Summer Time
August means high summer with long sunny days and
warm evenings with plenty of opportunities for getting
the barbecues out. If you don’t have a barbecue or you
don’t want to go to the trouble of getting it out, why not
treat yourself by getting down to Manor Park over the
August Bank Holiday and join in the celebration (page 5).
It promises to be a great weekend for all ages with plenty
of refreshments or you can even bring your own picnic.
Saturday evening sounds very special but you will need to
get tickets for that evening’s entertainment.
I had the pleasure of attending Sundae Saturday in July
(pages 24 and 25) where many residents came to sample
the teas and ice creams while supporting a very good
cause. The Greek philosopher, Epicurus, believed the
prime good was pleasure; but the height of pleasure for
Epicurus was to sit and converse with a friend in the back
garden in the sun and, no doubt, with a nice cup of tea,
if it had been available in 320 b.c. I’m with Epicurus on
this one.
Summer time is also a time for relaxing with a good book.
The library network is working with the Reading Agency
to encourage children to make use of our libraries (page
20) so why not call into the library this month and see
how new authors can excite a child’s imagination.
There will be a temporary bus station in Lincoln staring
sometime in August. We hear that it may start on Sunday
14th but could not get confirmation of the date from
Stagecoach (page 8). I’m sure all regular passengers will
agree that a modern and more comfortable bus station is
welcome; a little inconvenience now, however, is part of
the price that we have to pay for it.
Hi there, to our webfooted,
soggy-bottomed
friends. You know, we
haven’t heard much
bleating about a water
shortage this year, or even a rebate from
the water boards! Funny, water comes
up from the ground, or down from the
heavens, as it did 80 plus years ago to my
knowledge, but now it costs a devil of a
sight more to fill your kettle than it did
all those years ago. OK, so we had
typhoid, cholera, mild and bitter,
dandelion and burdock, sarsaparilla, but
no Anglian Water or Severn Water
creaming it off. Don’t you feel better for
a good rant?
On Tuesday 2nd August we are holding
an evening of mediumship. This is always
a popular event; entry is by ticket only
from Marilyn on 862411.
On Wednesday 3rd August there is a
strong possibility of a challenge darts
match between the gents and the ladies.
No quarter will be given and no prisoners
taken!
We are holding a barbecue evening on
Saturday 13th August ; 4pm for 5pm.
Manor Park
Celebration Weekend
This year we celebrate the 30th Anniversary
of Welton Football Club, originally
Welton Boys FC but now fully inclusive
with many girls playing. It’s also the
20th anniversary of the official opening
of Manor Park. This was performed in
1996 by the Mayor of Moncé en Belin,
Welton’s twinned village in France and
an inaugural football match was played
between representatives of Welton and
Moncé. The trophy from that match is
still on display at Manor Park, as is the
official opening plaque.
To celebrate both the football club and
the community facilities at Manor Park,
Welton Parish Council, the Welton Moncé
Family Twinning Association and Welton
Football Club have brought together a
weekend of events for everyone to enjoy
over the August Bank holiday weekend.
This year it’s the turn of Moncé families to
visit Welton and over 50 friends will travel
across and join us for the Bank Holiday
weekend. Everyone who played in 1996
is a little older, so this year in conjunction
with the Thursday Walking Football group
we will replicate that inaugural match and
stage an ‘International Walking Football
Match’ between Moncé and Welton at
11am on Sunday 28th August. If you’ve
But the weekend starts on the Friday
evening when there will be a free children’s
disco for any children aged 6 to 14 years
in the marquee at Manor Park. Then on
Saturday between 11am and 4pm there
will be a community fun day with bouncy
castle, assault courses and human table
football. Refreshments will be available
but why not bring you own picnics and
enjoy yourselves?
Saturday evening also sees a special event:
a two course hog roast meal with Live
Band performing in the marquee and
a licensed bar from 7pm. During the
evening there will be a brief recognition of
Welton Football Club’s 30th anniversary
and it is hoped that many past and present
players, managers and supporters will join
in and re-unite.
Genuine parties
I was at a conference last week as the
details of the new prime minister’s first
cabinet were being announced. Some
of my colleagues were reacting to the
appointments with various emotions
ranging from deep approval, through
baffled amusement to despair. I can
only guess at where they each were on
the political spectrum but it did strike
me that they must be far more clued
up than me with regard to UK politics.
I knew the members of parliament
by name, but had no real idea about
most of their track records, and didn’t
feel able to express any meaningful
opinion about their appointments
to key government roles. Perhaps I
should be better informed, I thought.
I have never found current affairs TV
programmes to be the most compelling
viewing, but perhaps I should try harder
to understand the extent of the possible
implications of, say, a ‘Brexiteer’ being
appointed Foreign Secretary.
Of course, the whole question of the
relationship between church and state
has been a live topic for some time. Why
should religion (more accurately, the
Christian faith) have a place at the table
of our national politics? It is an old
adage that one should never mix politics
and religion. Nevertheless, bishops sit in
the House of Lords and speak and vote
Welton NEWS
with their conscience. Some years ago, I
knew a Christian MP who spoke of how
difficult it is for him and his Christian
colleagues of all parties to always vote
in line with their beliefs, since they
were always aware that their first duty
is always to represent the wishes and
opinions of their constituents, and the
reality of thrashing out a workable policy
sometimes necessitates compromise.
Still, I for one am glad that they are
there, in the midst of government, to
represent not merely the views of the
church, but the compassionate ideals
of Christ. There are many Members of
different faiths, and of none, who are
motivated to work for a better society,
and we need need every one of them.
And this, I think, points to a more
important reason to have the right
people in the right government jobs, not
because they will make decisions which
agree with my personal political beliefs,
but that they genuinely care and believe
that they are using their influence to
work towards a more just and caring
society.
Andy Burrows
Men’s Breakfast
These informal social events are
organised by Welton and Dunholme
Methodist Church. They are open to
all men, whether churchgoers or not,
interested in a good breakfast and
meeting new friends. Usually we have a
speaker and on a variety of subjects. We
now meet at 8.45am and aim to finish
by approximately 10.15am. Men’s
breakfast is normally held on the third
Saturday of each month. The next one
will be on the 20th August. Anyone
interested, should contact John Ryland
(860823) or David Wilson (861461).

Temporary Bus Station
A leaflet has been taped to the bus shelter
on Welton Green and is available from
the Parish Office and council offices in
Lincoln.
