DEAR READERS….
So, a busy show season starts to
draw to a close just ‘the big one’
now remains and competitors are
no doubt fretting over their horses
and ponies. When it is what you are
working towards, and especially if
you qualified early on in the season,
suddenly the panic of keeping
them sound, their coats in tip top
condition seems all-consuming!
Never mind your placing, you
are a winner just to get there, so enjoy the experience and soak up the
atmosphere.
Did you get to Leicestershire County Show at August Bank Holiday? After
such a long break, it was really well supported which is great to see and
returns in 2017 as a two-day show at the end of August. Let’s hope the
weather doesn’t stop play again.
In mid-September I spent a few hours at Garthorpe Racecourse where
one of our ponies was in the Fun Team for the Belvoir Team Chase. I
personally have not really seen or jumped those fences since my Pony
Club days back in the 1970s, so glad I was staying on the ground on this
occasion but I had forgotten just how much fun team chasing is (despite
the occasional tumble, fortunately not us!). If you’ve ever had the urge to
go cross country in a group, why not give it a go. A dedicated website for
all team chase events can be found at www.teamchasing.co.uk
Northern Racing College
Offers Great Event Facilities
Northern Racing College has, for
a long time, been synonymous
with training young jockeys but
now they are turning their attentions to
the facilities to provide regular events for
competitors and show organisers.
There is a fabulous indoor arena, about
60x40m in dimensions, which had work
done on the surface earlier this year to
make it more suitable for show-jumping
in addition to ridden. The arena is
regularly graded and
sprinklers in the roof
system keep the dust to
a minimum. Easy access
off the car-park into the
arena for horses and
ponies, makes it very
accessible.
Next to the indoor arena
is a smaller, warm-up
arena measuring just
over 40x20m. With gates at the far end,
it is safe and secure for young horses and
nervous riders alike.
Just a little walk from the indoor arenas
is another well-positioned outdoor arena
with another super surface. Ideal for a
jumping or dressage ring.
The Racehorses and students are not
located near the arenas
and you would hardly
notice them going about
their daily routines.
Outside the arenas is ample hard-standing
for lorries and trailers, with easy access
off the main road just outside Blyth, about
10-15 minutes’ drive from the A1.
In the summer, events will be able to
fully utilise the grass in the centre of the
gallops. This area would easily allow for
four or five rings, plus parking and trade
stands.
Northern Racing College Events have their
first indoor show on Sunday 2nd October.
All entries are on the day. The schedule
can be found on the website page at
Northern Racing College Events, via
DRESSAGE
Bywell Beau –
Dancing We Will Go
Memoirs of an Ex Racer
My other told e fro an early
age that “somethings are meant
to be and soeties life ust
has a plan, and you don’t realise it until
certain things happen.
couldnt help but feel this when
stubled across the page of eau on
Facebook. Bywell Beau, a 17 year old
acer who now enoys a successful
Dressage career with his human Hayley
Burson. Looking at the pictures captured
by Hayley’s partner Greg Jackson, there
was soething fascinating about this
combination that really touched my
soul. cant put y finger on what it is
exactly, but there is certainly something
captivating about Beau’s eye, and I could
feel ayleys deterination and passion
fro her words.
I am no expert in racing, however, I do
know a racehorse is a creature of ight
and is taught to run away, and this is a
lesson taught fro a very young age. a
also aware that any conditioned learning
fro a young age is very hard to undo.
he scales of training used for ressage
requires the horse to establish rhythm,
suppleness and contact before even
introducing the concept of ipulsion. t
must take an incredibly strong partnership
to train a racer to become a dancer.
needed to find out ore about this
partnership so I caught up with Hayley;
I read on your page that you had started
riding lesson with your mother but gave up
for a long time before you met Beau. How
did you come to meet Beau?
I did yes, I was more interested in
socialising and college, so horses
copletely left y ind for about
years. hen life changed, and
found yself in the position to be
able to start riding again. Loaning
to begin with, to get back into the
swing of it, then one day spotted
Beau’s advert. Listed as a ‘complete
gentleman’, it couldn’t have been
truer. e was for sale fro the
Richmond Equestrian Centre who
take in e racehorses straight off the
track. They’d said he’d been Cubbing
a couple of ties, but other than
that he was a blank canvas. I still
reeber the first tie ever saw
hi. Stood at the back of the stable,
racing lean, and didn’t look bothered
about anything. But something in his eye
sparkled. said hello, we had a little ride
down their lane, and instantly fell in
love. £00.00 later, took hi hoe.
14 October 2016 Equestrian Life

Another great dressage test!
e took tie to adapt to his new life,
and for e to understand how his ind
worked, but we’ve never looked back.
Taking an Ex Racer and training him to do
dressage must have been a tough task, have
you always had a passion for dressage?
d never attepted dressage before
Beau. Silly as it sounds! I actually hoped
to compete in hunter trials with him, but
it soon became apparent that Beau had
had enough of uping in his career, so
we tried showing. nfortunately that
was just as disastrous as Beau struggled
to cope with the line-up and became
very excitable and silly in the go-rounds.
So then turned to dressage. t first
really didn’t know what I was doing, but
after one or two attepts, realised we
weren’t too bad at the intro. Cue our
trainer, who saw Beau’s potential and
then the dressage bug hit. With dressage I
adore the partnership it takes, two minds
focused on the sae task. he scales of
training is something we’re constantly
working at, and moving up the levels
successfully is our biggest otivator.
enjoy watching other disciplines, but
for e its dressage and dressage alone.
hat feeling down the last centre line
when you know you’ve nailed it, or
when you achieve a lateral move you’ve
been working on for onths othing
compares.
Who trains you and what support is there
for those with Ex-Racers?
y trainer for the last 2 years has been
ouise obson fro horoughbred
ressage. find her way of teaching so
clear and logical. She trains ex racehorses,
along with other breeds, so she knows
how they think and, physically, what
theyre capable of. vividly reeber our
first attept at an affiliated copetition,
which was a complete car crash. I text Lou
saying I was giving up dressage. At this
point she phoned me and said to get a grip
and she would be coming to collect Beau
to do some training with him at her yard
in Buckinghamshire. It was at this point
that everything changed. She guided us
through the bad and the good, to where
we are today. Without her we wouldn’t be
where we are today, she’s an inspiration.
ith e racehorses, theres a fabulous
organisation called the etraining of
Racehorses (ROR), as well as other similar
organisations all doing great things to
support racehorses in their retirement. In
some competitions there are categories
for O eligible e racehorses, which
enables you to be both placed in the class
as a whole, and also placed out of ust
other ROR eligible horses in that class.
he O also has an annual dressage final
every year, which has ualifiers dotted
around the UK. They also have a support
line for any concerns or for help, which
is brilliant. Our Central Region ROR coordinator
Karen has been very supportive
over the years, and it’s like a community.
We’ve had huge success thanks to this
organisation, which I’ll always support in
the future.
What happens with most Ex Racers
nowadays?
