1. The crate needs to be big enough for your dog to lie down, 

stand up and turn around in, with access to food and water. 

2. Let your dog have a look around the crate at this stage. 

Do not approach or attempt to close the crate door even if 

your dog seems happy inside the crate. 

3. Start to give every meal in the crate but do not close the 

crate door at this stage. 

4. If during the day your dog goes into the crate always 

reward them with a treat. 

5. Place food in interactive feeders such as a Kong into the 

crate to encourage your dog to stay in the crate between 

mealtimes. 

6. Once your dog is settling in the crate start to close the 

door. As soon as they finish eating open the crate door 

again. 

7. Gradually leave the crate door closed for longer after 

your dog has eaten meals/treats or a stuffed Kong. Start by 

leaving for one minute and slowly increase the time. 

8. When your dog is happy in the crate for 5 minutes with 

the door closed, start to walk away from the crate into 

another room and then come back and open the crate door. 

9. Slowly increase the time you are away from your dog by a 

minute at a time. Once your dog is happy waiting for you to 

return after a few minutes we can move onto the last stage 

in create training. 

10. Before you leave your dog in the crate overnight or to go 

to work, you need to get them used to triggers. These are 

things like closing doors, turning lights off, putting coats on 

and picking up keys. Practice doing these things whilst your 

dog is in the crate for a few days before doing it for real.

I have been to The Larwood and Voce on many occasions 

and was therefore looking forward to going following the 

relaxing of the lockdown measures at the beginning of July. 

U 

pon arrival I was greeted by Emma 

the assistant manager (donning 

her face shield) who upon entering 

took my temperature, which whilst 

may feel strange initially, but these are 

indeed strange times and therefore upon 

reflection does give the re-assurance 

that the management have taken the 

necessary steps to ensure not only the 

customers, but the staff’s safety seriously. 

We were asked if we would like a table in 

the bar or restaurant or a table outside 

on the external decking, Due to the 

understandable nervousness of some 

people, they have also set aside some of 

the car park and added additional seating. 

Emma, showed us to our table and asked 

us what we would like to drink, this was 

our first difficult choice, as with its sister 

pub The Wollaton, they offer an extensive 

range of gins and cocktails and therefore 

I decided to go for a Warner’s rhubarb 

gin and tonic. My colleagues, went for 

a mocktail and the other a more simple 

sparkling water. 

For those not familiar with The Larwood 

and Voce, it sits under one of the stands 

of the Trent Bridge cricket ground, and 

therefore is a great place to visit if you are 

going to watch any of the cricket or indeed 

going to watch Nottingham Forest play, 

however, in the case of the latter only home 

fans are allowed in. It was at this point that 

Emma pointed out that they had installed 

a web based ordering system from their 

home page, this allowed customers to 

order and pay direct from their table for 

both food and drink to take away the need 

to go inside and therefore limit the 

number of the people circulating in the 

pub. Simply create your account, enter 

your table number, and order and pay 

and the drinks or food will be bought 

straight to your table, this is for both 

inside and outside which is a brilliant 

way to put at ease those that are 

nervous about going out. 

Onto the more important stuff, food. We 

were served by Matt, the front of house 

manager. Matt ran through the menus 

including the daily specials. I went for 

goats cheese & heritage tomato salad, 

pumpkin seeds, green sauce, croutons 

(£6) and my colleague went for the chicken 

and ham hock terrine with chicory, pear, 

hazelnut and blue cheese (£7), both were 

generous portions delightfully presented 

with amazing tasting goats cheese, with 

the freshest of tomatoes. 

For mains, I went for the buttermilk fried 

chicken fillet burger, hot sauce, bacon 

mayo, Monterey Jack, pickle, chips & slaw 

(£13.50), which again was delightful, my 

colleague decided to go for the salmon 

escalope, fennel, coriander & parmesan 

crust, new potatoes, sprouting broccoli 

& hollandaise (£15). The chicken burger 

was incredible moist chicken coated in 

a crisp breadcrumb served in a brioche 

bun with just the right amount of heat. 

The salmon escalope was again cooked to 

perfection accompanied by a lovely crust 

with delightful vegetables on the side. 

For dessert, although probably not 

required, I went for the vanilla panna 

cotta, served with Starkey’s raspberries & 

honeycomb (£6) and my colleague went 

for the Southwell strawberry pavlova & 

Chantilly cream (£6) both delicious. Mine 

was perfectly set with the freshest of fruit 

served on the side. My colleague’s pavlova 

again looked amazing, perfectly cooked 

meringue covered in the strawberries 

with a generous dollop of cream on the 

side. Congratulations to Nikki, the Head 

Chef/General Manager. 

In summary I couldn’t fault The Larwood 

and Voce either on the steps taken in 

these unusual times or indeed the food.

