Millis Waives Right of First
Refusal on Glen Ellen Property
78 of 230 Acres to Be Preserved as Open
Space through Mass. Chapter 61B
By David Pasquantonio
After a town-wide open
hearing on February 10, the
Millis Board of Selectmen
waived the town’s right to purchase
a portion of the Glen
Ellen property, and the site
continues on track for purchase
by Toll Brothers to develop
a 324-unit senior residential
community.
“The question we are faced
with tonight is one of great
On February 10, Millis waived its right of first refusal to purchase
the 230-acre Glen Ellen Country Club property from Corcoran
Dennison, 223 acres of which are located within Millis. That step
puts the property back on track for purchase by Toll Brothers,
which plans a a 324-unit senior residential community on the site.
strategic importance to the
town,” Selectman James Mc-
Caffrey said as the meeting
opened, listing open space purchases
the town had previously
approved. “This would be the
largest housing development in
the history of this town.” He
also noted the impact that the
development would have on
neighboring towns and Millis
abutters to the property.
Under a state regulation
called Chapter 61B, property
owners — in this case,
Corcoran Jennison, the current
owners of Glen Ellen
— can designate a portion
of their land as recreational
in exchange for a lower tax
rate on that acreage. However,
when that acreage comes
under future agreement to be
sold, a town can match the
purchase and sale price and
buy the land. The portion of
Glen Ellen covered by Chapter
61B is under a sales agreement
for $13 million, and that
is the amount the town would
musical Bye Bye, Birdie on Friday,
March 4 and Saturday, March 5
at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March
Over 50 Medway High
as cast members, dance ensemble,
production crew and pit
band. Bye Bye, Birdie is a musical
comedy centered around the arrival
of Elvis-inspired rock star
Conrad Birdie to Sweet Apple,
Ohio. He has just been drafted
into the army and will bestow his
“One Last Kiss” on teen fangirl,
Kim MacAfee, on the beloved
Ed Sullivan Show. The high
profile kiss causes mixed feelings
for Kim’s steady, Hugo Peabody,
as well as her parents Doris and
Harry MacAfee. The show, with
music by Charles Strouse and lyrics
written by Lee Adams is full
of energy, comedy and romance.
It features popular 1950’s musical
numbers “Put on a Happy
Face,” “A Lot of Livin’ To Do”
and “Telephone Hour” which
recalls a time when teens actually
talked on the phone.
The show features an array of
characters, including Conrad’s
longtime girlfriend/secretary,
Rose Alvarez. Their publicity
have had to pay to purchase the
property. The agreement would
have cost Millis anywhere from
$17 million to $20 million, depending
on the length of financing
and secured interest rate. In
addition, if Millis had exercised
its right to purchase the acreage,
the town would have had to provide
a non-refundable $550,000
deposit as early as two days after
Corcoran Jennison received the
town’s purchase agreement.
The Glen Ellen property,
meaning that the town had a
right of first refusal under Chapter
61B to purchase the property
until March 22, 2016.
“To wait is to effectively waive
our right anyway,” McCaffrey
said during discussion. “Waiting
six weeks is essentially kicking the
can down the road.”
“We don’t know what’s going
to happen in the next six weeks,”
Smith said. “I would never waive
the town’s right.”
Neville added that, along with
McCaffrey, he was in favor of
waiving the town’s right of first
refusal, saying that the decision
would not be made solely on
the discussion arising during the
meeting, but from all of the information
that the selectmen had
gathered during the process.
Residents of Millis and Holliston
spoke to the Board during
the meeting, voicing concerns
about the project’s impact on
traffic, home valuation, water
use and runoff, and land preservation.
Residents also questioned
the purchase price, noting that
$13 million is far above the current
land valuation.
A special permit was issued
in 2008 by the Millis Planning
Board for Glen Ellen to sell the
property for future development
of up to 341 units of senior residential
housing. After years of
litigation, that permit was approved
in 2012. Normally, permits
of this nature are good for
two years, but the Massachusetts
legislature in 2012 granted a
four-year extension on such permits
as part of a job and growth
stimulation incentive, meaning
that the Planning Board’s original
2008 permit is valid through
January 2018.
The permit allows for a developer
to build up to a 341-unit
senior residential community on
the Glen Ellen property. The current
plan released by Toll Brothers
consists of 324 housing units
— 108 single-family detached
homes, and 216 townhouses in
groups of two to four units. The
detached homes have an estimated
sale price of $515,000,
while the townhouses would sell
for $440,000.
