Dear Members and Supporters 

A warm welcome to Southend from the Essex 

Riviera. Forty years ago when playing there, 

I had to change under the Southend FC stand, 

walk across the road to the park and play on a 

pitch that had been regularly used by selfish dog 

walkers! It was never a pleasant experience, nor 

for that matter was the game as we always lost. 

Southend were and still are a very difficult team 

to beat. So – good luck Cambridge boys today.

you to all the usual volunteers, match officials 

and players. The mini section hosted a successful 

tournament last weekend and thanks to Dave 

Chapman for organizing this. 

Also today the Exiles are playing Shelford 

3rds in the Cambridgeshire Intermediate Cup 

Final at 4pm at Cambourne. So if anyone wants 

to watch and support them, they will have to get 

a move on. 

Last week at Old Redingensians we had an 

excellent game against a very determined and 

good side. Although the result was never in 

doubt, they did have us worried at times. The 

referee in my opinion refereed very well and fair. 

Today we welcome Power2Inspire, a charity 

established by John Willis (one of our enthusiastic 

supporters and a debenture holder). Born without 

fully formed limbs, John set up the charity to 

promote Inclusion through Sport. 

They deliver “PowerHouse Games”, mini school 

sports days using Inclusion and Adapted sports to 

bring disabled and non-disabled pupils together. 

To fund these Games John has taken on his biggest 

challenge to date – JohnsRoad2Rio – in which he 

will participate in all 34 Olympic and Paralympic 

sports. Today he will be attempting to kick a ball 

over the goalposts at half time. Please be generous 

and support him. 

We now have 3 more games this season, and 

if we win 2, we are definately in with promotion 

hopes. Should we win all 3 then will be playing 

in the league above. So support vocally, sensibly 

and respect the match officials. 

In the morning of the final game of the season 

there is a Presidents XV v Barstools – KO 11.30am, 

as a memorial game for Shaun Gadsby. There will 

be at least 60 men playing in this game including 

me in a tribute to Shaun. Most will have played 

here in the last 40 years, so come early and catch 

up with some old friends.

Those of you lucky enough to be playing will know that our 

changing facilities have fallen a little behind the standards that we 

set ourselves. We currently have only two indoor changing rooms 

supplemented by the temporary port-a-cabins together with 

shared showering facilities. 

Now that we are running 4 teams on a Saturday, with our ever 

growing Mini & Youth membership, the growth in women’s rugby 

and with the objective of bringing girls rugby to Volac Park and the 

increased use of our club house by many in our local community, 

we need to provide facilities that are fit for purpose – and are safe! 

Thanks to a number of club members providing their professional 

expertise, we have designed a scheme to refurbish the existing 

facilities and provide up to 6 new changing rooms in two phases: 

• The first phase provides for the refurbishment of two existing 

changing rooms, the provision of four new changing rooms, 

gym, physio room and additional WC facilities. 

• The second phase would add two more changing rooms and a 

Multi-purpose room. 

We have obtained planning permission from Cambridge City 

Council and now need to move on to the hard part. As you would 

imagine all of this is going to cost a significant amount of money, we 

will try and do as much of the work as we can ourselves but we still 

estimate that Phase 1 alone will cost around £700,000. 

We have been very fortunate to be awarded £200,000 from 

Cambridge City Council under their Section 106 facilities funding 

scheme and are talking to the Rugby Union about grant funding and 

a loan. But the most we are likely to raise from these sources is 

around half of the total cost so we will need to talk to a number of 

other benefactors to raise the remainder. 

We are having a major fund raising drive which will start during 

the 2015/2016 season with the aim of starting to build Phase 1 in 

early 2017 to be completed by the start of season 2017/2018. 

This is a major project for the club and vital to our future so any 

help that you can give either with the project itself or in helping 

to raise the money to complete the project do please get in touch 

with me.

Thre3 is the magic number… 

Last time out here it was 5ive. This time, 

it’s the power of thre3. And that’s as close 

as I’d like it to be after a hard-fought win at 

Redingensians at the weekend. With OAs 

kicking off later, and subsequently delayed 

by traffic issues en route to Clifton, they 

always knew what they had to do and there 

was, therefore, little chance of them slipping 

up. We, on the other hand, had it all to do 

against the form team in National Two South 

to maintain that fiv3 point lead with thre3 

games left. 

There may have been thre3 hat tricks 

against the Cornish All Blacks (one of 

them turned into a fiv3!) but there was 

little chance of that against a team that had 

won 7even on the spin. They scored first, 

we replied through George Bretag-Norris 

and went ahead just on half time via Albert 

Portsmouth. The third, from Steve Hipwell, 

broke Redingensians spirit for the most part, 

although they did score again, but number 

four (from Mike Ayrton) and the fifth (from 

Jarrod Taylor) put paid to any chance of 

anything other than 5ive points. 