Currently there are that many racehorses
that retire due to injury or age, or are
never fast enough to begin with, as well as
various other reasons. Of course there are
some scenarios which don’t have a happy
ending, but retraining retired racehorses
has become increasingly popular over the
last few years. Obviously not all will be
lucky and some sadly end up in the wrong
hands, which is a fact of life, but there
are so many hardworking organisations
now set up to try and rehome these
fantastically
versatile animals.
Having gone
through the
retraining process
yself, its not for
the fainthearted.
You need to
understand what
their lives have
been like before,
and be aware of
how much you’re
changing their
environment.
You’ve then got to
not only teach them
how to be a riding
horse, you’ve got to
teach the to forget
everything they’ve
been taught up
until that point. It
takes time, patience
and perseverance,
but the satisfaction you get is soething
couldn’t describe!
Do you feel you saved Beau as I feel like
that when I look at the pictures of you two
together?
eau was 12, rising 1 when had hi.
Who knows where he could have ended
up, but know that we were eant to find
each other. We have an incredible bond,
its like hes a part of e. hen ride
him, he knows what I’m thinking and at
hoe, feel like he understands e. eau
saved me, he’s taught me so much, and I
honestly don’t know what I’d do without
hi. eople ask e if d get another as
Beau’s now 17. I genuinely don’t know,
as I don’t think I could have the same
relationship with another horse. Beau and
I have been through so much together,
weve worked our way fro nothing to
intro level dressage and aaingly now to
ediu. f youd told e years ago that
I’d have an ex racehorse and be competing
successfully at ediu level and winning
dressage championships I’d have just
laughed. He has his quirks, as do I, but it’s
what akes us s eve had an aaing
journey, along with our sponsors Nicola
Oxley Ethpk and Chillout Horsewear, and
we’ll continue to work our way up until
the tie is right for eau to retire. ot
that he’d let this be anytime soon, as he
certainly enjoys his job!
You can follow Beau on facebook on his
work surface. She could have done this in the
feed room or even on the yard. I then could
have easily got on with my own jobs.
The process was fascinating and gave the
opportunity to really discuss each horses
worming history. Sandy was able to process
the results and provide the correct wormer
for each horse bearing in mind the individual
counts and worming history. This was
definitely uicker and ore personal than the
postal service I have used previously as the
results are instant. Sandy provided wormers
there and then at a very competitive price. I
didn’t have to think about which brand or
ingredient to use. The other very useful aspect
was weighing the horses with the portable
weigh bridge - every single horses weight was
a surprise and without this I fear would have
been under and overdosing nearly every one of
my horses.
The service was a lot less expensive than I
would have imagined. I don’t need to think
about my wormers as I am booked in for the
next session and Sandy will even remind me of
the appointment. Brilliant service that I would
certainly recommend!
FEEDING & HEALTH
Winter Feeding
on a Budget
As the winter months
are just around the
corner, so are the
increases in costs that we
associate with the change
in our horse’s routine that
we experience during this
time. Throughout the
summer, our horses are
turned out for longer periods
and have readily available
grazing, that more often
than not, does not require
supplementation in the form
of haylage or hard feed.
By including a high quality feed balancer
in your horse’s diet from the Blue Chip
range, you can ensure that as well as
achieving excellent value for money, you
are providing a nutritionally balanced diet
suitable for every type of horse or pony.
Throughout the winter, horses typically
use around 80% of their feed energy
to maintain vital metabolic processes
and a constant body temperature, so by
utilising a Blue Chip Balancer, which
contain an EU approved probiotic in their
100% natural, whole cereal and molasses
free forulas, fibre digestibility doubles,
allowing more ‘warming energy’ to be
obtained from the forage that you include
in your horse’s diet. The probiotic also
balances gut bacteria and aids efficient
nutrient absorption, which increases the
proportion of the carefully balanced levels
of vitamins, minerals and nutrients in
Blue Chip feeds which are utilised by your
horse. o further benefit digestion and gut
health as the diet changes, each Blue Chip
balancer is formulated with Nucleotides,
the building blocks of DNA, which
increase the length of intestinal villi,
increasing the surface area available for
absorption and also, they are integral in
aiding the immune response by increasing
white blood cell levels a factor which
is important to help ward off harmful
pathogens which could be carried in the
air as a result of the confines of stabling.
day. Each balancer in the range includes
all the high quality ingredients packed
into each pellet of our other balancers,
such as the comprehensive menthol and
eucalyptus based respiratory supplement,
PrimoVentoTM and SoundHoofTM,
which contains zinc, methionine and
biotin to promote healthy horn growth
in wet winter conditions, but also, each
Super Concentrated Balancer is tailored
to a specific purpose. he range includes
a Senior Balancer, which contains
Chaste Tree Berry extract as part of
the CushinComboTM supplement to
help maintain pituitary gland function
in the older horse, where Cushing’s
Disease can become prevalent as a
result of the dysfunction of this gland,
alongside Glucosamine and MSM for joint
maintenance.
Providing the correct diet for a veteran is essential
throughout Winter
The newest addition to the Super
Concentrated range is the ULSA-COOL
balancer, that incorporates AcidBalTM,
an acid buffering agent comprised of
Lithothamnion which is derived from
marine minerals and can help to alter
gut pH balance by slowly releasing
calcium, magnesium and silicon, over a
prolonged period to enhance the buffering
effect it has on stomach acids. ULSA-
OO also benefits fro the addition of
Beta-Glucans, which coat the stomach
lining with a protective fil and slow
the passage of feed, keeping the stomach
fuller for longer therefore creating a
less acidic environment. Also available
are the Calming balancer, which has all
the benefits of a balancer and caling
supplement in one handy tub and Daily
Health balancer, which will provide your
horse with the daily vitamins, minerals
and nutrients that he needs to thrive.
To choose which balancer in the Blue Chip
range will keep your horse in top condition
this winter and maintain health from the
inside out for an affordable price, visit
EQUINE LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY
With regards to reducing winter costs,
the new range of Blue Chip Super
Concentrated Balancers are the perfect
choice as their highly nutrient dense
formula only requires feeding at a rate
of 100g per day for the average horse,
meaning each 3kg tub, priced at £24.95
lasts one month at a cost of £0.83 per
Grazing can be restricted in the winter
Haddon Training Apprentice Award
Since receiving her Haddon Training
Apprentice Award earlier this year at the
British Breeders Awards Dinner, Rosie
Harbour has experienced life in a racing
yard and moved forwards in her career as a
groom.
Rosie started her apprentice placement at
Witham Villa Equestrian Centre as underconfident,
shy and nervous, however, the
staff there soon realised that they had got
an extremely worthwhile team member in
their idst and fro the first day, osie
proved her commitment to her career and
passion for horses, together with a natural
empathy, who always went the extra mile to
26 October 2016 Equestrian Life
ensure their welfare.
Her determination is a characteristic
that she has carried into her own career
development, achieving her stage 1 and
2 within 9 months of her apprenticeship,
gaining her ABRS initial teachers award,
first aid and child protection certificates all
within 18 months.
