Example 1 - £88,000 

Mr P. a miner from EDWALTON, worked at COTGRAVE 

COLLIERY. In 1991, after the pit was shut down, 

he was persuaded by an agent of PRUDENTIAL to 

transfer his miners pension to them. When he retired 

he realised he was getting less than his friends who 

kept their BRITISH COAL PENSION.

Mr N. from CHILWELL worked as a driver for

Amazing Grazing 

Graze boxes, sharing platters, nibbles – 

whatever you like to call them, these tasty, 

beautiful looking plates of deliciousness are all 

the rage at the minute. 

There are loads of great local businesses that 

can deliver wonderful, ready made boxes 

for you to tuck into but if you fancy making 

your own, here are some ideas and recipes to 

inspire you. 

A bit of planning is essential. The size of 

your platter will depend on how many you 

are feeding. The ingredients will depend 

on whether you have veggies, vegans or all 

meat eaters. The contents will depend on the 

time of year and the event. You could have a 

theme like Mediterranean, round-the-world or 

traditional ploughmans. 

We would recommend a mix of homemade 

and shop bought produce – because let’s face 

it, life is too short! 

Try to keep it as bright as possible – with 

contrasting colours next to each other. Think 

about textures. You want some crunch as 

well as some soft (bread sticks next to a dip). 

As for fl avours, if you have spicy food fans 

then add some chilli jam, spicy sausage and 

Mexican cheese. For those who prefer things 

mild, add some traditional chutney and some 

mild soft cheese. 

Fruit is always a nice touch. Chopped 

strawberries, green and red grapes, 

blueberries, fi gs and kumquats all look 

amazing and go well with savoury. 

The recipes opposite are all easy and quick 

to make and will add a personal touch to your 

platter. Have a go, let your imagination run 

wild – and send us a photo!

we used: 

Strawberries, Medjool 

dates, Mikado chocolate 

sticks, walnuts, 

homemade chilli jam, 

homemade salsa, 

homemade hummus, 

carrot and celery sticks, 

garlic and herb goats 

cheese, stilton, sourdough 

crackers, breadsticks 

wrapped in Parma ham, 

sliced chorizo and salami, 

green olives, grapes, 

cherry tomatoes and 

chorizo sticks. 

We served warm feta 

soda bread in a basket 

on the side.

Quick Salsa 

400g tin chopped tomatoes 

½ small red onion – finely 

chopped 

1 clove garlic – grated 

Splash of wine vinegar 

Juice of ½ lime 

½ green chilli – finely chopped 

(optional) 

2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander 

Pinch sugar 

Salt & pepper to taste 

Method 

Using a sieve – drain the tomatoes 

from the juice (save this for 

another recipe). Use a spoon to 

push the juice through the sieve. 

In a bowl mix all the ingredients 

together. Season to taste and 

store in the fridge until needed. 

Only add chilli if you want a really 

spicy salsa. 

Really Easy 

Hummus 

400g tin chickpeas – drained & 

rinsed 

2 tbsp tahini paste 

4 cloves garlic 

Juice of 1 x lemon 

1 tsp ground cumin 

6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 

Plenty of salt to taste 

Method 

Place the chickpeas in a food 

processor (you could mash them 

if you don’t have one). Add all the 

other ingredients and whizz until 

well blended. It’s important to keep 

tasting and add extra salt and lemon 

juice if necessary. Make it to your 

taste. If it’s too stiff , add a splash 

of water. To serve, sprinkle with 

paprika and olive oil. 

This recipe is easy to adapt – 

sometimes we add chilli powder or 

a couple of roasted red peppers 

(peeled). You could add some 

coriander and more lemon. The 

possibilities are endless. 

Feta Soda Bread 

200g plain flour (+ extra for 

dusting) 

200g wholemeal flour 

1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 

1 tsp sea salt 

1 bunch chives – snipped into 

small pieces 

100g feta – crumbled 

200g natural yogurt 

100ml milk 

2 tsp herbs (thyme or za’atar 

work well) 

Method 

Heat oven to 200°C. We used a cast 

iron 24cm lidded casserole dish. You 

could use a baking sheet. 

Place the fl ours in a bowl along with 

the bicarb of soda, salt, chives and 

cheese. Mix the yogurt and milk 

together in a jug and add to the dry 

mix, bringing it all together. You may 

need to add a bit more milk. You are 

looking for an elastic dough, not too 

sticky. Place on a fl oured surface 

and shape it into a round. Dust the 

base of the casserole/baking sheet 

with fl our. 

