Oval meeting for John Daniels with Michael
Atherton
John was presented with a special coaching
certificate by the former England captain during the
first Test against South Africa. He has led the Bexley
Borough U13 girls’ team to two Lords indoor finals
at the London Youth Games, winning once and
finishing as runners up in the other.
The girls’ team continues to flourish in Bexley and
Sidcup, with several players going on to have trials
for Kent.
Daniels was one of 12 coaches who met with
Atherton during lunch on pitch at the Kia Oval,
all of them being acknowledged by the Sky Sports
ECB coach education programme’s reward and
recognition scheme.
“Sky Sports has given fantastic exposure to coaching
and to the game in general,” said Daniels.
“With the ECB, their funding of the coaching
The Sky Sports ECB coach
attract and train coaches at all
levels of cricket in England and
Congratulations to John on this
much deserved recognition. It is
thanks to John’s dedication and
commitment to Girl’s cricket in
Bexley Borough that has helped
lead to the formation of girls
sections at Bexley and Sidcup,
which are now thriving and on
Thursday 3rd August we saw the
launch of a joint Ladies team
between Bexley and Sidcup
which we hope will lead to a
Ladies 2nd XI at Bexley and a
Ladies team at Sidcup in the future as well.

Bexley 1’s V Hartley 1’s
Saturday saw the eagerly anticipated top of the table
clash between Bexley and Hartley, suprisingly I won
the toss for the second week in a row and decided
that on a fairly decent looking wicket we would
have bat. Things didn’t really get off to the way we
would have liked as Min was out second ball caught
at square leg. George then strode to the crease and
he and Greg consilidated before Greg was run out,
Sandeep was caught for not many and then George
was bowled by a ball that turned a mile leaving us
88-4. Jack and Riles then tried to reconsolidate, and
did so sucessfully to an extent Riles finishing with
35 and Jack 50 as Bexley finished their 50 overs
on 219 All out!! We knew that early wickets would
be the key and unfortunately this wasn’t the case
and when we thought we had the breakthrough the
umpire seemed to be the only person in the ground
that didn’t hear the edge from Hockers. Hartley continued
to accumulate the runs and we found wickets
hard to come by, and they reached the total 4 down
in the 45th over, Riles the pick of the bowlers with
1-30 off his 10. The result puts us 14 points behind
Hartley and moves us down to 4th place but it is all
still very tight and all to play for!
1st XI suffer disappointing home
defeat to Hartley
Hartley IIs V Bexley IIs
Thankfully Hartley won the toss and elected to bat.
We got off to an excellent start with Joe Russell
clean bowling their number 1 with the 3rd ball of the
game, Tom Scorgie then got in on the act and bowled
their other opener cheaply. Joe followed this by taking
the wicket of their Skipper with a magnificent
caught and bowled. At this stage we were bowling
and fielding excellently and Hartley were reeling at
19-3, with the white Balotelli finding his voice in the
field things were tough going for the oppo.
Joe took his 3rd and final wicket, bowled again with
a classic slower ball after which he ran down the
wicket and told the departing batsman that he was
much too clever for him! A brief partnership of 30
was then ended with a change of bowling bringing
on Furzy who dismissed their number 6 caught behind
courtesy of an excellent diving catch by Archie
Woodgate…… sorry I meant Richie Barclay.
Joe finished with magnificent figures of 15-5-30-3
bowling his overs straight through. This brought
about the introduction of Jas and Pasky into the attack
who between them took the last 5 wickets for
12 runs in 10 overs leaving Hartley all out for 103
and giving us an extra 8 overs. Pasky took 3-3 and
Jas 2-9. Jas has now taken 31 wickets in the season
so far and is still 8 wickets ahead of his nearest rival.
Now for the hard part. Our chase started magnificently
with Murts and Richie taking us along to 30-0
off 6 before a collapse of ridiculous proportions saw
us drop from 30-0 to 40-5 in 5 overs. What followed
was a very hard fought 50 partnership between Stan
Wells and Ian Mobey patiently defending against
their 2 spinners and waiting for the bad ball. When
Mobes was caught behind for 28 we only needed 15
to win which was duly knocked off at a run a ball
by Pasky who clearly doesn’t understand the phrase
“get your head down”.
