Letter from the editor 

A year of change 

2014 has seen a year of change for the Lawn Tennis Association and Tennis 

Surrey. The Surrey office, previously based out of the National Tennis 

Centre, will be merged into a regionalised support function to include 

other counties in the South East of Britain. This model is consistent across 

the country and represents part of the LTA’s strategy for tennis under 

new Chief Executive, Michael Downey. 

To ensure that Surrey places to play tennis continue to receive the 

highest level of support, we are pleased to announce that a new Tennis 

Surrey office is now in operation, working alongside, but separately to 

the LTA’s regional support centre. In this edition of Tennis in Surrey the 

full changes in structure are explained along with the key contacts for 

any tennis enquiries you may have. 

Whilst 2014 has seen a great deal of change, we are pleased to report 

that a winning tradition has not. In this issue we report on county cup 

wins for several of our teams and profile a Surrey player who is soon to 

be the Tennis Europe Number 1 at U14s. 

We hope you enjoy reading about this year’s tennis news, events and 

successes in your county.

Great British Tennis Weekend 

Four “Great British Tennis 

Weekends” took place this year 

from May through to July and saw 

Surrey clubs and park sites across 

the county offer the opportunity 

to play tennis for free. All rackets, 

balls and other equipment were 

provided, so it really was just turn 

up and play! 

Rob Dearing, Head of 

Participation at the LTA said: “One 

of the truly great things about 

tennis is that it is a sport for all 

ages, making it perfect for families 

and the Great British Tennis 

Weekend is all about getting 

families out together to enjoy 

sport.”

Manager at the LTA said: “Our 

Surrey clubs have been so keen 

to be involved in this year’s Great 

British Tennis Weekend, all 

offering free tennis in different 

ways all of which potential players 

were able to book onto online with 

minimal hassle!”

17/18 May 

The first Great British Tennis 

weekend of 2014 was served into 

play by Barnes LTC, London. 

Head coach, Paul Spalding and 

his team had laid on a full day 

of tennis events, including mini 

tennis, cardio tennis and family 

orientated sessions for all to be 

involved. 

The atmosphere for the day was 

set with homemade cakes and 

a cup of tea! Music was playing 

whilst players took to the court 

with parents chatting and asking 

as to what follow on sessions were 

available. With the temperature 

being in the high 20’s, the call for 

a Cardio session was answered!

Club’s Great British Tennis 

Weekend open day. 

Adult, junior and family sessions 

were the order of the day, with 

Head Coach, Matt Trevail leading 

his team. Andrew Kirby the Club 

Chairman was on hand to show 

everyone the facilities on offer, 

including 21 courts consisting of 

mini red, orange, macadam and 

grass with proposed plans for 

artificial clay courts on the way. 

Wimbledon Park

28/29 June 

The team assembled at 

Wimbledon Park, led by 

Wimbledon Junior Tennis 

Initiative (WJTI) with the support 

of Surrey LTA and Merton Council 

ensuring this Great British 

Tennis Weekend did justice to its 

location, with the Wimbledon 

Championships taking place 

just a stone’s throw from the 

park courts. During the day over 

200 children from local Merton 

schools received free mini tennis 

coaching and also had the chance 

to dive around on the beach 

tennis courts and try out the LTA 

inflatable activity stations. Many 

adults also participated in tennis 

clinic sessions offering tips on 

their game, or for those new to 

tennis cardio tennis sessions were 

scheduled throughout the day.

to organise the day’s activities 

said: “It’s been a great weekend of 

tennis, with the country excited 

about tennis we just want as many 

people to try the sport and see that 

no matter their level, age or fitness 

it is a sport for all.”

19/20 July 

The weather forecast for the 

weekend was for heavy rain, 

however the sun shone and Head 

Coach, Nick Ingham and his 

team worked to deliver a fantastic 

weekend of tennis which included 

mini and cardio tennis for adults 

and juniors. 