Business as Usual
at Glen Ellen
by J.D. O’Gara
“Until the property gets
sold, we are here and open for
business,” says Eileen Aviza,
General Manager for the Glen
Ellen Country Club. Property
owners extended the first right
of refusal to the Town of Millis,
which declined to purchase the
property, on February 10, 2016.
“We’re still selling golf and
pool memberships and booking
2016 functions,” says Aviza.
“We anticipate being here for
2016.” Pool membership includes
use of the swimming
pools, tennis, basketball and
volleyball courts, softball field,
horseshoe pits, playground
and miniature golf, seven days
a week, while the pool is open,
Memorial Day to Labor Day.
The country club’s terrace
room can hold up to 120
people, and its main ballroom
Although the specific home models planned for the Millis site are not
available, this picture shows an example of a Toll Brothers home in an
active adult community in Methuen.
can hold up to 350. The club
will offer its swim lessons, golf
camps and daily fee golf this
summer, and it will again work
with Millis Recreation on hosting
the Millis Swim Team for
practices in the 2016 season.
“I still have same staff returning,
and my managers are
returning, so it’s business as
usual,” says Aviza, who says she
has always known about “something
was going on on the back
burner” about the property, but
not the details.
“People have been calling,
and they think the backhoes are
here and the property is already
sold, and that is not the case
right now,” says Aviza.
The Glen Ellen Country Club
is located at 84 Orchard Street,
in Millis. They can be reached at
(508) 376-2978 or online at www.
theglencc.com.
In a proposed five-year buildout
plan, in which 20 percent of
the proposed units are built and
all are sold each year, the development
would net Millis approximately
$525,000 per year
in added property tax revenues,
culminating in an approximate
annual $2.5 million in property
taxes once the community is fully
built out and sold through. Toll
Brothers has an eight-year window
for the full build-out, according
to the selectmen.
If Millis were to have purchased
the Glen Ellen property,
the average residential property
tax bill would have risen about
$300 per year, given a 30-year
loan period, an interest rate of
3.5 percent, and an additional
$0.83 per $1000 valuation. The
current average single-family
home valuation in Millis is about
$357,000, and the current average
property tax bill is about
$6,200. There would have been
no restrictions on how the town
could have used the property,
Smith said.
According to a January 2016
report for Toll Brothers by ESE
Consultants, the completed community
will add an estimated 509
new Millis residents once the
community is fully built-out and
sold through.
Although that population consists
solely of adults and would
not add school-age children to
the Millis school system, it could
foster intra-town movement,
with current Millis empty-nesters
moving into the new community
and families with school-age children
taking their place in existing
Millis homes.
The community will have
its own slew of private services
like trash pickup, snow plowing,
and road maintenance, all paid
for through a homeowner association
fee estimated at $350 per
month per housing unit. The development
also includes a sewage
treatment plant.

Millis, Holliston among Green
Community Celebrants
On February 16, the Massachusetts
Department of Energy
Resources hosted a regional
event at Holliston Town Hall
recognizing the achievement of
Green Community status of Millis,
Holliston, Pepperell, Littleton
and Stow. In the 9th round of the
program, these five communities
are among 19 new Green Communities.
In order to qualify, communities
must pass five criteria:
• Provide as-of-right siting in
designated locations for renewable/alternative
energy
generation, research & development,
or manufacturing
facilities.
• Adopt an expedited application
and permit process for
as-of-right energy facilities.
• Establish an energy use
baseline and develop a plan
to reduce energy use by
twenty percent (20%) within
five (5) years.
• Purchase only fuel-efficient
vehicles.
• Set requirements to minimize
life-cycle energy costs
for new construction; one
way to meet these requirements
is to adopt the new
Board of Building Regulations
and Standards (BBRS)
Stretch Code.
The designation opens up
access to grant funding for additional
energy efficiency and
renewable energy projects at the
local level.
Change?
Fear not. We can help.
We make transferring to an NB Checking account as painless as
possible. We’ll do your paperwork (not that there’s a ton of it) and we’ll
come to your house or the place that you work. All you do is sign a few
pieces of paper. That’s it.
If you’re worried about our bank
not having enough branches, we
can ease your mind. With an NB
Checking account, you can withdraw
money at any ATM in the world, and
we’ll reimburse every fee. With our
mobile app, you can make payments,
transfer funds or make deposits from
your smartphone and tablet. No
matter where you are.
Most important, after you
open your account, you’ll begin
to appreciate our more personal
approach to service, our commitment
to local families and businesses —
lots of things that you might not
feel with a larger, less communityfocused
bank.