Lovely Leftovers 

For me, leftovers are almost better than the 

original meal. Foraging through the fridge to feed 

my family is a challenge that I rise to on a regular 

basis. 

There is nothing more satisfying that managing 

to feed four of us for three days on the trot from 

one roast. After a chicken dinner we might have 

a warm potato salad with chicken and chorizo 

then I will boil the carcass and make a stock for 

a risotto. I also pull all the meat off the boiled up 

bones and the cats and dogs get a special treat. 

Nothing is wasted. 

A good fridge forager will always keep a few tins 

and jars in the cupboard for padding out their 

creations. I always have pesto, tinned tomatoes, 

beans, pulses and cheese ready to go. 

For soft fruit that has gone a bit too soft, I bung 

it in the blender with some milk, Greek yoghurt, 

a splash of maple syrup and whiz it up for a 

breakfast smoothie or I chuck it in a cake. 

Egg fried rice is easy and a great way to use 

your leftover rice. Heat a bit of oil or butter in 

a non-stick frying pan, add the rice and give it a 

good stir, add some Chinese five spice, chopped 

spring onions and then push it over to one side 

– in the space add a couple of beaten eggs and 

scramble them then mix through the rice. I could 

eat this all day, everyday. 

The three recipes opposite were all made in a 

week using whatever I had in the fridge. They are 

all adaptable and hopefully will inspire you to give 

your leftovers a lift!

Ratatouille Risotto 

I love the Bosh! vegan cook book and 

this is where the inspiration for this recipe 

came from. Quantities of veg can be 

changed according to what you have. 

2 x medium aubergines - cubed 

1 x red pepper – chunky slices 

1 x courgette - cubed 

3 tbsp olive oil 

2 tsp dried oregano 

1 x onion – finely chopped 

2 x garlic cloves – finely chopped 

250g risotto rice 

1 ltr chicken or veg stock 

25ml white wine 

1 tbsp tomato puree 

1 tbsp green pesto 

Parmesan and fresh basil to serve 

Method 

Heat oven 200°C. Put the aubergine, 

pepper and courgette in a baking tray, 

toss with 2 tbsp olive oil, oregano and 

salt and pepper. Roast for about 40 

mins until soft. Toss half way through. 

Meanwhile in a large pan heat the rest 

of the olive oil and gently fry the onion 

for 10 mins or until soft. Add the garlic 

for the last 2 mins. Add the rice to the 

pan, mix well, add the tomato puree and 

mix again then pour the wine in and boil 

until it’s evaporated. Add the stock a bit 

at a time, stirring until it’s absorbed and 

the rice is cooked. For extra flavour I 

chuck in the end of a block of parmesan 

(remember to remove before serving). 

Add the cooked veg and stir in the pesto. 

Serve topped with grated parmesan and 

fresh basil.This would also be delicious 

topped with crumbled feta cheese. 

Top tip: save the hard ends from your 

parmesan and add to soups and risotto’s 

for extra flavour. 

Spaghetti Omelette 

I always cook way too much pasta. 

With pasta shapes it’s easy to make a 

pasta salad. With spaghetti or linguine 

this is my absolute favourite recipe. 

It’s delicious sliced up cold the next day 

as well. Leftover leftovers!! 


Cold spaghetti – chopped up 

6 x large eggs 

Milk – just a splash 

2 handfuls grated cheese 

Sundried tomatoes or cherry toms 

2 tbsp pesto sauce 

Chorizo sausage – sliced (optional) 

Fresh basil and 

sliced tomatoes (optional) 

Method 

In a large bowl mix the spaghetti with the 

pesto, half the cheese and the tomatoes. 

If using chorizo, cook in a non-stick frying 

pan (don’t add oil if using chorizo as it 

creates enough oil). If not using chorizo, 

heat the oil in the pan. Add the spaghetti 

mix and spread evenly in the pan. Mix 

the eggs in a jug, add a splash of milk. 

Pour the eggs in the pan and distribute 

evenly. Cook on a low heat until almost 

set, then sprinkle the rest of the cheese 

on top. You could top with tomatoes if 

you have any and I put torn fresh basil 

on top as well. Finish off under the grill 

until the eggs are set and the cheese is 

golden brown and bubbling. 

Messy Mushroom 

Melt with Crispy 

Potatoes 

This was designed to use up some slow 

cooked BBQ brisket we had left over. 

It would be equally delicious with any 

pulled meat or for veggies, double up the 

mushrooms. 

1 x bag new potatoes 


1 pack portabello mushrooms – stalks 

removed 

Blue cheese – or any other 

melting cheese 

Burger buns (optional) 

1 x red onion – thickly sliced 

Leftover BBQ brisket (about 500g) 

Method 

Get the oven on 200°C. Put the spuds 

in a large pan of salted water and boil 

until they are soft. Then drain and put in a 

roasting tin. Crush gently with the back of 

a spoon. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle 

with salt. Roast in the oven for about 

30mins until the edges are going crispy. 