The target for the Sports Park 

was to attract more girls to tennis 

and they achieved their aim by 

delivering a girls’ only session with 

participants ranging in age from 

10-14 years old, none of whom had 

previously played the game before. 

Questioned after the session, 

delivered by Jeremy Fleming, the 

girls were asked if they would 

continue to play tennis, to which a 

resounding “yes!” was given.

touchtennis 

Roadshow report 

touchtennis is best described as 

being the ‘closest thing’ to 5-a-side 

for tennis, in that it provides a 

level playing field for the sport, 

where anyone can play like a pro 

on a small court with foam balls 

and smaller rackets. touchtennis 

is an informal and easy version of 

the game for adults, that enables 

everyday players to recreate the 

style of tennis they see from the 

top players 

It is ‘easy to pick up’, ‘crazy 

amounts of fun’ and ‘incredibly 

addictive. 

The rules are simple: 

One serve only. 

If you throw the ball up to serve, 

you must hit it! If you don’t you 

lose the point! 

All Deuces are sudden death. 

Sets are to 4 games. 

No ‘lets’ on serve (if ball clips the 

net and lands in, it is in play!)

In order to assess the demand 

for the sport, along with potential 

future scale and scope across the 

country, Surrey LTA partnered 

with touchtennis Pro Ltd and 

the LTA, to run a 10 month 

pilot project from 1 March.

Carder (LTA) formed a team to run 

the project across the county with 

the following aims. 

To increase levels of 14+ 

participation in different 

environments including parks, 

community sites, leisure centres, 

colleges and universities through 

continuous all year round play. 

To measure levels of 

participation at pilot sites and 

conclude whether to scale up the 

project to a new national product.

around 300 weekly particpants 

so far.

What next? 

The pilot finishes in December

addictive, so I’m sure that it will 

remain a prominent sport in the

In this edition we profile one of Surrey’s rising 

junior stars, Jack Draper, soon to be U14 European 

No. 1. Jack has grown up a Surrey player and 

when his schedule permits enjoys competing for 

his county. He is currently at Reed’s School and 

continues to work with his long term coach 

Justin Sherring.

What do you enjoy the most 

about being a tennis player? 

Travelling and competing for GB. 

Who is your favourite tennis 

player? 

Andy Murray for showing that 

GB players can win Wimbledon 

singles! 

What does a typical week look 

like for you? 

25 hours a week of training, 

including a combination of tennis, 

strength and conditioning, yoga 

and competitions. 

What do you do in your free 

time? 

I don’t have too much free time, 

when I do I watch tennis on 

YouTube and enjoy chilling out 

listening to music and watching 

films.

Surrey Super seniors in World 

Championships

Surrey was well represented at the 

World Championships for super 

seniors (60 and over), which were 

held from 13 to 26 October 2014 at 

the beach and tennis resort Club 

Ali Bey, in Manavgat, Turkey. 

World Championships have been 

held here a number a of times as 

this is a venue with over 60 clay 

courts which can handle some 

700 participants from all over the 

world in one location including 

accommodation. 

In the first week the team 

championships were held. Surrey 

players winning medals for GB 

were: 

Rosemary Wilson Women’s 65, 

bronze 

Fran MacLennan Women’s 70, 

bronze 

Clive Hutchings Men’s 75, bronze. 

Other Surrey members of GB 

teams were: 

Jean Porter Women’s 75, finishing 

4th 

Betty Howard and Paula Wilson 

women’s 80, finishing 6th 

Mike Dawe Men’s 60, finishing 9th

The second week, in which the 

individual championships were 

held started with nice weather, 

but in the latter part the heavens 

opened and many matches 

got delayed. In the end the 

tournament was cancelled with 

some finals not being completed. 

Surrey players were successful 

particularly Betty Howard who in 

the women’s 80 won 3 medals, a 

gold in the doubles and bronze 

in singles and mixed doubles. 