Part of Rosie’s award package was the
opportunity of a week’s placement at a
professional yard of her choice and she was
keen to experience working with racehorses,
having only worked with ponies and
dressage horses previously and was placed
with Seamus Mullin’s Wilsford Stables near
Salisbury to
see what life
at a racing
yard could
offer and it
certainly didn’t
disappoint
– riding on the gallops and taking a horse
racing at Worcester were just two of the
opportunities that Rosie experienced and
although she may work with racehorses in
the future, it was the discipline of eventing
is where Rosie’s career move has taken her
and is working for event riders, Ginny and
Will Turnbull gaining valuable experience
and progressing up the ladder.

DRESSAGE
LARA DYSON
Wild Card Delight
Giving birth to her first child has not stopped the
whirlwind life of Lara Dyson. Read on to find out more
about yet another busy month for the dressage rider…
Well, all those who told me
having a baby would change
my life and I wouldn’t be able
to carry on doing what I was doing -
how wrong you were!
Annabelle has changed my life
little bundle of joy anyone could ever
ask for, but she hasn’t stopped me doing
anything I did before she came along.
So, this has been another busy month
for me and the horses.
I have been busy enjoying lots of
family time including a busy week
with my nephew, Thomas and niece,
them every chance of doing well at
the championships for the Brocklesby
Pony Club. Tom did a lovely test to
come third with 76%, Cobby did the
same to come second in her section but
unfortunately the judges didn’t like
Jessica’s test with her comments saying
she was slightly over bent but as an
eight-year-old I would rather be that,
than not on the bit but hey ho.
I had to
explain to Jess
this happens
sometimes and
that’s dressage
for you! The
team came a very
creditable fifth
overall, with one
member missing,
away on holiday.
I had two brilliant
lessons with Rhett Bird in preparation for
the National Championships having found
out that I did indeed get a wild card, so it’s
all systems go in training to get both Felix
and yself up to full fitness.
One of our Cyden ponies, Pilot has gone
out on loan to a lovely pony rider, Sophie
Williams, to educate him and bring him
on from a young, inexperienced pony to
hopefully an FEI schoolmaster for my
nephew, nieces or even my own Annabelle
to ride.
I’ve had a busy month at work. Cyden
Homes’ year end is at the end of October
so there are lots of new homes going over
in September and October which means
there’s lots of snagging for me to do.
I am exceptionally lucky that Annabelle
is so easy, she just comes along with me
and sleeps, feeds, winds and sleeps again
allowing me to just carry on my job of
making sure the houses are up to the
high standard of finish that yden oes
expects.
e have anaged our first little holiday
to urghley orse rials for four days
this is a yearly family reunion for us all
and normally my yearly shopping spree.
This year it was very much Annabelle’s
and not mine!
I look forward to telling you all about
the Nationals in my next blog. Having
got my wild card, I am so proud to have
competed at the winter and summer
regionals and now both national
championships, as well as giving birth to
our first child.
othing can hold e back, its official if
you want something enough you will do
anything to get it and that’s me!
Cleveland Bays Meet at
Doncaster Racing College
A
couple of weeks
ago saw the global
Cleveland Bay Horse
community coming together to
promote the rare and critically
endangered Cleveland Bay.
Every year, supported by the
Cleveland Bay Horse Society,
riders, owners and breeders
are encouraged to get out
and about raising awareness
and raising the profile of
this truly versatile breed of
horse. The breed is popular
worldwide with owner’s in
Canada, America, UK, France,
Australia and New Zealand,
and all are encouraged to take
part in this annual event.
Here in the UK a group
of owners, breeders and
supporters got together
at Doncaster’s Northern
Racing College, at an event
organised with support and
encouragement from the
Cleveland Bay Horse Society.
Twelve horses, both pure and
part bred, enjoyed an informal,
fun filled day with activities
which promote the breed as
an all-round versatile riding
horse. The day began with
a parade of the horses and
a brief commentary of their
breeding and history. A trophy
was presented to the best pure
and part bred the judge would
like to take home!
There were rosettes and
goody bags for all who took
part, riders and supporters
on foot, who were also there
to enjoy a day of watching
Bays in action! There was a
show-jumping course and
local rider Jasmine Lamb (nee
ansfield who copetes part
bred Lindon Joint Honours
in BS, was on hand to offer
advice and support to budding
showjumpers. Trec GBbrought
the control of paces
and obstacle elements to the
day. It seems Cleveland Bays
are very good at Trec and
many expressed an interest in
taking up the sport.
By far the most exciting part of
the day was the experience of
using the gallops and it was a
fantastic sight to see Cleveland
Bays galloping around the
track, it was hard to tell who
enjoyed the experience most, a
horse or rider!
At the end of the day everyone
went home with a huge smile
on their face and a very tired,
but happy Cleveland Bay in
their lorry or trailer.
EVENTING
SEIB Insurance
Brokers Arena
Eventing Final at
Vale View
A
glorious autumnal weekend
was enjoyed by competitors and
spectators at the grand finale of
the 2016 SEIB Insurance Brokers Arena
Eventing series at Vale View Equestrian
Centre in Leicestershire on the 17th to
1th Septeber. his is the first year
that leading insurance broker, SEIB has
sponsored the series.
The winner of each class secured a
valuable £00 first prie as well as
collecting an SEIB horse rug and other
goodies. Generous prizes went down the
line with second placed riders taking
home £200 and an SEIB Saddle pad and
£100 for third. There was also substantial
prie oney to be won at the ualifiers.
Arena eventing is a fast growing sport
that was introduced at the Old Dalby
venue to maximise use of their extensive
facilities. The centre is fast becoming
recognised as one of the UK’s best venues
for the sport. The multiple indoor and
outdoor arenas at Vale View have allowed
an interesting course to be developed,
with a i of show ups, fied and knock
down cross country fences. Starting in the
indoor International Arena, competitors
negotiate a course of show jumps, before
exiting the arena onto the cross country
section and the extensive water complex,
a feature of the venue. The varied and
undulating track built by renowned
British Eventing course builder, Angus
Smales, included a tricky corner, steps, a
brush and ditch combination and a water
complex, almost all on an all-weather
surface. There is something for everyone
in the series with sections for intro, prenovice,
novice and intermediate, the event
appeals to riders of all levels.
Stacie Charlton, from Sandiacre,
Nottingham, rode to victory in the SEIB
80cm Pre-Novice class aboard 22-yearold
Boultbees Applejack (Jack). Stacie
has ridden Jack for 12 years and the pair
enjoy eventing and hunter trials. “He is a
rescue pony from Society for the Welfare
of Horses and Ponies (SWHP). He was
rescued as a yearling, malnourished and
barely able to stand,” explains Stacie, “He
has been a super pony for me and I feel
Class 2 Stacie Charlton and Boultbees
Apple Jack
privileged to have him in my life. He has
his own little fan club and several younger
jockeys lined up, itching to take over the
reins but, I’m not ready to hand him over
just yet.”
“This year we have competed at
hatsworth rena venting and ualified
for the Kent and Masters Arena Eventing
Final held at Blenheim. He jumped really
well, but had an unlucky pole. We still
have Osberston Arena Eventing Final
next weekend along with Horseware
Ireland Hunter Trial Final at Eland Lodge,”
continues Stacie. Jack will have a welldeserved
break after that. “He is 22 years
young and enjoys competing so, for as
long as he enjoys himself and is capable of
doing so, we will keep ticking along.”