Meanwhile in a smaller roasting pan put 

the red onion and mushroom stalks – toss 

with a little olive oil. Rest the mushrooms 

on the top, stalk side up. Season and put 

in the oven. You want the onions soft and 

the mushrooms almost cooked. After 15 

mins remove and add the cheese into the 

mushroom tops. Then back in the oven 

for 5 mins until the cheese is melted. 

The meat can be heated in the oven 

at the same time. To serve, butter your 

cobs, pile on the pulled meat, top with 

a cheesy mushroom (or two), put the 

crispy spuds on the side and prepare to 

get messy!

Vacation or 

Staycation? 

So far, 2020 has been a year 

where we are all getting familiar 

with new ways of living and home 

workouts have been a saving 

grace for many of us. 

With the pandemic restricting our 

movements, many of us will be planning 

a “staycation” this year. Whether that 

means relaxing in the comfort of your 

own home or going away somewhere 

in the UK for a break, you may want to 

continue working out. Here are a few 

things to consider… 

Calories burned are calories burned. 

If you feel your usual home workout 

routine is a little too much while away, 

track the calories you burn. Try to 

keep your TDEE (total daily energy 

expenditure) as close to your usual by 

being active, walking wherever you can 

and not sitting for prolonged periods. 

This will help you maintain your current 

weight. 

If you are feeling a little more energetic 

here is a circuit you could do anywhere, 

using only your body weight. 

Performed at a challenging intensity, you 

should clock up 300-500 calories by 

performing the exercises below. 

EMOM = every minute on the minute. 

Total time 20 minutes. If you stop before 

the minute is up then rest (this is your 

rest time) until the next minute begins. 

Repeat these 5 

exercises for 4 rounds: 

• Squat 

• Alternating rear lunge 

• Ab crunch 

• Push up (from knees if needed) 

• High knees on the spot 

If you really want to step this up, add a 

weighted backpack to exercises you feel 

you are capable of pushing a little harder. 

On top of this, all you would need is a 

30 minute walk and you’ll hit your daily 

calories burn goal of around 300-500 

calories. If you combine this with your 

dietary calorie deficit you will still be 

progressing. 

Remember, to create a healthy weight 

loss you should be in a total deficit daily 

of around 300-500 calories and anything 

from 0.5lb’s to 2lb’s per week weight loss 

is a sustainable way of producing a longlasting 

result.

gedling leisure re-opens 


Carlton Forum, Redhill, Calverton and Arnold 

Leisure Centres have been welcoming people 

back through their doors since Gedling Borough 

Council reopened them in July. 

All centres were deep cleaned during closure. 

We’ve introduced new safety measures including 

spreading out gym equipment, introducing safety 

signage and adding extra cleaning sessions. 

Cleaning stations in all areas include hand sanitisers 

and all equipment is cleaned between sessions. 

Classes, gym and pool sessions must be prebooked, 

as we limit the number of people in the 

centres to enable social distancing. You will need a 

Gedling Leisure Card (free to order until end October) 

or membership (now with NO contracts, so even 

more flexible), in order to book. 

Customers have been leaving some great 

comments after their visits including Ceri; ‘I’ve been 

to a spin and a kettlebell class and it was great to be 

back. Fantastic classes and a lovely staff greeting. I 

felt safe and the centre seemed very organised’. 

Graham, aged 74, is a regular at Carlton Forum 

and Redhill Leisure Centres. He is enjoying seeing 

familiar faces again and said; ‘The gym system 

works great and I’m enjoying the same classes and 

gym equipment as I did before Covid. There has 

obviously been a lot of work and thought gone into 

the reopening of the centres’.

We visited Go Ape back in very different circumstances but 

gladly they are up and running again with extra hygiene 

and safety measures in place to make it enjoyable for all. 

When we went the staff approached us with smiling faces, 

talked us through a safety briefing and then strapped us 

into our harnesses and we had to practice the clipping and 

swapping procedures. 

All of us were placed on the Treetop Challenge (£35) – what 

fun that was!! This section is aimed at adults and more 

adventurous (10+) children. There are many different tree 

top obstacles but the one that stood out for us was swinging 

across into a cargo net after a huge drop. This adventure 

lasted approx. 2-3 hours. 

Go Ape is suitable for all ages. The Treetop Adventure 

plus (£25) is aimed at adventurous 6+ children and adults, 

they have a Treetop Adventure (£20) that is suitable 

for both the mad and modest individual over 1m tall. 

Nets Adventure (£20) is tree houses, netted walkways

So you have this huge pile of photos, what next? Probably 

the most important thing is to establish your objectives 

with regards to the photo collection 

Being able to access your photographs 

For most people this is the overall requirement. 