Fran Maclennan got silver in the 

women’s doubles 70 and Jean 

Porter bronze in the mixed doubles 

75. Henk Nijeboer won silver for the 

second time in the men’s 70 singles, 

while our oldest winner was Darius 

Panah-Izada with 2 bronze medals 

in the men’s doubles and mixed 

doubles 85. All in all a very good 

performance for Surrey.

Surrey Aegon Coach 

of the month winners 

Tom Crisp 

November 2013 

Tom Crisp, who is Head Coach 

at Surbiton Racket & Fitness 

Club, was named Aegon Coach 

of the Month for November 2013, 

missing last year’s edition of 

Tennis in Surrey. 

A young coach, Tom leads the 

coaching team and has been 

instrumental in the club’s success 

over the past 12 months. It has 

been an incredibly busy 2013 

for Tom. He has supported the 

running of a Great British Tennis 

Weekend venue, developed 

Surbiton Racket & Fitness Club 

as part of the Disability Network 

and featured on Sky Sports to 

promote the LTA National Mini 

Tennis Week. Tom also finds time 

to run Cardio Sessions accessible 

to anyone, organise and deliver 

Year 3&4 schools competitions and 

take his coaching programme to 

Esher LTC. 

The LTA’s Sophie Joinson 

said: “We have a great working 

relationship with him and the 

club, and he is always so keen to 

get involved in any projects or 

campaigns we are running.” 


Jonny Thompson 

March 2014 

Jonny Thomson won March’s 

Aegon Coach of the Month 

award for his work across many 

programmes, in particular the 

junior programme at Woking 

Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. 

Jonny has been instrumental in 

making massive improvements 

in junior player numbers over the 

last year at the club and in the 

local area. He was promoted to the 

role as Head of Junior Tennis in 

2012 and has worked to develop 

school links and promote the 

game in the Woking community. 

In only two years, he has 

doubled the size of the junior 

programme from 182 taking 

part in weekly group coaching in 

January 2012, to 360 in January 

2014. 

His achievements have had a 

knock on effect increasing the 

number of Aegon Team Tennis 

Teams from 9 in 2012, to 17 for 

2014. They also had a record 

number of local schools sign up to 

take part in the local schools mini 

tennis competition at the club this 

summer. 

On receiving the award Jonny 

said: “Receiving the Aegon 

Coach of the Month award was 

an unexpected surprise, having 

passed my Level 4 Qualification in 

February it has been a rewarding 

couple of months! I continue to 

enjoy my time on court, and feel 

lucky that I work with such a 

great team of coaches delivering 

the ever growing programme at 

Woking Lawn Tennis Club.”

Caroline Jordan 

July 2014 

Caroline Jordan won the Aegon 

Coach of the Month award for July 

for her work at Will to Win Sheen 

Common. 

Caroline started this venue 

from scratch in only May last year. 

There are now 70 children on the 

programme. 

Her commitment to 

encouraging new players into the 

sport, particularly girls, has been 

demonstrated by the hours she 

devotes to school coaching, some 

of which are voluntary. 

Caroline has developed a great 

link with Sheen Mount School this 

term and selected the team who 

went on to win the London Youth 

Games mini tennis competition. 

The number of girls on the junior 

programme continues to soar. 

Caroline brings out the player in 

everyone and makes them believe 

they can play.

Dan Burden 

Memorial Trophy 

Tragically last year 21 year old 

Dan Burden died after a car 

crash. He was a tennis coach 

at Elstead Village Tennis Club, 

having started playing at the club 

at the age of five and becoming 

the club’s first tennis apprentice 

before becoming a fully qualified 

LTA coach. He had just spent six 

months coaching in India and was 

due to fly to Australia to coach for 

a further six months in Perth. 

The club has worked with the 

LTA so that a grade 3 tournament 

for 10 and under players will now 

be run at Elstead on an annual 

basis in memory of Dan. Hence 

the Dan Burden Memorial Trophy 

has been created. 

