Ambulance 

services 

merge 

to boost 

coverage

AMBULANCE services in 

Ellesmere, Rolleston and Darfield 

have merged in a bid to give better 

coverage to the district. 

These three areas have combined 

to create the St John Selwyn area 

committee, which consists of 

about 50 people, some of whom are 

volunteers and some paid staff. 

The merge will mean St John 

staff based in Rolleston will now be 

available to attend calls in Leeston, 

Darfield and other parts of Selwyn 

and Canterbury when volunteers 

from these areas are unavailable. 

Ambulances previously had to 

travel from Christchurch to attend 

calls in these areas when this happened. 

Said chairwoman of the area 

committee Ann Shepherd: “Rolleston 

can cover Leeston and Darfield 

if we don’t have any volunteers 

working that day. 

“You’re going to get a far better 

service and far better outcome.” 

The area committee will also be 

available for calls from Prebbleton 

all the way through to Waimakariri, 

Rakaia and Arthur’s Pass.

turning down a resource consent 

to build a Countdown in the 

Flemington estate on Birchs Rd.

resource consent application 

when it went out for public consultation. 

Forty-seven supported the 

development, twenty-three submissions 

were in opposition and 

two were neutral. 

Flemington developer Shane 

Kennedy, who applied for the 

consent on behalf of Lincoln 

Developments Ltd, said he is 

disappointed it was declined 

because he believes it is the only 

suitable empty site for a new 

supermarket in Lincoln. 

He said it is much needed 

to serve Lincoln’s growing 

population, which is now at 

about 7000, but would not say 

if he will appeal the decision to 

decline it. 

“Of course it was disappointing, 

and very disappointing 

because the area needs another 

supermarket and, unfortunately, 

everyone’s struggling to find a 

location for one,” Kennedy said. 

Said a Countdown spokeswoman: 

“We know there’s a lot 

of support for a Countdown in 

Lincoln so we’re obviously disappointed 

by the decision. 

“We’re currently reviewing 

this to determine next steps and 

are unlikely to comment further 

at this stage while we work 

through this.” 

Kennedy said it is too early to 

know what the site will be used 

for other than a supermarket, 

but it would be suitable for a 

block of about 12 residential 

houses. 

Some Flemington residents 

did not want the supermarket 

because of its close proximity to 

a residential subdivision.

Said Kennedy: “From a noise 

point of view, I don’t think it’s 

any different than any other 

supermarket and I’ve never been 

to a noisy one yet.” 

He said affected residents’ 

concerns were considered 

within the resource consent 

application. 

However, these concerns were 

factors in Caldwell’s decision to 

decline the resource consent. 

The 3063m 2 supermarket was 

proposed to be open from 7am 

and 10pm seven days a week. 

ANIMAL RULES 

The consultation period for the 

public to have their say on a 

draft bylaw outlining the rules 

for having animals (excluding 

dogs) in the district ends on 

November 6. The draft bylaw 

aims to set standards for the 

keeping of animals including 

stock, poultry, bees and cats.

St John tight-lipped 

on Lincoln service 


THERE IS uncertainty over 

when an ambulance will start 

serving the Lincoln area from the 

town’s fire station. 

Selwyn Times revealed in August 

an ambulance will be based 

at the Lincoln Fire Station and is 

likely to be on-call between 10am 

and 10pm. 

But St John will still not say 

when the ambulance service will 

start. 

“I have spoken to our district 

operations manager regarding the 

staging of an ambulance in Lincoln 

and we have nothing to say on 

this at the moment,” said St John 

spokesman Gerard Campbell. 

Lincoln’s chief fire officer 

Jeremy Greenwood said: “I’m 

still waiting on St John to come

a week and a second ambulance 

on a 12-hour day shift from midmorning 

to mid-evening.

Palmer said the reserve will 

be an asset to the community 

and a great gathering space, 

especially when the hall is 

restored. 

“There’s a lot of functions 

over [at] the hall, like ballet, 

where parents drop their kids 

off. They’re going to be able to 

go over there [the reserve] and 

sit down and have a picnic and 

if they’ve got younger kids, 

they can obviously play on the 

playground. 

“It’s just going to a bit of an area 

where people can gather and have 

a yarn, basically,” he said. 

Palmer said some reserve upgrades 

are still to be completed, 

including the installation of a 

paved courtyard area with three 

panels celebrating the history of 

Southbridge. 

These panels will include information 

on the town’s sporting 

icons such as Dan Carter and 

information on where old landmarks 

in the town like churches 

used to be.

Palmer said the memorial will 

have names of soldiers from

upgrades is not yet known but 

will be when the panels and 

war memorial are in place, he

Family photos show Canterbury’s history 

FAMILY SLIDESHOW evenings 

held in a darkened lounge are 

a fond, nostalgic memory for 

Christchurch woman Isabel 

Tweedy. 

Her late father Ian Tweedy was 

a hobby photographer who took 

thousands of slide photographs 

in his lifetime, recording family 

holidays, picnics and tramping 

trips. 

Some of his images from the 

1950s, 60s and 70s have been 

added to Christchurch City 

Libraries’ archives and after Ms 

Tweedy sorted through her dad’s 

collection and realised some 

would have a wider interest and 

historic significance. A selection 

can be seen on the discovery wall 

at Tūranga. 