Hundreds of photographs in a box won’t get looked at 

from one year to the next, however if the photos are 

scanned (made into digital files) the whole family have a 

chance to access them – even if it is simply to get their 

own copy of prints. 

Distribution 

Hard copy photographs are difficult to share, especially 

if they are the only one left in existence. Once you have a 

digital copy every family member can have a copy. 

Repairing Damaged Prints 

With a decent scan of a damaged or problem image it is 

possible to fix whatever is wrong, even issues that have 

been part of the original print. 

Preserving Originals 

Once scanned, original prints can be safely stored, 

perhaps even indexed. 

A Family History 

Having a collection of accessible images can bring a 

family closer together and increase the interest of newer 

generations in those of the past. The digitised images 

are easy to incorporate into family trees for instance. 

Books and prints 

Digital images can easily be incorporated into photo 

books, and copy prints made 

Lincoln Cathedral, St Mary Magdalene Church in 

Newark, Gunthorpe Lock, and Belvoir Castle are just 

some of the sights visitors will be able to see from 

two new viewing platforms at Gedling Country Park. 

The platforms were officially opened by the Mayor of 

Gedling in July and will offer visitors views as far as 

Lincolnshire and Leicestershire. The platforms will also 

feature interpretation panels displaying information 

about some of the sights. 

Both platforms feature wheelchair and pushchair 

ramps to ensure that they are as accessible to as many 

visitors as possible. 

A new 100 space car park has also been completed 

next to the existing car park at the Spring Lane 

entrance. 

Since opening in 2015, the park has become 

increasingly popular and has around 100,000 visitors 

each year, with that number expected to increase as 

the park continues to evolve and additional facilities, 

such as the viewing platforms, are opened. 

Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John 

Clarke said; 

“I am sure the new viewing platforms will be popular with 

visitors, it is incredible what you can actually see when you 

get there. It is one of the highest points in Nottinghamshire 

and the views really are something special. I’m really 

looking forward to seeing visitors, photographers and 

school groups enjoying the views and learning about the 

area.”

Vicky McClure, Rob.Green and the Scream Queenz 

– along with more than 5,000 viewers across 

Nottinghamshire – celebrated Pride from the 

comfort of their own homes. 

On Saturday, 25 July, Nottinghamshire Pride went 

online for the first time in its history as a result of the 

coronavirus pandemic. The show, which was hosted 

on Nottinghamshire Pride’s website and social media 

channels, saw performers and local activists come 

together in support of the region’s vibrant LGBTQ+ 

community. 

The show included performances from local artists 

such as Concrete Rose, Harlee Rosanna, Kitty Tray, 

Miss Bowie, Tash Bird and Titty, as well as a speech 

from activist Maryam Dim and a poetry recital by 

Ravelle-Sade. 

Councillor Rebecca Langton, portfolio holder for 

communities at Nottingham City Council, added: 

“While it looked a bit different than usual this 

weekend, it is nonetheless important and has given us 

an opportunity to come together online to celebrate 

the LGBTQ+ community in the city. The performances 

showcased Nottingham’s talent, energy and diversity 

– and I’ve loved watching them.”

Despite ongoing social restrictions, local friendly 

society Nottingham Oddfellows has revealed big 

plans for its annual Friendship Month celebrations. 

The group, based in Nottingham is a non-profit 

membership organisation which holds regular social 

events in the Nottingham area. 

Friendship Month, held in September, is an annual 

celebration designed to encourage anyone interested 

in meeting new people locally to give one of their 

special no-obligation social events a try. 

On Saturday 5 September, meeting at 10.30hrs at 

the Visitor Centre, the group’s hosting a Friendship 

Walk around Attenborough Nature Reserve. Non 

members are most welcome and all attendees will 

receive a goody bag! 

Although the group pressed pause on its regular 

schedule of face-to-face meetings, it has been a 

busy year for its local teams. During the Covid-19 

lockdown, staff and volunteers regularly checked in 

on its 342 members, many who are shielding or live 

on their own. 

Karen Pye-Smith, Social Organiser of the Nottingham 

Branch of Oddfellows said: “Friendship Month is 

our annual celebration of all things friendship, and 

this year is no different. We’re still here to welcome 

old friends, and new. That’s why we’re encouraging 

people to take part in one of our events and see what 

we offer.”

As we tentatively return to going out 

and about, more and more venues 

are doing their best to work around 

social distancing and maintain a 

safe environment for us to enjoy 

ourselves and support the City we 

know and love. It's not been easy for 

many businesses, especially local 

independents, so make sure you pay 

them a visit if you can. 