Lily Walker, from Melton Mowbray, fought
off strong competition in the SEIB 90cm
Novice class to take the top spot riding her
own Ace Lightening. Lily and the 17-yearold
grey gelding, jumped smoothly and
confidently, taking each fence in their
stride to get closest to the optimum time,
winning the class and taking home the
valuable £00 first prie. he pair often
compete in British Eventing and last year
Lily was crowned the 2015 Pony Club
Novice Show jumping Champion and this
year 2016 BRC Intermediate Winter Show
jumping Champion.
17th-18th SEPTEMBER 2016
Class 3 Lily Walker Ace Lightning
Class4 Millie Bowes-Hall
Millie Bowes-Hall from Upton,
Nottinghamshire, made the most of what
was to be her last competition riding her
own coloured gelding, Choice, to win the
SEIB 1m Intermediate class, before she
heads to University. Millie and Choice put
in a fine perforance, going clear in the
up to height show jumping section before
heading out on the cross country.
Millie has owned the 11-year-old coloured
gelding since he was 4 years old. They are
members of the Rufford Pony Club and
have competed mostly in show jumping.
“Dressage is not his strong point, but we
both enjoy jumping”, said Millie. “He was
such a good boy today, after he had a show
jump down in a previous class. I am now
going to uni and he is going on loan to a
friend. I will still see him, but this was our
last competition”, explained Millie, 19,
who is heading to Nottingham University
to study accounting and finance.
EVENTING
EMMA HYSLOP-WEBB
Photos by Tim Wilkinsonunless stated otherwise
When the
going gets
tough -
the tough
gets going!
So after writing my last article we
headed off to Wellington, where we
had Wally in the Advanced where
he did a personal best dressage of 32
and jumped a super clear show jumping.
I decided not to run him cross-country
as the ground was quite hard, although
it was tempting as I was lying in third
place. The wedding present pulled
it out of the bag again for another
double clear in the Intermediate
with a 31 dressage. Turning into a
dressage diva all that BD is starting
to pay off. Matcho was also in the
intermediate and did a good test, clear
show jumping and I tried a new bit cross
country, once I made sure this worked
I pulled him up as he was heading to
Blenheim in a couple of weeks.
Then Burghley came and I went and
watched my friends wishing I was there
until it started to rain, then pour, and it
became very tricky due to the ground and
the conditions, then I became easier with
my decision to re-route.
We then headed to Blenheim, only
to find y face on the illboards to
Blenheim..... that’s why we chose
Blenheim over Burghley, Wally was the
face of Blenheim! We trotted up and I
sparkled thanks to my jewellery from
Lanes, Wally and Matcho went on to do
their personal best dressage’s at this level.
Wally was amazing, it even bought a tear
to my eye when I halted, that’s saying
something when dressage is involved.
He concentrated and tried so so hard and
that’s all you ever want from your horse
whatever the level.
Then cross country day came, they had
beefed the course up from last year and
ran it in reverse so it had a fresh feel
to it. As I was early on I only got to see
Andrew Nicholson and Oliver Townend
ride on the screen so decisions on long
and short routes had to be made. Wally’s
physio had come to join us on Friday and
he had a treatent first thing on Saturday
morning. Wish I were one of my horses
at times. Then it started to rain and rain
some more. I was soaked before we even
left the start box, there is nothing better
than being counted down five, four, three,
two, one whilst having a last minute word
with yourself ride for rhyth, reeber
your minute markers, remembering your
stride pattern. We are off and Wally is so
up for it, making it feel like a pre novice.
He left a leg at the shield where I had to
sit tight. I needed this placing too much
to pop out the side door, I just remember
telling myself lower leg forward and
shoulders back. He was amazing so bold,
he is such a jumper and he made it feel so
easy. fter finishing and washing hi off
we found a small hole in his elbow where
he had studded himself, there was quite
a bit of blood and the vets were fab. He
was quite sore on it so we did all we could
to make him comfortable on it, however
he was not sound enough to trot up the
next day. GUTTED is an understatement
as we were lying 23rd after cross country
and we needed to finish in the top 2
for our adinton ualification, as this
horse had jumped double clear in every
International he has run in in the last
three years we had hoped to jump clear.
Horses!!!!!!!!
I had to show jump Matcho later that day
at 6.30 and he jumped well, he was a little
star struck as he went into an arena of
clapping and music. He had two down but
we were 73rd to jump in very heavy wet
conditions and I think he got a little stuck
in the mud. Sunday morning came and
Wally was slightly better but we made the
decision to withdraw him as it would not
be fair to ask him to jump with the stud
injury. He is such a jumper and it would
have pulled something terrible.
So the focus was on Matcho man, the sun
had at least come out to dry the ground
up. Normal focus in the start box and we
32 October 2016 Equestrian Life

were off, now for those that follow Matcho
know how high he jumps, when he came
to the 5th fence the open ditch he had
a sneaky look in it on the way over and
scared himself a little. We were half way
around the course and he was not taking
me as much as I would have liked so I
decided to pull him up. It is a very big ask,
asking an 8 year old to jump around such
a large track. Sometimes he tries too hard,
as he sees the fences two foot bigger than
we all do. He is a horse for the future that
has lots of scope.
So after a challenging weekend I have
been re-evaluating everything...... the
great saying goes “if you want something
to change, then do something to change
the outcome”. So I am .... I am selling
some of my horses. Some I have hung
onto for too long so it time for a clear
out. The reason why I am being so harsh
is that I need new, young horses coming
through the grades that are potential four
star horses. My manager is making me be
really rational as I am so emotional as the
horses are all my children. An example
of how rational I am being is that I have
ade up y ind to try and find Oie a
new home. He is now 15 years old and is a
super three star horse, can he win with me
no, can he give someone a lot of valuable
experience yes, would he love his new job
yes, will I cry like a baby, YES. This horse
is like a pet to me, he took me around
y first two star, y first advanced and
first three star. have owned hi for nine
years...There is still a voice in my head
that says if I can’t sell him then I will keep
having fun on him but I do have to try.
My rational head is being forced as the
owners of Matcho want to sell their 65%
shares and would love to find a way of
keeping him. So if anyone is interested
please get in touch as you can see what I
a trying to sacrifice here.
With so much going on I am not heading
to Osberton, and we will bring the
winter plans forward, lots of British
Showjumping and British Dressage. I
have just sold a super Advanced dressage
“IF YOU WANT SOMETHING TO CHANGE, THEN
DO SOMETHING TO CHANGE THE OUTCOME”
mare to a lovely home, and another pony
into the Quorn pony club. I am currently
interviewing for another working pupil,
and am attracting some very big names
with regards to the sale of Matcho. I was
thinking of having a winter campaign
#comeonletstryandkeepmatcho - any
ideas are welcome. It would just be gutting
to see someone else reep all my hard work,
but that is producing for you. If I do sell
him I will be able to buy a few nice young
horses with my money from my shares.
ets see what happens. y phone nuber
is 07495 094399.