In other words, though it
may mean a little change in the
beginning... you’ll end up feeling a
whole lot better about banking than
you do now.
Welcome.
It’s a wonderful bank.
Historic Property in Millis Free to New Home
By J.D. O’Gara
The barn was built in 1800
and the house was built around
1850. They’re probably two of
the last buildings of post and
beam construction built in Millis
(then known as East Medway),
and they’re set to be demolished,
unless someone wants to claim
them. At the site of the old Braman
Screw Machine Company
(which ceased operation in 2009)
on the last stretch of Route 109
in Millis before hitting Medway,
Tractor Supply Company has
purchased the site.
R & R Auto Repair
The buildings were originally
built and owned by John Bullen,
who was the incorporator of the
Hartford & Dedham Turnpike in
the area, and was likely the site of
the toll-gate. Later, it was owned
by Phil Braman, who operated
the Braman Screw Machine
Company in Millis.
Tractor Supply Company
cannot use the buildings on the
site, which it intends to raze. The
Millis Historical Commission has
intervened, however, forestalling
the demolition. For a very short
time, the buildings are available
for the taking, as long as whoever
The house, which was constructed
by John Bullen, who incorporated
the Hartford & Dedham Turnpike
in the area, is one of the last
built in Millis of post and beam
construction.
“Any property that has historical
significance that is going to
get razed has to go through the
Historical Commission. When
someone applies to the building
department for demolition, we
have only 60 days or the structure
can get razed,” says Nathan
Maltinsky, Chair of the Millis
Historical Commission. “What
we’re doing is we’re trying to
find an interested party to a.)
move the house and barn or b.)
dismantle it and repurpose the
structure,” says Maltinsky, who
adds, “This is a growing problem
with a lot of properties. A lot of
people don’t want to put money
into older structures.”
Maltinsky presented this idea
to the Millis Planning Board on
behalf of the Historical Commission.
“Tractor Supply agreed
to all that. It has been very accommodating
in trying to do
something with the property
instead of just tearing it down,”
says Maltinsky.
Tractor Supply, says Maltinsky,
will be closing on the purchase
this spring. “If anybody
was interested, we’d have to act
fast on it. One person might want
the house; one person might
want the barn. If we had more
than one party interested, then
the Historical Commission
would have to make a
decision.”
Maltinsky points out that
the Millis Historical Commission
has a duty to preserve
and oversee historical
assets of the town, and he
hopes someone from Millis
or other nearby towns
might be interested in the
structures. If you or someone
Trying Something New
Spurred Growth as an Artist
Artist Spotlight: Paula Fraser
She always knew she was creative.
When Paula Fraser retired
from teaching preschoolers about
seven years ago, she had dabbled
a variety of arts and crafts, including
spinning and rug braiding,
not to mention promoting
art through her work with children
in Millis and Sharon, but
when she finally had the time,
the nearly 40-year Millis discovered
her hidden talent – as a pastel
artist. In fact, just last month,
over 30 of her paintings were
featured in a show in the Roche
Bros. Room of the Millis Public
Library.
“You’re never too old to try
something new,” says Fraser,
who says a friend introduced
her to an instructor in the medium.
“I never thought I had
talent.” Fraser later continued
her pastel work through a new
teacher, Jeannie Rosier Smith,
of Sudbury. “I’ve
been taking lessons
from her for
almost five years,”
says Fraser, who
even traveled to
Provence, France,
with this instructor.
“She’s the
one that taught
me, gave me encouragement,
suggestions. She’s
fantastic.”
Fraser says she enjoys the medium
because “it’s messy. I really
like the fact that it’s dry, so I don’t
have to wait for it to dry, and you
can do a lot of layers and have
a lot of really bright colors. It’s
very forgiving, but it really is an
art,” says Fraser, who adds that
some artists don’t value the medium
as much as, say, oil painting.
“You do have to cover it with
glass,” she says, adding that some
people spray their work to set it
before framing. “I do my own
framing,” says Fraser, “and I
don’t spray my art. I think it dulls
the color, somewhat.”
Fraser, who has also taken art
classes as a member of the Concord
Art Museum, has had some
success in a number of art shows,
to date.
“I was in an art show at the
Mill Gallery in New Hampshire
and the Warner Fall Foliage Festival,
also in Kennebunkport at
the Port Gallery, she says, noting
that she’s done several shows in
New Hampshire. Some of her
pieces that she’s painted from
her lake home in Bradford, NH
were shown at a show held by
that town’s Historical Society, at
which she even sold a few paintings.