Although many restrictions are still in 

place and of course uncertainty over 

the feasibility of events taking place, 

I have put together my pick of what's 

on over September and October. I 

still would recommend checking the 

websites or ringing ahead to ensure 

an event is still taking place before 

making a journey. 

As we enter Autumn, one of the big 

events on the Nottingham calendar is 

the Goose Fair, although the intention 

is to go ahead, at the time of going to 

press no announcements have been 

made (30 Sept – 4 Oct). Organisers, 

we believe, have until six weeks 

before the event to confirm. This 

will be the same case for the Winter 

Wonderland later in the year. 

Other events scheduled for later this 

year that are still up in the air are the 

Nottingham Robin Hood Beer and 

Cider Festival. This has now been 

put back to November (proposed 

dates 18-21 November) with tickets 

hopefully going on sale in October.

I have written previously about 

mental health in the workplace 

and how to recognise and support 

colleagues who may be struggling 

but now it is more important than 

ever. A recent study discovered that 

67% of companies expect working from home to be 

permanent or long lasting. 

The benefits of doing so have been well documented 

during the pandemic but we must also recognise that 

it leads many to a dark place. The Zero Suicide Alliance 

reported that over half a million people had accessed 

their online course in a three week period at the 

beginning of lockdown. 

Working from home does create a bit of a bubble so it’s 

vital to reach out to others and to humanise everyday 

contact. Employers must invest more than ever before 

in meeting their employee’s mental health needs. 

• Understand what they are going through and the 

factors affecting their well-being 

• Guide them towards the appropriate counselling or 

therapy where necessary 

• Be flexible in terms of working hours and environment 

– coronaphobia is a reality for many 

• Use personal development as a tool to increase 

confidence and a healthier mindset 

• Supporting lone homeworkers and checking in on 

them regularly to make sure they are okay

Crocosmia are better known 

as montbretia and have 

often have a bad name as 

invasive plants. However, 

there are lots of choice 

varieties that are less 

spreading and worthier of 

their other common name: 

falling stars, after their 

cascades of brilliant, fiery, 

starry flowers. 

These plants come from Africa and 

can be dug up in late autumn and 

laid out to dry so that the corms 

could be stored indoors in winter if 

your soil is waterlogged in winter. 

I leave the corms in the soil as my 

garden isn’t very wet or cold. 

The plants like a moisture retentive 

soil in summer and this will give 

bigger and more flowers. 

By choosing different varieties you 

can have flowers from July to early 

October and plants from 1ft / 

30cm to 4ft / 120cm tall. 

Perhaps the most popular, tallest 

and earliest to flower is the orange 

red “Lucifer” with his pleated 

leaves and long cascades of 

flowers. He starts flowering in July 

through to the end of August. 

Lucifer is wonderful for adding 

a touch of hot colour to a more 

subdued planting. In our garden 

we have him amongst regal lilies, 

rusty foxgloves and giant oats. 

“Hellfire” is a newer version of 

this old favourite and is a little 

shorter and later to flower and has 

luscious, deep, velvety red flowers. 

Medium in height is the curiously 

coloured “Culzean Pink” – not a 

true pink but with a definite pinkish 

glow to the warm orange flowers. 

There are also short varieties 

for the front of the border like 

the pinkish orange “Limpopo”, 

deep yellow “Honey Angels” and 

“Solfatare” (which also has bronze 

leaves). These grow to about 1ft / 

30cm and their bold colours are 

the highlight lining my paths and 

patio in August and September. 

For a softer effect, there are 

some lovely pale lemon flowered 

varieties. All are very alike: 

you might find “Citronella”, 

“Sulpherea” or “Morning Light”, 

there’s not much to choose 

between them. These are 1ft 6in / 

45cm tall and flower in late August 

perhaps through to early October. 

I plant crocosmia corms in spring 

about 3-5in / 7-12cm deep and 

about 6in / 15cm apart although 

it isn’t crucial to be exact in this. 

Potted plants can be planted in spring 

or summer. 

These bright plants are easy to grow 

and invaluable for brightening up the 

garden in late summer. Keep an eye 

out for crocosmia at plant fairs in late 

summer and catch a falling star for your 

garden.

Two modern appliances that we take for 

granted today would have been a huge asset to 

the early Victorian housewife, helping to make 

her day a little easier. 

The initial purpose of these two inventions was 

not to help with domestic chores, but the local 

industry for which Nottingham is famous, that 

of lace manufacture. 

Starting in Nottingham about 1825, the local 

lace manufacturing firm of James Fisher and 

Company appears to have moved to Short Hill 

from London. 

By 1830 they had moved to George Street in 

Radford (now Moorgate Street) and were called 

Fisher Robinson. It was taken over by William 

Hurst and Sons in 1910. 

During the 1840s John Fisher, son of the original 

owner, was living in Mapperley Place, one of 

the earliest streets in Mapperley. John was 

working for his father’s company in Radford. 