I am also looking for new rides and
owners, I have now produced four horses
to three/four star, I try and upgrade one a
year, The wedding present will make the
step up net year to ake it five. a as
hungry as ever for the success, ust finding
a way to make it happen. All of the horses
I have, have progressed at least one level
each season.
We have started our winter clipping and
this week we should be out cubbing as we
have a few hunters to sell. Douglas knows
that the indoor jumping is about to start
as he has had his mane cut/trimmed to
look like a showjumper!!! He cannot wait
to be back out there. As always lots going
on at EHE, let’s see what the next month
brings. Keep up to date on Facebook and
Team Chasing!
REPORT BY DAVID SELBY
The Belvoir Team Chase and Hunter
Trial took place on Sunday 11th
September at Garthorpe racecourse.
This event remains as popular as ever
with 330 horses taking part, more horses
making it around the course than riders,
nothing changes!
The going was near perfect, take-offs
and landings had been prepared and the
rain the day before was welcomed by me,
probably not by the people on horseback
on the Saturday morning. Credit must go
to the course preparation team for all their
hard work, the course looked really good
and preparing take-off’s certainly was
appreciated by the competitors.
There were 5 different classes during the
day, 2 Hunter Trial classes and 3 Team
Chase classes, competitors came from
all over England and Wales to take part.
Most of the nations ‘Open’ teams took
part and used the Intermediate class as
a warm up for the qualifying events that
are coming up in the weeks ahead.
This event always provides good
entertainment and this year was no
exception, some thrills and spills, bruised
pride, but nothing more serious.
SHOWS
The BSPS “White Company”
Gold Cup Sports Pony Final
The 4th British Show Pony Society
“White Company” Gold Cup Sports
ony final was held at the and
Rover Burghley Horse Trials in Ring 2 on
the Sunday 4th September. The class is
divided into three height sections (133cms,
143cms and 153cms) with only twelve
competing in each division. Qualifying
classes are held at the BSPS Winter,
Mid-Summer and Summer Championship
shows and are always very hotly contested!
The competition is in three parts dressage,
followed by a working hunter course which
includes extra marks for the gallop and
finally show uping against the clock. n
the show jumping round there is a bonus
fence which if jumped gives ten extra
points, if knocked down the competitor
loses twenty marks. This always leads to
a nail biting finish and with the hite
Company” bed as the joker fence this year
we were not disappointed.
he 1cs winner was Saffie Osborne
riding Plasdavrene Matty’s Mate or Timmy
as he is known at hoe. Saffie has had
the pony, who is fourteen years old, for
two years and they have ualified for
both the Royal International Horse Show,
where they were third, and the Horse of
the Year Show. This combination has had
a wonderful season, winning the Gold
Cup at the Mid-Summer Show, winning
at Cheshire County and being placed
first in the hapion of hapions at
the Summer Championships. Also at
the Summer Championships they were
ebers of the ngland ea. Saffie
is now really looking forward to HOYS and
has already been declared the Tagg La Liga
winner for her section. Saffie said
that winning at Burghley was something
she will never forget and she just loved
the atmosphere and excitement. “The
course at Burghley really suited Timmy,
because the bigger the fences the better he
jumps. He is my pony of a lifetime and just
so special and he makes me smile.” She
Millie Manners 143cms winner
also said iy is definitely uys
(international artist Katie O’Sullivan)
international event rider and to come back
and win Burghley one day.
The 143cms section was won by Millie
Manners riding Mocklershill Lucky Lady
(Lucy), a 14year old grey mare. The pony
was purchased from Shannon
Sheridan in Ireland three
seasons ago, having
previously been on
the Irish WHP
team and a
winner of the
Desert Orchid
competition
at the Summer
Championships.
This
combination
has enjoyed a
very successful
season winning three R.I
ualifiers and then being
placed third at the RIHS, they were also
second in both the Desert Orchid and
Champion of Champions at the Summer
Championships. Millie was also on the
England Team at the Championships,
winning her 143cms class. Sophie, Millie’s
mother said of the pony, “Give her
kindness and respect and she will give you
everything.” The combination led after
the dressage and maintained this with
two clear jumping rounds. “This was a
fantastic win in the very best of company
and definitely a drea coe true for this
partnership”.
Saffie Osborne 133cms
winner and Champion
Daniella Johnston and Ballyshiel Mr
Monaghan (Murphy) won the 153cms
section where the final outcoe was
in the balance until the very end of the
class. Although 9 years old the pony
(148cms) is still relatively inexperienced
but absolutely loves jumping and is now
really coming into his own. He has been
described as a Ferrari in a Mini’s body!
There was panic a few days before the
competition as he pulled a shoe of whilst
getting up from his morning nap. Daniella
has been helped by Tracey Woodhead for
her at work and goes to atthew anni
for uping training. She has ualified
in three separate WHP height sections
for HOYS which is an absolutely amazing
achievement. Kate, Daniella’s mother,
Daniella Johnston 153cm
winner and reserve
had nothing but
praise for the
competition, saying
that it was the
epitome of what a
competition should
be with jumping the
name of the game.
She commented on the
wonderful camaraderie
between the competitors who
were all genuinely supportive of
each other. The competition was made
all the more exciting by BSPS Vice-
Chairman Paul Cook’s commentary on the
show jumping phase. Time played a very
important part in the competition as did
the joker fence – in the 153cms section the
winner only won by a second!
Finally there was a Championship of
the 1st and 2nd in each section who
came forward to walk, trot, canter and
GALLOP for the judge Richard Ramsay. His
Champion was Plasdavrene Matty’s Mate
and Saffron Osborne, who commented
that Timmy behaved beautifully in the
Championship and that he must have
known that there was a ower sash on
EVENTING
This was the 28th running of the
young event horse showcase which
is kindly sponsored by long term
partners Dubarry. Horses qualify for this
final at venues throughout the season
ranging from County Shows to prestigious
events such as Badminton, Houghton Hall,
Chatsworth, Bramham, Gatcombe and
Hartpury Horse Trials.
The class was the brainchild of
Lincolnshire’s Bill Henson and is designed
to identify horses with the potential to
be international prospects at 3 and
4 star level. Horses are assessed
for their jumping ability, paces,
conformation and type, these
marks are then combined to
determine the top 10 in both 4 and
year old sections. he final 10
then come forward and run through
their paces in front of a fourth judge
who is looking for star quality and
true upper level potential including
assessing the opening of the canter in
4 year olds and the gallop in 5 year olds.
his final udge does not know the arks
from the previous section and horses
come in based on their entry number, not
their current score. hat final udge has
always had a further 10 marks available
which are seen as the star quality input.
This year saw the introduction of a further
assessent at the final hurdle with an
Stark riding the best 4 horses from each
age group. Ian had 8 extra marks at his
disposal for each of the top 4 rides and
this brought a whole new dimension to the
closing stages.
