I wanted to provide a short update 

as to our priorities. These remain 

Residential Burglary, Autocrime 

and ASB until at least January 

2020. 

As the nights get darker earlier, 

leave a light on inside your house. 

Remember to choose low energy 

lamps (wherever possible). Use a 

timer switch to operate the lights 

as it starts to get dark. Change 

the times that the lights come on 

to simulate an occupied home. 

Make sure your front door is well 

lit. Use dusk to dawn lighting 

that automatically comes on as 

it gets dark. Make sure you keep 

your doors and windows locked 

at all times. There is also crime 

prevention advice available on the 

Nottinghamshire Police website 

which covers a range of subjects 

and this can be found under: www. 

nottinghamshire.police.uk/advice 

Autocrime has continued its 

downward trend this year with 

a 21% reduction across Gedling 

compared to this time last year. 

That equates to around 99 less 

victims of autocrime. Despite this, 

local officers are continuing to 

carry out proactive work around 

autocrime after a number of vans 

were broken into across Gedling 

during November with tools stolen. 

Despite the challenges of bonfire 

night and halloween, reports 

of anti-social behaviour (ASB) 

continue to be slightly lower 

than this time last year which 

is encouraging. I also recently 

met with colleagues from 

Nottinghamshire County Council 

youth services to look at how we 

can continue to work together in 

order to reduce incidents of ASB 

across Gedling. 

Moving on to road safety, the 

Gedling Neighbourhood team 

have been working alongside 

community volunteers. A 

community road safety operation 

was completed in the Spring Lane 

area of Lambley Village back in 

November following concerns from 

local residents about speeding in 

the area. We are aiming to repeat 

this work over the next few weeks 

and months and we will be visiting 

other locations across the Gedling 

Borough to address the issue of 

road safety. 

Finally I attended the 

Nottinghamshire Police Force 

Awards on 21st November where 

I saw PC 3532 James Gill win the 

Police Officer of the Year Award. 

PC Gill is a response officer based 

at Jubilee House in Arnold. This 

is a fantastic achievement and 

one that I believe is really well 

deserved.

Gedling Southbank FC work hard to raise funds for 

When You Wish Upon a Star. 

As the year long partnership between Gedling 

Southbank FC and When You Wish Upon a Star 

draws to a close – the fundraising events have 

continued thick and fast! 

Charity matches, sponsored walks and rambles, 

12 hour football events, bag packs, fill the bucket 

weekends, celebration party evenings, fashion 

show, raffles, 12 hour tenpin bowling, bubble dashes, 

sponsored training events and laps for Lapland. 

When you put your mind to it the list is endless for 

ideas to raise money for great causes like When 

You Wish Upon a Star and help to put a smile on 

children’s faces.

Ray’s still an inspiration at 86 years young!!

Raymond Topple boasts an impressive 

and inspiring catalogue of talent and 

achievements throughout his life so 

far. At 86 years old he chats about how 

he’s been active his entire life and we 

got to hear the fascinating stories he 

has to tell, including playing 18 years of 

football, achieving a black belt in Judo 

by the time he was 30 and even his 

experience of being the lead singer of a 

10 piece band! 

Ray still volunteers his time to be 

a referee for Judo examinations 

including for the 2012 London Olympics 

and discusses how he stays active 

and what it means to him. Being a 

member of Redhill gym for 14 years 

he appreciates the camaraderie of the 

centre and its staff members with high 

praises for his Pilates trainer Sharon. 

Visiting the gym Monday to Friday 

and even changing his schedule 

to accommodate this, Ray advises 

everybody to get a full night’s sleep, to 

eat well and to exercise every day, even 

just moving around slightly will help you 

stay positive. His piece of advice; “if 

you think you can’t do it, you can, it’s all 

about your mentality”.

2020… looks amazing right. Two round numbers 

together, clean, even looking numbers. There’s 

just something very satisfying about looking at this 

number. 

Its also a GREAT tempo number to train too. Two 

second extension and a two second contraction with 

no pauses… Now you know how to read tempo, 

allow me to go a little deeper as this will be our last 

interaction in 2019. 

As we reach the end of the year, are you still saying; 

I’ll start Monday, I’ll start January??? 