Place the dough in the casserole/ 

on the baking sheet. Deeply score 

the top into 4 x quarters. Brush with 

milk. Place lid on (if using) and bake 

for 30 mins. Then take lid off and 

bake for another 10. The top should 

be nicely browned and the bottom 

should sound hollow when tapped. 

On a baking tray it should take about 

40 mins. Serve hot with butter.

MONKEYING 

AROUND AT GO APE 

Go Ape in Nottingham is based at 

Sherwood Pines and they offer 4 

different tree top activities based 

on your age and ability. The Treetop 

Challenge (£34) aimed at adults 

and the more adventurous children 

(10+) over 1.4m. The Treetop Adventure 

Plus (£24) an extension of 

the Treetop Adventure for older kids 

over 1m. The Treetop Adventure 

(£19) that is suitable for challenging 

grown up kids over 1.2m and 

The Nets Adventure (£19) which is 

tree houses, netted walkways and 

bouncy nets full of inflatable balls, 

all high above the forest floor. 

Go Ape is open for tree swinging 

adventures every day of the week 

throughout the year and we chose 

to visit them on a Tuesday for their 

last session of the day which is 3pm. 

I took the whole family along for 

a tree climbing, swinging and zip 

trekking Treetop Challenge, including 

grandad, teenagers and Harry 

aged 10, all of whom should feel at 

home swinging through the trees. 

Our session started with a safety 

briefing, being strapped into a harness 

and then practicing using the 

safety equipment, clipping onto the 

safety lines and swapping from one 

obstacle to another.

After this we were set free to traverse 

the course by ourselves. We 

climbed a ladder up into the tree 

tops and then decided which out of 

two routes to take. The trails involve 

crawling through barrel type tunnels, 

edging along tightrope wires, 

stepping across wooden slats, zip 

wires to the ground and much, 

much more. My favourite and scariest 

moment was swinging across 

into a cargo net after dropping a 

few feet first. The whole experience 

was great for someone like me who 

was determined to fight my fear of 

heights and have a fun day out with 

the family. 

The whole adventure from start 

to finish lasted about 3 hours and 

was a fantastic day out with lots of 

laughs and monkeying around. 

Did you know that the Go Ape idea 

was dreamed up by Tris and Becs 

back in 2001 when they were on 

holiday in France and came across 

a family swinging through the trees. 

They saw how much fun they were 

all having and came up with the 

idea of Go Ape. Thanks Tris and 

Becs we loved our adventure.

Becoming a first-time dog parent is one of life’s 

joys, so what can you expect when you’re petspecting? 

Below is a list of important considerations to think 

about before getting a puppy. 

The environment 

Ask the breeder if you can see the mum and dad. 

You should, at least, be able to see the mum if the 

puppies are there. Dad may have been a stud from 

elsewhere, however mum should be present and 

appear comfortable around her pups. 

You should also ask to see the place where the 

puppies are being raised. Always ask to meet them 

in their environment. 

Vaccination records and flea/worm treatment 

status 

Ask for vaccination records and flea/worm 

treatment status. Pups are usually wormed at 2, 5 

and 8 weeks of age before leaving mum. A vet health 

check should be done before you acquire your pup 

and even the first vaccination given. A vaccination 

record should be given to you for your records. 

Ideally a date of birth should be known to help with 

any further vaccinations to complete the primary 

vaccination course. Remember, a pup shouldn’t be 

leaving mum before 8 weeks of age. 

Microchipping 

It is the breeder’s responsibility to have the pup 

microchipped. The chip should be in the breeder’s 

details, but they will provide you with the information 

to update to your details. Microchipping prior to 

going to a new home is a legal requirement. 

Health issues 

A breeder should be prepared to take your pup back 

and give you a refund if you notice any discrepancies 

or health issues that you were unaware of at the 

time of purchase. Ensure that a ‘purchase contract’ 

is drafted and signed by both parties. 

Diet 

Ask the breeder what food they have been feeding 

the puppy. A good breeder will be prepared and 

provide you with information on feeding, so you are 

prepared to continue the same diet or even give 

you some to go home with. A sudden change in diet 

and a change of home is enough stress to cause an 

upset tummy. 

Insurance 

A puppy usually comes with 4 weeks free insurance 

from the breeder. If not, make sure that you have this 

prepared/looked into for the time they come home 

with you. 