“I never realized you can really
lose yourself in something,”
says Fraser, who says she is drawn
to painting water, attracted to
capturing and portraying light.
Time just goes by.”
The artist begins her work
in charcoal, with a thumbnail
sketch to capture the “darks and
lights.” Later, she adds to it to
make it more three-dimensional.
“I step back and say, ‘Oh, my
god, I did that!’” she says. “I surprise
myself at how it comes out,
although sometimes…it doesn’t,”
she laughs.
Fraser’s only regret, she says,
is not having begun her artwork
at a younger age, but, she says,
“Time didn’t work out. I was
working two jobs and raising a
family. I didn’t know I had this
in me. I knew I was creative, but
I didn’t know I could draw and
paint like I do. says the mother
two and grandmother of five.
Fraser says she’s still growing
and experimenting with different
avenues of art, such as landscapes,
portraits and still life. She
enjoys painting from her travels
with her husband and with
friends, which have taken her to
every continent excluding Antarctica.
“I try to paint from the different
areas,” she says, “It reminds
me of the times we’ve had, the
experiences we’ve had.”
Eyelid Margin Disease
By Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.,
Milford Franklin Eye Center
Eyelid margin disease, including
blepharitis, occurs when the
eyelids become coated with oily
particles and bacteria near the
base of the eyelashes. This condition
is very common, and unfortunately,
is often misdiagnosed by
many eye professionals as allergy,
which it is not.
With eyelid margin disease the
eyelids are inflamed. Symptoms
include: Eye and eyelid irritation,
itchiness of the eye, redness of
the eye and a burning sensation.
This condition frequently occurs
in people who have a tendency
toward oily skin, dandruff
or dry eyes. With blepharitis,
both the upper and lower eyelids
become coated with oily particles
and bacteria near the base of the
eyelashes. It may cause irritation,
itchiness, redness, and stinging or
burning of the eye.
What causes blepharitis?
Everyone has bacteria on the
surface of their skin, but in some
people, bacteria thrive in the skin
at the base of the eyelashes. Large
amounts of bacteria around the
eyelashes can cause dandruff-like
scales and particles to form along
the lashes and eyelid margins.
Blepharitisis also associated
with meibomianitis— a dysfunction
and inflammation of
the nearby oil glands of the eyelids
(called meibomian glands).
Blepharitis is also common in
association with a skin disorder
called rosacea. In this case, we
call the eyelid problem “ocular
rosacea.”
What is ocular rosacea?
People who have acne rosacea,
a common skin condition causing
pimple-like bumps and facial
redness may suffer from ocular
rosacea. This can affect the eyelids
with redness and swelling. If
you have ocular rosacea, reduce
alcohol, caffeine and chocolate in
your diet. Omega-3 fatty acids
(fish oil and flaxseed oil) are also
helpful. Doxycycline or similar
derivatives can help improve the
dysfunctional oil glands as well
as both facial and eye symptoms.
Reducing stress and better sleep
are critical in controlling the
symptoms.
What is demodex
blepharitis?
Some people with oily (seborrheic)
skin, and more so those
who have a weakened immune
system can have microscopic
mites (demodex folliculorum),
and their waste materials cause
clogging of follicles at roots of
eyelashes, and in some cases
might be associated with development
of skin conditions such
as rosacea and blepharitis. Another
version of these mites (demodex
brevis) can be found more
generally in oil glands of the skin
and eyelids, which also may contribute
to blepharitis symptoms.
While presence of these tiny
mites is common in everyone,
researchers speculate that some
people develop demodex blepharitis
due to unusual allergic or immune
system reactions leading to
inflammation.
What if I get a stye?
A stye develops from an eyelash
follicle or an eyelid oil gland
that becomes clogged from excess
oil, debris or bacteria. Styes
can be a complication of blepharitis.
If you have a stye, treat it
like you treat blepharitis, and if
not better within two weeks, see
your ophthalmologist.
How is blepharitis
treated?
Blepharitis is often a chronic
condition, but it can be controlled
with the following treatment:
• Warm compresses. Wet a
clean washcloth with warm
water, wring it out and place
it over your closed eyelids for
at least one minute. Repeat
two or three times, rewetting
the washcloth as it cools. This
will loosen scales and debris
around your eyelashes. It also
helps dilute oil secretions from
nearby oil glands, preventing
the development of a chalazion
(stye)-an enlarged lump
caused by clogged oil secretions
in the eyelid.