When will it be too late? 10 years down the line will 

you still be saying the same thing? Wishing you’d 

made the start in 2020? 

Everyday we get to choose what we do; we aren’t 

forced to make bad diet choices or choose the sofa 

rather than the gym; we simply make these decisions 

and excuse ourselves of our actions. 

MY 2020 GUIDE 

Don’t do resolutions, please!! 

Instead of a resolution I encourage you to do this 

simple exercise: 

Set three intentions and write out three actions 

needed for each intention and then have this 

everywhere. On your phone, in the cupboard… 

EVERYWHERE. 

Wouldn’t it be great to say the year 2020 was 

when I changed my entire future. That one article 

encouraged me to take action instead of create 

reaction.

I’m sure many of you will have had shiny new 

phones, tablets and other devices for Christmas. 

For me, and I am sure many others from my 

generation, the whole technology thing and the 

social media society that we now appear to live in 

is sailing way over my head. 

I try to keep up. I have a Facebook account but the 

youngsters have moved on...It’s all Instagram and 

Snapchat now. So, determined not to be left behind, 

I set up an Instagram account and was immediately 

blocked by both my kids. Charming. 

Did you know...

We all have local community Facebook pages. 

If you’re not a member, I wholly recommend you 

search for your nearest group and get involved. 

Whether your dog has legged it or your budgie has 

flown the nest, fear not. Post an appeal online. 

Someone will have spotted your furry or feathered 

friend and chances are you will be reunited before 

you can say “here Joey”. 

There was the guy who asked if anyone had lost a 

hamster as he had found one in his back garden. 

He kindly posted a photo and received hundreds 

of comments suggesting he put the fox cub back 

where he found it!!! 

Heard a loud bang? A siren? A leaf falling from a 

tree? Fear not...within 5 minutes there will be an 

explanation on Facebook. 

It’s fantastic, heartwarming and occasionally, 

hilarious. 

Shuffling around the kitchen in my PJs recently, a 

tiny voice called; “Hi Ali”, then another; “Hello”, then 

a deeper, tiny voice; “Ayup Ali”. My son was cooking 

his tea and seeing my confusion, he pointed to 

the shelf and there was his phone with five tiny 

faces waving at me. All a bit Willy Wonka for me. 

Apparently it’s called Group FaceTime. Get with it 

grandma!! 

There is a lot of negative press surrounding the 

abuse of social media. Cyber bullying, fake news 

and online grooming to name but a few of the 

unspeakable ways technology is misused. However 

it can also be a great asset to communities. 

I have to share my favourite post of last year with 

you. It went something like this; 

“BIG UP to the guy outside the library traffic lights 

who pulled up behind me in the middle of the road 

on a red mobility scooter. At first I thought, get 

on the pavement before you get hit, until I heard 

the engine and he overtook me, MANS GOT A 

MOTORBIKE ENGINE IN IT! Post some pictures pal.”

Royal Shakespeare Company’s

Improvements continue at Gedling Country Park 

with £120k viewing platforms planned for March. 

The platforms are part of wider investments at the 

park which also includes a car park extension and 

covered outdoor seating area. 

Gedling Country Park has expansive views spanning 

into Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire, 

which will now be enhanced thanks to two viewing 

platforms, one of which will be four metres high. 

The platforms, which will be installed to the north and 

south of the solar panel farm at the park, will both 

feature wheelchair and pushchair accessible ramps 

and interpretation panels with information about 

the views beyond the platforms such as Lincoln 

Cathedral and Belvoir Castle. 

The £120k funding for the platforms was awarded 

by the Rural Payments Agency, who provide grants 

for projects which help promote growth, jobs and 

tourism in rural areas. 

Since opening in March 2015, the park has become 

increasingly popular, with around 100,000 visitors 

per year, with many attracted by the family friendly 

events, wildlife conservation projects and heritage of 

the site. 

To help with the increasing number of visitors to the 

park, the car park will be extended by 100 places and 

a new £73k covered seating area outside the parks 

café, Café 1899, will also be installed. 


SLUG & LETTUCE OPENS ON MARKET SQUARE 

Slug & Lettuce has unveiled its second venue in 

Nottingham, as it brings another dose of glitz 

and glamour to the city. 