He was always looking at ways to improve the 

lace manufacturing process. On 7th December 

1844 aged just 19, he came up with an idea for 

a machine to stitch lace which he patented in 

1845. This was in effect a sewing machine, as it 

had all the essential parts and mechanism of a 

modern machine. 

Sadly, John was not given the recognition for 

this invention. Two Americans, Edward Howe 

and Singer both filed patents in the same year 

but after Fisher. The British patents by Fisher 

were filed in the three British Patent Offices 

at Manchester, London and Edinburgh. When 

Singers lawyers came to England to check on 

possible patents already filed, they visited the 

Manchester patent office. Unfortunately the 

Fisher patent in the Manchester office had been 

mis-filed and so Fisher had no recognition. If 

they had visited London or Edinburgh instead 

they would have found Fishers documents and 

portable sewing machines would be known as 

Fishers not Singers. 

In 1860, John Fisher was looking for an 

alternative for rubbing fabric when it was 

washed. The hand techniques then in use 

damaged the delicate lace. John came up with 

a machine that had a drum which was filled 

with soapy water. A series of pipes blew hot 

air through the water, soap and fabric and dirt 

was blown out by the action of the machine. 

This cleaned the delicate fabric without the 

rubbing techniques of hand washing. Although 

somewhat different in its action to the modern 

drum based machines, it was the first machine 

designed for the process. 

The reporter from the Nottingham Post was 

invited for a demonstration in June 1860. It was 

described by him as consisting of a rectangular 

tub some 2’ by 1’.5” standing on 4 legs with a 

bucket underneath to catch the waste water. 

A pair of bellows were attached to one end of 

the box. These bellow were activated by a cam 

mechanism and were attached to 6 small pipes 

which fed the air through the bottom of the box 

and upwards through the water and clothes. 

The selling price was given as £5 10s. 

So, early Mapperley is the home of both the 

washing machine and the sewing machine, all 

thanks to Nottingham’s lace industry and John 

Fisher.

Over the last few months we have all had to adjust 

to different ways of going about our business. Some 

have been more challenging than others. I thought 

I would share a few of my ‘first time back’s’ with you. 

First time shopping in a mask 

Face coverings are now mandatory in shops. There 

are some interesting interpretations out there, from 

toilet roll to World War 2 gas masks, I’ve seen it 

all. The chin wearers are my pet hate. Got to say, 

as someone who wears glasses and also being 

a woman of a certain age - it’s the perfect storm. 

Within a minute of hooking it on, I am a sweating, 

steamed up mess, charging blindly around the shop 

like I’m on Supermarket Sweep. I have discovered 

there’s also an art to mask removal. After my 

glasses went flying across the car park for the 

fourth time, it’s safe to say I have yet to master this 

procedure. Hats off to all the key workers who wear 

these things day in day out. 

First time back in the pub 

No matter how cold your fridge is and how beautiful 

your back garden looks, nothing can beat the 

taste of an ice-cold beer in a pub garden. Having a 

pub crawl from room to room just doesn’t cut the 

mustard and who were we kidding that a virtual pub 

night via zoom was good fun?? I was a bit nervous – 

more about getting told off for not following correct 

protocol than catching coronavirus – but I needn’t 

have worried. The pubs have got it sussed and a 

relaxing pint was had by all. In fact, it was so much 

fun we stayed for a few… 

First time back in the cinema 

Businesses across the board are having to adapt 

and innovate and our local cinema, the Bonington 

has really stepped up to the plate. Tiered seating 

has been replaced with sofa’s, armchairs and little 

tables. It really was very comfy, so much so that 

Gary actually nodded off. All we needed to complete 

the experience were a couple of footstools. Not that

I’m demanding or anything...Mind you I doubt if we 

would have left at all then. 

First time back in a restaurant 

The Banyan Tree has been a favourite of the ng 

girls for years. Gary’s birthday seemed like a good 

enough reason to go. There were enough people 

to create a great atmosphere and if it wasn’t for 

the masked staff and the new table condiment of 

hand sanitiser you really wouldn’t have known any 

difference. The evening was topped off when a 

complimentary plate of desserts, accompanied with 

a firework, was presented to a very embarrassed 

Gary. Feeling obliged to start a Happy Birthday 

singalong we all mumbled into the tablecloth, 

scoffed the pud and departed, full and happy. 