The cost of puppies has increased considerably over 

the years so you have every right to ask as many 

questions as you would like to ensure that the puppy 

chosen is right for you and your family.

Dogs smell – fact. They smell worse when they 

are wet and they smell significantly worse if they 

decide to roll in something, as I know only too well. 

Previously, I have mentioned that Gary and I have 

an odourometer – basically if we can get halfway 

home from a walk without gagging then Herbie has 

escaped the dreaded bath. 

The 

Smelly 

Tail 

On a recent trip to Northumberland, we were 

walking along a deserted, wind-swept beach when 

the little scamp disappeared into the dunes. After a 

10 minute search, we found him in his high delights, 

rolling over a rotting seal carcass. After a struggle, 

Gary eventually managed to get a lead on him 

and literally drag him off the disgusting thing. He 

then proceeded to head dive into the sand and roll 

around in ecstacy for another 5 minutes (Herbie, 

not Gary). 

Heading back to the rented cottage, it slowly 

dawned on us that the putrid smell of death 

following us was in fact Herbie. Luckily, the cottage 

was within walking distance, but with no dog 

shampoo and an upstairs bathroom we had to 

innovate. After finding some kids shampoo and a 

mop bucket we kept washing him in the garden until 

he smelt more like watermelon than warthog. 

Worse for us, this time we had driven. There was no 

way he was getting in the car smelling like a corpse. 

After pondering all the options (leave him on 

the beach, take him home stinking, wash him in 

the sea), we proceeded to one end of the beach 

where Gary stripped down to his undercrackers 

and dragged the little sod into the sea where he 

attempted to wash him with a seaweed flannel. 

I helpfully recorded the whole sorry incident for 

social media whilst almost wetting myself. It was 

only as Gary emerged from the waves like 007 

(more like 005½) that we realised an elderly couple 

had perched on a bench at the back of the beach 

and were chuckling away whilst tucking into their 

pack-up. Who needs the cinema? 

Day three was thankfully incident free, however 

our final day held more olfactory delights. Beach 

number three. Dead seal number three (how 

can that be??) This one was buried in the sand, 

disguised as a rock. It was only when the rolling 

started that we realised what it was. Too late. 

Again. The damage was done. And this was just 

before we set off home so we had no access to the 

cottage and it was way too cold for another strip

we knew what was going on, Herbie was rolling all 

over the rotting pile of blubber. This one still had all 

it’s teeth! Gross. 

There was no option but to pile him in the back of 

the car and for us to spend the next few hours with 

the windows down, wondering whether the rescue 

centre had a returns policy! 

We were reliably informed by a local, it had been 

on the beach for 14 months after being towed by a 

tractor back out to sea a number of times. Errr, try 

burying it then, instead of leaving it to rot.

Everybody’s Dog by Gloria Morgan 

I usually write about something a bit historical, or a 

bit whimsical, but this time I have something personal 

I would like to share with you, and above all I want to 

express my most sincere gratitude and thanks. 

I have a beautiful rescue dog named Jill who is the 

loveliest companion. She is nearly twelve, a most 

placid, obedient, playful, happy dog. She came to me 

from Protecting Pre-Loved Border Collies at the end 

of June 2020. It’s clear that she had been much loved 

and well cared for by her original owner as she has 

been totally trusting and affectionate from the very 

start, and we have developed a lovely bond between 

us. 

Jill came to me 

with a medical 

problem – she 

had a large 

fatty lump 

under her left 

arm-pit which 

extended 

down her leg. 

It must have 

been growing 

slowly for a 

very long time. 

Because of this 

pre-existing 

condition it was impossible to get pet insurance, 

therefore Protecting Pre-Loved Border Collies 

undertook to pay the cost of any veterinary treatment 

relating to the lump. 

so much of their resources on Jill could mean their 

having to turn away other collies in need of re-homing. 

Such was my concern that, with the help of 

Kimberley’s “Mad Hatter”, we set up a fund-raising 

appeal, asking people to donate their small change, to 

try to reimburse the charity as much as possible. 

The kindness and generosity of people has left me 

amazed and very humbled. Donations flowed into the 

website. People stopped me in the street and pressed 

money into my hands. Through everyone’s kindness 

and generosity we have been able to repay the charity 

every penny. 

Jill has exceeded all my expectations in her recovery. 

She is pain-free now which is wonderful. She 

rebalanced herself on three legs within 48 hours of 

the operation and can walk just fine. The wound has 

healed beautifully, and the fur is growing back. She 

is bright and bouncy and wants to play all the time. 