It explains what will happen to the
buses as they go in and out of Lincoln
once the temporary bus station starts
operating from Tentercroft Street. There
isn’t actually a start date given for this in
the leaflet, but bus drivers have been told
the date of Sunday 14th August, or in
the case of Welton, Monday 15th as we
have no buses on Sunday. They admit
this may slip but it should definitely be
in operation by the end of the month.
People can get off all buses coming in
from the north of the city on Broadgate
as usual, and there is a free shuttle
service to take you across the railway
line to and from Tentercroft Street,
should you want to go to the station
itself, using the ticket you came in with.
The buses which pick up in Welton –
nos. 11, 12 and 53 – will use Stand I in
a row starting at A and going through
to P.
Most of the city centre bus stops will
not be in use, including those on Silver
new stop outside the entrance to the old
bus station on Broadgate. This is where
it is anticipated passengers travelling
on all outbound routes to the north of
the city will be picked up, including the
Welton services of nos. 11, 12 and 53.
Southbound passengers will be picked
up from opposite Debenhams on St.
Mark’s Street or the usual stop on the
High Street near the Court building.
The NEWS asked Stagecoach if we could
publish their leaflet but they refused,
saying that it was an interim publication
and a definitive one will be coming out
later.
Well, I did manage to keep a watchful
eye on the two chrysalis that were in
our new bug hutch. The first one to
emerge was a silver ‘Y’ moth which
took about an hour to sort itself out
and fly off; it is one of very few dayflying
moths that we have in the UK.
The second was another moth which
is named quite aptly as the ‘Orange
under wing’. As a furled up moth it is a
brown, speckly thing but when it opens
its wings it has beautiful bright orange
rear wings under the front wings; hence
its name.
Any form of study of moths can be
quite exasperating unless you intend
to collect samples, which is not
recommended as they disintegrate quite
quickly into a scaly dust. Another snag
is that there are thousands of species
and sub-species, and a lot come under
MSJs (middle sized jobs) as no-one has
managed to track down each and every
moth and give it a name or scientific
name. The larger moths are less of a
problem. The moon moth, the various
hawk moths, even as caterpillars, are
quite spectacular as they give an aura
of ‘keep off, don’t eat me’ by their
colouring and shapes. Some are hideous
and none can be called beautiful at the
larval or chrysalis stages. When they are
moths they have, in general, very short
lives. Their main object is to find a mate
so they have to look very attractive to
other moths of the same species but of
different sex, of course. Nothing mixed
up here about what gender they are.
Some of these moths have no mouth
parts to feed while some have proboscis
to feed with, but no mouth parts;
unlike their forever hungry caterpillars,
which tend to be eating machines. The
metamorphosis from egg to caterpillar
to chrysalis to moth is an amazing feat.
In each stage there is a sac or external
covering containing bodily fluids,
which changes to a chrysalis with even
more but different fluids, then when the
time is right those fluids emerge into
spectacular flying insects. The changes
are more than miraculous, if you have
time to stand and stare, or watch it on
YouTube as many do these days.
I am off on a short break down and
around the mid-west near to Shrewsbury
and Telford, where, rumour has it,
the local authorities have got their
heads together and have a contractor
that takes off the grass (and weed)
sward at the sides of the roads, all
of them twice in the season. The cut
vegetation is collected and taken to a
local biomass burner to make electricity
and a portion of the money made
from the process comes back to the
local authorities. What a good idea!
That guarantees a clean cut with no
mowings to block up the surface water
drains and the community gains by
getting some money back from the
scheme. No-one took up the idea of
planting roundabouts and grass verges
at junctions with wild flower seeds and
by reducing the number of mowings
making these junctions really beautiful
as they do in the Cotswolds. One small
area in Scothern has been seeded this
way. It will look a lot better after the
second seeding when it will sustain
itself as the Cotswold verges have done
now for some five years or more.
The William Farr Woods saga is still
very much on-going. There are many
voices in protest at what the school
has done and the general feeling is that
we have been robbed of a community
asset and a rural park and nature
reserve all in one. I am being helped
Dear Editor
Walking my dog, picking up after her
and binning it comes easy in Welton as
we are well provided for with the doggie
bins which have lids on to contain it
all.
Some of the doggie bins are right next
to the litter bins. I have noticed purely
by the terrible smell and flies gathering
round the litter bin, that there are a lot
of people not bothering to lift the lid on
the doggie bins and just putting the dog
bags in the litter bins.
Come on! You are good enough to clean
up after your dog so please put a lid on
it!
While I hope Emma Killjoy’s comment
regarding people’s bodies in summer was
written in jest, it saddens me to think
humour must be found at the expense
I don’t quite understand the need to
relocate our library. I assume that our
Co-operative shop is, notionally, the
common property of the individuals
who shop there and that the library
is a common service for much the
same people. Cannot we, the people,
tell our notional employees and actual
representatives to stop wasting their time
and our money creating more unsuitable
space and work out the added cost,
if any, for keeping things just as they
are? Unless, of course, someone had a
better use in mind for the existing space
occupied by the library, in which case I
must have missed the announcement.
Dear Editor
On 4th July, I attended a meeting of
West Lindsey District Council (WLDC).
In accordance with the provisions of the
council constitution I took advantage of
a little-used facility to put a question to
council. Questions have to be received a
week before the meeting, they have to be
less than a hundred words, and they are
distributed internally so that a response
can be formulated.
In my question, I pointed out that at the
extraordinary meeting of council on the
question of devolution, the leader of the
council had made reference to Cornwall
and Greater Manchester. I asked if this
was a sensible comparison in the context
of a Greater Lincolnshire. In his response
the leader denied making a comparison;
but went on to say that the Greater
Manchester authority was in receipt of
£11.78 per head of population, whilst
a Greater Lincolnshire would stand to
receive £13.63 per head of population.
As he saw it, this was a good deal for
Lincolnshire.
Welton NEWS
Under council procedure, the questioner
has no right of reply. However, if I had
been allowed to reply I would have pointed
out that the population of a Greater
Lincolnshire is just over one million, whilst
the population of Greater Manchester
is well over two and a half million. As
a consequence Greater Manchester will
receive £30 million a year, and a Greater
Lincolnshire will receive £15 million.
Is that really a better deal for Greater
Lincolnshire?
Greater Manchester is made up of ten
metropolitan boroughs of equal standing,
and has been evolving since 2011. Greater
Lincolnshire is made up of ten disparate
authorities which will continue to exist
as two unitary authorities, one county
council, one city council, one borough
council, and five district councils, which
are supposed to come together under an
elected mayor and cabinet in a matter of
months.
