 

Maggie’s to support her and her family. 

Our student is such an inspiration, we decided that, 

as a college, we wanted to do something to make a 

difference, show our support for her, and raise money 

for this amazing charity. 

Maggie’s fundraising campaign “Go Outrageously 

Orange” seemed like the perfect place to start. A 

festive ‘outrageously orange’ walk was organised 

by our Early Years students and staff with the 

aim to raise as much money as possible through 

sponsorship. 

It became a family affair when my children and 

husband also planned a sponsored football match to 

help towards the fundraising goal. 

On the big day, we walked from Nottingham College 

City Hub to Maggie’s in outrageously orange festive 

clothes. Apart from having a great time, we managed 

to raise an amazing £3000! 

Maggie’s are an incredible charity, and we are really 

proud as a college to be able to help patients, who 

use this support. 

Thank you to everyone who took part, especially the 

Early Years staff and students and to all those that 

donated. It was truly overwhelming.

I am writing this on a gloomy covid ridden December 

day, and it seems far away from our summer bowls 

season. 

Last year, after a faltering start, we settled down to 

enjoy good outdoor competitions with some league 

success. Friendly matches and county competitions 

made up a full summer programme. 

Following our AGM in October, in early December 

we held our club competitions presentation night at 

the Hoggs Head, Awsworth. It was a chance to enjoy 

good company, after a stressful time for many. 

The 2022 bowls green shoots are already starting to 

show through. Our fixture programme is now sorted, 

with a good mixture of league, cup and friendly 

matches arranged. The county competitions are 

being entered and we look forward to the lengthening 

days ahead. 

On a serious note: Amateur sports clubs rely on the 

dedication of club officials, drawn largely from retired 

playing members. Although the game does attract 

some young players, clubs are sustained largely by 

older players. As retirement from work looms, bowls 

is one way of keeping fit and active into old age. 

In winter, some of us are also keeping the old knee 

joints going by playing indoors.

Achieving your exercise goals in Ashfield has

87% of people GIVE UP! 

It’s a different world we live in these days, 

self-care is something we MUST prioritise. 

From one day to the next our plans can quickly 

change. Restrictions, rules and guidelines are 

regularly changing. 

It makes it extremely hard to plan an approach 

you feel is within your control when things are 

forever being changed. It can be overwhelming 

and this in turn can lead us to say “why bother?” 

I’ve spent over a decade in the fitness industry 

and I’ve never seen such uncertainty from people 

in how to make their health a priority. 

Sabotage 

Something you might not be aware of, yet 

it happens without us realising... yes, the 

unforgiving nature of self-sabotaging. 

Having fun, freedom and the ability to make 

future plans is what we thrive on. 

We get in shape for a holiday, a wedding or 

just to feel good in summer while we are out 

and about. But none of those things are now 

guaranteed. We all live in a world of massive 

uncertainty, so a lack of self-care has become 

the norm for many of us. 

Unmonitored drinking, plenty of fast food and 

takeaways, box-set after box-set. With the 

mentality… I’ll sort it out when life’s back to normal. 

For now, this is our normal, and looking after 

ourselves should be right up there as a number 

one priority. 

What To Focus On 

Self-care means looking after our mind, body and 

energy. Here are some tips; 

1. Create something or do something monthly 

for yourself. 

2. Look after your nutrition (recipe provided to try). 

3. Move daily, it doesn’t need to be vast amounts. 

Just make an effort to move. 

4. Read or listen to something daily that helps 

your mind grow. 

5. Get enough sleep, team “no sleep” doesn’t 

work for your body or mind. 

6. Drink your water, yes even if you don’t like to, 

it’s needed... 

7. Limit social media! Take regular breaks. 

8. Speak with someone if you’re struggling. Too 

many suffer in silence.

Under new rules which are due to come into force 

in England, microchipping your cat will become a 

legal requirement, just as it is for dogs. 

Not only does it mean that cats are more likely to 

be reunited with their owners quickly if they go 

wandering off, or become injured, but it also helps as 

a deterrent to cat theft. 

Cats that aren’t microchipped aren’t traceable so 

it’s harder to reunite them with their owners. If their 

owners can’t be found, they may have to go to a 

rescue centre. 

Cats will have to be microchipped by the time they are 

20 weeks of age. A microchip is a tiny chip inserted 

using a needle under the skin between the shoulder 

blades. For most cats, it will just feel like an injection. 

Microchips can be inserted by vets or nurses and the 

unique numbers are stored on a central database. 

The chips cannot usually be felt under the skin. 

However, they may very occasionally migrate or fall 

out, so vets will check the chip regularly by scanning 

the cat. 

If your cat is not already microchipped, we strongly 

recommend that you make an appointment to get this 

done as soon as possible.