• Eyelid scrubs. Using a clean
washcloth, cotton swab or
commercial lint-free pad
soaked in warm water and
few drops of baby shampoo,
gently scrub the base of your
eyelashes for about 15 seconds
per eyelid.
• Antibiotic ointment. Your
ophthalmologist may prescribe
an antibiotic ointment.
Using a clean fingertip or cotton
swab, gently apply a small
amount at the base of the eyelashes
before bedtime.
• Artificial tears or steroid eye
drops may also be prescribed
temporarily to relieve dry eye
or inflammation.
Specific treatment of demodex
blepharitis: A commercial
eyelid scrub combined with
tea tree oil may be effective for
treating this type of blepharitis.
The target here is to reduce the
population of the mite (demodex).
Other reported treatments
of demodex blepharitis include
sulfur oil and steroids. An antiparasitic
gel (metronidazole) also
has shown effectiveness as a treatment.
Serving the children, adolescents and adults
of greater Boston for fourteen years
After a 30-year career as a Software Engineering
Manager Frank Gatulis retired from Hewlett
Packard. He originally began working at Digital,
which became Compaq and then Hewlett Packard.
A couple of years in to retirement Gatulis
was looking for a way to incorporate more social
interaction into his daily life and was offered an
opportunity to volunteer at the Medway Police
Department by Allen Tingley who was then the
Lieutenant, in October 2004. The general job
description was for “custodial and some light
maintenance” work. Since then he has been volunteering
6 days a week for 1-2 hours at a time,
longer when a particular task is more involved
than usual.
Gatulis is willing to take on any custodial task
such as cleaning the station, washing police vehicles,
repairing broken or damaged equipment,
and miscellaneous yard work or snow cleanup
when necessary.
“Over the years Frank has saved the Police
Department a tremendous amount of money by
volunteering his time,” said Police Chief Allan
Tingley. He continued, “Frank has become an
invaluable member of the department and we
count ourselves very lucky to know such a wonderful
man.”
Gatulis has always enjoyed using his skills to
help others – a trait he says he inherited from his
parents. He previously served on the board of
Medway Cable and provided services and oversight
to several renovation projects at the station.
These days, in addition to providing a valuable
service to the Police Department he sees his volunteer
commitment as giving him daily structure,
commitment, social interaction, and physical exercise.
He also values the relationships he has developed
with the officers and staff at the station.
“Being able to help out at the Police Department
is nothing like doing a regular job. It’s more like
going out to help your friends. The entire Police
Department staff is a great bunch of people who
respect each other and the people they have to
deal with. I feel appreciated and it’s just a pleasure
to be able help out however I can. I can’t think of
a “real” job I’d rather be out doing.”
Southern Rail Bluegrass Concert
at Medway Library 3/20
The toe-tappingest, footstompingest
group ever to grace
the Cole Room will be back at
the Medway Public Library Sunday
March 20, 3-5 p.m.
The Friends of the Medway
Public Library are sponsoring
this benefit concert to raise
money for the Library. Southern
Rail Bluegrass music always
is a hit with all ages. The room
layout allows the band and audience
to interact, making this a
very good venue for live music.
Easy access and a big indoor
lobby make this a perfect
“trial concert” for children who
might not be able to sit through
a concert in a more formal setting,
since parents can take them
out to the lobby where they can
dance to the music.
Audience members have the
opportunity to mingle with band
members at intermission and
after the show. For new fans and
old, Southern Rail
CDs and a DVD of one of
their concerts will be on sale at
intermission.
Southern Rail’s recordings,
featuring their prolific songwriting,
have climbed to #11
on Bluegrass Unlimited’s Top
Thirty Single’s Chart, and have
hit #1 on a number of radio stations
across the nation.
Buy tickets at the Library
beginning March 1. Southern
Rail concerts often sell out, so
advance purchasing is recommended.
Tickets are $10 adult,
$5 student, under 12 free.
Refreshments will be available
at intermission for a small
donation.
Medway Fire and Police Chief
Address Opioid Epidemic
On January 20th the Medway Secondary
PTO, along with the school district, hosted a
substance abuse panel of local experts, including
Fire Chief Jeff Lynch and Police Chief Allen
Tingley, on the nationwide drug and opioid epidemic
and the effect it has on students and the
school community. The purpose of the evening
was to provide an overview of what is happening
at the state and national level and to support
It’s Coan for a warm and cozy winter!
families in prevention, detection, and providing
treatment resources.