It is, of course a specious argument; but
if we follow the WLDC leader’s logic of
per capita values, West Lindsey would
be eligible for an investment of an extra
£1.2m per year; of which Gainsborough
would be eligible to receive an extra £300k
a year, and Welton would be eligible to
receive an extra £68k per year; rather less
than an elected mayor would expect to
receive.
Plans for the autumn fayre are now well
under way. At the time of writing we
still have a couple of tables to hire for
a cost of £10 each. These are for you
to sell your own items either for your
chosen charity or for yourself. If you
are interested please contact either Roy
Minnitt (860980) or myself (862570) as
soon as possible. We try to get a good
mix of outlets to give everyone a chance
to make sales and, for this reason,
Welton NEWS
anyone showing interest during August
will be contacted during September to
confirm whether or not we have a table
available for them. The only exclusions
are cake and food stalls as we have our
own cake stall and café to raise funds
for the PDA.
We are now looking for bric-a-brac,
books, CD’s and records along with
bottles for the bottle stall, tombola
items etc. Raffle tickets are now on
sale at the Health Centre dispensary,
Taylor’s Pet Foods and the Paper Shop
and from all PDA drivers and committee
members. We already have some
excellent prizes promised and more is
sure to follow. Among those already
donated are a handcrafted oak coffee
table, valued at £400, donated by Chris
Sharp Cabinets, a 42” HD TV donated
by Chestnut Homes Ltd, a starter fish
tank kit donated by Perry Aquatics of
Dunholme and a luxury food and drink
hamper. There is also afternoon tea for
two, whisky, hand crafted wooden salt
and pepper grinder; the list goes on.
We will be selling tickets on the ’flu
injection Saturday surgeries when the
dates are published so please bring some
money with you! We are also hoping to
be selling tickets in the Co-op during
September; date to be arranged.
We still have our eBay account selling
on our behalf so if you have anything
you think might be saleable and that
you would like to donate, please get in
touch.
Looking ahead, the PDA AGM will
be held on Thursday 27th October
starting at 7.30pm in the Health Centre
waiting room. There will be a short
business meeting during which the
committee for the coming year will be
elected. The various areas of the PDA,
financials, transport, fund raising etc
will each present a short report of the
Welton NEWS 17
previous twelve months business and
the audited accounts will be available to
view. We then have a short talk, usually
given by a doctor (more information in
September’s NEWS) and the evening
will end with tea, coffee and biscuits.
It would be really good to see a few, or
even a lot, of you there to show your
support for the PDA. The committee
works very hard in the background
providing support to the practice and
we would welcome as many as possible
to our AGM. The meeting usually lasts
around two hours.
Dates for your diary: Autumn Fayre,
22nd October; Christmas Lunch, 9th
December. These events all take place in
the village hall and more details will be
in future editions of the NEWS.
If you require any further information
on any of the above don’t hesitate to
give me a call.
Summer Reading Challenge
Organised by the Reading Agency (www.
readingagency.org.uk) and the UK public
library network since 1999, the Summer
Reading Challenge is the UK’s biggest
annual reading promotion for children
aged 4 to 11.
The Summer Reading Challenge offers
free access to books in the library during
the summer holidays. Throughout the
challenge, library volunteers will support
the children, helping them to discover
new authors and to explore a wide range
of different types of books and ways of
reading.
How does the challenge work? Children
sign up at the library and receive the
Big Friendly Read collector folder. They
can then borrow and read at least six
library books of their own choice during
the summer, collecting special cards to
complete their folder and rewards along
the way. Library volunteers are on hand
Money Matters
New State Pension
The state pension changed on 6th April
2016. If you reach state pension age on or
after that date, you’ll now receive the new
state pension under the new rules. The
aim of the new state pension is to make it
simpler to understand, but there are some
complicated changeover arrangements
which you need to know about if you’ve
already made contributions under the
previous system.
For many retired people, the state
pension forms the core of their retirement
income, together with any workplace or
personal pension provision that they
have. The new state pension is a regular
payment that you can claim if you reach
state pension age on or after April 2016.
You will receive the new state pension
if you’re eligible and a man born on or
after 6 April 1951, or a woman born
on or after 6 April 1953. If you reached
Welton NEWS 21
state pension age before 6 April 2016,
you’ll receive the state pension under
the old rules. You can still get a state
pension if you have other income such
as a personal pension or a workplace
pension.
The basic and additional state pensions
have been replaced by a flat-rate, singletier
new state pension with a full level
of £155.65 per week in 2016/17, and
depending on your personal circumstances
this may be subject to tax. Your national
insurance record is used to calculate your
new state pension, and you’ll usually
need ten qualifying years to get any new
state pension.
For ten years, at least one or more
of the following must have applied
to you: you were working and paid
national insurance contributions; you
were receiving national insurance credits,
for example, due to unemployment,
sickness or as a parent or carer; you
22
Welton NEWS
were paying voluntary national insurance
contributions.
If you’ve lived or worked abroad, you
may still be able to get some new state
pension. You may also qualify if you’ve
paid married women’s or widow’s
reduced rate contributions, but you’ll
need 35 qualifying years to get the full
new state pension.
The amount you receive can be higher
or lower depending on your national
insurance record, and it will only be
higher if you have over a certain amount
of additional state pension. You don’t
have to stop working when you reach
state pension age, but you’ll no longer
have to pay national insurance, and
you can also request flexible working
arrangements.
Deferring the new state pension means
that you may receive extra state pension
when you do claim it. The extra amount
is paid with your state pension (for
example, every four weeks) and may be
taxable. Deferring your state pension
could affect your other benefits and tax
credits. You’ll need to defer for at least
nine weeks –your state pension will
increase by 1% for every nine weeks you
put off claiming. This works out at just
under 5.8% for every full year you put
off claiming. After you claim, the extra
amount you get because you deferred will
usually increase each year. The rules for
deferring are the same if you live in the
EU and EEA, Gibraltar or Switzerland,
or a country with which the UK has a
social security agreement with.
There are different rules if you live in
another country. The extra amount you
get for deferring is calculated by taking
your state pension rate at the time you
reach state pension age, or when you
move abroad. The extra amount also
won’t increase after you claim. You can
claim your new state pension even if you
carry on working. However, you have
the option to defer which can increase
the amount you get. If you’re eligible
for a state pension from the Isle of Man,
you’ll need to claim it separately from
your new UK state pension.
On 6th April 2016, these rules changed so
that if you were contracted out you’ll no
longer be contracted out, and you’ll pay
more national insurance (the standard
amount).