In amongst all this was Stanley Wells, my rock of
Gibraltar. His patient 21 not out off 48 balls batting
at No.3 was simply sensational. So often this year
Stan has been the stand out batter and I am glad his
efforts this week were rewarded with a victory.
Bexley 3’s V Blackheath
The 3s arrived at Loring knowing nothing but 20
points would suffice against bottom of the league
Blackheath. Having lost three players and an umpire
in 24 hours - it seemed like a tough ask. However, a
change in changing rooms signalled a change in fortunes
in an afternoon that saw many a first. The first
time over 200 runs had been scored in an innings at
loring in 2012, the first league game of the season
for Sully, the first time Deano has run a three and by
the looks of things the first time their number 8 had
ever held a bat (a wicket is a wicket, Bondy).
So Bexley were to bat first and a promising start
from Moore and Richie set us up nicely. Unfortunately
both gave their wickets away cheaply and
there was an obvious need to dig in. Stroudley and
Griggs started to build a partnership until Aiden
gave his wicket away cheaply after a promising start.
Webster showed his experience by digging in and
occupying the crease with an important 17. Stroudley
went on to score 56 and Peters added a quick fire
25 to finish on an impressive 212/9.
Although confident Bexley knew they would still
have to perform to get the win. The opening pair
of Bond and O’Sullivan looked a class above the
Blackheath batsmen finishing with 2 and 4 wickets
respectively. Newell and Griggs picked up one each
to finish them off for 92 after one of the most boring
number 11 innings ever seen (5 from 55 balls).
So 20 points the target, 20 points achieved. Another
big game this week as we take on Blackheath City of
London. A win would put us in a comfortable position
for a solid finish to the season. The same attitude
and desire will definitely be required.
Bexley 4’s away v Ashford town
Both teams were without an umpire so we tossed and
were sent in by the town, on a very hard, true deck.
Brilliant batting display all round, with Richley
getting 28 , Guiners 40 odd, Clay 25 and a smashing
red ink 60 for Louie Terry on his debut for the
4’s. We finished up with 189 off our 50, which we
thought was a decent score.
After tea we went out to bowl, and thought the
wicket would turn so opened up with spin. Guiners
took a few early wickets, another 4 fer, Terry,
another spinner snared 2, Clarkey bowled tight and
consistent lengths yet again, which really frustrated
the batters. Blandy’s second spell was solid, also
taking 2 wickets. The lower order batters put on
a winning partnership, Town needing only 3 off 3
overs, with 2 wickets in hand. The captain brought
Guinners back on, and he bowled the last 2 in 3
balls, for a 20 point win from the 4 th eleven. We are
now 4 th in the table, a sensational effort considering
every week we lose on average 3-5 of our best
players. Next week we’ve got Rodmersham, looking
to consolidate our position in the top 4.
Bexley Ladies XI’s v Brighton & Hove
After a number of weeks off with rain cancelling
games and County cricket taking the stage the girls
were together again at Brighton & Hove, after a tireless
week of asking many ladies to play, we could
only manage 9, due to the Olympics and holidays.
We decided to travel as bonus points were better
than losing 5 points. With the sun shining and the sea
breeze bellowing away we lost the toss and weirdly
were put into bat, Elyse Villiani and Alice Davidson-
Richards made an awesome opening stand 146,
Elyse Villiani making a century before middling one
to deep square leg, Alice batted through the innings
making 70, a few unlucky decisions and lucky catches
saw Bexley all out for 194, a respectable score.
With 9 fielders it was hard to plug the gaps, which
made building pressure almost impossible. After
some hard work we picked up four wickets before
Brighton made the total with Holly Colvin (England)
making an unbeaten 98*.
Bexley C.C. Colts
It has been a trying and testing season for all of the
Colt teams what with battling the awful summer
weather and constant changes of fixtures and venues.
The managers and coaches, some new to the perils
and pitfalls of Colts cricket, have done an amazing
job keeping it all together and trying their hardest
to make it all work out. A big thank you to all the
effort the managers, coaches and helpers have made
for making the best of what has been a season of
frustration and frequent headaches. We have just
about completed the Colts season and fortunes
have been mixed. Whilst it is always pleasing to
be successful, for some it has been a learning curve
and the next season will bring further challenges but
the experiences learned throughout the 2012 season,
albeit curtailed, should stand all of the Colts in good
stead for 2013.