She has sent 28 slides to the 

libraries’ photo hunt, which is 

being held for the 12th year as 

part of the Christchurch Heritage

“I remember how exciting it 

was when a new box of slides 

arrived,” Ms Tweedy says. 

“Dad would put them all in 

order and we’d get friends around 

to watch them with a break in the 

middle for a cup of tea and some 

baking. The slides are a record of 

our childhood.” 

Her father meticulously 

labelled each slide with dates, 

names and places and kept 

them in wooden cases he made 

himself.

in front of the Royal Yacht

when Queen Elizabeth visited

Others show a horse-drawn 

tram on the Papanui line, the 

Wings and Wheels air show 

at Wigram and Ms Tweedy’s 

sister and a friend pushing a 

lawnmower as children. 

One taken from the Christ 

Church Cathedral spire, looking 

down Colombo St, won a 

commendation in a 2016 photo 

hunt, and one taken in Victoria 

Square at night won the overall 

prize the same year.

this year’s hunt is encounter our 

stories and the goal is to gather 

a wide collection of photographs 

from across the community. 

“These images reveal unique, 

personal stories and they’re a 

great way to bring Canterbury’s 

heritage to life in a way people 

can really relate to. Mr Tweedy’s 

photos are a vivid record of family 

experiences and local history 

going back seven decades.” 

Photo hunt images are 

uploaded to the discovery wall at 

Tūranga Central Library and can 

be seen by visitors keen to learn 

more about the city. 

Ms Tweedy says her father 

would be surprised and quietly 

pleased that his images are being 

shared. 

“We knew that they were well 

worth saving. But he would be 

absolutely astounded to know 

they are now being held as 

historic records. 

“He was a very humble man 

and he didn’t have a lot to say but 

photography was a real interest 

for him. He would be very 

embarrassed but quietly pleased.”

Selwyn is an area rich with natural features and landscapes, from the Canterbury Plains and 

Southern Alps to the Rakaia and Waimakariri rivers and the coastal lagoon of Te Waihora/ 

Lake Ellesmere. It’s important that our natural environment is protected from inappropriate 

land use and development, while at the same time ensuring it continues contributing to 

people’s economic and social wellbeing. 

Key proposed changes – natural environment: 

· A larger area of the district is identified with landscape value that needs 

protection from inappropriate land use and development. 

· The level of management of a protected landscape area will depend on 

its values. For example, some areas are proposed to have restrictions 

on earthworks; others will have restrictions on shelterbelts, vineyards or 

orchards where that would change the naturalness of the area. 

· Introducing indigenous biodiversity areas on the planning map within the 

Proposed ePlan where rules managing indigenous biodiversity apply. 

· Voluntary listing of significant natural areas in the District Plan. 

· For the first time we are identifying the habitat of two indigenous animal 

species (Canterbury mudfish and crested grebe) which will be protected. 

· New rules for managing clearance of indigenous vegetation. 

· Mapping coastal environment areas for the first time where further 

restrictions on various activities are being introduced. 

· Introducing specific rules that manage sky glow across the district, 

such as a district-wide rule that lighting is to be directed downward and 

shielded from above.

ROLLESTON TOY Library may 

soon be homeless after being 

open for less than a year. 

New Zealand’s newest toy 

library has been based at Storage 

King on Izone Drive, Rolleston 

since former owners Chris and 

Ayyam O’Brien offered free use 

of three storage units and one of 

their delivery trucks. 

It is New Zealand’s only solely 

online click and collect toy 

library and it opened in January. 

It has grown significantly and 

now more than 60 families use 

it. 

The library initially operated 

its toy pick-up and drop-off 

sessions from the Rolleston 

Community Centre car park 

but winter weather and an 

expanding membership 

meant that this soon became 

impractical. 

Chris and Ayyam offered the 

use of their office for Sunday toy 

pick-up and drop-off sessions. 

The new Rolleston Storage 

King owners are unable to 

support the arrangement, and 

toy library volunteers have had 

to temporarily suspend their 

service while they search for an 

alternative solution. 

Said toy library publicity and 

promotions officer Michelle Sim: 

“We are incredibly grateful to 

Chris and Ayyam for helping us 

get off the ground. 

“However, we now have more 

than 60 members, with more 

wishing to join, and we’re very 

conscious about ensuring we can 

deliver reliable service for them. 

We’re pulling out all stops to try 

to find a new home,” she said. 

This is proving to be an uphill 

battle due to strict district 

council regulations and the fact 

that the non-profit group have 

limited funds, as it is still in its 

first year of operation.

“Obviously we are doing our 

best to raise funds to help meet

a garage, shed, office or small 

warehouse to house their toys

Rolleston Drive 

under way 

FOOTPATH AND road 

changes around a new 

Rolleston intersection are 

now under way. 

Work will be taking place 

on the shoulder of Rolleston 

Drive and Norman Kirk Drive, 

where the intersection is, for the 

remainder of the year. 

As part of this, there will be 

layout changes to footpaths and 

roads around Rolleston Drive, 

Norman Kirk Drive and Dryden 

Ave. 

Work took place on footpath 

on the western side of Rolleston 

Drive last week. 

Norman Kirk Drive is 

scheduled to be closed in the 

first week of November on the 

corner south of Selwyn Health 

Hub. The district council 

recommends entering Norman 

Kirk Drive via Kidman St. 

This project will require speed 

restrictions or closing one lane 

of Rolleston Drive. 