The new system sees the end of the
additional state pension: the State Second
Pension (S2P) and the previous version,
the State Earnings-Related Pension
Scheme (SERPS). You should check your
previous payslips to see if you have
been contracted out. You will have been
contracted out if the national insurance
contributions line has the letter D or N
next to it, and remain contracted in if it
has a letter A. If there’s a different letter,
you should check this with your employer
or pension provider. You will have paid
national insurance at a lower rate if you
were contracted out. However, if you
Sundae Saturday
Warm but overcast, the odd droplet
of rain couldn’t stop the enjoyment of
Sundae Saturday at 16 Ryland Road on
16th July. There was a delightfully wide
range of gift and cake stalls as well as
tombola, face painting and guessing the
calories in a chocolate cake which the
latter promised to put 1,000 calories on
me just by looking at it. And when one
had finished browsing all the stalls there
was still time for a refreshing tea or some
cooling ice-cream.
The afternoon was organised by Linda
and Peter McCree assisted by their
friends at the Methodist Church and was
in aid of Action for Children, a children’s
charity committed to helping the most
vulnerable and neglected children and
young people so they can achieve their
full potential.
The ‘calorie cake’ was declared to
contain 12,953 calories and the prize for
guessing was won by Alun Evans. The
Welton NEWS
event raised £624, so thanks go to all
who helped and supported such a very
worthwhile cause.
Health Centre
Following recent feedback from patients
we would like to clarify the position re
our acute clinics which are held each
weekday morning. The doors open at
8am (this used to be later but was
changed as a result of feedback and
to allow patients to wait within the
building rather than outside). The clinic
does not start at 8am; doctors arriving
in the practice have to deal with test
results and other correspondence which
arrive electronically overnight and may
require urgent action before commencing
surgery.
These sessions commence at 8.30am
each morning and bookings are accepted
until 10am on a Monday and until
9.15am Tuesday to Friday. This facility
offers the opportunity to consult with
a clinician without the need to book
an appointment and is intended to deal
with acute problems and minor illnesses,
not on-going disease monitoring or
chronic conditions. If a patient attends
and is feeling very ill or has significant
pain the receptionist should be advised
immediately so that they can prioritise
care appropriately. Due to time pressures
it may not be possible to deal with more
than one problem and a booked slot is
advised if this is thought to be required.
Welton NEWS
Patients are allocated equally between
all clinicians working the acute clinic
and staff manage these lists to ensure
that delays are kept to a minimum. We
are unable to offer a choice of doctor
and if this is important then a booked
appointment should be made. Not all
doctors are available to consult at the
acute clinic but where possible if a female
or male is specifically requested we will
try and accommodate. Confusion can
occur when some patients appear to
walk straight in and see the doctor whilst
others have waited for some time but it is
important to note that pre-booked clinics
and nursing clinics are running alongside
this service and therefore some patients
are not booked into the acute clinic but
actually have an appointment slot.
We are aware that we cannot please
everyone but over the years we have
altered the timing and how we run these
clinics as a result of listening to what
patients ask for. We will continue to
consider all suggestions for improvement
and provide feedback as to whether
we are able to respond positively or
otherwise.
We are pleased to offer appointments
and advice for patients travelling abroad.
Some immunisations are available on
the NHS but others are only given on
a private basis and therefore a charge
will be made for these services. We are
Our Nurse Practitioner, Gillian Baker,
has decided to retire from the practice
spending some time doing all those things
she never found the time to do! Gill is
well known to many of our patients and
has been with the practice since joining
as a Practice Nurse in March 2001.
She has developed and defined her own
role, qualifying as a nurse practitioner
and independent prescriber, leading the
nursing team for many years, and has
worked tirelessly to raise standards and
improve the overall quality of care for
patients. Gill will be greatly missed by
patients and staff alike but we wish her
all the very best in her well-deserved
retirement.
ST. MARY’S CHURCH NEWS
Looks like rain!
“Yes, but you’re still charging £3.50 a
pint for it!” as the old gag goes. I know
we need the rain, but I am heartily fed
up with getting wet every time I venture
into the garden. The ‘Gardeners’ Hokee-
Kokee’ (you get your lawn-mower out,
you put your lawn-mower in; you know
the rest!) every time the heavens open
has lost its novelty value and the jungle
that was once the front lawn could
be hiding anything from giraffes to
dinosaurs, though mercifully the most
exciting critter discovered to date was a
large, slightly surprised, frog.
I enjoy my garden, though I wouldn’t
presume to call myself a gardener.
I’m more of a weed-worrier, but I can
dream. I sometimes think gardening
is God’s way of keeping me out of
trouble at weekends by finding work
for my idle hands before anybody else
does! Certainly gardening is the first
job mentioned in the Bible: The Lord
God took the man and put him in the
Garden of Eden to till it and keep it
(Genesis 2.15).
After a long day working in the garden,
there is something satisfying about
sitting on a bench, smelling the lavender
and listening to the bees. Sadly, as we
put up our brollies, yet again, we must
remember that our ‘green and pleasant
land’ is entirely dependent upon the
rain; without it, the wonderful green
spaces around us quickly become dry
and parched.
Mind you, it is possible to have far
too much of a good thing. Noah and
his family knew only too well the
devastation caused by ‘forty days and
nights’ of rain and I am certain that all
those elsewhere affected by the terrible
flooding of recent winters have a fair
idea, too. However, we can take heart
from Scripture. After the waters had
receded, leaving Noah literally ‘high
and dry’, God gave His unconditional
promise never again to flood the Earth:
“I establish my covenant with you, that
never again shall all flesh be cut off by
the waters of a flood, and never again
shall there be a flood to destroy the
earth.” (Genesis 9.11)
The rainbow, of course, serves to remind
us of that promise.
Water is absolutely vital - ask any
farmer - and so we should remember
to give thanks to God for both the rain
and the life that it brings. However, it
is also good to celebrate the beauty of
creation, which is all around us if only
we trouble to stop and look. We offer
thanks every autumn for our harvests,
ut what about the rest the year? God
has gifted us this beautiful place in
which to live, to sustain ourselves and
to enjoy; He knows our needs and He
provides for us. He has entrusted us
with His precious creation but our time
here is short and we should remember
that we are its stewards, not its owners.
We have a responsibility to God, to His
creation and to our own descendants
to use His gifts wisely; not to squander
them thoughtlessly, wantonly or
selfishly. The challenge to all of us is
to use God’s gifts as He intended, not
to waste them and ultimately, when
we are called home, to leave no lasting
mark other than in the memories of
those who have known us.