Over one hundred tennis 

players aged from 5 to 10 from 

all over the south east entered 

the inaugural tournament at the 

end of July. The tournament was 

split into five events for different 

ages, a ten and under and nine 

and under event for boys and 

girls and a mixed event for eight 

and under. With the weather 

reaching 28 degrees the players 

showed incredible fitness and 

tenacity to keep the standard of 

the play incredibly high, pleasing 

spectators on all court sides. 

Before each event the players 

were told a bit about Dan and 

many showed a lot of interest, 

asking to see photos and videos 

of him. Many of Dan’s friends 

and playing partners helped out 

or just popped in to watch for 

a while. It was a great way for 

everyone to remember him and 

relate stories about him. As well 

as trophies for all the events, a 

Dan Burden trophy was awarded 

for the player who had the most 

fun and was slightly on the 

cheeky side, as this was very much 

Dan’s character. This trophy was 

awarded to eight year old Miguel 

Elizondo from WJTI.

What it means for 

tennis in Surrey 

This year has seen a change in structure with the LTA and the county 

associations. The LTA will now operate on a regional basis with the South East 

offices at the National Tennis Centre and Bromley Tennis Centre. 

The county associations remain a 

key part of British Tennis and we 

will continue to work closely with 

the LTA on supporting tennis in 

Surrey. The LTA Regional Office 

will be able to point you in the 

right direction for any tennis 

queries and has a network of 

participation managers, tennis 

services assistants, facilities 

managers as well as a competition 

and education officer.

Clubmark is a best practice 

accreditation implemented 

by Sport England in 2006. 

Tennismark is the ‘tennis’ version 

of this accreditation and the LTA 

use this as a way to recognise 

good standards. Tennismark is 

integrated into the Registration 

process and consists of a range 

of basic questions about the key 

areas of an organisation, including 

venue management, workforce, 

members and players, coaching 

and competition programme, 

promotion and forward planning. 

A mini health check is formulated 

and shared with the venue 

to support with its on-going 

development. There are two tiers to

Tennis Surrey 

The process of merging the four former LTA County Offices of Surrey, 

Middlesex, Kent and Sussex into a single South East regional team is now 

complete. 

A new Surrey County Office has 

been set up based at the National 

Tennis Centre, and will work 

alongside the LTA South East team. 

The Surrey office will look after 

county affairs, local competition 

(Wilson Surrey Leagues, Postal 

events, Aegon Team Tennis and 

Road to Wimbledon), supporting

Some information on Tennis 

Surrey 

The Surrey AGM is generally the 

first Thursday in December every 

year; all registered venues are 

invited and the event is usually well 

attended. The meeting includes 

formal business, presentation of 

Awards, County Colours, Surrey 

League trophies and a presentation 

of Surrey news and activities. 

The Council is elected at the 

AGM following nominations 

from venues. It meets four times 

a year for reports and discussions. 

Each Councillor has an a specific 

responsibility (Publicity, Finance, 

Competitions, Communications, 

Coaching etc). 

The Operations Board meets 

approximately eight times per year. 

There are representatives from 

Competitions, Communications, 

Venue Support, an Elected Council 

Representative, The Secretary, 

Treasurer and Chairperson. 

The County Association team 

is based at the National Tennis 

Centre with two full time 

members one part-time member. 

They will look after County 

affairs, competition, supporting 

volunteers and senior and junior 

county teams.

GTA: Grand Theft Auto or 

Guildford Tennis Academy? 

The cult video game Grand 

Theft Auto shares its abbreviated 

name with the newest indoor 

tennis programme in Surrey, the 

Guildford Tennis Academy. We 

were invited to visit their two 

centres in Ash and Milford to find 

out why the only game being 

played there doesn’t involve a 

Playstation or a X-Box. 

The GTA programme was setup 

by five passionate tennis players, 

three of whom are tennis parents 

who wanted to see a safe, enjoyable 

place for their children to learn to 

play tennis in winter and summer 

without the threat of the great 

British weather spoiling play. The 

two sites are located a short drive 

from Guildford and offer pay and 

play indoor tennis all year round. 