There will be onsite signage 

advising of any major changes 

coming up and this will also be 

available by calling the district 

council, or on its Facebook page

Impact of 

pandemic on 

businesses 

discussed 

THE DISTRICT council’s first 

Selwyn business breakfast was 

held earlier this month to support 

businesses and help them keep 

operating through Covid-19 

uncertainty. 

More than 60 people from businesses 

across the district attended 

the Rolleston event to network and 

hear from guest speakers. 

Economist Benje Patterson 

discussed results of the first Selwyn 

business survey, a quarterly survey 

organised by the district council. 

The survey showed that conditions 

have been tough but Selwyn businesses 

reported better operating conditions 

than the rest of New Zealand. 

Many guests spoke about the benefits 

of meeting with other businesses to 

know they were facing similar challenges 

and opportunities. 

Said Rolleston hair dressing salon 

owner Margaret Craw: “It’s a great 

thing to do to get everyone together 

and realise you’re not out there on 

your own. I’ve picked up quite a lot 

of information on how things are 

for everyone.”

All teams who took part 

in the challenge were given 

the same task – to develop a 

strategy and implementation 

plan for a Florida-based fruit 

and vegetable distributor that 

had been affected by Covid-19 

lockdowns. 

They then submitted 10min 

videos, outlining their strategic 

recommendations, and a panel 

of judges evaluated the presentations. 

With only three weeks to 

develop their solution, the 

Lincoln team made the recommendation

safety all stem from the New 

Zealand Transport Agency‘s 

original design of how to move 

Lincoln traffic onto the new 

motorway. 

In the original plan, Lincoln 

traffic was to use Hamptons Rd 

as a path of least resistance onto 

Shands Rd with no access to the 

motorway through Prebbleton, 

only via the Shands Rd on-ramp, 

hence no on-ramp to the motorway 

off Halswell Junction Rd. 

I was told this by an NZTA 

representative at an information 

evening for the proposed motorway. 

So now the motorway is 

open there are serious deficiencies 

in design and operation of 

the whole roading network in 

and around Prebbleton clearly 

driven by the growth in the area.

Moth controls ragwort 

A SLENDER moth that forms 

a T shape when resting is the 

hoary plume moth known by 

entomologists as platyptilia 

isodactylus. 

With a wingspan of 19-29mm 

this moth is pale fawn to brown 

in colour with pointed wing tips. 

Known also as the ragwort 

plume moth, this species is native 

to central and southern Europe, 

Mediterranean, North Africa and 

was introduced to Australia as a 

biocontrol agent of ragwort. 

The larvae of the moth feed on 

groundsels or senecio species. 

The plume moth species has 

two generations, with moths 

active in spring and autumn. 

Females have a life expectancy 

of roughly 12 days and can lay 

about 100 eggs in that time. 

Young larvae feed on leaves 

initially before tunnelling into 

the plant stem, while older larvae 

also feed on crown and roots.

Faces of Selwyn returns 

with fresh stories 

Teacher, artist, gardener, farmer, Kaumātua, storyteller – Denise Sheat has many strings to her bow. 

“That’s why I am 83,” she laughs. “I’ve done a few ten years around the place.” 

Denise’s story is part of the second Faces of Selwyn exhibition. A dozen fresh stories celebrating 

the district’s diversity are on display at the Council offices in Rolleston this week and will then be 

displayed in the Selwyn Libraries. 

Denise moved to husband John’s Dunsandel family farm in 1962 and after having two children, 

she taught tamariki at Dunsandel and then Burnham Primary School. 

The multicultural roll at Burnham School had strong significance to Denise, whose bicultural 

background includes descent from a Ngāi Tahu chiefly line. She began to participate at Selwyn’s 

Ngāti Moki Marae at Taumutu and became fluent in Te Reo Māori. 

“I found it quite hard to learn, but it’s a beautiful language and lovely to sing. Teaching the children 

the songs in schools was pure heaven.” 

Denise then became a resource teacher of Māori in Selwyn for the Ministry of Education. 

“I went to all of the schools in Selwyn to tell them stories and I usually went singing in the car all 

the way too. I was so happy to drive to Darfield or Springfield,” she recalls. 

She went on to lecture in Māori at Christchurch’s College of Education, became Taumutu’s 

Kaikaranga – the ceremonial caller, and later Taumutu’s kaumātua - a respected elder of the 

marae, and turned Dunsandel’s old church into a craft shop. 

In 2010, Denise moved to Rolleston, serving on the establishment boards of Clearview and West 

Rolleston primary schools. In 2015, she became an officer of New Zealand’s Order of Merit for her 

work in education and for Māori. 

Denise now works as a kaumātua, paints, gardens and meets the rangatahi and tamariki in her 

neighbourhood. She only hopes she hasn’t left it too late to write a book for her whānau about her 

life adventures. 

Draft Bylaw for Keeping of Animals, Poultry and 

Bees consultation closing soon 

There’s still time to have your say on proposed rules for keeping animals, poultry and bees in our 

urban areas. 

As Selwyn’s population grows, especially in our townships, so does the number of pets and animals we 

have. Which is why the Council has developed a draft bylaw on the keeping of animals, poultry and bees. 

The draft bylaw will help manage issues to do with the keeping of animals (excluding dogs), poultry and 

bees, in urban areas of Selwyn. 