The Slug and Lettuce, formerly Yates, is 

located just off Market Square. This lovely 

old building has had a total facelift. The only 

thing remaining from its previous life is the 

huge clock that takes centre stage upstairs in 

the gallery. 

The make-over is pretty amazing and perfect 

for the ‘insta” generation. From the cherry 

blossom trees dotted about everywhere to 

the pretty gilded cage booths, there are photo 

opportunities everywhere. 

We arrived on Friday evening to a warm 

welcome and a real buzzing atmosphere. 

This place is perfect for a group get together. 

Grab yourselves a booth and order a porn star 

martini cocktail tree. Happy days! 

We sat upstairs in the gallery and ordered an 

S & L Sharer. It arrived in a fancy three 

tier gilded cage, and after a quick photo 

(see what I mean...) it was polished off 

very quickly. The stand out starter was the 

glazed ribs.

This is good pub grub and reasonably priced. 

Desserts were 3 for £7. A cute trio of 

deliciousness washed down with a bottle of

of town, this place is perfect.

Here at NGHQ we came up with a great idea 

last year. Fed up with the same boring salad every 

day, we decided that once a week (Wednesday) 

we would take turns to cook for the team. It has 

been a massive success and is still going strong. 

We have enjoyed soups, toasties, warm salads, 

risottos, noodles, jacket spuds and casseroles. 

Trying to pick a top three was really diffi cult. We 

all loved the sausage and bean casserole. The 

curried chicken noodle bowls were delicious. 

Jacket potatoes with homemade beans and 

chorizo blew us away. In fact, we have had a few 

stuff ed jackets and they were all amazing! 

It’s a challenge to keep coming up with new and 

original ideas, but we love it. I scour through my 

cook books every month looking for suitable 

dishes. Not too fi lling (we don’t want everyone to 

fall asleep!), easy to cook in a toaster, microwave 

or mini oven, and not too unhealthy. These 

girls like to watch their waist lines. The recipes 

opposite received the most votes and we hope 

you enjoy them as much as we did.

Enchilada Lasagne 

500g minced beef 

1 courgette – fi nely chopped 

1 carrot – grated, 1 large red onion – fi nely 

chopped, 2 peppers – fi nely chopped 

1 tin kidney beans in chilli sauce 

1 small tin sweetcorn 

500g passata, 100g tomato puree 

2 x garlic cloves - crushed 

2 x beef stock cubes 

2 tsp oregano, 1 tbsp ground cumin 

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 

2 tsp chilli powder, 2 tsp dried chilli fl akes 

1 tbsp paprika, 4 x tortilla wraps 

1 x mozzarella ball – ripped in to pieces 

80g cheddar - grated, Cooking oil 

Preheat the oven to 160°C. Grease a 

24cm spring form tin with oil and line the 

bottom with greaseproof paper. Heat a 

splash of oil in a pan, add the minced 

beef to brown. Then add the vegetables 

and garlic to the meat and mix well. 

Turn down the heat and add the kidney 

beans, sweetcorn, spices, stock cubes, 

tomato puree, Worcestershire sauce 

and passata to the saucepan and mix 

well. Leave to simmer for 25 minutes 

without covering. 

Once the meat has cooked, and the 

sauce has reduced, you need to layer up 

the dish. Place a wrap at the bottom of 

the lined tin. Place a layer of the meat 

and veg on top. Continue this pattern, 

ending with a layer of meat. Top with 

grated cheese and mozzarella. Sprinkle 

with a little paprika. Bake for 25 mins 

until the cheese is golden. Once cooled 

slightly, run a knife around the edge, 

unclasp the spring form tin and carefully 

lift the tin away. Cut a wedge, and 

serve immediately! 

Couscous with Roasted 

Veg, Feta & Hummus 

Dressing 

Couscous – enough for 4 people 

4 x peppers (mix of red, yellow, green) 

2 x courgettes, 1 x aubergine 

2 x red onions 

olive oil & butter, squeezy honey 

fresh basil, 125g pot hummus 

3 tbsp Greek yogurt (plain) 

½ lemon 

feta cheese (optional) 

salt & black pepper 

Chop all veg into 2.5cm pieces. In 

a bowl toss with 2 tbsp olive oil and 

season well. Add to large baking tray 

and roast at 230°C for about 30/40 

mins. Check every 10 mins. They are 

done when the veg is soft and slightly 

charred. For the last 5 mins add a 

squirt of honey and some chopped 

fresh basil. 