Have a nice summer. By the time you
read this I am sure everything will
have dried up, the sun will be out and
everybody will be moaning about the
heat! Meanwhile, I’m off to get the
washing in again.
God bless,
Babies and Buggies Service
Since January, St Mary’s Church has
been holding a monthly service for babies
and buggies; that is, a service for babies,
toddlers and their carers. The 30 minute
service, in an informal and child friendly
setting, has been great fun. The children
are free to run around and play with
their toys at the same time as the short
service takes place. The services, aimed
at both children and adults, started at the
beginning: God’s world; God’s creation.
The children were asked to help pin
pictures of animals, flowers and people
on a board representing the world.
We then followed our theme of God’s
world, God’s creation with the story of
Noah’s Ark, the children helping to pin
up pictures of the ark and the animals
entering two by two, together with
Noah’s family. This led into our theme
of the seeds, flowers and trees needed by
Noah to start again after the great flood.
The children then planted seeds to take
home to care for and nurture.
For the following three services we
explored people who help us and those
we help and how Noah’s family helped
after the flood. We discussed how those
around us provide us with care and
emotional support, our need to help each
other and how Jesus helps us. Having
previously explored people in our lives,
we looked at the tools they use and their
purpose. We then discussed the tools
God gives us to live our lives. From here
we discussed the actions of people and
how actions such as prayer can bring us
closer to Jesus. In all of these services the
children have been encouraged to take
part in practical activities.
Our July meeting was a teddy bears’
picnic which was fun and enjoyed by all.
We will be holding further services over
the next six months and the dates will be
published next month. I do hope you will
come and join us, whether young or not
so young. Everyone is welcome.
Hackthorn School
Some of you may remember a time when
summer was a time for outdoor activities
in fine weather in the run-up to the end
of the school year. Times have changed
in recent years and we now consider
ourselves very fortunate to enjoy school
sports day outside and on the day it was
originally planned. This year, despite the
best attempts of the weather, was one of
those increasingly, rare occasions. A great
time was had by all (although there were
one or two grown-ups who might have
something to say about that, after the
three legged race!).
Key Stage 2 celebrated the 400th
anniversary of one William, bard of
Stratford, by staging a production of
‘Shakespeare Rocks!’ to packed audiences
over two nights. In fact, we had to turn
people away on the second night, such
was the demand for last minute tickets
after some rave reviews of the first night
on social media! Funnily enough, the
weather managed to interfere on the
Welton NEWS 31
opening night, when an almost biblical
downpour attempted to drown out our
young thespians.
Once again, our children excelled at
welcoming the newcomers who arrived
on ‘move-up day’ when everyone had a
preview of next term and our ranks were
swelled by a larger than usual influx of
pre-schoolers, who were already looking
well settled in by the end of the day. One
of the highlights of their day was the
release of the newly hatched butterflies,
which key stage 1 had been looking after
as part of their learning about minibeasts.
And that’s what it’s all about: Nurture,
the last ‘letter’ of the ‘Hackthorn Way’, it
makes you feel safe, which helps you feel
confident and if you feel confident you
can achieve anything.
month, but there’s always the website:
July saw an exciting new venture for the
village hall as, for the first time, it was
transformed with internal drapes to make
it a stunning wedding venue.
With the help of Keymarque, a specialist
minor internal alterations to the building,
the village hall is now able to offer the
draping service at very competitive rates
for celebrations of all kinds. The photo on
page 33 demonstrates the transformation
that can be achieved; all the style of an
outdoor venue with all the benefits of
staying indoors. Of course, the village
hall also offers excellent parking for those
who need it, village centre convenience for
local guests and the knowledge that the
proceeds go to supporting an important
village asset. If you have a family ‘do’
Welton NEWS
The village hall’s importance to Welton
is clear but the Trustees were slightly
bemused recently by the parish council’s
application to register it as a community
asset with West Lindsey District Council,
effectively putting a local charge on the
property. In principle the community asset
registration procedure is an important
measure to protect community buildings
and open spaces that might otherwise
be sold off for other uses, but neither
the trustees nor Community Lincs, the
umbrella group for village halls in the
county, can see a clear rationale for its
application to a property that is owned
under trust for community use and whose
use is carefully controlled. The trustees
are seeking further information from the
parish council as to what it hoped to
achieve.
Don’t forget; the village hall is your
building. There’s lots going on there for
everyone but still space and time for
anything new you might have planned.
LIVES First Responder
I recently attended a meeting with a
responder from another group who had
attended a 999 call made by a young
child in respect of their parent who was
suffering an emergency health problem.
The child did have the majority of the
details in this instance but if you are
a parent, or look after someone else’s
children, it’s worth asking if they would
be able to provide the same for you.
Often adults with an underlying health
condition such as asthma, diabetes or
the like do ensure their children know
how to call for help and what details
may be needed. If this is you, have you
thought about this?
But of course it’s not just those with
a known condition; circumstances can
dictate that the unexpected can occur
to anyone. So do you care for a young
child that one day may need to get care
for you, would they know who to phone
Welton NEWS
and how to do it? Would they know
your proper name, not just mummy or
daddy or granny/granddad? Would they
know the address or at least be able to
give general details of where they are? If
you have a health problem, would they
know when you are in trouble and when
to phone and what to tell the emergency
services?
Just some food for thought, as clearly
you would want to avoid causing
unnecessary concern, but a clear and
factual discussion may be a good starting
point based on your knowledge of the
child or children involved.
Finally this month: a thank you goes to
all those who leave their change in one
of our collecting tins around the village.
The pennies and pounds add up over the
year and I am now able to get foreign
coins changed, some of which I find in
the tins, so further adding to our funds.
Advertising
The Welton NEWS is a great way to
get your message across to a wide and
growing readership. Unlike some other
publications that go straight into the bin
because they contain little of interest,
the Welton NEWS is widely read and
adverts are noticed and remembered.
So if you are in business and want
to increase your sales why not use
an outlet that gives real value for
money and where you can be confident
that your advert will be noticed. You
can advertise in the Welton NEWS
for as little as £5.25 a month. To
Affordable homes support
LOCALITY (the national network
of community-led organisations) and
NALC (National Association of Local
Councils) are urging local (parish and
town) councils to help tackle the housing
crisis by encouraging local communities
to build their own homes.
A new scheme, called the Early Stage
Support Programme, http://locality.
org.uk/projects/communityled-housing/
early-stage-support/ has been launched
by LOCALITY using funding from
the Nationwide Foundation, which will
assist 22 groups with starting up their
own community-led housing projects to
provide affordable homes for locals.