The tail never stops wagging. Without a doubt, the 

operation has given her a new lease of life. 

I can’t praise the vets enough for the job they have 

done, nor can Jill and I and Protecting Pre-Loved 

Border Collies adequately thank all our wonderful 

anonymous donors who have shown such heartwarming 

generosity, and such appreciation of these 

beautiful dogs. 

In July this year the horrible lump rapidly grew even 

bigger and began to cause Jill a lot of discomfort. 

She couldn’t bear to put her foot to the ground. So, 

of course, we went to the vet. He said there was 

no possibility of removing the very invasive lump. 

After careful consideration, and a second opinion, 

he recommended that the leg should be amputated. 

With my heart in my mouth, I agreed. At an operation 

performed on August 4th the leg – and a lump 

weighing 3kg – were removed. 

This meant I was now calling upon Protecting Pre- 

Loved Border Collies to cover two thousand pounds’ 

worth of surgery. It is a small charity run entirely 

by volunteers. I was worried that having to expend

The Kia Niro range is 

available with electric, 

plug-in hybrid or selfcharging 

hybrid car. Purely 

electric cars have a long 

way to go to be a truly 

attractive proposition. This 

is because the batteries 

are not advanced enough 

yet to hold enough charge 

to drive long distances at a 

decent speed. 

This is where a hybrid is 

attractive, giving the motorist the 

best of both worlds. An electric 

motor and a petrol engine. The 

aim is to use the electric mode 

as much as possible and to have 

the engine as a back up to get to a 

charging station. 

There are two types of hybrid: 

self-charging and plug in. 

Driving in electric vehicle (EV) 

mode allows us to travel 30 

miles when it is 91 per cent 

charged. A bit disappointing as 

I was hoping technology had 

advanced to allow a far greater 

range by now. This makes it 

attractive for doing the school 

run and other short trips. And 

relying on that battery for 

such journeys will allow the 

fuel to remain in the tank for 

a considerable time. A full 

tank of fuel should cover 500 

miles. Interestingly, the battery 

charge doesn’t go below 8 

per cent and when on a long 

journey it seems to recharge 

slightly to 12 or 13 per cent. 

The petrol engine uses the 

Atkinson cycle combustion 

process to make greater use 

of energy. Invented by James 

Atkinson at the dawn of the 

motoring age (he first filed for 

patents in the mid-1880s) it 

is now proving to be an ideal 

solution for emissions-reducing 

hybrid cars. It works on the 

principle of completing all 

four stages of the combustion 

process (intake, compression, 

ignition and exhaust) on just 

one rotation of the crankshaft, 

rather than the two required 

in the more common Otto 

cycle engine. At the same 

time the compression ratio is 

reduced and the intake stroke is 

shorter than the power stroke, 

therefore requiring less fuel to 

turn the engine over.

appealing than a completely 

electric car because it can be

driven like a normal car at a 

normal speed and all the mod 

cons like listening to the radio 

and having warm feet can be 

taken for granted. Not so in a 

completely electric car because 

the radio, windows etc all 

deplete the battery charge and 

certainly in the Nissan Leaf the 

driver and passengers have to 

put up with cold feet due to no 

heating down there.

Late bloomers 

Autumn is the time some 

of us cut back and tidy up 

our gardens ready for the 

winter. But the autumn 

garden can be full of 

colour as some plants 

are just beginning their 

show. Here’s some of my 

favourite late bloomers. 

Chrysanthemums are well 

known house plants but there 

are lots of lessor known types 

that thrive in the garden and 

are safe to leave out over 

winter. 

is totally perennial and hardy 

in well-drained soils. It gets 

tall (4-5ft / 120-150cm) but 

doesn’t need staking. There 

are two varieties to look out 

for – the unnamed pale lemon 

one and “Hanneys Lemon 

Drop” that is sunshine yellow 

with pale yellow tips to the 

petals. These are spreading 

plants so give them some 

room and dig them up in 

spring annually to keep them 

in check. The flowers are very 

fragrant and loved by bees 

and butterflies. 