39 horses came forward for the 5 year
olds and 33 in the 4 year old section. As
ever the final saw a strong presence fro
local riders including Ros Canter, Ginnie
Turnbull, Alex Postolowksy, John-Paul
Sheffield, illa ewton, auren Shannon,
5 year old winner John-Paul Sheffield and
an sued up his final decision aking
for onlookers by saying he was assessing
for lightness in the paces, scope and
suppleness combined with adjustability.
He went on to say he was not looking for
perfection but that “gut feel” of potential.
The top jumping marks in this age group
were 35.5 and went to Lorna Collins
(Blackrock Ricardo) and local young rider
Noah Brook on his mother’s Gabana H.
F. D who has been superb this season on
the BE circuit with three BE100 wins from
three starts and a ualification for the
Osberton 5yo Championships at the end of
the month. It was also interesting to note
that uite Soething who finished second
this year with Ros Canter was a graduate
of last year with a top 10 finish in the 201
4 year old class.
31ST AUGUST - 3RD SEPTEMBER
The Dubarry Burghley Young
Event Horse Finals 2016
Shannondale Nadia and
Ros Canter 2nd in the 4
year old class
4 yr old winner Robyn Gray riding Andrew Heffernan’s Trebor
The 4 year old section was full of potential
and as is often the case at these finals, it
was a real showplace of quality horses well
started for the future. It was pleasing to
see that all the horses were well developed
in the basics without being over produced
for this class. All still showed plenty
of freshness for the environment and
provided entertainment for themselves
and the crowd. This class was won by
Robyn Gray riding Andrew Heffernan’s
Trebor. This horse is by the Holstein
event stallion Mighty Magic who while
having the warblood inuence is heavily
littered with strong thoroughbred blood.
This blood showed clearly in Trebor’s
stamp, gallop and ability to shift up and
down the gears within the final selection
stages. Ros Canter also showed her class by
bringing a trio through to the final 10 and
again securing 2nd as well as 3rd and 8th
places with the Shannondale Sarco mare
Shannondale Nadia, Grafenstolz gelding
Lordships Graffalo and the Broadstone
Landmark gelding Land Lord.
The presence of the warmblood remained
strong throughout the finalists in both
age groups with heavy inuence fro the
Dutch KWPN lines. Although this year
also saw a number sired by the GB owned
Trakehner stallion, Grafenstolz. This
stallion is gaining momentum within the
eventing world and this final saw eight
of his offspring enter the two age groups.
It was noticeable that the top 10 in both
groups were light boned and clearly athletic
types with scope for speed and endurance.
The crosscountry
at
Burghley
proves critical
Amateur rider Charlotte Brear and Manor Missile show us how it’s done!
Abigail Bolton and Tilston Tic Toc looking
fabulous during the trot up
In recent years, top level eventing
has frequently been criticised for
being too much of a dressage and
show jumping competition. This was
certainly not the case at the recent
Land Rover Burghley horse trials. Not
one single horse completed the crosscountry
within the time allowed and
over a third of those who set-out failed
to make it home, as Frances McKim
reports.
With the best in the world competing,
many of whom had only recently returned
from the Olympics in Rio, it was a
formidable challenge for our locally based
riders at the Land Rover Burghley Horse
Trials held between 1st-4th September.
One such Olympic competitor was the
winner, Christopher Burton representing
Australia and riding Nobilis, who put-up
a copy book perforance and led the field
fro start to finish. ith only two ritish
riders, Oliver Townend and Kristina Cook,
in the top ten, the final results read rather
like an international ‘who’s who’ of foreign
riders!
But congratulations should go to Sarah
ohen riding reason who finished in
a very creditable 12th position. Having
ridden at the highest level for the Preci-
Spark event yard for 17 years, Sarah
relinquished this position in 2014 to be
able to concentrate on her two young
children and to get more involved with
coaching. Now based at her own home
at Tilton-on-the-Hill in Leicestershire,
Treason, her 14 year-old bay gelding, is the
one and only horse she owns and rides.
This combination last rode at Burghley
in 2013 when they were 19th but had not
completed a 4-star competition since.
With good preparation runs this season,
including top five placings at arbury and
Gatcombe 3-star CIC events, Sarah and
Treason certainly demonstrated they are
a class act. With just 42.3 penalty points
after dressage and in 11th place, the pair
completed a bold but very stylish clear
cross-country collecting 24 time faults,
finishing here in 1th spot. nluckily for
Sarah, her cross-country round coincided
with the very worst of the rain which fell
virtually throughout this phase. Speaking
to her immediately after completing her
round, a delighted Sarah said: “I had a
great ride and got into a good rhythm. I
knew the time was tight, especially with
all the rain we’ve had. You did need to be
careful, particularly on the turns.” In the
final show uping phase on Sunday, two
jumps down meant an additional eight
penalties, but as virtually all the riders
were having faults, Sarah rose to finish the
competition in 12th spot on 74.2 penalties.
power for Sarah Cohen!
Disappointed Ros is awarded
20 penalties
Another local rider celebrating was Ros
Canter from Hallington in Lincolnshire
riding the 11 year-old brown gelding,
Allstar B, owned by Vale View-based
trainer, Caroline Moore. Ros made her
4-star debut at Burghley last year, but
improved on her previous placing of 37th
to finish this year in 2th spot. os ust
have thought she had jumped a clear, if
measured, cross-country round so was
dismayed to learn she had been given
a refusal for crossing her tracks at the
dairy mound complex. Ros said: “I took
a real ‘mix and match’ route – some fast
ways such as at the Trout Hatchery and
then slow routes at Discovery Valley and
the Dairy Mound. The course walked
easier than it rode.” With one of the very
few clear show jumping rounds, Ros
completed her second Burghley with 100.2
penalties.
Sarah Cohen and Treason make light work
of the cross-country
A tall order. Paul Sims is second to
go cross-country
Just one place behind Ros came Paul Sims
who is now based in Cheshire and shares a
yard with his fiance, event rider annah
Bate. Despite being only 29 years-old,
Paul is no stranger to either Burghley or
Badminton, having completed both events
on three occasions on the same horse,
14 year-old Glengarnock. Somewhat
dauntingly Paul was the second horse to
run across country and the first to ake
it home. So who could blame him for
setting off somewhat steadily, yet to his
credit to tackled virtually all the so far
untested direct routes. nfortunately his
luck ran out at the skinny triple bar, which
followed immediately after the massive
drop-off the leaf pit, which Glengarnock
glanced-off. This was followed on Sunday
with a further eight show jumping faults,
giving a final score of 10.
Just one further place lower in the order
was Wymeswold-based Mark Kyle riding
Jesmond Justice. Mark has ridden this
horse for the last two years, following
all his schooling and initial competing
having been done by Newtown Linfordbased
Ginny Turnbull. Fresh back from
competing at Rio, Mark is a familiar sight
at urghley but this was his ounts first
run at star level, nluckily for ark, the
pair of them were stopped and held part
way through their cross-country round
for over 15 minutes. As Mark explained:
“We had got into a lovely rhythm, so to
be held for such a length of time and then
when started again, the first fence was
the massive hanging log which my horse
was a bit sticky over, then he was spooky
at the following fence, the trout hatchery.