First time back in the gym 

My final first was my return to my beloved Redhill 

gym. After nearly four months away I was dreading 

it. The staff were amazing and there is cleaning 

spray everywhere. In 45 minutes I think I sprayed 

and wiped more than I do in a week at home! It’s 

dead easy, you book a slot or class, turn up and 

follow the instructions and off you go. I was a bit 

trepidatious but once I was gasping for breath on 

the treadmill my nerves vanished. Spinning classes 

have reduced numbers so a saddo like me who 

uses the same bike week in, week out, might have 

to change their routine. The screen that gives you 

all the stats isn’t there (that’s a bonus for me. Once 

I was watching the screen absolutely chuffed at 

my killer score. Top of the group...glancing round 

proudly to make sure everyone else had clocked 

it - when I realised I was looking at the wrong bike. 

On my usual bike was a great hulk of a guy pounding 

away.)

entirely by people who have recovered from their

Before (and after) the current social distancing 

we had around seven weekly meetings in 

Nottinghamshire. There are usually five C.A. 

meetings each week in Nottingham City. Currently 

these “face to face” meetings aren’t operating. 

We host 10 online recovery meetings per week to 

replace them. 

We understand that the current situation can prove 

difficult for individuals wishing to get sober or to 

maintain recovery.

Almost a decade of walking with thousands to help 

beat dementia, actress Vicky McClure now urges her 

hometown to plan their own Memory Walks. 

Alzheimer’s Society is calling on 1,316 people across 

Nottinghamshire – the exact number that attended last 

year’s Memory Walk in Wollaton Park – to take part in a 

very different version of its most popular fundraiser. 

Despite the Coronavirus pandemic bringing large events 

to a halt, the charity is seeking to replicate 2019’s 

success with hundreds of smaller walks. 

For Vicky, Alzheimer’s Society Ambassador, it will be a 

much quieter affair when she completes her own walk in 

memory of her nana. 

She said: “Had the normal Memory Walks taken place this 

year, it would have been my 10th year attending such an 

event in Nottinghamshire. While it saddens me that we 

can’t all get together this year, I’m determined with my 

family to walk my own way and I encourage you to sign 

up too.” 

People with dementia have been worst hit by 

coronavirus, not just in terms of deaths. More than half a 

million people have used Alzheimer’s Society’s support 

services since to start of the pandemic, with many 

calling them a lifeline. 

This is why the charity says it has never been more 

important to raise money, to help reach and support 

those who need it most. Many supporters are expected 

to arrange walks to coincide with World Alzheimer’s 

Day on 20 September. However, walks can take place

council launches 

#honourourheroes 

campaign 


Gedling Borough Council is launching a new 

campaign to create a permanent tribute to our 

NHS, carers and key workers and wants residents 

to submit their ideas. 

The council plans to create a permanent fixture, 

sculpture or installation in a prominent area of the 

borough that will be there to honour the sacrifices 

made in response to the Coronavirus outbreak. 

The council is calling on residents to submit their 

ideas, concepts, drawings and illustrations, which 

will be used as part of the process to select an 

appropriate tribute. Inspiration and themes can be 

based on the symbols and icons of hope that have 

come about from the outbreak such as the rainbow 

symbol, the clapping for the NHS or the colours of the 

Union Flag, red, white and blue but ideas, suggestions 

and concepts for the permanent tribute don’t have to 

include these elements. 

The council will allocate funding to kick start the 

project and will also be working with local groups, 

including local Rotary clubs, to look at ways to raise 

additional funds for the project, which could include 

a potential crowdfunding option once the plans have 

been finalised. 

Deputy Leader of Gedling Borough Council Michael 

Payne said: “We’re calling on residents to come 

forward with ideas that will help shape a long-lasting 

tribute to our NHS, carers and key workers that will be 

placed in a prominent part of the borough.”

for the love of scrubs still 

going strong

When we agreed to be the central hub for 

Nottingham - For The Love Of Scrubs group, little 

did we know we would still be going strong in 

August! 

Four months of making and the requests are still 

coming in. We have hit over 28,000 makes so far, 

these include scrubs, headbands, scrubs caps, 

laundry bags, ear savers and face masks for the 

NHS, community workers, frontline key workers and 

vulnerable groups around Nottinghamshire. 

We have only been able to do this with the hard work 

and commitment of hundreds of volunteers giving 

their time to help with sewing, sharing information to 

their contacts, delivering requested items, running 

local hubs, coordinating distribution, managing 

supplies, admin of the facebook group and all the 

other things needed to ensure the smooth running of 

a group of over 1700 supporters . 

We also wouldn’t have been able to get this far 

without the ongoing support of the managers of the 

Urban Room at 38 Carrington Street. 

With talk of a second wave it looks like things aren’t 

going to slow up any time soon. We are therefore 

putting plans in place so that we can continue to 

operate over the next 6 months, allowing us to 

continue responding to requests for help.

Time flies. It’s a cliche but it appears to be 

pretty true. It feels like only yesterday that we 

became parents and suddenly my oldest is 

about to go to high school. We’ve got used to 

being together as a family unit since April as 

we’ve pretty much followed the COVID advice, 

and now that things have relaxed somewhat 

we’re able to get out much more. Which in turn 

means that our son can escape with his mates. 