NALC is urging town and parish councils,
if they are aware of such local interest,
to encourage any community groups to
apply for the grant programme, which
will provide one-to-one assistance from
experts and guidance on such things as
choosing what type of legal structure is
best to carry a project forward and how
to seek further funding.
If you know of such a group in your
community, or have been working
closely with local residents on the need
for more affordable local housing, please
point them in the direction of the links
above. The deadline for applications for
this grant pot is 12th August 2016.
Talent on display at
William Farr
Last month art and photography A
Level students at William Farr held their
annual end of year exhibition. A total of
23 students exhibited their work, which
demonstrated skills acquired in a range
of media and materials over the two
years of their course. The end of term
also marks an important milestone for
their teacher, Christiane Mochan, who
will be retiring from teaching after 39
years (see photo on page 40).
Christiane told me that the course
requires students to hone their basic
skills in painting and drawing but also
encourages them to experiment. A
number of the pieces took inspiration
from contemporary artists and
craftspeople and Christiane explained
that students are encouraged, wherever
possible, to make contact with other
artists and to make use of their advice
and guidance. In the end, though, the
work must be identifiably that of the
student, demonstrating their own take
on what they have learned.
While a number of the students are hoping
to go on to further art-related studies,
some will be moving on to university
courses in other disciplines. Christiane
believes that, for these students, studying
art at A level will bring important benefits.
She said that the study and practice of art
uses different parts of the brain; there
are no right or wrong answers but the
emphasis is on developing the students
and their ideas. The course provides a
platform for them to form their own
thoughts and to express them, important
skills in any discipline.
Christiane said that she had seen many
developments in the teaching of art during
her career, probably the most significant
being the introduction of the national
curriculum which had the positive effect
of putting more emphasis on including
the work of artists and craftspeople in
the course. Initially, the curriculum laid
down how art and design should be
taught but this had become less rigid over
time, while still retaining the benefits.
Christiane will be returning to William
Farr next term on a part-time basis but
hopes that she will now have more time
for her own artistic development.
Merry Macs of Lincoln is a group
of volunteers whose aim is to raise
funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
We are authorised by the charity
(registered number 261017) to do so.
To date the group has raised in excess of
£120,000 and we are very proud of our
achievement.
In line with the country’s desire to assist
with protecting our environment, we have
been using ‘green’ methods of promoting
our events as possible. We are holding an
event on Saturday 3rd September as part
of a folk festival in St Mark’s Square.
We are encouraging children aged nine
and upwards to get involved. They can
take part as a family, as a school or any
other group they are associated with.
There are trophies for the top three in
each age category and prizes for the
first places in each category. The prizes
are vouchers for either Debenham’s or
Lakeland. Hopefully this notice will
allow children to focus on something
during the summer.
Matt’s Fund
In July we attended the inaugural
Melanoma Patients Conference
in Bristol. Imogen Cheese put
this together, herself diagnosed
with a melanoma, bringing
together patients, medics, researchers and
drug companies. The conference gave an
opportunity for updating knowledge and
networking, but more importantly gave a
forum for discussion between those
diagnosed with this particular form of skin
cancer.
It’s a pity it has taken a voluntary organisation
with support from independent charities
to arrange such a meeting, there being
no ‘national’ health service/governmentled
commitment to create a coordinated
approach to support those diagnosed with
this disease.
It is clear that up to 85% of malignant
melanoma are cured through surgery. This
demonstrates that early identification is the
key, not only to remove the problem and
save lives, but also to reduce costs to the
NHS.
Welton NEWS
It was coincidental that on the same day
NICE (The National Institute for Health
and Care Excellence) approved the use of
a combination of two drugs for late stage
melanoma. These drugs (Ipilimumab &
Nivolumab) work with the immune system,
having been used separately for a few years;
trials on a combination of the two have
shown a high level of success in shrinking
and even eradicating tumours. These will
now be available for those diagnosed with
late stage melanoma nationally.
‘Some moles are dangerous’; if you see any
changes in shape, colour and size, or a new
mole developing get it looked at.
Welton NEWS
So far this year, police and trading
standards officers have visited more than
150 residents from across the county,
whose names are known to scammers
as being people who they believe can
be conned easily into parting with
their cash. Officers are working hard
to warn them of the dangers and help
them spot the warning signs. They are
also encouraging people to share their
knowledge and experiences of scams in
a bid to raise awareness of the types of
scams operating in their area, and reduce
the number falling victim to them.
Kirsty Toyne, officer at Lincolnshire
Trading Standards, says, “Getting caught
out by a scam can feel embarrassing, but
it’s surprising how many people get
caught out on a daily basis. Whether
it’s a letter offering you a cash prize in
bogus phone call from someone claiming
to be from a reputable organisation, a
can happen to anyone. So whether you’ve
has, we want you to come forward and
share your stories. Let others who have
been scammed know they aren’t alone,
and help us stop it from happening to
more people by raising awareness.”
Follow the top tips below to spot a
scam artist. A scammer may: contact
you out of the blue; make promises that
sound too good to be true - if something
sounds too good to be true it probably
is; ask you to pay for something up-front
- for example, they’ll ask you to pay
a fee before you can claim a prize;
ask you to make a quick decision by
saying things like ‘if you don’t act now
you’ll miss out’. This puts you under
pressure and doesn’t give you time to
think; be over-familiar and over-friendly
with you; tell you an offer has to be
kept secret; ask for your bank account
details. Never give your bank details
to people you don’t know, especially
people you meet online. For more advice
Rainbows -1st Welton
Well another year has passed; the girls
have had lots of fun, learnt new skills,
made new friends and have made some
excellent crafts.
We have four Rainbows leaving us and
commencing with Brownies in September.
We wish Millie, Lily, Abbie and Abbie lots
of new adventures and fun; they will all
be brilliant Brownies. It is always very sad
when Rainbows leave us, especially when
we have seen them develop so much over
the previous two years, but it is always
rewarding to see them start Brownies
and have the confidence to begin a new
challenge.
Harmony Lincs
Barbershop Chorus
Our main chorus is recognised these days
as a forty-strong group but we also attract
bookings for a smaller chorus, ideal for
smaller venues and special occasions.
We were delighted to take part in a live
music event, ‘Party in the Car Park’, at
The Fox and Hounds in Reepham in
June and, more recently, to provide the
entertainment for a wedding reception in
Branston Hall.