Additionally, they participated in a Chief ’s
Roundtable addressing the opioid epidemic at
the Wrentham Public Safety Complex on January
better serve the community and provide families
with resources in dealing with this problem.
Fun Medway Lions March Events
Father/Daughter
Dance - March 6th, 2016
(1-4 p.m.)
Each March, images spring to
mind, of girls in pretty dresses and
bows, dancing on their father’s shoes
as their fathers twirl them around with
twinkles in their eyes and smiles on
their faces, because March is the time
of year for The Annual Fathers and
Daughters Dance, proudly sponsored
by the Medway Lions Club.
Girls ages 3 and older are invited to
bring their date – dad, uncle, grandfather,
etc. – to the event. The dance is
open to all in Medway and surrounding
communities and will take place at
the Medway High School cafeteria.
Photographs are taken to commemorate
the event, which typically includes
games and light refreshments. It’s a fun
time for all.
Annual Pancake Breakfast -
March 20th, 2016
(8 a.m. – 12 noon)
One of the more enjoyable fundraising
efforts is our annual “All You
Can Eat” Pancake Breakfast at the
Medway High School cafeteria. Hundreds
of our friends, family, neighbors
in Medway and surrounding communities
as well as Lions from around the
district join us for a sumptuous breakfast,
which boasts a menu of pancakes,
scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and
“Joe’s famous quiche.” Photographs
with the Easter Bunny, a coloring contest
for the kids and raffle prizes round
out an enjoyable time for all! Admission
prices: $8 for Adults and $6 for
Senior Citizens and Children under
10, payable at the door. Come join us!
We appreciate the many people in
the community who volunteer their
time to ensure that the event is a success,
the many local businesses who
purchase advertising featured on the
placemats at the Breakfast, as well as
those businesses who donate their services
and goods for the event.
Millis Girls 4x200 Relay Team -
a Force Come of Age
By Christopher Tremblay
In the past, the numbers for
the Millis girls track team just
were not there, and without
a large contingency of bodies
to participate in the numerous
events, it was rather difficult for
the Mohawks to compete, never
mind win. That is, until recently.
Three years ago, Laura Connor
took over the program and
has steadily been increasing the
number of bodies on her team
to where they can be competitive
within the Tri-Valley League.
“The first year I took over,
I tried recruiting students every
possible chance that I got. I don’t
think that there was a single individual
in any of my classes that
I didn’t try to get to run track
for me,” she said. “The first two
years found the numbers in the
20’s, but this year we have 40-
plus girls on the team. With these
extra numbers we’ve been able to
field a team that can compete in
events that we have taken part in,
in the past.”
One of those events is the
4x200 relay, where the Millis
girls have been putting up some
phenomenal numbers this season
participating in Invitationals.
The quartet is led by elder statesman
Katie Malewicz, a Millis
sophomore. The rest of the team
consists of three freshman runners
in Sara Schildwachter, Ciara
Moynihan and Morgan Kane.
Although its members are all
relatively new to the high school,
the foursome has been running
as a team for the past few years.
“They’ve been running together
since the seventh grade
with us, their score just didn’t
count,” said Connor. “Now that
they are in the high school, we
can actually count their scores in
our meets, and being so young,
they should be together for quite
a while.”
Thus far, the quartet has finished
fifth in the Division 5 Relay
Tournament and grabbed an
impressive second place finish
in the Freshman/Sophomore
Meet. According to Connor, the
girls have yet to solidify a specific
rotation in the event despite their
strong performances.
Millis Athletic Director Chuck
Grant has been impressed to say
the least at what Connor has
been able to get out of these
young girls as well as the rest of
the track team.
“The program has improved
by leaps and bounds. We use to
be the doormat of the league,
but Laura’s ability to get the kids
out of the hallways and harness
their strengths has turned us into
a competitive program.” Grant
said. “Our program numbers
have increased by 300 percent
since her appointment.”
In addition to the 4x200 relay
– Moynihan and Malewicz also
run the 4x400 for Millis along
with Parousia Cruz and Hannah
MacDonald. The 4x400 team
took third place in the Relay
Meet. Not only has the 4x200
team qualified to participate
in the State Tournament, each
member has qualified to take
This young Millis girls 4x200 relay team has been running together
since its three freshmen (there’s one sophomore) were in 7th grade.
Now that their scores count, the runners are taking off and making a
name for Millis Girls Track. From left to right Sara Schildwachter, Ciara
Moynihan, Katie Malewicz and Morgan Kane.
part in an individual event as
well: Malewicz will run the 300,
while Schildwachter, Moynihan
and Kane have all qualified in
the 55-meter dash.