The Ash site has four indoor 

courts covered by an inflatable 

dome and two outdoor; Milford 

has three indoor courts covered 

by a permanent structure with 

retractable sides to allow for added 

summer ventilation as well as two 

outdoor courts. In addition to the 

tennis facilities, each site offers 

seating areas to view the tennis 

with refreshment facilities. 

The newest member of the 

team and Tennis Director is Justin 

Sherring, Manager of the Surrey 

U18 Boy’s team,who invited us to 

visit the two sites earlier this year. 

TinS: What does GTA offer for 

those wanting to play tennis in 

south Surrey? 

GTA: We are one of the few indoor 

centres in the county that don’t 

have a membership. So, we hope 

that anyone who would like to 

play the game whether new or 

experienced will visit. We have 

an adult and junior programme, 

offering beginner to advanced 

classes at all ages. 

TinS: Can anyone just turn up, 

book a court and play? 

GTA: Yes, but we have an online 

booking system, so you simply 

create a login and book your court

We are hoping local tennis players 

that may ‘hibernate’ in the winter 

might be tempted to keep playing 

without the worry of the wet or 

cold. 

TinS: What programmes do you 

offer for new or beginner junior 

tennis players? 

GTA: We have Tennis Tots for 2-4 

year olds which is fun with basic 

hand eye co-ordination and ball 

sense games. Red Club for our 5-7 

year olds most can rally about 6 

balls with the coach and who are 

learning serving both overarm and 

underarm. Orange Club is great 

for those a little older, 9 years, 

who are playing once or twice a 

week and want to play in a lively, 

enthusiastic environment, hit lots 

of balls, stay fit and improve their 

all round game. Finally we have 

Junior Club and Teen Club, ideal 

for players aged between 10-12 

years and 13+, players can expect 

to play lots of points after being 

worked very hard with some good 

old-fashioned drills as well as fun 

singles and doubles play. 

TinS: Do you offer anything for the 

more advanced junior player? 

GTA: For the 5-7 year olds Red 

Performance is ideal, they’ve got 

to be super keen little guys or girls 

who can rally with other similarly 

able players and are starting to 

score, play points and use the court 

in a tactical way. Competition plays 

a large part in these sessions and is a 

core part of our teaching approach. 

We then offer sessions appropriate 

to the level at 8 and 9 years. For the 

older guys and girls we have Junior 

High Performance, it is intense and 

specific training for players aged 

10-12 years old. Training is focused 

and competitively orientated 

towards improving each player’s 

performance in each of the five 

game-playing situations. Finally we 

have a Senior High Performance 

Programme with intense and 

specific training for players aged 

13+. Training is more and more 

based around each player’s chosen 

game-style and is developed more in 

consultation with each player as an 

individual. 

TinS: How about my mum and 

dad, they’re new to tennis and live 

nearby? 

GTA: We are just setting up 

a new Tennis Xpress course. 

Tennis Xpress is a beginner adult 

introductory coaching course for 

players who want to learn the 

basics of the sport. Designed as a 

nine-hour course over six weeks, 

Tennis Xpress is centred on the use 

of modified equipment such as 

slower bouncing green and orange 

balls to ensure that players quickly 

learn the game of tennis; being 

able to serve, rally and score by the 

end of the course. So tell mum and 

dad to keep an eye on our website! 

TinS: Have you had any celeb 

visitors? 

GTA: British Women’s No. 3, Jo 

Konta trained at GTA last month 

and Jack Draper is a regular 

on our private ‘blue court’, but 

no celebrities – just lots of very 

enthusiastic young players who 

my team and I are committed to 

pushing forward. Watch this space! 

TinS: Justin, you’ve trained several 

players to ATP and WTA world 

rankings and we’ve seen a few 

more hopefuls today, what advice 

would you give any player wanting 

to make a career as a tennis player? 

GTA: It’s a crazy long journey and 

only the toughest will survive!

The Surrey County Closed 

is for everyone! 