It is at this time of the year that we say goodbye to
our current Under 16 squad. Over the past five years
this squad has been one of the most successful in
many years at Bexley CC. Winning their respective
leagues all but once, Under 12 and Under 14 Cup
winners, Kent Under 15 Champions, National
South of England finalists in 2011 and Genese Cup
winners, they have probably done the lot. A very
talented group of cricketers who can boast at least
six Kent County representatives over the years and
they all have ability in all aspects of their cricket.
Andy Furze and his “staff” must be very proud of
what they have achieved over the past seasons and
Bexley CC must take some credit in the development
of these lads, some of whom have so much natural
ability. It takes a lot of hard work and understanding
to make a squad gel together and maintain such a
high level of performance over the five years. Well
done.
Under 16’s. NKJL Under 16
Division One Champions
In a league of only eight teams pitch time was
always at a premium and losing only two games to
bad weather and a concession in another, they only
played four complete matches. That said, they stuck
to the task and won all four matches played scoring
good points along the way leading to their winning
position.
Old Elthamians 63 for 8
Bexley CC 64 for 1
In their last ever NKJL match on Friday 6 th July, they
played Old Elthamians away and following heavy
rain all week, the wicket was quite damp. It was
a welcome to Rob SEHMI, our new acquisition
from Belgium and a current Kent Under 17 squad
member. Winning the toss, the right decision,
Bexley bowled very well and the opening attack of
Harry FURZE (4 overs 3 maidens 1-2) and Harry
CHAPMAN (4 overs 1 maiden 0-5) put paid to
any chance Old Elthamians had of posting a high
score. Backed up by the other bowlers and some
exceptional fielding with two outstanding catches
for Ajay BUNGAR and a good run out for Jordan
FISHER, OE’s could only muster 63 for the loss
of 8 wickets. In reply Bexley made light work of
knocking off the required runs with George HALEY
(28) and Harry FURZE (22*) taking the spoils.
Probably not the sort of match to finish off their
NKJL involvement but successful nevertheless.
Final League Table 2012
Under 15A’s
With their involvement, albeit frustrating, in the
Under 15 ECB Cup competition, league fixtures
began stacking up and it was a challenging finish to
the end of the 2012 season trying to fit matches in
where possible and not without controversy. Added
to this was the Genese Cup competition to fulfil.
Old Colfes 42 all out
Bexley CC 44 for 2
On Sunday 15 th July Old Colfes came to Manor Way
and winning the toss decided to bat. With chances
of dropping points not batting first, the Bexley
bowling attack made short work of dismissing
their opponents in 10.5 overs. Dean JEFFERY (4
the batting line up and Anish PATEL and Jake
BARKWAY got the innings off to a good start
laying the foundation for Aiden GRIGGS (23*) to
come in and hit the winning runs. 15 points from
this game left it all in the balance with Hartley CC
leading the pack at the top of the league.
Bexley CC v Hayes CC - Hayes CC Conceded
14 points
Due to the weather and the constant re-arranging of
the ECB match against Ealing CC, the Hayes fixture
became somewhat controversial. Having agreed to
play on Monday 16 th July, the weather once again put
paid to the match being played. Bexley offered two
further dates in the week but Hayes were unable to
raise a team. Hayes claimed points as a cancellation
but on appeal, Bexley was awarded the concession
points bringing the top of the league situation to an
exciting climax with Bexley needing 14 points in
their last league game against Beckenham CC.
Bexley CC 105 for 9
Beckenham CC 79 for 9
This was not quite the finish to the season the Under
15A’s has expected. Playing at the St Dunstans
School Ground at Catford, Bexley won the toss
and elected to bat. The top order down to number
five failed to really get going apart from Cam
FISHER (18). Thanks to some solid batting in the
middle order from Ryan SAUNDERS (13) and
Jake BARKWAY (21) the total at last started to
increase. Reaching the final score was a feat in itself
. However, the Bexley bowlers supported well in
the field, had no thoughts of losing this match and
restricted Beckenham to 21 for 6 in quick time. Had
it not been for a 27 not out from their number seven
batsman, this could have been over quickly. Try as
they might, the 10 th wicket eluded Bexley and the
win and 15 points secured top spot in the Under 15
Division One League by just one point from Hartley
CC runners up.