While Connor has managed
to get the number of female athletes
to come out for the team,
it has been first year Assistant
Coach Liz Schildwachter who
has worked relentlessly with the
sprinters and the relay teams to
get them where they are today.
“The girls have been really
receptive to Liz’s coaching, and
moving forward, I feel this team
is only going to get better,” the
Millis Coach said. “If we continue
to work hard, we’ll keep
moving forward. Other teams
in the league are starting to take
notice; originally they didn’t see
us as a competitive team. Now,
they do.”
As the Mohawks continue to
work hard under Connor and
Schildwachter, they will only get
better, the question is how much
better will they become and will
anyone be able to catch them.
Medway-Ashland Gearing Up
for Hockey Tourney
By KEN HAMWEY
No one can accuse the Medway-Ashland
girls ice hockey
team of being inconsistent. The
program is seven years old, and
it’s qualified for tourney play in
all of those seven seasons.
The co-op team, which also
includes skaters from Millis and
Holliston, had a 9-4-3 record at
Local Town Pages deadline and
soon will be gearing up for another
tournament run. Last year,
coach Kurt Carter’s squad went
15-5-4 overall, bowing out of
the playoffs after losing to Milton.
The girls’ deepest advance
in tourney action came in 2014
when they were eliminated by
Sandwich in the semifinals.
“During our early years our
objective was to get to the playoffs,’’
Carter said. “This season
our goal is to compete for a state
championship. It’s a realistic expectation.
We’re glad we qualified
for the playoffs but the key
now is to peak at the right time.’’
Medway-Ashland’s strengths
outweigh its deficiencies, making
the co-op contingent a viable
force in the Western Division
of the Southeast Mass. Girls
Hockey League, which includes
Franklin, King Philip, Westwood,
Dover-Sherborn, Medfield and
Walpole. “Our skill level is good,
we’ve got depth, we’re technically
sound and we can score,’’
Carter said. “On the flip side,
we’re young, inexperienced and
could be more confident.’’
Carter usually adjusts his
team’s style to the type of talent
on his roster. This season, he
says, “we’ve taken an aggressive
approach to the puck, our forechecking
is strong, and we’ve got
the speed and skill to get back on
defense.’’
The squad’s two senior captains
— center Kerryann Goode
of Medway and defenseman
Kasey Thoresen of Ashland —
are four-year veterans and no
doubt key cogs for the tourney.
“Kerryann became our first career
100-point scorer (10 goals,
22 assists this season),’’ Carter
said. “She’s got a high hockey
IQ, she’s skilled, skates well and
is quick. She’s a strong and accurate
shooter. Kasey is our leader
on defense. A smart competitor,
she’s strong, physical, tough and
wins her battles.’’
Medway’s Gabriella Airosus,
a junior left wing, and Holliston’s
Ashley Fondo, a junior
right wing, form the team’s first
line with Goode. “Gabriella is a
finesse player,’’ Carter said. “A
hard-worker, she can shoot and
gets her share of points. Ashley
has speed and power and she can
score, too.’’ Through 16 games,
Fondo had 16 goals and 13 assists
for 29 points and Airosus had 5
goals and 16 assists for 21 points.
Another key to Medway-Ashland’s
longevity in the playoffs
is freshman goalie Rachel Gittings
of Medway, whose goalsagainst
average was 2.19 after 16
games. Carter admires her fundamentally
sound style. “Rachel
has great composure,’’ he said.
“She’s instinctive and she plays
the angles well.’’
Sophomores Ally Smith of
Millis and Caroline Werner of
Holliston, along with Thoresen,
provide Medway-Ashland with
a formidable back-line defense.
“Ally and Caroline both have a
high hockey IQ, they play strong
and their skill level is good,’’
Carter said.
A senior whom Carter rates
highly is center Kaitlyn Auen of
Ashland. He admires her senior
leadership but he also likes her
intense style of play. “Kaitlyn is
very fast and she can change the
momentum of a game,’’ Carter
emphasized.
The team’s green line, named
for the shade of its warm-up
jerseys, consists of sophomore
Maddy Hornung at center, soph
Katie McGoff at left wing and
junior Colleen Reardon at right
wing (7 goals, 6 assists). All hail
from Ashland. “They’re good
skaters, highly skilled, fast, strong
and have scoring potential,’’
Carter noted.