Our 2014 event was held 

at Sutton Tennis Academy, 

and it brought a change to 

the way the Surrey County 

Closed is run. We extended 

the tournament by two 

days and invited lower 

rated players to compete in 

a qualifying draw. Our aim 

was to enable these players 

to compete against others 

of a similar standard before 

the more experienced 

competitors came into 

the draw. To some extent 

this was successful, but 

we are hoping for more entries in 2015. Please help us 

by letting your friends know that the Surrey County 

Closed Competition is for everyone. 

In the event, we had nearly 400 entries overall 

and watched some very enjoyable tennis, running 

consolation events at all age groups. 

A number of Surrey Councillors also came to 

support the event throughout the week and we 

were honoured to have John Phillips presenting the 

trophies on Finals Day. John is standing down after 

many years of dedicated and committed service to 

Surrey as Chairman of the Competitions Committee. 

Although it rained for most of Monday we managed 

to keep pretty much up to schedule using all the 

indoor courts as well as the outdoor and turning 

matches round quickly. Thanks go to the Tournament 

Referee, Tim Pearce, and the Tournament Director, for 

ensuring a smooth and successful tournament for all.

Girls tennis thrives at Prior’s 

Field School Tennis Academy 

Prior’s Field is a boarding and day 

school for girls aged 11-18 and is 

working to change the downward 

trend of girls playing tennis in 

Britain and help to produce our 

next top players. The school runs 

a Tennis Academy with Orbit 

Tennis, providing an on-site, daily 

programme of tailored coaching, 

fitness and sports physiology, 

integrated with each player’s 

academic timetable. The Academy 

is showing great signs of success. 

During the summer of 2014 Prior’s 

Field pupils, including Isabella 

Tarrant, Jazzy Williams, Alice O 

Hagan, Rebecca Haynes, Eliza Austin 

and Emma White, were Surrey 

U13 league winners and runners 

up in the Aegon Schools’ county 

tournament. 

The school has recently started 

working Premier Tennis to aid in 

the development of the Academy. 

James Auckland is the Director of 

Tennis for Premier, where he designs 

and oversees a variety of coaching 

programmes and takes responsibility 

for coach development and training. 

A former professional tennis player, 

James was British No. 1 doubles 

player (2005-07), reaching the last 16 

of the Wimbledon men’s doubles 

championships. 

Recent successes of the academy 

include Daisy Phillips winning the 

St George’s Hill 14U this summer. 

Daisy is currently a 4.2 rating and 

ranked 71 in the country. As well as 

the St Georges win, she was runner 

up at Esher and Winchester. Daisy, is 

one of many girls that is benefiting 

from the programme delivered at 

Priors Field. In their programme 

each member of the Academy has 

a proportion of school fees ringfenced 

for their individual tennis 

requirements, creating a flexible 

approach to each girl’s tennis and 

fitness programme. 

Over 120 pupils outside the 

Academy also take tennis lessons, 

benefiting from the school’s six 

courts and well-provisioned gym. 

It also hosts regular mini tennis 

lessons and competition and has an 

active community programme. 


In March this year the coaching 

team at Reigate Priory Lawn Tennis 

Club embarked on an outreach 

programme to give a free tennis 

lesson for all pupils in years 1, 2, 

3 and 4 at Sandcross Primary and 

Reigate Priory Schools. 

Commencing on 24th February 

for two weeks, Head Coach, Russell 

Dykes led the sessions in Priory 

Park and at Sandcross School. 460 

children received a tennis lesson, 

with a further 180 Sandcross pupils 

receiving a second lesson as part of 

the initiative. Throughout the two 

weeks a talent ID programme was 

in place to invite those showing 

the most potential back to Reigate 

Priory Lawn Tennis Club, to receive 

a further four free performance 

tennis lessons. 

Russell Dykes said “It was 

brilliant to see so many children 

enjoy tennis, many for the first 

time. With Andy Murray winning 

Wimbledon last year, it’s great to 

see tennis as a sport that children 

want to try and our outreach 

programme has ignited their 

enthusiasm to do more.” 