Cook couscous as per packet 

instructions in an ovenproof dish. 

Once all liquid absorbed – add juice of 

half a lemon, butter and olive oil and 

season with salt and black pepper. Mix 

well and cover with foil. Bake in oven 

for 10 mins (add 10 mins before veg 

is fi nished). 

Meanwhile make the lemon hummus 

sauce. Whisk 3tbsp plain Greek yogurt 

and juice of half a lemon with the 

hummus and season to taste. 

To assemble, spoon the couscous 

onto a plate, top with the roasted veg 

and drizzle the sauce over. 

Optional – add some crumbled feta 

cheese on top of the veg. 

Sweet Potato & 

Lentil Soup 

2 tsp medium curry powder 

3 tbsp olive oil 

2 onions, grated 

1 eating apple, peeled, cored and grated 

3 garlic cloves, crushed 

20g pack coriander, stalks chopped 

thumb-size piece fresh root ginger 

800g sweet potatoes 

1.2l low-sodium vegetable stock 

100g red lentils 

300ml milk 

Juice 1 lime 

Put the curry powder into a large 

saucepan, then toast over a medium 

heat for 2 mins. Add the olive oil, stirring 

as the spice sizzles in the pan. Tip in the 

onions, apple, garlic, coriander stalks 

and ginger, season, then gently cook for 

5 mins, stirring every so often. 

Meanwhile, peel, then chop the sweet 

potatoes. Tip into the pan with the stock, 

lentils, milk and seasoning, then simmer, 

covered, for 20 mins. Blend until smooth 

using a stick blender. Stir in the lime juice, 

check the seasoning and serve, topped 

with roughly-chopped coriander leaves.

WINTER GARDEN 

bling 

When the flowers have faded, the 

autumn leaves have blown away 

and stems turned brown, the garden 

can look a dreary place; on hold and 

waiting for spring to awaken it. But there 

is plenty of sparkle and colour to be had as winter 

takes hold. Walking round my garden last winter I 

found so much to take my eye and delight me. 

The fi rst eye-catcher is a big splash of colour from 

the stems or berries of a tree or shrub. The fl owering 

dogwoods (Cornus alba) are blazing with colour 

from their bare stems. My favourites include the 

orange “Midwinter Fire”, the deep red “Sibirica” 

and even the black “Kesselringii” which looks 

stunning with the wan winter sun shining through. 

The snakebark maples are spreading their intricately 

patterned branches against the winter sky with 

red twigs and olive-green and cream trunks. 

“George Forrest” has the best coloured twigs and 

“Serpentine” the best trunk pattern. The trunks of 

Himalayan birch (Betula jackmontii) is white like 

bleached bones against the shadows. Another 

favourite is the trunk of the Tibetan cherry (Prunus 

serrula) whose dark red bark looks polished to mirror 

fi nish and is fi lled with swirling patterns of colour. 

Shrubs and trees are still covered with berries. 

My favourite of all is holly with all its Christmas 

associations and memories. The redwings will soon 

fl y in from Scandinavia and strip the trees of this 

winter feast. The fi rethorns (Pyracantha) are living 

up to their name: the yellow-berried ones haven’t 

been stripped yet and the stems of Cotoneaster 

horizontalis are fi rmly vertical, splayed out against a 

fence and studded with small red berries. 

Evergreen shrubs and plants add some colour 

through the winter, particularly the showy Heucheras 

like “Caramel”, “Blackberry Jam” or “Geisha Fan”. 

On a frosty morning the leaves are coated and 

edged with ice and look like candied fruits. 

Frost, ice and dew make the garden sparkle. Frozen 

droplets hang, suspended from the wheaten seed 

heads of giant oats (Stipa gigantea) and glisten 

on the heads of feather grasses (Miscanthus and 

Calamagrostis), shining brightly in the low sun. 