Add to this the fact he lost a front shoe so
found the ground slippy. So, all in all, I’m
delighted by how he performed.” However,
his jumping luck rather ran out on the last
day, as not only did the pair knock-down
six fences, but also acquired one time fault.
EVENTING
Continued from overleaf
Kerry Varley says Bluestone Luke almost
knows his own way around the track at
Burghley
Just two places behind Mark was another
of our local riders, Nottinghamshire-based
Kirsty Short riding her own hard-pulling
grey, Cossan Lad. This combination
tackled the competition together last year
but were eliminated on the cross-country,
but her 1 yearold gelding did finish in
2014 when ridden, on Kirsty’s behalf, by
Matthew Wright.
Located at Ryhall, just a stone’s throw
away from Burghley is Kerry Varley.
Accompanied by her own 15 year-old
gelding, Bluestone Luke, this was the
pairs fifth visit, having copleted twice
before as well as tackling her first spin
around Badminton earlier in the year.
Only the seventh to tackle the crosscountry,
they set-off with determination
and, despite a few hairy moments, they
returned safe and sound. But much to
Kerry’s displeasure she was awarded
20 penalties for crossing her tracks
at Discovery Valley. As Kerry said:
“Familiarity with the event may be good,
but the problem is Luke knows where he
is and thinks he knows where he is going!”
With only one fence down in the show
jumping, plus two time penalties, the
Ros Canter and Allstar B set-off with purpose
Paul Sims and Glengarnock lie in 17th place after the dressage phase
couple notched-up their third completion
in 33rd place with 131 penalty points.
An inspiration to amateur riders
Although far from in the rosettes, two of
the youngest riders, Charlotte Brear from
Bingley, Yorks and 21 year-old Abigail
Boulton from Burton on Trent will have
gone home with a sense of achievement.
Both made their debuts at Burghley
last year and then clocked-up a second
completion this time around. What makes
them exceptional is both are amateur
riders, so provide ideal role models for all
aspiring copetitors. ntil very recently,
Abigail’s one and only horse was Tilston
Tic Toc who she looks after herself at
a DIY livery yard and was bought to
compete at novice level, so rising to 4-
star level is a real triumph.
Not to be their day
For others their luck ran out. For
The weather didn’t put off Kirsty Short
with Cossan Lad
Katie Barber from Queniborough in
Leicestershire, this was her second
attempt at the event. Last year she
withdrew before it even stated and this
year she was eliminated when unseated on
the crosscountry by oodfield ia. en
Hobday from Holmes Chapel in Cheshire
suffered a similar fate when Ramilo fell at
the dairy farm complex. Whereas eighttimes
Burghley veteran Angus Smales
(Master Crisp) and debutante Emily
Gilruth (Topwood Beau) both retired on
the cross-country. Poor Lauren Shannon
from Wymeswold, Leicestershire withdrew
before the competition even began and
Leicestershire’s Simon Grieve, who had
two horses entered, withdrew a couple of
weeks before due to a dislocated shoulder.
Elympic One
Day Event at
Eland Lodge...
from an Organisers Point of View
And so it rolls around again, Sunday
the 24th August the Elympic One
Day Event. It didn’t seem like four
years since the last Elympics but here
they were again! We had already enjoyed
the Elympic Dressage and Show Jumping
in earlier weeks, both hugely enjoyable
and engaging but the “Main Event” was
always going to be the Elympic Team One
Day Event, and so it proved. The Eland
Team had been preparing for the event
for weeks, in the office eronica, o and
Zoe were in overdrive with a huge army
of udges, volunteers and officials to
track down and confir and a tidal wave
of competitor requests ranging from the
fairly straightforward to the borderline
insane. While outside the Course Prep
team had an entire site to get ready. I
particularly love our ODE days as I get to
see the whole site in operation, it feels like
the entire place, Retail, Competition and
Livery are all animated and busy, bustling
about with lots to do. The atmosphere had
been helped with Jo’s exploits in dressing
up the shop he ags draped at ust
above head height were very impressive,
even if we all got fed up with the German
ag half way up the stairs. o and
the shop team completed the look with
bunting and National colour clothing
displays, the whole shop looked terrific.
Having invested in a large number of
stables, the event started early with a
number of the teams rolling up on the
night before competition. Team Sweden
particularly had gotten into the spirit
of things early with face paints, blonde
wigs with turned up pigtails that needed
took 1st place The team were Robyn Dutton
Caroline Watterson Giovanni Mereu
and Lisa Hansford
a Health and Safety warning and enough
prosecco to oat a iking ongship
All this the day before the event! The
lorry park developed its own separate
atmosphere as afternoon gave way to
evening with Barbecue smoke and slightly
too loud conversation mixing with the
normal evening noises of the site. The
afternoon and evening before competition
are always busy with show jump and
cross country courses being walked. For
a team one day event it’s always more
entertaining as most of the teams walk
the course together guaranteeing that
more time is applied to talking, fooling
around and trying to control the dogs than
to any form of serious planning. For those
Eland staff preparing for the day ahead
there is always a list of things to be done
going on into the night. This day was no
exception with the presentation podium
to be oved, agpoles to be erected and
gazeebo’s to be put up but by 9:00pm all
Imogen Cook representing Canada on Afan Roddy
The Dark Horse team of Carrie Childs Jo Ellis and Kim Lee representing
the Czech Republic took 2nd place
4th place – Official No Blag Diana Humphries, Emma
Walker, Susan Codd, Danni Nicholson
and a little overcast, by 7 the mist was
gone and the sun was trying to make a
showing. The lorry park was opened at 6
and is almost always the case there was
one lorry waiting outside the gate, it never
fails to impress me just how committed
some people are to the sport, I remember
opening the gate for a BE event at 5:45
am to be greeted by a horsebox full of
people who had travelled all the way from
the New Forest in Hampshire, now that’s
coitent he orry ark fills uickly
on a One Day Event day as everyone
wants to get in early to walk the course
get the pony ready and for the Elympics
there’s the additional pressure of getting
rider and pony dressed up to reect their
allocated country, team Sweden had now
painted their faces blue with the yellow
cross to reect the national ag and were
now running round site like a bunch of
oversize Smurfs. The effort put in by
some of the teams was very impressive,
some of the highlights were obviously
Sweden, with faces painted, horses anks
decorated and a change of wigs, team
USA with the Red, white and blue woven
into horses mains, team Ghana actually
dressed in their national ag and of course
team Jamaica with the Rasta hats, it was
like Cool Runnings all over again.
The 7:00am slot in secretary’s is always
busy with hat checking numbers, bibs
etc. this particular morning was made
frantic with the added pressure of last
minute team changes. Substituting riders
or horses is allowable but it plays havoc
with the scoring spread sheet. Henshaw’s
Hens, representing Finland were chasing
around looking for an additional team
member having lost their third person
and subseuently losing any chance
of competing, they were eventually
combined with The Vatican City to form
one of the more exotic sounding teams
eventually finishing in tenth place, getting
a rosette and I think everyone on site
heard the celebrations.