Welton NEWS
Looking ahead we have two special
events coming up. Our ‘Learn to Sing in
Harmony’ course starts on Tuesday 13th
September and continues on 20th and
27th September and 4th October. The
course will be held at the Priory City of
Lincoln Academy, Skellingthorpe Road,
Lincoln, LN6 0EP. Each week the course
will run from 7.30 to 8.30 pm. Full
details are available on our website. You
can register by emailing Richard Marriott
at bretcot@tiscali.co.uk or by contacting
Steve Bradley on 01522 682622.
On Friday 18th November we stage our
‘Voices in Harmony’ show at the Terry
O’Toole Theatre in North Hykeham.
This will showcase our full chorus
who are really looking forward to the
event following their recent success
in the National Barbershop Chorus
Championships.
We are delighted to confirm that two of
the top quartets in the country will be
joining us that evening ensuring the very
best in four-part harmony singing. They
are ‘Finest Hour’, who were crowned
national quartet champions in May and
‘Emerald Guard’ who were previous
winners of the title. Tickets will be on
sale from the Terry O’Toole Theatre box
office from early September.
The Jambusters WI
You may well have seen small groups
of ladies dashing round the village
or peering in your garden in early
July, all was a result of Jambuster
members being Dunholme’s answer to
Miss Marple. Top marks were awarded
to the winning team ‘The Drunkards’
but the mystery of the elusive oak leaf
remains to be solved.
Our return to the school hall was met
with ‘hearty’ refreshments courtesy of
our fabulous refreshment fairies. Helen
Airey was awarded top marks for her
box to truly treasure winning the ‘Just
for a Giggle’ competition and Philippa
being the jubilant prize draw winner.
Congratulations and thanks were
given to Emma Hackney and Sara
celebrate with a fun night with treats to
eat and lots of group games. Let’s hope
the weather is kind to us so we can go
This term we have celebrated Father’s
how to paddle a canoe. A good night was
had by all who went.
We finish on 18th July and will restart
in September. We wish you all a happy
holiday and look forward to seeing you
in September for the new term.
The aim in the short term is to build
the new kitchen adding new units and
accessories. Decoration around the old
school already started over the past twelve
months and is ongoing with the main hall
being one of the next areas to be tidied
up and redecorated. Following that, a
smaller meeting room to the rear will be
decorated, units removed and hopefully
before long a new carpet fitted. This room
will then become available for letting as a
room for small meetings. The ladies’ toilets
have been redecorated and modernised
with two new cubicles and in the near
future the gents’ toilets will have replaced
sanitary ware etc.
In the main hall we will make a doorway
through to the corridor to the toilets. This
will eliminate the need to pass through the
kitchen to get to the toilets. In the past this
was a disruption to those working in the
kitchen area but all will be plain sailing
when the new door is fitted.
happening at the Old School Centre. I
Des’s Corner
In court, a lorry owner’s sharp solicitor
was questioning a farmer. “Didn’t you
say to the police at the scene of the
accident, ‘I’m fine?’ asked the solicitor.
“Well,” said the farmer “I’ll tell you
what happened. I’d just loaded my
favourite cow, Bessie, into the….” “I
didn’t ask for any details.” the solicitor
interrupted, “Just answer the question.
Did you not say, at the scene of the
accident, ‘I’m fine!’?”
The farmer replied, “Well, I’d just
got Bessie into the trailer and I was
driving down the road.... ” The solicitor
interrupted, “Your Honour, I am trying
to establish the fact that, at the scene
of the accident, this man told the police
that he was fine. Now weeks after the
accident, he is suing my client. I believe
he is a fraud. Please tell him to simply
answer the question.”
Welton NEWS 53
However, the Judge was fairly interested
in the farmer’s answer and said “I’d
rather like to hear what he has to
say about his favourite cow, Bessie.”
The farmer thanked the Judge and
proceeded. “Well, I had just loaded
Bessie, my favourite cow, into the trailer
and was driving her down the road
when this huge lorry came thundering
through a stop sign and hit my trailer.
I was thrown into one ditch and Bessie
was thrown into the other. I was hurt,
very bad like, and didn’t want to move.
However, I could hear old Bessie
moaning. I knew she was in terrible pain
by her groans. Then a policeman on a
motorbike turned up. He could hear
Bessie groaning too, so he went over to
her. After he looked at her, and saw her
condition, he took out a gun and shot
her between the eyes. Then he came
across, gun still in hand, looked at me,
and said, ‘How are you feeling?’ Now,
your honour, what would you say?”
Council Meeting
County Councillor Sue Rawlins advised
the parish council that progress was being
made on the IT problems at Lincolnshire
the situation was expected to be presented
West Lindsey Community Police Inspector
attended the council meeting at the
invitation of the council. The Chairman of
the Parish Council, Dick Pikett, outlined a
number of the council’s concerns regarding
the effectiveness of policing in the parish,
especially in relation to vandalism at
Manor Park and the golf club and vehicles
speeding in the village. He called for a
more pro-active police response to these
problems and for a more visible police
presence in the village.
The police regarded the problem at the
golf club as an isolated incident where
the perpetrators had been identified and
dealt with. Other incidents were random
and were dealt with when culprits were
identified. Unfortunately anti-social
behaviour will always occur and is
constantly changing as youths grow out of
this phase of their lives. Lincolnshire police
prided itself on being the lowest cost force
in the country but now suffers from further
reduced funding from central government.
Policing in Lincolnshire is considered to
be very efficient relative to other forces
in the country. Crime has also changed in
recent times with more resources focused
on areas such as cybercrime. Police
manpower is therefore focused on areas
of relatively high incidence of crime and
Welton is, thankfully, an area of very low
crime. All of this results in lower levels of
policing for Welton.
One councillor had recently resigned
from the council. The resignation had
was an ‘offer of resignation’ only. Standing
Orders were suspended to allow a fuller
debate on the issue. The councillor who
had resigned had taken on a commitment
to save public expense for a forthcoming
event. It was argued that the resignation
came as a result of councillors not
identifying and supporting the councillor
when it became apparent that she could
no longer meet the commitment when the
remit had been expanded to where it had
become untenable. It was proposed that
the council write a letter apologising for its
lack of support and asking the councillor
to reconsider her offer of resignation.
It was argued that as the process of
resignation had been completed such a
letter would be an anomaly. The council
voted to send the letter.
was questioned, and one councillor argued
that there had been no minutes of any
previous council meeting authorising any
expenditure for the twinning event other
than that for the marquee for the football
celebration. Some councillors recalled
discussions on such expenditures but the
question of the minutes was not resolved.