Under 15’s
ECB Under 15 Cup
Bexley CC 22 all out
Ealing CC 24-0
The ECB Cup campaign proved to be as frustrating
as the rest of the season with weather affecting
attempts to get the game played. Three cancelled
dates led to this game eventually being played on
Sunday 22 nd July. Ealing CC arrived and put Bexley
into bat on a greenish wicket. What happened next
can only be described as a demolition of the Bexley
batting line up with their opening bowler, in an
amazing spell, taking 6-7 destroying any chance of
a comeback by the remaining batsmen. Boasting
two Middlesex opening bowlers as 2 nd change didn’t
help and Bexley were dismissed for 22. In reply
Ealing knocked off the winning runs. All very
disappointing and having waited for three weeks to
play this match, a bit of an anti-climax. However,
as Kent Champions they should be proud of their
achievement in this tough competition.
Genese Cup Under 15 Competition
Bexley cruised to a clear victory in the 2012 Genese
Cup competition on Monday 23 rd , Tuesday 24 th and
comfortably.
Bexley CC 204 for 7
Beckenham CC 154 for 8
Batting first on a very good Beckenham wicket,
Bexley scored well with Jack Clay (72) leading the
way supported ell by Jonny REGNIER (12) in the
early overs. Cameron FISHER (27) continued
the steady accumulation of runs but the run rate was
slowing. Batting at five, Aiden GRIGGS innings
of 80 not out off 33 balls pushed the total beyond
the 200 mark which should have been enough to
win this match. In reply Beckenham started brightly
with a 25 from the opener and a good 55 from their
number 5 bat which took the score along at a run
OD Cuaco elected to bat and reached a paltry 39 all
the OD Cuaco batsmen. In reply, Dave DIXON (15)
Old Colfes won the toss and elected to bat. Their
the Bexley bowlers took control despite 41 runs from
their opening bat. Ryan SAUNDERS (2-22) started
well but Dean JEFFERY’s five overs for just 8
runs slowed their batting progress. It was left to
Anish PATEL (5-6 off 3.2 overs) that put this match
to bed. A faultless display of off spin bowling. In
reply Jack CLAY (32) and Aiden GRIGGS (38 not
out) took the total beyond the inning score. With
three wins under their belt the Bexley lads could now
celebrate their Genese Cup victory, which they did
in style soaking anyone that moved. The Old Colfes
lads also joined in the fun. Another sit down dinner
Games on Sunday 8th July, Gravesend and Sunday
appalling rain showers. Despite this the Under 15b’s
Unfortunately it was not to be with Horton Kirby
conceding to Bexley. 14 points was not enough
and those two cancelled games probably ended any
chance they had of winning their league. Despite all
of this it has been a season of great improvement in
Under 14’s – Frank Knott Trophy
Bexley CC 127 for 8
Dartford CC 128 for 5
Having progressed through the early rounds to the
semi-final, the Under 14’s finally played the match
against Dartford at Waller Park. Batting first Bexley
made a good score against some good Dartford
bowling. Henry PINE-COFFIN (27) got the ball
rolling ith a good opening stand and despite losing
our number two early on, Jake STEPHENS (33)
maintained the momentum with five boundaries
thrown in. The rest of the batting line up failed to
really get hold of the Dartford bowlers and one by
one wickets fell. Nevertheless a competitive score
giving the bowlers a chance. However the Dartford
openers had other thoughts and knocks of 21 and
53 got Dartford off to a very good start. Jake
STEPHENS (2-22) and Harry HICKMAN (2-13)
worked very hard to stem the run flow whilst taking
wickets. Dartford continued to nibble away at the
score and it ended with Dartford scoring the winning
run off the last ball of the match. A great effort by
the Bexley team but just pipped at the post.