Submissions are open until 5pm Friday 6 November.

The Proposed District 

Plan – looking after our 

natural environment 

On a farm near Southbridge, two streams and some careful tending 

are helping bring back some of the region’s natural heritage. 

The Inwood Farm is home to one of 71 Significant Natural Areas 

(SNAs) in Selwyn, where landowners and the Council work to 

protect and restore native biodiversity. In the case of Alison and 

Stuart Inwood this corridor of cabbage trees, flax, carex, ferns and 

other native vegetation along the banks of The Hei Hei and the Lee 

River which run through their farm. 

The couple first began protecting the area in 2016 when they saw 

the opportunity for riparian plantings of locally sourced native 

species. The Council began supporting them through its Selwyn 

Natural Environment Fund in 2018 when an ecological survey 

showed the huge value of the area. 

The plants provide food for native birds and insects, and protect 

and raise the water quality of the streams, providing a habitat for 

fish and other wildlife. It is hoped their care could encourage more 

native birds back to the Canterbury Plains. 

The Council helps protect our natural environment both by working 

with landowners such as the Inwoods and by setting rules to 

protect it from inappropriate land use and development through 

the District Plan. 

The Proposed District Plan, out for public consultation now, makes 

a number of changes to how the natural environment is protected. 

It identifies indigenous biodiversity areas, applying new rules for the 

clearance of indigenous vegetation and to protect the habitats of 

the crested grebe and Canterbury mudfish. 

Listing of sites like the Inwood’s as SNAs in the Proposed Plan is 

voluntary. The Council works collaboratively with landowners to 

try and achieve long-term protection of SNAs and other areas of 

indigenous biodiversity. 

The Proposed Plan also adds new rules to identify and protect 

our coastal environment, including the margins of Te Waihora/ 

Lake Ellesmere and adjusts the rules around areas identified as 

Outstanding Natural Landscapes or Visual Amenity Landscapes.

Community Park construction 

begins in West Melton 

Work has started on the new West Melton Community Park. 

The Community Park located next to the West Melton Community 

and Recreation Centre will feature a new playground, skate park, 

sheltered barbecue area, half-court basketball court, exercise 

equipment, pathways and plantings. 

The skate park, which is expected to be open by Christmas, will 

include a scooter friendly track area, a bowl and ramps. 

The remainder of the construction is expected to be completed 

early next year. The Community Park is part of the master plan for 

West Melton Reserve.

On the Roads 

Station Street, Leeston, is closed at the intersection with Leeston Road for work on the 

Leeston Stormwater Bypass. This closure is due to be in place until 11 November. A detour 

will be in place along Leeston Road and Cunningham Street. Expect an increase of trucks 

Broadlands Drive between Goulds Road and Springston Rolleston Road will be closed between 

4–10pm on Saturday 31 October for the Rolleston Fireworks. The postponement day for the fireworks is 

1 November. 

Traffic management will be in place on Norman Kirk Drive this week. From Monday 2 November to 

Monday 9 November Norman Kirk Drive will be closed from south of the Council main entrance to south 

of the bend of Norman Kirk Drive. Access to the Council building and park and ride facilities will be 

maintained from Kidman Street.

A celebration walk marked the end of 10 days of SWELL events and activities drawing hundreds of 

older Selwyn residents. 

The walk through Lincoln’s walking tracks and reserves with a talk from a Council biodiversity officer 

marked the end of 79 different workshops, talks and activities for this year’s SWELL, aimed at helping 

older residents live well. 

Particularly popular events included the Have a Go Days from over 25 clubs. Fitness activities such as 

sit and be fit, Tai Chi and aqua aerobics classes also drew attention, with new members signing up for 

long-term classes. 

In particular, the Zumba Gold class was such a hit with participants, it prompted the Council to organise 

its first weekly class to be held on Fridays at the Lincoln Event Centre. 

Senior District Sports and Recreation Programme Coordinator Linda Miratana says the class focuses on 

balance, range of motion and coordination. 

“It is super fun and great for both body and mind. The instructor describes it as 45 mins of low intensity 

dance fun, rather than feeling like a physical workout.”

Rolleston Transport Improvements Project 

community update 

Where are we at? 

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is working closely with Selwyn District Council and KiwiRail, to 

develop an integrated transport plan for the Rolleston and Burnham area. The long-term (30 year) 

programme of improvements will be implemented in stages. 

The plan centres on travel improvement options between Burnham and the State Highway 1 Weedons 

Road Interchange and is designed to improve safety and access for residents, businesses and freight. 

The project was allocated $60M funding by the Government earlier this year as part of the New Zealand 

Upgrade Programme (NZUP), a range of transport projects to get our cities and regions moving, save 

lives and boost productivity. 

These include: 

A SH1 flyover – with pedestrian and cycle access 

Safety improvements to SH1 intersections – between Rolleston Drive north and and Walkers Road/ 

Dunns Crossing Road. 

The improvements will assist local growth and the wider economic prosperity of the region. 

Construction is expected to begin in 2022 and continue through to 2025.

What is the long-term plan? 

The Rolleston Transport Improvements Project is near the end of the ‘Programme Business Case’ 

phase. This is where the planners, transport engineers and other technical staff assess extensive work 

done to date and develop a mix of alternatives and options, with input from transport partners and key 

stakeholder groups. Work planned in surrounding and connected areas is also factored in. While some 

of the detail is still to be worked through, like funding and timing, the long-term programme (30-years) 

maps Rolleston and Burnham’s future transport needs and helps us plan and prioritise. 