Most colours can be mixed from just 

thre3 primary colours. But different primary 

colours are used for different purposes. 

For example, all the colours you see on 

a television screen are mixtures of red, 

green and blue light. With paint you can 

mix most colours from just red, yellow and 

blue pigments. The colours in books and 

magazines are usually printed from three 

coloured inks: cyan, magenta and yellow, 

although black ink is used as well. We use 

three primary colours because of the way 

our eyes work. At the back of our eyes 

are cells called cones which are sensitive 

to coloured light. There are thre3 different 

types of cone, each sensitive to different 

wavelengths of light. If our eyes were built 

differently and we had four types of cone 

cell, we would need to use four primary 

colours in printing, painting and television. 

The only colours we’re concerned with for 

the next thre3 games are Blood, Sand and 

Black. Our destiny is in our own hands. 

The letters A, F, H, K, N, Y and Z are all 

made up of three lines. Only N appears 

in Southend – A if you pronounce it as it’s 

oft spoken – but I’m reaching at this stage. 

Our visitors today also have thre3 games 

left to hold on to their National Two status, 

being second bottom as we approach this 

afternoon. Thre3 times 5ive is fifteen – the 

number of points available to them and the 

number of points they are from safety. They 

will not go quietly into the bottom thre3 at 

the end of term (and there are, by the way, 

thre3 of those in a school year). 

Once upon a time there were three little 

pigs... there were also three billy goats 

gruff... stories often begin this way and have 

a similar structure. Number one and number 

two are always similar so the listener is 

lulled into believing number thre3 will be the 

same. But with number thre3 there is often 

a twist in the tale. Not always, though – all 

thre3 mice were blind. And taking particular 

care to do the job right over the next thre3 

games is essential. 

Oaths are traditionally repeated three 

times. COYBAS! COYBAS! COYBAS!

Cambridge U14s and U15s Tour to Toulon... 

The Toulon tour came at last. After 

several failed attempts in previous 

seasons it materialised this year as an 

effort shared with the U14s. 

We left Stansted on a very foggy day, 

Friday the 11th March and landed in 

Marseille. After a one hour bus drive, 

we arrived at our accommodations at 

Le Centre Azur in Sanary-sur-Mer. In 

the early evening we drove to Toulon to 

meet our first opponents: Mourillon. The 

two teams played at Stade Fernandez 

under flood lights on an artificial pitch, 

both age groups being composed of 

many who had not experienced a tour 

before. The opposition were tough, 

very disciplined, and showed great 

sportsmanship throughout, this being 

perhaps surprising to many of the 

players due to the surrounding area. The 

referee, barely the age of our players, 

kept the game well under control 

and was arguably one of the best we 

have had all season, regardless of the 

language barrier. The U15s were under 

heavy pressure for most of the game but 

were able to clinch a 12–7 victory, thanks 

to two tries from Matt Robinson who 

was then chosen as man of the match. 

The game was followed by a buffet and 

a visit to the beer shed for the parents. 

The following day it was very sunny, a 

welcome change from the usual British 

spring weather. After a short night for 

some, we were driven to St-Mandrier for 

a game against Val d’Issole. Before the 

games the national anthems were played. 

Our U15s had a great display with 

around ten tries to two. Ted Watts 

was man of the match with three tries 

scored. Again, our opponents were 

strong and played good rugby. As usual, 

the hospitality was fantastic and we 

were offered another buffet. 

The afternoon was spent for most 

of us simply sitting on the beach, with 

some players venturing so far as to take 

a dip in the sea, even with our weather it 

was very cold. However a few preferred 

to stay in the café and watch Ireland – 

Italy and avoid the sun! 

Later in the afternoon we came back 

to Toulon to watch England-Wales and 

have dinner at La Tulipe Noire. A few 

boys had the pleasure to chat with Delon 

Armitage while he sat at the terrace 

among other players. We then walked 

to Stade Mayol to see Toulon-Grenoble. 

The atmosphere was incredible with the 

Pilou-Pilou and other RCT traditions. 

Afterwards, the bus was filled with chants 

from the boys, one of which detailing 

how a certain Mathieu Bastareaud gave 

the boys a nod as the game was paused. 

The last day was a training session 

with Leigh Halfpenny at Le Castellet. 

The players enjoyed it tremendously 

and had the opportunity of a questionsanswers 

session, before jumping at 

the opportunity to have the Wales 

international’s signature. 

As a departure gift, we were offered a 

buffet of local products. 

Thanks to Richard, Tom Whitford, 

Leigh Halfpenny, Fred our main 

translator and all the Toulon parents, we 

had an unforgettable tour. A big thanks 

too to Mojo and Gordon in Cambridge 

without whom the Tour wouldn’t have 

happened.