Evergreen spurges (Euphorbia) become sprinkled 

with a diamond-dust of dew and ice and this 

will cause them to bow their heads as it melts, 

recovering their pose when the weather warms up. 

The crinkly leaves of the sun roses (Cistus) are edged 

with frost and even the watering can and rabbit-wire 

fences are transformed into sculptural shapes by the 

frost. 

The dead-stems of herbaceous plants are dusted with 

frost and seemingly shining in the light. My favourites 

are Turkish sage (Phlomis russeliana) with pepper pot 

seed heads; sea holly (Eryngium) draped with silver 

strings of frosted spider web; and the dead-heads 

of conefl owers (Rudbeckia) like silver-edged spears 

pointing to the sky. 

Winter may seem long and cold, but there’s always 

some bling to brighten the short days.

Leafe at The White Lion

Many pubs throughout the UK have red, white 

or golden lions as their names. Many of these 

names have royal links. The white lion is the 

livery badge associated with the Duke of 

Norfolk as well as King Edward IV. 

Many of these white lion pubs can trace their 

origins back to this time. There was a pub 

in Lambley called the White Lion. For over 40 

years, the landlord was William Leafe. 

William’s parents were Thomas and Frances 

Leafe from Woodborough where they operated 

as framework knitters. Their son William was 

born in Woodborough in 1814 and baptised in 

the local church in December of the same year. 

He had three brothers and two sisters. The 

sons followed their parents into the hosiery 

trade. William became a framework knitter like 

his father. 

William married Sarah Caunt who, aged 16, was 

7 years his junior, in September 1837. It would 

appear that she had been pregnant and had 

given birth to a son the same year (before their 

marrage). The child was named James Caunt. 

However William was listed as the father. 

After their marriage the couple settled down in 

Woodthorpe where they had a daughter, Mary, 

in 1840 and a further son, William jnr, in 1841. 

Their marriage was not a long one however, as 

Sarah died in 1845. 

William remarried in April 1847 to Charlotte 

Plumb from Radford. They had a total of three 

sons and two daughters between 1848 and 

1857. They were all born in Woodborough where 

the family were still living. 

Most landlords at the time could not sustain a 

sufficiently high enough income from the pubs 

alone so they usually had a second profession. 

William appears to have carried on with the 

stocking frame knitting as well, at least in a 

limited form, during his time at the pub. 

In May 1866 William Leafe was robbed of some 

chickens and some unfinished socks which 

were immediately reported to Sergeant Holland 

from the local police. Both the missing items 

had been in the loft and workshop of a barn 

attached to the pub that William used as his 

workshop. 

Sergeant Holland investigated in the local area 

and the culprit was soon found. It was in fact 

Williams own son William jnr who was caught 

trying to sell the chickens and socks for 2/6d to 

a local man in Woodborough. He was taken into 

custody and charged. 

William jnr appeared in court in May 1866 and 

admitted the crime. His father stated in court 

that this was the only time that he had stolen 

from him. He also explained that his son had 

suffered from fits and that this must have 

affected his mind. The son said that he had left 

home some time ago and had only done this 

deed as he had no work and was starving. He 

was found guilty and given what, for then, was 

a light sentence of prison for one month with 

hard labour. 

In 1853 William’s brother Joseph had a change 

of occupation and became the owner of a beer 

house in Woodborough, the Bugle Horn. 

By 1861 William and his family had followed 

his brother into the inn keeping business. They 

moved to Lambley as William now held the 

licence for the White Lion in the village.

just yet, rather a rumination 

regarding the practicality of 

electric vehicle travel right here 

and right now. 

TIP 1 

Before going anywhere you 

absolutely must download the 

fantastic Zap-Map app which is 

compatible with both Android 

and IOS and is packed full of 

invaluable features. Without going 

into detail, you input your own EV 

information and then have access 

to a UK-wide charging point map 

(constantly updated) currently 

showing over 6,000 charging 

locations and 19,000 connectors. 

There’s also a superb route 

planning feature that you can 

customise to your own required 

specifications. Believe me when 

I say that this superb app helps 

extinguish any doubts regarding 

range anxiety. 

TIP 2 

Familiarise yourself with the type of 

charger you need to find on the 

journey so that you can access 

maximum range for the time spent 

charging. Turns out they’re not all 

the same... Checkout the What 

Car? EV charging guide online and 

look for rapid chargers rather than 

just fast on Zap Map. 