The plan is to: 

Increase safety – reduce transport related deaths and serious injuries (particularly at state highway 

intersections) and provide safer facilities for pedestrians and cyclists 

Improve liveability and connectivity – increase access to economic and social opportunities and have 

more transport choices available locally 

Improve transport network reliability and more sustainable journeys – make improvements to 

support lower carbon travel options for people moving around and through Rolleston and Burnham, the 

Rolleston Industrial Area and for rail freight on the Main South Line. 

The programme includes a number of intersection improvements, a local service lane running parallel to 

SH1, level crossing upgrades and greater provision for pedestrians, cyclists and buses – for example: a 

new park and ride facility. 

Once the Rolleston Transport Improvements Programme Business Case is endorsed by Waka Kotahi, 

the programme will be refined by further investigation and input from the community. We will provide 

updates as the project progresses.

Make some marvellous muffins 

A QUICK AND tasty snack, 

muffins are popular with just 

about everyone and these sweet, 

moist date and bran muffins have 

the advantage of being high in 

fibre as well as delicious. 

The date mixture has to be cool 

before you add it so make it in 

advance. You can speed up the 

cooling time by placing the pot of 

hot dates in a sink of cold water. 

And, of course we all know 

that, when it comes to muffins, 

the less mixing of the batter that 

you can get away with, the better. 

Bran and Date Muffins 

Ingredients 

1 cup dates 

¾ cup boiling water 

½ cup brown sugar 

1¼ cup plain flour 

1 cup bran flakes 

½ cup brown sugar 

½ tsp salt 

2 tsp baking powder 

1 egg 

1/3 cup melted butter 

1 cup milk 

Directions 

Begin by making the date mixture. 

Rinse the dates well to get 

rid of any dust or dirt and chop 

finely. Place them, along with the 

boiling water and the first measure 

of brown sugar into a small 

saucepan. 

Bring to the boil and simmer 

for about 10min. Give them the 

odd stir so that they don’t stick to 

the bottom. They should be nice 

and thick by then. Leave to cool 

before adding to the rest of the 

ingredients. 

Preheat your oven to 200 deg 

C. 

In a large mixing bowl, mix 

together the flour, bran, salt, baking 

powder and second measure 

of brown sugar. 

Lightly beat the egg and add to 

the milk and melted butter. Into 

this, stir the cooled, cooked dates. 

Add the wet ingredients to the 

dry mixture and stir until only 

just combined. The mixture will 

be quite wet. 

Line a 12-hole muffin pan with 

paper cups and spoon in the 

muffin mix. Cook for 15-20min 

or until the muffins are just firm 

when lightly pressed. 

Feta and Tomato Muffins 

Ingredients 

2 cups plain flour 

3 tsp baking powder 

¼ tsp salt 

2 eggs 

1/3 cup butter 

1 cup milk 

1 cup grated tasty cheese 

4-5 dried tomatoes in oil 

100g feta cheese 

a small handful of parsley or 

basil leaves 

Directions

next time. 

Line a 12-hole muffin pan with 

paper cases and preheat your 

oven to 190 deg C. 

Place the flour, baking powder 

and salt into a large bowl. 

Add the grated cheese and mix 

through so that it is well dispersed. 

Melt the butter and mix it with 

the lightly beaten eggs and milk. 

Break the feta into smallish 

pieces and gently stir it through 

the egg mix along with the finely 

chopped tomatoes, basil or parsley. 

Add this wet mix to the dry 

ingredients and stir lightly so that 

it is only just mixed through. 

Spoon into the muffin cups and 

bake for 10-15min. 

There are a number of 

variations that work well with 

this recipe. You can add a little 

chopped ham, salami or cooked 

bacon if you wish or cut out the 

feta and add your own favourite 

cheese. 

Cheese and Onion 

Muffins 

Just leave out the feta and 

tomatoes from the previous 

recipe and replace them with 

a couple of finely sliced onions 

that have been cooked in the 

microwave or a pan, with a little 

butter until very soft. The onion 

becomes lovely and sweet and 

makes the muffins moist as well. 

Add about half a cup extra of 

grated cheese.

Mercedes SUV can be sporty or tame 

THERE’S BEEN a lot of debate in 

the Star Media newsroom lately as 

to what constitutes a four-wheeldrive 

vehicle. 

When reporting, there’s a general 

belief that anything that sits high 

and looks like an enlarged station 

wagon is a 4WD. 

Of course, that’s not the case, 

many of today’s tall wagons just 

have drive to front or rear wheels 

only, and they fall into the category 

of sport utility vehicles. To complicate 

the matter many SUVs do have 

four-wheel-drive. 

One car which squarely fits into 

the SUV and 4WD categories, 

and adds a luxury element as well, 

is Mercedes-Benz’s GLA 250, an 

entirely new model that has just 

landed in New Zealand. 

The GLA has been a steady seller 

for the brand, and the newcomer 

will easily pick-up where its predecessor 

left off. 

At just over 4.4m the GLA is 

firstly a compact SUV, but one 

that is versatile and capable as an 

all round family vehicle, and one 

which can be sporty or tame all in 

the one package. 