The dressing up and party atmosphere
aside, the essence of the day is of course
the competition and today did not
disappoint, all phases saw some superb
riding highlights included 20 riders
finishing on a dressage score of less than
30.
The Dressage phase got underway at
8:00am and continued without a break
till almost three, highlights included
isa ansford finishing on a score of 2,
providing the basis for her team’s strong
showing. She was supported by Giovani
ereu, who theselves finished on a
score of 25.75. The Czech Republic also
fared very well on the Dressage phase with
scores of 22.75 and 19 for Jo Ellis and Kim
Lee respectively.
The Show Jumping arena was also busy
all day with Ann Hunter, Judge and Vince
on collecting ring keeping things moving
along all day. Vince does a great job
with competitors on a busy day like this,
calming nerves and encouraging were
necessary, it means a lot to many who
ight otherwise find this intensive day of
competition to much to handle. As it was
Steve’s Show Jump track rode well and we
had a steady stream of clear rounds as the
classes progressed.
The main attraction of the day though was
the Cross Country with some tremendous
riding on display, the colour and spectacle
matched the riding, with almost all of the
teams dressing themselves their horses
or both to reect their adopted country.
Andrew Houldey was starter for the Cross
Country phase and he managed to keep
the day to schedule right the way through
with help from the XC Warm Up Stewards,
Cally and Lola. The day passed thankfully
passed without major incident although
several of our competitors had a problem
with the black ag alternative at 7 in the
Mini track, jumping in the wrong direction
i.e. with the red ag on their left, while the
Horseware Island caused a similar number
of problems with several competitors
uping between the white ags of the
A and B element of the jump, leaving us
sadder and wiser ladies and gentlemen.
After Veronica and Ed had produced the
final scores, the old edal winners were
Norway, a team with a truly international
avour. iovani, fro Sardinia, finished
on his Dressage score of 25.75, he was
very ably supported by a South African
and two Brits, The Czech Republic
finished in the Silver edal position and
South Africa took the Bronze. Out of the
medals but still placed were Uruguay
in fourth, Sweden, blue faces and all in
fifth, reece in sith, alawi in seventh,
Canada in eighth, Germany in ninth and
in tenth the fabulous Vatican City/Finland
combination.
The day ended with the medal ceremony
and presentation, true to form it wasn’t
without incident with the agpole
becoing aed at the ag raising
cereony reuiring us to uickly whip
the agpole down and repair it before we
could get underway. Then as the day drew
to a close we all faced the ag poles to the
strains of the Norwegian national anthem.
24TH – 27TH AUGUST
ARENA UK | REPORT BY SUE WILLIAMS
Area 4B Successes
at BSPS Summer
Championships
The BSPS 47th Summer
Championship Show was held at
rena fro 2th to 27th ugust.
The show began on the Tuesday with
the Young Judges Team and Individual
competitions, where the teams are made
up of three people, one of whom can be
thirteen with the other two having to have
attained their fourteenth birthday, but
they can be no older than twenty one.
These competitors judge a Supreme
Championship using a marking system
where they can allocate up to fifty arks
for the go-round and individual show and
up to fifty for type and conforation. he
teams and individuals represent their
Areas and are able to attend training
throughout the year in preparation for the
competition.
There were eighteen teams and sixteen
individuals forward for assessment,
all very smartly turned out for the
competition. After watching the ponies do
their shows the young people were able
to assess the ponies’ conformation. They
could make notes throughout the class
and then were given time to clarify their
thoughts and placings before going before
the assessors. There were two assessors
for each section – one asked about the
placings given for each individual pony
and required justifying reasons for the
marks awarded, the other judge quizzed
the competitors on rules and judging
situations, as well as awarding them
arks for the suitability of their outfits
for a judging appointment. Although
this is a copetition to find winners the
organisers do try to make it as stress free
an afternoon as possible!
The local BSPS Area 4B team won their
section of the competition despite one
member having to drop out, the day
before, due to illness. Phoebe Rocks
accepted to act as replacement team
member and proved a very able substitute!
The team was made up of Freya Cade (16),
Olympia semi-final qualifiers. Small Breeds Sam
Woolerton with Treworgan Cloudburst
Amy Taylor (13) and Phoebe Rocks (16).
his was the first year that the girls had
competed in the competition and actually
were treating it as a learning experience
for next year but to their surprise won!
The individual competition was won by
Victoria Leavesley from BSPS Area 4A.
The rest of the week was given up to
ridden competition with Olympia and
OS orse of the ear Show ualifiers
on offer as well as a full range of plaited
and mountain and moorland classes.
Leicestershire County
Show Returns!
After an absence of more than 10
years, Leicestershire County Show
came back at August Bank Holiday
with great success.
A range of attractions over the day,
including cattle, sheep and equine sections
saw more than 12,000 visitors attend
the permanent new showground on the
outskirts of Market Harborough.
here were no ualifiers at this years show
as the Organisers commented “we just
wanted to get the first year underway and
take it from there”.
The day ran really well, with no major
hiccups other than few ring changes
but then the heavens opened and it was
decided to bring a halt, for health and safety
reasons, to the remainder of the classes. A
few sections had completed and Champions
and Reserves placed. The Pony and In Hand
Supremes were also able to go ahead but not
the Horse Supreme at the end of the day.
Given the torrential rain that followed for a
long time, a good call made by the Equine
team!
Due to the feedback, Leicestershire County
Show is to return in 2017 as a two-day show,
held on 26th and 27th August at the same
venue. or euine copetitors, affiliations
are being confired and ualifiers will be
The Organisers would like to thank all the
it would not be able to go ahead and look
One of the last Pony Club eventing
support from both members and
non-members coming from a wide area.
Rainfall on the previous Friday improved
the going, especially on the cross-country
This was a debut event for Victoria
Strathmann as organiser and David Burton
as cross-country course designer and
of Dick Evans, who has constructed courses
for the Burton Hunt Pony Club branch at
various venues for over thirty years, and
his wife Freda who organised eventing and
hunter trial fitures. heir colleagues were
glad to see them in more relaxed mode,
watching the show-jumping and taking
refreshments to fence judges on the crosscountry
course.
he ground layout benefited fro a new
look with the show-jumping arena as the
treated to some nail-biting moments such
as when former Burton Pony Club member
BACK SPECIALIST
KERRY DAVEY
MCTIMONEY EQUINE
PRACTITIONER BSC
(HONS) PG DIP AM
MAA REGD. Like people,
horses can suffer from back,
neck, pelvic and musculoskeletal problems,
and can benefit from McTimoney treatment.
Treatment involves careful analysis and
assessment of the spine, pelvis and any other
relevant joints and precise, rapid adjustments
are given to problem areas. Consider taking
advice if you notice changes in performance,
movement, assymmetry, unexplained
resistance or uneven muscle development.
Falls, accidents and slips are ofter a common
cause and competition places even more
strain upon their skeletal structure. Horses
also receive great benefit from preventative
treatment and McTimoney can help them
perform at their best. Kerry is based in
Lincolnshire and obtains requests directly
from owners and referrals from veterinary
practices. Kerry is fully insured and MAA