TIP 3 

Take a good look next time you 

see an EV charge point at the 

services. They all look the same 

don’t they? Now look closely at 

the charging cables available 

and you’ll notice that some have 

a Type 2 charger (capable of 

charging from 7 kW to 22 kW, fully 

charging an EV in 3-4 hours) on one 

side and a Chademo on the other 

and yet others have a CCS (rapid 

DC units which are at least 50 kW 

and will charge the majority of EVs 

to 80% in around 30-60 minutes) 

and Chademo charger. Which to 

choose? It’s different for some EVs 

(Nissan, Renault, Mitsubishi and 

Tesla) but generally and from my 

own experience with the Kia, it’s 

the CCS type charger that you 

need when looking to maximise 

recharging. 

TIP 4 

Don’t waste time charging twice 

at a charge point (one 45 min 

charge followed straight away by 

another) trying to get the battery 

up to 100%, as it takes longer than 

just finding another charge point as 

and when you need it. Most, if not 

all, EV manufacturers recommend 

that charging to 80% rather than 

100% will help extend the real 

world lifespan of the EV’s battery 

pack. Indeed, Tesla themselves 

recommend charging to 100% 

only if a longer journey is to be 

undertaken. And then there’s the 

time it takes to fill the final 20%, 

which takes longer to complete 

relative to the first 80%. So charge 

to 80% and off you go. 

TIP 5 

Download and register with a 

number of the most popular EV 

charging apps available on either 

IOS or Android allowing yourself 

the luxury of choice when it comes 

to charging your chosen EV. 

You really don’t want to be wasting 

time trying to set up the correct 

app and payment card on the 

journey itself. Try out Zap Map, 

ChargePoint, PlugShare, Polar Plus, 

Pod-Point and Electric 

HIGHWAY. 

Whether we like it or not the electric 

vehicle revolution is here to stay. 

Prices will come down, range will 

increase and charging times will 

reduce, but until they do, take on 

board the advice given and carry 

on enjoying the drive. It’s going to 

be a electrifying journey.

Well here we are at the doorstep 

of another new decade. Where did 

the last one go? And where will 

the next ten years take you? 

Within the world of employment we have seen huge 

changes since 2010. If you’re not active on social 

media today do you even exist? 

The days of being chained to your desk are long 

gone – flexible, agile working is offered by many 

employers. 

Shared parental leave was also introduced in 2015 

which is a huge (and welcome) leap forward in terms 

of recognising that both parents have a part to play 

in the early years. 

In my volunteer role with a local secondary school 

I am delighted to see that careers provision is 

gradually being given the importance it deserves. 

Still woefully underfunded, I’ve seen a definite 

move toward engaging with outside organisations 

to seek the expertise and support required. This is 

the only way to tackle the skills gap – by effective 

communication between employers and education 

providers at all levels. 

Having stated all of the above, as an employer, the 

progress I’m most satisfied with is the recognition 

within the workplace that mental health matters. 

There is an awareness that definitely wasn’t there ten 

years ago. Depression and anxiety is real for a large 

proportion of the working population on a daily basis. 

Talking about it can only help. 

As I write, Brexit is still undecided and there are many 

other challenges facing us over the next decade. We 

must face those challenges head on with common 

sense and positivity.

Death in the 

family 

I 

t was always going to happen. We’ve had the first 

death in our family which we had to explain to the 

children. Even worse, my daughter was the one who 

discovered the body and my wife and I had to deal 

with the aftermath. 

Fear not! Fortunately, it was one of the family Guinea 

Pigs rather than a dead relative. We haven’t had 

to re-enact a real life version of Cluedo, so we can 

safely put the candlestick and lead pipe back in the 

ballroom. 

We’ve had the Guinea Pigs for about a year. Originally 

we bought two and one morning we discovered that 

another had appeared. Evidently one of the original 

pair was pregnant when we bought her so we got 

three for the price of two, which made me quite happy 

about the inherent savings on the family budget. It 

was also my daughter that discovered we had a new 

arrival whilst I was preparing their breakfast, so in 

some small way it’s appropriate that she was the first 

to find the recent dead Guinea Pig. She appears to 

have turned into some sort of child-like ferry person 

who guides pets across the river Styx. 