The GLA lands here in four variants 

depending on power outputs, 

all engines have four-cylinders. The 

200 (2WD) has a 1.3-litre unit, the 

250, AMG 35 and AMG 45 S have 

the same basic 2-litre engine with 

varying power outputs depending 

on how much turbo boost 

you require as a driver and, as I’ve 

alluded to, those three models get 

Mercedes Benz’s 4Matic all-corner 

drive system. 

The GLA 250 lists at $86,500; 

others in the range start at $73,300 

and end at $126,400 for the full 

noise 45 S. 

In recent years I’ve evaluated several 

Mercedes-Benz vehicles with 

the low power 2-litre turbocharged 

engine, and have never been disappointed. 

The GLA 250 sits with that 

well, it is capable and competent, 

it’s just that it doesn’t have the massive 

injection of power that comes 

with its AMG stablemates. 

Interior features are extensive 

and too numerous to mention 

but I must make mention of the 

large centre screen display which 

flows across the dash panel, much 

like the size of two iPads joined 

together horizontally. Most of the 

in-cabin features can be controlled 

through it, but if you would prefer 

to make adjustments through voice 

command, a simple ‘hey Mercedes’ 

will prompt a reply, and you can 

talk to the vehicle instructing it 

through a multitude of commands. 

Up front sits a 1991cc, twincamshaft, 

engine which is rated 

with 165kW and 350Nm of torque. 

On the subject of figures, it also

fares quite well with fuel usage, 

Mercedes-Benz claiming a 7.5-litre 

per 100km combined cycle average. 

During my testing time the 

trip computer was constantly 

listing around 8.5l/100km which 

wasn’t that far distant along with a 

5l/100km instantaneous reading at 

100km/h (engine speed 1500rpm). 

The GLA 250 drives through an 

eight-speed dual clutch automatic 

transmission. The low and close 

proximity of ratios allow for a solid, 

unbroken flow of power. When the 

pressure is on, the GLA 250 will 

launch to 100km/h from a standstill 

in 6.7sec and easily complete 

an 80km/h to 120km/h overtaking 

manoeuvre in 5sec. These 

are quick times and will satisfy 

the performance driver, when the 

turbo is boosting strongly the feel 

of power is dynamic, inviting spirited 

motoring. 

I took the test car through the 

gentle undulating twists and turns 

of the inland scenic route of the 

Selwyn district, returning home 

through Dunsandel and Lincoln. 

The balance and feel of grip is quite 

phenomenal through some of those 

tight corners heading towards 

Ellesmere. Even though the 4Matic 

system only comes into play when 

grip at the front is marginal, there 

is a feeling through the driveline of 

control and balance. 

Fitted to the GLA 250 are high 

profile Continental tyres (235/50 

x 19in), and because of their tall 

structure they absorb a lot of road 

nuances, imparting high levels of 

in-cabin comfort. They are also

can imagine it would be a great car 

to tackle the winter skifield access 

road or, as we come into summer, 

the perfect vehicle to travel to the 

peninsula batch. 

It is also a good example of why 

the word utility is part of the SUV 

acronym.

Look after your mower 

WITH THE mowing season 

upon us, it’s time to make sure 

your lawn mower is as ready as 

you are to tackle those lawn care 

chores. 

A regular, simple maintenance 

programme to keep your mower 

performing at its best and to 

extend its useful life. Just follow 

this easy checklist: 

•Change the oil 

Oil is the engine’s lifeblood that 

removes contaminants, lubricates 

parts and dissipates heat. 

That’s why it’s important to make 

sure the crankcase contains an 

adequate supply of fresh oil. 

Before changing the oil, run the 

engine for several minutes until it 

warms up. Then, stop the engine, 

disconnect the spark plug and 

drain the oil into a pan or similar 

container. Refill the crankcase 

with high quality detergent oil 

that has a SG/CD classification 

on the label. Take the used oil 

to a local recycling centre. It’s 

environmentally unfriendly and 

illegal to dump used motor oil 

on the ground or into a storm 

drain. 

•Check the air filter 

Your air-cooled engine needs 

a constant supply of clean air. 

If your mower engine takes a 

disposable paper filter, simply 

replace it with a new filter. If the 

engine requires a foam-type filter, 

remove the sponge from the filter 

assembly, soak it in kerosene and 

squeeze it dry. Then apply a few 

drops of clean oil into the sponge 

and place it back in the filter assembly. 

CARE: To have a well-groomed lawn your mower will need 

constant maintenance. 

•Use fresh fuel 

Petrol turns stale after about 60 

days and can form gum in your 

engine’s carburettor, resulting in 

expensive repairs. Eliminate the 

problem by routinely filling your 

engine’s tank with fresh fuel. If 

petrol must remain in the tank 

for a prolonged period of time, 

add a fuel stabiliser to keep it 

fresh and to ensure a clean fuel 

system that leads to easier starting. 

•Sharpen the blade 

Think about what a dull razor 

does to your face or legs when 

shaving. Similarly, a dull mower 

blade can bruise, bend and damage 

your lawn, making it susceptible 

to disease. After disconnecting 

the spark plug, examine the 

blade for wear or damage. Have it 

professionally sharpened at least 

once annually. 

•Keep things clean 

While you’re checking the 

blade, remove any dirt and 

caked-on grass under the mower. 

Squirt vegetable oil cooking 

spray underneath to reduce 

clipping build-up and to prevent 

rust. 