Under 13A’s
Once again it was the weather that curtailed any
chance of the Under 13a’s playing their last two
remaining matches against Bromley Common and
Bexley CC 122 for 5
Dartfordians 112 for 5
On Monday 9 th July the Under 13b’s took on
Dartfordians in a quickly re-arranged venue as
Dartfordians ground was flooded. Hurstmere School
kindly allowed us to use their astro turf wicket.
What followed in the gloomy, cloudy conditions was
a very good game of cricket. Bexley made 122 for
5. Sam BARTON (25 retired) once again showed
what a good batsmen he is setting up the batting
attack. Unfortunately other wickets fell regularly
and only Archie HOBBS-MOORE (13) really
made any impact on the Darts bowlers. However,
their loose bowling cost them 53 in extras! In
reply Bexley bowled well despite the run rate being
almost identical through the first 12 overs of 20.
Dominic FISHER (2-24) took the lions share of the
wickets but it as the innings of 26 by Darts Simon
LANNING that looked to change the game but
Bexley fielded well and prevented Darts running
away with a victory.
Bexley CC 125 all out
Blackheath CC 81 all out
Going into this game the boys knew that a win and
14 points at least would see them crowned League
Champions. Winning the toss and batting first made
a positive start with Dyab MOHIDEEN (13) and
Alex SHANKS (29 not out) batting very well in
gloomy conditions with Alex playing four very
good pull shots off some hostile opening bowling.
The runs continued to accumulate but wickets were
also falling. Dominic FISHER (14) and Harry
GOLDING (17) maintained a good run rate and
the 125 looked in sight. Having reached that target
the last wicket fell. In reply the Blackheath openers
had no answer to Harry GOLDING (0-7 off 3).
Nathan ZEQIRI (3-7 off 4) bowled an exceptional
opening spell which set up the Bexley win. Matt
DAWSON (2-15 off 4) continued to impress with
the ball. Add to that two run outs and a great catch
by Jack O’HARE meant that Blackheath never got
near the total and at 81 all out the game was over and
16 points in the bag securing top spot in the league.
Under 12 Harry Bright Trophy
The semi final in this competition was to be played
on Thursday 19 th July as requested by Blackheath
at the Rectory Field. Due to “staff shortages”
Blackheath were unable to fulfil this fixture and the
match will now have to be played late in August with
the final at Manor Way on Sunday 2 nd September.
Bexley CC 93 for 6
On Wednesday 11 th July the 11a’s travelled to
Old Wilsonians on a very damp, murky evening.
How they actually played a game of cricket was
unbelievable. Batting fist OW’s started off well
despite losing their number two early on. With
24from their opener and a 25 retired from their
number 5, OW’s looked set for a big score. Some
good bowling and hard work in the field the run
rate did slow and Rohan MOON (2-7) and Jack
BLEKSLEY (3-14) both bowled very well to
maintain the pressure on the batsmen. In reply
Joseph NEALE-HALL (17) got the innings off
to a good start. Wickets started to fall but Rohan
MOON (22) and a good knock from Brendan
CARTER (22) kept the game alive and a win in
sight. Unfortunately the overs ran out and Bexley
fell short of the target. A good game of cricket
showing what this squad can do and they should all
take the positives forward from this season to what
will be the challenge of the U13 divisions. Having
Dartford CC 128 for 2
Bexley CC 114 for 6
On Saturday 21 st July the boys travelled to Dartford to
play their last league game of the 2012 season. Dartford
won the toss and batted first and went off at a fair rate
scoring well. Their opener scored 27 and was backed up
down the order with scores of 20 and 26 in the middle
order. A wicket for Edward PINE-COFFIN and a run
out for Louie SHEEHY were the only wickets to fall but
throughout the bowlers and fielders worked really hard
in this match. 128 was a big total to chase down but to
their credit they gave it a good go. Josh CURTIS (15)
batting at 2 started off well and further down the order
James WILLIS (20) and Connor PARKER (23) both
made good scores pushing the Bexley total towards the
winning target. Unfortunately the overs began to run out
and Dartford emerged winners. Our bowling was good
with not too many silly extras showing that this squad is
improving all the time. So that was their first season in
hard ball cricket over. It is always a challenge in league
cricket as there is a lot to think about as the matches are
in progress. Good luck to them next season.