The plan this year was to get him increasing 

independence ahead of going to high school 

but the pandemic put an end to all that. He’s 

managed to stay in touch with friends as there 

is infinitely more technology than when I was a 

lad (ie. he’s got Fortnite). But it’s only recently 

that he’s started to be able to physically get 

out and see everyone. And it’s great for us as 

parents, as we get a bit of a break, but also a bit 

scary as he’s off into the wider world. 

Don’t get me wrong, he’s staying pretty local. 

He’s not heading into the inner city and we’ve 

done all the usual checks (such as triangulating 

with other parents to check our kids really are 

hanging out with who they say they are). The 

good news is that as much as we trust our son 

we have the ability to check exactly where he 

is due to his love of his phone. And here’s a 

sneaky trick for all parents, insisting they take 

their phones with them means you can track 

their movements. It’s brilliant, my wife and I 

have basically turned into Big Brother. I can’t 

wait for the day when he tells us he’s at location 

X and we can reveal that we know he’s at 

location Y. That’s the sort of situation I will look 

forward to him trying to explain his way out of 

(“I think there must be something wrong with 

your phone Dad”). Having said that, even at 

his age he’s much more tech-savvy than his 

parents so I’m sure we can’t can’t rely on this 

for long. 

Whenever he gets home he rarely goes into 

detail about what he’s been up to. I think it’s 

mostly a combination of kicking a football, 

talking about Fortnite and playing on park 

equipment. Not really much different from 

when I was a lad. Back in those days we 

kicked a football about, talked about the latest 

Commodore 64 game and hung out on the 

swings. As my mum worked full time we were 

generally encouraged to go and hang out 

with our friends in the summer, either at their 

house or outside somewhere. As I grew up on 

the Isle of Wight this was rarely dangerous. The 

worst we did was spend a few weeks playing 

on a building site completely unaware of the 

dangers. I had an entire summer holiday where 

a friend and I recreated a complete football 

World Cup in Subbuteo (for the record Wales 

beat Brazil 5-2 in the final with an Ian Rush hattrick). 

But we generally hung out on our bikes, 

wasted loads of time and spent our minimal 

amounts of pocket money on sweets and 

computer games. 

And it’s easy to look back on those times as 

golden years as they were our first taste of 

freedom from the family unit which is exactly 

what my son is experiencing now. So while it 

does scare us as parents that we have to let him 

go into the big world (especially after so many 

months of not being out), we know that it’s 

going to help him grow and gain confidence. 

And to be honest, when 

he’s out it means I can 

finally get some practise 

on Fortnite myself!

young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing

Another busy month for the team 

here at Gedling and I’ve a few 

updates to pass on. 

Licensed Premises 

Firstly, a lot of work went into the 

reopening of licensed premises 

across the Gedling Borough. The 

team were supported by police/ 

council licensing colleagues and 

Gedling CCTV to ensure a safe 

reopening. Going forward we will be 

carrying out regular visits to licensed 

premises to ensure that these are 

operated as safely as possible and in 

line with the government guidelines. 

Our approach to the COVID-19 

regulations remains one of Engage, 

Explain and Encourage with any 

enforcement being the last resort. 

Policing Priorities 

In other news the Neighbourhood 

Policing team and Operation Reacher 

have continued to work together 

to address local priorities. Our 

engagement with the public has been 

ongoing using platforms such as 

Facebook or Twitter and I’m pleased 

that we have been able to address 

some of their concerns around drug 

use and supply with a number of 

warrants carried out over the last 

month. Whilst there is still a lot to do 

there have been some great results. 

On 21st July I joined the Gedling 

South team and local councillors 

for a walk around Netherfield. We 

spoke with members of the local 

community about ‘Operation Thistle’ 

which is our response to drug dealing 

in the area and delivered letters to 

residents in order to raise awareness 

of our work and the ‘Crimestoppers’ 

charity. Drug use and dealing will 

remain a priority going forward as I 

know that this has a huge impact on 

the local community.

Operation Reacher 

In other news Operation Reacher 

continues to gather momentum. The 

team have now taken delivery of their 

new vehicle which has been fitted 

with the latest ANPR (automatic 

number plate reading) equipment 

which has been funded through local 

partnerships. In terms of success the 

team have now seized over £37,000 

in suspected criminal money. 

Along with this they have arrested 

or interviewed 56 suspects and 

seized 38 vehicles. On top of that 

17 warrants and 50 drug seizures 

also means that a significant impact 

is being made into criminality in 

Gedling and the surrounding area. 

The team are planning a number 

of socially distanced engagement 

events in the near future and we will 

share details on our social media 

pages once details are confirmed.