HEIGHT: A raised garden made out of timber is easy to 

maintain. 

Tips to simplify

WITH THE warmer weather 

comes the awareness that 

Christmas is really not that far 

away. 

Unfortunately, most of us wait 

until the last minute to work on 

our gardens, just before the big 

day arrives. 

Often we find the task either 

too big or too difficult, hence 

a lot of us leave it incomplete 

or even worse, don’t start at all. 

Well, here are some simple tips 

to improve your outdoor living 

areas. 

1: If your garden is too much 

to handle then simplify it. Look 

at what plants you have. Your 

likes and dislikes. Too big or 

too small? Leaf droppers or 

sun blockers? The list goes on. 

Ascertain what has to go and 

get rid of them. You may be surprised 

at how simple things make 

a big difference. 

2: Remember, often less is best. 

At this stage you may need to 

seek some professional advice 

to help keep in mind the picture 

you want to create. 

3: If your garden and plant 

maintenance is high and you’re 

finding it hard to cope, then weed 

out the problem. For example, 

it just maybe time to realise that 

the roses are no longer suitable. 

Remember you can always substitute 

them with an alternative 

plant. 

4: Consider building raised 

gardens with timber or garden 

sleepers. Besides adding a point 

of interest, you have the added 

benefits of a well drained garden 

that is easier to maintain. You

Stagger planting for continuous cropping 

OCTOBER IS sometimes 

unsettled, but by the end of the 

month, temperatures have usually 

risen and the growth in the 

garden abounds. 

There are a million tasks to do 

in the garden; all enjoyable, especially 

the planting of the summer 

vegetable garden. 

It’s probably the most active 

month of the year in the vegetable 

garden. Prepare the area 

well by adding in new compost in 

significant quantities. 

All summer vegetables can 

now be safely planted, including 

courgettes/zucchini, cucumbers, 

beans, beetroot, carrots, celery, 

corn, leeks, lettuce, melons, 

onions, radish, pumpkin and 

tomato. 

To avoid vegetables all maturing 

at one time, stagger your 

plantings as continuous cropping 

and supply is much preferable. 

As plants become established, 

apply light side dressings of 

vegetable fertiliser to help 

develop strong healthy plants. 

Water young plants regularly and 

deeply to encourage a strong root 

system. 

The last of winter flowing 

annuals can now be removed 

and the soil prepared for new 

plantings. As with the vegetable 

plot, add plenty of compost to 

the soil and dig it over well to 

create a fine tilth (breadcrumb 

like texture) ready for planting. 

Summer flowering annuals can 

include alyssum, asters, cornflowers, 

californian poppy, cosmos, 

livingstone daisy, lobelia, marigolds, 

nemesia, petunias, portulaca, 

phlox, salvias, sweet peas 

and zinnias. 

In warmer areas, harvest seminole 

tangelo (which will finally be 

ripening) and grapefruit. The first 

application of fruit tree fertiliser 

can now be made. Repeat again 

in six weeks’ time. 

Loquarts are now ripening, filling 

a gap in the harvesting 

fruit calendar. Kiwifruit and 

grape vines are now growing 

vigorously. 

Trim growth where it is not 

required. Mulch trees with 

crushed bark as the soil warms up 

to prevent weed growth and aid 

water retention during the hot, 

dry summer months. 

Check your strawberries 

for any signs of grey mould 

(botrytis). Remove any infected 

leaves and ensure there is enough 

pea straw, mulch or hay around 

plants to keep developing berries

It’s a busy time for lawn lovers. 

The first application of lawn fertiliser 

can now be made; hopefully 

at the same time as spring rain, 

otherwise water it thoroughly 

after applying. 

Sow seed where there are 

bare parts of the lawn, add new 

topsoil before broadcasting the 

seed and lightly water to activate 

germination. Mow your lawn 

regularly to encourage vigorous 

growth. 

Classical winter flowering 

shrubs such as rhododendrons, 

camellias and azaleas are now 

coming to the end of flowering. 

They may require some minor 

pruning before they break into 

spring growth. Apply fertiliser to 

these plants now and apply mulch 

all around your shrubs. 

Now is a great time to plant 

containers and pots with summer 

flowering annuals such as 

petunias which are a favourite 

to provide colour throughout 

summer months. Start your new 

seasons display by removing 

existing potting mix, thoroughly 

cleaning the container before 

refilling with new container mix 

and planting. 

In the herb garden, remove any 

old plants from the previous season 

herb garden. Plant out new 

seasons herbs, including those 

that are frost tender such as basil. 

Clip your herb plants frequently 

for culinary use and to encourage 

fresh young growth.

There is still time to pop some fertiliser on the lawn, just make sure you 

water it in well as soon as you have applied it. This task needs to be done 

in the evening so that the sun doesn’t burn your lawn once the fertiliser is 

applied, and then pop the sprinkler on to give it a good soak. Water your 

lawns early in the morning and later in the evening, not in the heat of the 

day. Where possible, water for an hour or more to give it a good soak 

rather than a quick watering. A handy tip is to set a water timer and you can

Family fun day in November 

Make sure you pencil in the November 

22 to visit the popular Selwyn Motor 

Fest at HelPet Park on Rolleston Road, 

opposite Rolleston College. Last year’s 

event attracted more than 500 vehicle 

entries from car enthusiasts throughout 

Canterbury and beyond, and raised 

over $20,000 for local charities – but the 

focus is also on a fun family day out and 

includes bouncy castles, face painting, 

mini jeep rides, raffles and stalls. 