Helianthus, perennial 

sunflowers, are some of the 

best late bloomers adding a 

splash of sunshine colour and 

perhaps more surprisingly 

a whiff of chocolate scent 

to the autumn garden. The 

variety “Bitter Chocolate” 

is just starting to flower at 

the end of September, and 

they exude the unmistakable 

scent of drinking chocolate 

on a warm, sunny day. For 

more flower power, but alas 

no scent, try the well-loved 

“Lemon Queen”, the large 

flowered “Happy Days” or the 

“Dixter Orange” is a short, 

bushy plant that is absolutely 

smothered with bright orange 

double flowers from mid- 

August and into October it still 

puts on a brilliant show. “Clara 

Curtis” is more subdued, with 

pale pink single flowers. 

Hardy Chrysanthemums 

can be left in the ground all 

year but should be lifted and 

divided in spring every two 

years. Give them a sunny spot 

in well-drained soil and they’ll 

give you a wonderful autumn 

display every year. 

Another flower just coming 

into its own is Bidens aurea. 

Not at all like the tender 

Bidens we use in hanging 

baskets this is more like the 

annual flowered Cosmos but 

Japanese Anemones have 

also been looking good in late 

summer and will continue 

to flower into the autumn. 

Mostly their flowers come in 

various shades of pink or pure 

white, each with a bold yellow 

knob at the centre. We grow 

“Honorine Jobert” (white) and 

“September Charm” (pink). 

They can take quite a while to 

get established in the garden, 

sometimes a few years, but 

once they get their roots 

down there’s no stopping 

them! In fact, make sure you 

are certain of the position 

when you plant them as the 

deep roots of an established 

plant will keep on coming 

through for a long time after a 

plant has been moved.

These are just a few of the 

late bloomers on display in 

our garden through autumn 

so I don’t rush to put the 

garden to bed for the winter 

too soon.

FEAR OF RAIN 

Horror movies that focus on mental illnesses 

have drastically increased in recent years, with 

such films now needing more of a unique 

spin than ever in order to not be seen as a 

cut-out-copy. 

Fear of Rain, while passable and entertaining 

enough, unfortunately does little to stand out 

from the crowd. Schizophrenic young girl, Rain 

Burroughs, has a traumatic vision of seeing a 

child kidnapped by her neighbour. This leads 

her on a downward spiral as she struggles to 

keep herself from imploding with intrusive 

thoughts and false alarming images, with 

people around her making her doubt herself 

as to whether the crime she saw was merely 

another side-effect of her mental illness. 

A journey down the usual high-school-outcast, 

awkward romance and Grimm-Brothers-esque 

tropes ensues. The director, Castille Landon, 

puts a decent-enough effort into making the 

story a roller-coaster ride, but perhaps the 

kind you have ridden at the same theme park 

for the past ten years. Its charm has worn out, 

and any scares or attempts Fear of Rain makes 

to try and strike you with panic as to which 

characters may be real or not now feel more 

like a parody of the horror formula than an 

addition to it. 

While performances remain consistent, with 

a strong lead from Madison Iseman, the 

abundance of cliched narratives make this 

movie another diluted drop in the ocean 

rather than a step forward.

THE SUICIDE SQUAD 

The Suicide Squad feels less like a sequel to 

the film that came out in 2016, and more like a 

soft reboot. A complete course correction that 

fixes all the mess that was made with that film. 

I think just the fact that James Gunn was hired 

to pen and helm this film was a good sign from 

the beginning. 

You can tell that he’s learned from his previously 

successful experiences on the ‘Guardians of 

the Galaxy’ films and mixes it with his younger, 

grind-house aesthetic. Filled with schlocky 

gore, crass characters and over the top action 

sequences much like his earlier works such as 

‘Slither’ or ‘Super’, whilst still finding room to be 

introspective, heartfelt and empathetic towards 

its characters. 

It gets to the core of each one of the villains in 

the film, turning them from a D-grade comic book 

character into someone you truly care about over 

the space of two hours. This is because James 

Gunn’s heart went into this project, and you 

can feel his personality seep through in every 

small detail, making the film incredibly enticing, 

allowing you to empathise with each small choice. 

Every small line of dialogue feels important, as it 

adds to the overall themes of the film as well as 

moving the story forward in a way that’s thrilling 

and entertaining. This is one of the best comic 

book movies ever made.

Preparing for winter 

months and festivities 

The darker days are creeping in and this might mean 

that the good habits you’ve built over the summer may 

change coming into the autumn and winter months. 

As you begin to create different habits based around 

daylight saving and the colder weather, you might find 

yourself struggling to create positive momentum and 

maintain motivation. 