A budget of £550 was authorised to cover
the shortfall.
The council decided not to provide input
to the consultation on the scheme for a
‘mayoral combined authority’ for Greater
Lincolnshire; councillors were left to
provide any input on a personal basis.
LCC have advised that street lighting will
to the previously proposed ‘lights out’
time of 10pm.
There is no parish council meeting in
August. The next meeting is on Monday
12th September at 7.30pm in the library.
This year we need to raise over £4.4
million to enable us to continue to deliver
these services. Our sincere thanks go to
members of the local community who
support us in so many ways: donating
prizes, attending events, organising their
own events in support of the hospice
and volunteering their time with us.
My role includes the delivery of talks
to community groups, schools and
organisations to raise awareness of our
work and services. If this is of interest to
your group I would be delighted to come
along and talk about what we do.
Star Walks On Saturday 17th September,
the hospice is seeking some brave Jedi
Knights to join in a quest to walk 10k
across the ‘Lincoln galaxy’ to raise
money. Participants will start the 10k
walk at Yarborough Leisure Centre
where they will be greeted by favourites
from the film and they can warm up
with some Jedi training. There will also
be free food after the walk with guests
treated to Han Solo halloumi baps or a
Padmé pork bap courtesy of Meltworks,
the local Lincolnshire outdoor caterers.
which last year was themed ‘One Night
Welton Golf Society
Twenty-five members and seven guests
crossed the Humber to play at Hessle
Golf Club (it’s nowhere near Hessle).
After some disappointing bacon butties
the day improved dramatically. The
Welton NEWS
weather was kind to us and the course
was picturesque and in good condition.
Some of the greens were challenging and
three or four puts weren’t uncommon.
One of our new (younger) members
James Denbury (JD) was victorious
with 35 points. Steve Armstrong was
second on 33 points and Alan Pretty
third on 30 points. There were some
very poor scores; yours truly included.
Tom Allen won nearest the pin on the
very tricky 16th.
Fred Sweeting beat Roger Champion
on the 18th in the preliminary round
of the knock-out. I was witness to this
momentous event. They only halved
one hole, the 17th, where Fred recorded
an 8 and Roger a 9 with a shot. Good
luck to whoever meets Fred in the next
round.
We are not sure as we go to press
where we are playing in August.
Football Club
Most teams are now in the middle of
their well-deserved summer break but
many mangers will already be putting
in place their plans for next season. Any
new players wishing to join a new team
should visit the club website: weltonfc.
com, and contact the appropriate
manager.
One additional piece of good news was
received at the fixtures night at Newark
on 7th July where the U9 Bombers were
told they had been promoted to the A
League next season. Matt Wilson, the
U9 coach, said that despite only playing
non-competitive development football
this promotion was in recognition of
the boys’ terrific season. Matt and
Matt Faers would like to thank all
the parents, families and the team’s
sponsor, Denholm Industrial Services
Limited, for their incredible continued
support. They really could not have
done it without them (especially Tash
and Carol); onwards to next season!
A final reminder for the village
celebrations planned for the August
Bank Holiday. It all starts with a junior
disco on Friday evening, then fun and
games at Manor Park all Saturday,
Welton NEWS 59
followed by a hog roast and a band for
the adults in the evening. Full details are
on page 5.
Finally the club secretary, Stuart Hogg,
organises a Welton FC fantasy football
league every year which can be accessed
through your iPhone app or online.
Stuart will be running it again through
the Premier League’s website. It was a
great success last season with 25 people
taking part. For those who haven’t done
it before, you are given a budget at the
beginning of the season and you choose
a squad of any of the Premier League
players with a maximum of three from
any one team. Each player in your team
accumulates points for goals scored,
clean sheets kept, assists, etc, and you
choose a captain each week whose
points count double. You are allowed
one transfer each week. The winner last
season was Lee Hepworth, followed by
Sean King, Stuart Hogg, Adi Smith and
Carl Wilson. Registration is usually mid-
August, and is free to join. It is open to
anyone who would like to participate;
the more the merrier. If you would like
to join, please email Stuart at stuart.
hogg65@gmail.com and he will send
you the code to register in the league.
Welton Bowls Club
In the blink of an eye another month
has passed us by; at this rate we will
soon be thinking about Christmas.
The club will be taking part in the
Christmas tree spectacular which will be
held in St Mary’s church on 26th/27th
November.
August sees the last full month of
the outdoor season and a number of
our members will be thinking about
returning to the indoor rinks to play
during the winter but, before that
happens, we still have a number of
games to complete the outdoor season.
The club has reached the semi-final of the
Eileen Wilmott Shield so we are hoping
for a good result in this competition.
We played this on 22nd July so I’ll give
the result in the September edition of
the NEWS. We also have some of our
members playing in other West Wold
competitions so we wish them well and
Welton NEWS
hope they progress further and make
it to the finals. Also being played in
July was the club singles and on the
31st July we played the club pairs; the
results of which will also be given in the
September edition.
We have had a slow start to the season,
not managing outright wins but picking
up the odd couple of points from games.
We are not at the bottom of the league
but not at the top either. It is hoped that
as we completed the rest of our games
in July and August we will produce
some good results, allowing us to move
further up the league table. Final league
places will be given in a later issue of
the NEWS.
We still have a few places left in our
Open Day three-wood pairs competition
which we will be holding on 4th
September. If you wish to play in this
event please give the undersigned a
call to book your place. Let’s hope
the weather will be good to us on the
day. This is a popular event, and we
also hold a raffle on the day with some
excellent prizes, so if you are around
Manor Park that day why not drop in
and buy a ticket. You never know; you
could be lucky. The money raised is put
back into the club as it is not cheap to
keep the green and surrounds looking
good.
So far we have been lucky with the
weather. We only had to re-arrange a
couple of our games due to the rain.
Most of our matches have been played
in quite pleasant weather which is how
bowls should be played (in the sunshine);
let’s hope the weather remains good for
the rest of the outdoor season.
As always we would love to see some
new faces in the club, so if you fancy
giving the game a try then please give the
undersigned a call so we can arrange to
meet at the green. It is not an energetic
Will you be able to enjoy financial security in
retirement? Will your pension arrangements provide
sufficient income? Are you paying too much in
charges? How will the new pension rules affect you?
We are pension specialists and can help you answer
all of these questions.

• Are you concerned about Inheritance Tax?
• Why pay more than you need to?
• Ensure your inheritance goes to those you intend it to.
The value of investments and pensions and the income
less than you invested.