“We are hoping to go bigger than ever. 

Covid has shut down a lot of events this year 

and we plan to give Selwyn locals and the 

wider Canterbury community a good show 

and a great day out,” says Tracey Campbell, 

chair of this year’s organizing committee. 

Instead of hiring a live band, the 

organisers are getting the community 

involved. They are collaborating with 

the Selwyn high schools to showcase top 

local talent for a variety of entertainment 

throughout the day. 

The Selwyn Motor Fest will run from 

10am to 3pm. Tickets cost $5 for 

individuals or just $10 for the whole family. 

For vehicle enthusiasts, it costs $15 to preregister 

your vehicle for the show. 

“There is no restriction on the type 

of vehicle. It doesn’t have to be a certain 

vintage or make. It could be a car, 

bike, truck, van or caravan… if you’re 

enthusiastic about your vehicle, bring it 

along,” says Tracey. 

The Selwyn Motor Fest has run annually 

since 2017 and over the previous three years 

raised more than $60,000 for local Selwynbased 

charities and non-profit organizations. 

“A lot of organizations are doing it tough 

this year. Donations are the first budget 

item to be cut when jobs are uncertain. We 

hope to be able to give back to the local 

community and play a part in keeping these 

organisations going,” says Tracey. 

The committee is grateful to their 

sponsors for supporting the event, and 

making it possible to give back to the 

community, both through entertainment at 

the event and through fundraising. 

“McLenaghan Contracting is our

PROPOSED PLAN CHANGE 5 

PACKAGE OF CHANGES 

Christchurch City Council has initiated Plan Change 5 to the District Plan. 

The proposed Plan Change 

Proposed Plan Change 5 is a group of plan changes which seeks to: 

• Reinforce direction that offices and shops are to be primarily located in the 

Central City and commercial centres as well as clarifying the role of these 

centres as commercial focal points (5A). 

• Clarify and better reflect the intent and outcomes sought in the Commercial 

chapter, including the role of centres and the types and scale of retail, offices 

and other activities that are anticipated in centres amongst other changes 

including definitions (5B). 

• Clarify what is sought and/or required in the Industrial chapter, including 

clearer direction for the redevelopment of former industrial land for residential 

and mixed uses that support good neighbourhood design amongst other 

changes including definitions (5C). 

• Make sure that home-based businesses are of a type and scale appropriate in 

residential and rural areas through various changes including to definitions 

(5D). 

• Simplify a rule for noise insulation near railways and roads (5E). 

• Changes to zoning and overlays on the planning maps for identified sites, 

including to reflect what is already happening or anticipated, zone new roads 

and open spaces for their intended purpose, as well as realigning the zone 

boundaries between Christchurch and our neighbouring Districts, amongst 

other changes (5F). 

• Make changes arising from the implementation of new national direction that 

requires removal of car parking requirements. This includes consequential 

changes arising such as a landscaping rule for car parking areas, which is based 

on the number of car parks required (5G). 

• Provide for antenna associated with telecommunications at an appropriate 

scale (5H). 

• Enable temporary signs associated with general and local government 

elections (candidate and party) and referendum (5I).

Resource Management Act (RMA)) and supporting information can be viewed

Anyone may make a submission on this Plan Change. Written and electronic

Schedule 1 of the RMA. A Council hearing will then be held to consider all 

submissions, and decisions will be made following this hearing. Anyone who 

has made a submission has the right to appeal the decision to the Environment 

Court. 

The rules proposed in this Plan Change will have no legal effect until the 

Council gives public notice of its decision on the Plan Change and matters 

raised in submissions, or the Environment Court makes an order which grants 

any rule immediate effect (RMA, s86B).

Painting your 

home to sell? 

When you’re getting ready to sell your 

home, you’ll probably want to pretty 

things up to make it more appealing to 

buyers. Always ask the advice of your 

real estate agent first (it may not be 

necessary and you’ll save yourself time 

and money) but if you do choose to head 

to your local paint store, it’s good to have 

a plan before jumping into high gear. 

Stick with neutrals 

Neutral doesn’t just mean white (and 

all the shades of it). It’s possible to use 

colour and keep your tones neutral. Walk 

into your local paint shop and you’ll see 

a whole wall of whites, creams, greys and 

other neutral tones that will help create 

the look of a blank canvas for your buyer.

help buyers envisage adding their own 

touch once they’ve moved in.” And 

remember, you’re not doing it to win a 

design competition. Keep your focus on 

giving the property a fresh, new feel and

Focus on the main areas 

Unless your property is in a dire state, 

there’s no need to panic over getting a 

lick of paint on every wall. Focus on 

the main areas of the house—kitchen, 

lounge, bathrooms—where buyers are 

likely to spend more time. What’s equally 

important is using the correct paint. 

For example, use the wrong paint in the 

bathroom and it could end up blistering 

or peeling because of moisture or lack 

of ventilation. And don’t forget the front

Before you hit the brushes, imagine 

coming to view the property yourself. 

What would you be looking for? Borrow 

a high-pressure hose to get rid of any 

loose paint or moss that’s taken up 

residence. And while you’re at it, Felicity

remove weeds and then hose down paths 

and your exterior walls—you’ll freshen