The outreach programme was 

a result of the previous October’s 

‘Tennis Circus’ fund raising event 

which brought former British 

programmes 

Schools outreach programme in 

Reigate sees over 460 children 

Davis Cup player Danny Sapsford’s 

charity, ‘Bright Ideas for Tennis’ to 

Reigate Priory Lawn Tennis Club 

to deliver a day of coaching master 

classes and exhibition tennis 

matches. Over £1,000 was raised 

on the day with all of the money 

going into developing tennis 

within the local community.

members have gone to so much 

trouble to create funds for local

Wandsworth “Get Active” 

in King George’s Park 

Just before the final Great British 

Tennis Weekend of 2014, on 

Saturday 12 July, more than 5,000 

people participated in tennis and 

sport action at King George’s Park 

as part of the borough’s Get Active 

festival, aimed at encouraging 

healthy and active lifestyles. 

The event was officially launched 

by Olympian and chairman of 

Active Wandsworth, Chris Baillieu, 

along with the Borough’s Deputy 

Nayor Councillor Kim Caddy. It was 

the culmination of the Year Five 

and Six Mini Olympix competition, 

which saw more than 100 children 

from eight local schools compete 

in a range of sports, including 

tennis, with Penwortham Primary 

School emerging victorious. 

Dozens of free activities were 

provided to inspire the public to 

become healthier and more active. 

Cross Sports were on hand with 

4 large inflatable tennis activities 

and All Star Tennis delivered an 

exciting programme of adult and 

junior coaching sessions free of 

charge. 


Tennis Marathon at 

Wilton Tennis Club 

lasts 26 hours!

The Tennis Recovery Group 

On Saturday 29 March, for 2014’s 

Sport Relief, Wilton Tennis Club 

attempted a tennis marathon with 

club coaches, Darius Adomonis 

and Jack Hanky, bravely stepping 

up to the challenge of playing 

continuously for as long as 

possible. 

The weary players completed 

an astonishing 26 hours and 385 

seconds of play before succumbing 

to pains many of us would feel 

after just one hour. 

The effort of the pair and the 

fine work of Wilton Tennis Club 

meant that a total of £3493.39 was 

raised for Sport Relief. The club have 

thanked all those that contributed 

in raising the money and achieving 

such an impressive feat. 

In 2003 I was attending 

Wallington Resource Centre 

(WRC) for people recovering 

from mental health problems. 

As physical exercise is good 

for physical and mental 

wellbeing, the manager and I 

decided to start tennis sessions 

at Wallington Tennis Club in 

Hillside Gardens where I am a 

member. A two hour session on 

Tuesday afternoons was funded 

by South West London and St 

Georges Mental Health Trust 

(SWL&SGMHT). An annual grant 

of £300 paid for ten people 

to attend and was supervised 

by a member of the WRC staff. 

This was withdrawn a few years 

ago due to spending cuts. I 

approached the Director of 

SWL & SGMHT and asked if it 

could be reinstated. He found 

a new source for membership 

but could not fund the staff to 

supervise. So we found two 

volunteers, who were trained at 

the Volunteer Services Centre 

at Springfield Mental Hospital, 

to run the sessions. This 

arrangement has continued until 

now with six to twelve players 

coming each week. Tea, coffee 

and a chat are also provided.

The Aegon Open Tennis 

Tournament at Sutton Tennis 

and Squash Club 

This was the seventh consecutive 

year that Sutton Tennis and 

Squash Club has hosted an Aegon 

British Tennis Tour, a Tier 1 event. 