Carter acknowledges that his
team is young and has depth, and
that’s evident with the likes of juniors
Rae Lambert (Medway left
wing), Kathryn Johnston (Holliston
right wing) and Lexi Maher
(Ashland defenseman) and sophs
Morgan Perry (Holliston right
wing) and Meghan Moriarty
(Ashland center). “Our future
looks bright with this group,’’
Carter said. “Their talent level
is very good.’’
The 50-year-old Carter, who’s
lived in Medway for 11 years and
is a vice president of finance for
Acronis (software company), has
been the program’s only head
coach since its inception, and his
passion for the program is obvious,
especially when the name of
the late Maddie Lamson is part
of the conversation. She died in
an auto accident last fall.
“Her loss impacted us on a
daily basis,’’ he said. “She was a
great example of why I love this
program. She had a relentless
desire to improve and she constantly
strived to be the best she
could be. She was a three-year
player and was a captain.’’
Improvements to Medway Water System
After many years of deferred capital investment
in the infrastructure of the Medway water system,
the current Water & Sewer Commission have been
working to update and improve the Medway water
system for the past several years. Current Water &
Sewer Commissioners include: Chair Robert Wilson,
Cranston Rogers, and Leo O’Rourke.
Now, in year five of this phased update the Department
of Public Services has: replaced all water
meters in town; replaced the Highland Street tank;
replaced lines throughout town including Main,
Village, West, Highland, Adams, and Winthrop
Streets. Some pipes that were replaced dated back
to 1911.
The Water and Sewer Division is charged with
the operation and maintenance of the Town’s
water supply, water treatment, water distribution
and wastewater collection systems. This entails
oversight of the system’s pumping and treatment
facilities located at four drinking water well sites.
Being a groundwater systems, the Town treats its
raw water with the addition of sodium fluoride
for dental health, lime for corrosion control and
sodium hypochlorite for disinfection. All of these
treatment processes require daily manual monitoring
by certified staff as well as with the Department’s
recently installed Supervisory Control
and Data Acquisition system. Drinking water is
pumped to two water storage tanks having a combined
capacity of 2.8 million gallons.
The wastewater system is comprised of approximately
forty-four miles of gravity sewer that discharges
into the treatment facility operated by the
Charles River Pollution Control District. Through
its recent sewer extension project, the Department
now operates and maintains a sewer pump station
located in the Trotter Drive Industrial Park area.
Upcoming projects include:
1. Sewer System Rehabilitation and Repair –
2016
2. Design – Brentwood Neighborhood Water
Main Replacement – 2016
3. Evaluation & Possible Replacement of
Water Services in Dean Street, Gable Way,
Kings Lane Neighborhood – 2016-2017
4. Holliston Street Water Main Replacement –
2018
Note: Due to traffic and transportation concerns,
the Town is purposefully deferring capital
construction work located in arterial roadways
until the completion of the Route 109 Reconstruction
Project.
Proposed Town of Medway
Agricultural Committee
There are more than 100 municipal agricultural
committees throughout Massachusetts. As
an appointed standing committee of the Town
whose members are engaged in farming, an agricultural
committee can:
• Serve as a local voice advocating for the farming
community.
• Provide visibility for farming & promotes agricultural
based economic opportunities.
• Encourage the pursuit of agriculture.
• Work to preserve, revitalize and sustain the
community’s agricultural businesses, its farmland,
and rural character.
• Provide a link to sources of technical, educational,
financial, and business assistance available
to the farming community.
• Help mediate farm related problems or conflicts.
• Work with other Town boards and committees
about issues facing the Town.
In March of 2010 a representative from the
Massachusetts Department of Agriculture spoke
with town residents at a public meeting called to
explore the creation of an Agricultural Committee
in the Town of Medway. At that time there
was not enough resident interest in serving on
the committee to justify creating the committee.
Recently, a resident approached the Board of
Selectmen with a request to revisit the issue and
determine if there was sufficient interest in committee
service at this time. If you would be interested
in learning more and possibly serving on
this committee please contact Conservation Agent
Bridget Graziano at bgraziano@townofmedway.
OUR CLIENTS ARE SPEAKING OUT
“Jenn is fantastic. I can honestly say we would not have found our current home if it
wasn’t for Jenn. Jenn is extremely knowledgeable about current market conditions and more
importantly, extremely honest. She would rather have her clients not buy a house than buy
the wrong house. We have worked with Jenn for years now and very much recommend her
to anyone looking for a real estate agent that provides excellent service start to finish.” —