We’ve had animal deaths in our house before, though 

this is the first time it’s been one of our pets. There 

was the time when a dead rat fell out of the ceiling 

during a bathroom renovation, that poor fella got put 

in a bin bag and left on the driveway so that yours 

truly could dispose of it in the dustbin. Then there was 

the pigeon that flew straight into our patio door and 

broke its neck. Cue Dad poking it with a broom to 

see if it was definitely an ex-pigeon before putting it 

in its own bin bag and disposing of it in a similar way 

to the rat. 

It turns out there’s a double standard of disposing of 

animals depending on whether it’s your own pet, or 

just some random wildlife. When I suggested to my 

wife that we should follow the same procedure with the 

Guinea Pig as we had with the previous animals I was 

met with a very stern “I should think not”. Apparently 

the bin was far too common a burial method for our 

furry ex family member. So we found a cardboard 

box big enough to put the now stiff Guinea Pig in 

and resolved to bury it with full honours later that day. 

When I returned from work the ceremony was already 

over, it turns out the children had got over the shock 

pretty fast. In fact they didn’t hang around much past 

halfway through the burial leaving my wife to see out 

the duties by herself in the rain. 

In fact, aside from the immediate shock of finding 

the dead pet the kids were pretty much okay. To 

my complete surprise it was my wife who was the 

emotional one, she seemed pretty upset when we told 

her what we’d found which I think surprised her as 

much as us! 

In the weeks since we’ve returned to normal. The kids 

bought some flowers which was nice, and the bright 

side is that there’s one less Guinea Pig to clean up 

after. Which is more of a benefit to my wife and I as 

the kids do almost no cleaning up after ‘their’ pets. 

Only having two left gives me at least a 50/50 chance 

of remembering their names (the pets not the kids), so 

that makes things easier too. 

People used to say to me “get a pet, it teaches your 

kids about life and death”. Honestly, I felt that was 

quite a macabre way to look at it, and I hope that’s 

not peoples primary motivation. But there’s something 

in it, it’s been good to see how much pets mean to 

us and also how the 

children (and wife) have 

coped. Me? I’ve still got a 

spare set of bin bags and 

a broom handle ready, 

just in case. 

Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children 

who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me 

to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of 

parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

Cropwell Bishop Circular Walk 

Walk distance: 2.5 miles 

Walks With Emily & Friends 

Difficulty: Very easy (however there are two stiles, so 

this might not be suitable for larger dogs). 

Pub stop: We didn’t have a pub stop on this walk. 

Starting point: Hoe View Road, Cropwell Bishop 

Cropwell Bishop is a lovely little village about 25 

minutes out of Nottingham. There are plenty of 

longer walks you can also do from the path you 

join on this walk, we just didn’t have enough time 

to go further. 

Keep on this path passing the backs of several 

houses. This path will bring you back on to the 

main road where we started. Turn left when you 

reach the end of the road and Hoe View Road will 

be on your left a few yards down the road. 

We parked on Hoe View Road in Cropwell Bishop. 

This is a housing estate, so parking is free, but 

remember to park responsibly. As you come out 

of Hoe View Road, turn left on to the main road, 

passing the Cropwell Bishop Creamery a few 

hundred yards down the road. 

There is a lovely shop here that is open to the 

public where you can pick up artisan cheese 

amongst other items. Unfortunately this isn’t open 

on Sundays- check the website for full opening 

times.

After passing the Creamery, carry on past the 

church and up the hill. Just after the end of the 

row of houses on the left you will see a stile and 

a public foothpath sign pointing left into a field. 

Cross the stile and follow the path down into the 

field until you reach another stile, continue across 

this and down the path. 

The path winds round to the right a little, continue 

following it, until it straightens again and meets 

another path. Follow the footpath signs and turn 

left along the stream. 

Continue walking down this path until you reach 

Cropwell Bishop Road (remember to put your dog 

on the lead here as it is a fast road). Cross the 

road and continue to follow the path. Keep walking 

until you reach a t-junction, turning left at this point 

to follow the path up a steady hill.