There are a few simple steps you can take to help you 

move forward in a positive and healthy way: 

1. Organise nutrition in advance 

Bulk cooking those heartier winter meals or using a 

slow cooker for time efficiency will keep you on track 

with your nutrition. We’ve included one of our favourite 

slow cooker recipes in this article, which is packed with 

veggies to keep you warm and full this winter. 

2. Prioritise workouts in a way 

that you enjoy 

If it’s too dark to get out for a run or you just can’t pull 

yourself out of bed to get to the gym on those cold 

mornings, move your workout schedule around to suit. Go 

for a lunchtime walk, or do a home workout, you’ll soon 

warm up! I’ve added a simple 30-minute, equipment-free 

home workout in this article for those frosty mornings. 

3. You can still enjoy Christmas 

It really doesn’t have to be about over indulging, selfsabotaging 

and undoing all of your hard work. If you 

set up a good routine now, you can enjoy the Christmas 

month without guilt or undoing your hard work. 

4. Balance and lifestyle is key 

What we do has to be sustainable for long term goals. 

Short term goals and fad dieting will land you in a 

sabotaging cycle of getting results and then losing them 

again. A lot of time, effort and misery. 

Establishing a long-term beneficial approach with 

nutrition; a fitness programme which is going to work 

around your lifestyle; and establishing a routine which 

means that social events can be enjoyed guilt free, will 

enable you to enter the festive season in the right, healthy 

frame of mind.

After many Covid related delays, we finally got 

underway. Now, with all our players vaccinated, 

things have become more relaxed. 

After starting the season with 30 players, numbers 

tailed off. But thanks to our dedicated hard core of 

members we have fulfilled our fixtures lists. 

Our AGM is in November and plans to hold our 

dinner and presentation night in early December are 

underway. 

As the nights draw in, some of us head for the 

Nottingham Indoor Bowls Club for the winter league 

and the prospect of seeing the English Indoor Bowls 

Championships there in October. 

We are always on the lookout for new members so

As I write, we are a few weeks past Freedom Day and 

the easing of many restrictions which have dominated 

life over the past eighteen months or so. 

Employers are now able to dictate that staff should 

return to their places of work as WFH is no longer 

the requirement. However, research has shown that 

almost 75% of workers would like the flexibility of 

remote working to continue in some format. Many are 

anxious about the return to work and if employers aren’t 

sensitive to this shift then it could adversely affect staff 

engagement, wellbeing, recruitment and retention. 

Worryingly nearly a quarter of SME owners responding 

to a survey revealed that they would not be consulting 

with their employees on their return to the workplace 

policies. 

I have advocated in my articles many times for better 

mental health support for staff. Coronaphobia* has 

taken many different forms during the pandemic 

therefore any steps to relieve anxiety in people returning 

to work must be a big consideration. Even smaller 

companies with limited resources can access free 

guidance online with helping employees cope with 

changes. MIND the mental health charity has a number 

of free Wellness Action Plans. 

As life becomes busier again it’s imperative that 

communication is maintained in order to make the 

transition back to normality easier. Speak to your line 

manager about your fears and concerns and if you are 

a business owner LISTEN. When the pressure is on to 

increase revenue after the pandemic has eased it would 

be business suicide not to listen to the workers who are 

needed to reach those targets.

causing COVID-19, leading to accompanied excessive

Nottinghamshire Police leading the way as crime 

plummets 

The overall fall in crime recorded in 

Nottinghamshire was way ahead of 

the national average and only bettered 

by the City of London Police – which 

covers just a square mile of the 

capital. 

New national statistics, recently 

released, show robberies, burglaries, 

knife crime and other serious offences 

all plummeted, marking a sustained 

drop which started well before the 

impact of the pandemic.

policing teams and more officers helped 

the force to record an overall annual fall 

in crime of 21% – comfortably ahead of 

the national average of 14%.

coming weeks and months.

The new figures, released by the Office 

for National Statistics, show 22,239 

fewer offences were recorded in the 12 

months to April 2021. 

Burglaries fell by 34%, robberies by 36% 

and theft offences by 33% and serious 

sexual offences saw a significant 

reduction too. 

Offences of violence with injury fell by 

25% and knife crime by 15%, as officers 

continued with a raft of proactive 

initiatives in pursuing those who cause 

communities most harm and preventing 

offences. 

The force’s own figures for the same 

period showed trafficking in controlled 

drugs saw an 11% increase, a credible 

and much welcomed result based upon 

sustained targeting of dealers and an