Thanks to the generosity of the 

Club’s sponsors, STSC was able to 

more than double the prize fund 

provided by the LTA, making this 

much the most remunerative stage 

on the tour with a prize pot of 

£12,750. There was, accordingly, a 

strong entry with Marcus Willis, 

Britain’s number 8 and world 

ranked number 363 the Men’s 

top seed, and Tara Moore the topseeded 

woman, ranked 4 in Great 

Britain and 262 in the world. In 

tandem with the senior event, the 

Club ran a Grade 3 tournament for 

juniors across seven age categories 

which attracted a total entry of 

170. This came to over 200 when 

doubles entries were also taken. 

Cheam Sports Lawn Tennis Club 

kindly made their courts available 

to take the considerable overflow 

from STSC. 

It already seems hard to believe, 

but we were blessed with dry and 

mainly sunny weather, apart from 

a downpour on Monday afternoon.

Andy Murray’s erstwhile coach and

Both they and their parents seemed 

to take a great deal of pleasure 

in the occasion. All concerned 

were grateful to Tim, Miles and 

Dan for their whole-hearted and 

energetic commitment to making 

a resounding success of a good long 

workout! 

Once the main tournament draw 

got under way, it was not long 

before seeded players started to 

be uprooted. One of the first to go 

was STSC’s own Jack Carpenter, the 

fifth seed, beaten by the unseeded 

Joshua Sapwell, who had come 

through the qualifiers. Joshua 

went on to reach the final, beating 

the third seed in the quarters 

and the second seed in the semis. 

In the other half, Marcus Willis 

proceeded serenely to the semifinal 

where James Marsalek, seeded 

six, beat him 6-2,6-4. James won the 

final 6-2,6-2, a scoreline which does 

not do justice to Josh and belies the 

excitement of what was really a 

close match.

President, and some words of 

thanks from Janet Tobin of the 

Marsden. This was followed by 

a Sponsors’ Lunch, laid on with 

customary lavishness by Gill 

Bradley, Club Co-Manager, with 

wines (very good ones to my taste) 

donated by Vineking. 

This was followed by the 

Women’s final between Tara Moore 

and Francesca Stephenson, the 

sixth seed. Fran had done well 

to reach the final, beating Lucy 

Brown, the previous year’s winner, 

in three sets in her semi-final but 

Tara, who had earned a wildcard 

entry into Wimbledon in 2013, 

proved too strong. Fran went down 

6-1,6-1 but not without a fight. The 

day was rounded off with some 

very entertaining doubles. Marcus 

and James teamed up to win the 

Men’s, Tara and Jessica Simpson 

won the Women’s, and it came 

as no surprise when James and 

Tara took the Mixed Doubles prize 

to crown a week that was highly 

satisfactory for them, for the Club 

and for all its many visitors. 

The Club is grateful for its many

edition of twenty prints of Tim 

in action, signed by him. These

County Cup Report from 

Matt Thomas 

Day 1 We met at the NTC on 

Thursday and began our County 

Cup journey to Southampton. 45 

minutes had passed and the team 

were already asking if we were near, 

and demanding food! 

Day 2 We arrived at the courts for 

8.15am and had 45 minutes practice 

on court in preparation for our first 

challenge against Staffordshire. 

Hannah Ferrett and Jodie Annie 

Lawrence-Taylor got the team off to 

a fantastic 2-0 lead with convincing 

singles wins. These results filled 

the team with confidence and 

Darinka, Emily, Jodie Burrage and 

Lana all recorded wins giving the 

team a comfortable 6-0 lead. The 

new partnership of Gemma and 

Beth performed exceedingly well in 

giving Surrey their seventh rubber 

of the day, and the pairings of Jodie 

and Emily and Lana and Mel secured 

wins ensuring the team defeated 

Staffordshire 9-0. 

Day 3 Hertfordshire were the day’s 

opponents and were very strong 

at 5 and 6 but Jodie Annie got a 

crucial win meaning the tie went 

to 1-1. We went to 2-1 down but 

Emily performed excellently to 

win a crucial singles which swung 

momentum back to Surrey, and 

Jodie and Lana continued in fine 

fashion scoring convincing wins. We 

entered the doubles 4-2 up knowing 

one win would secure the match 

for us. The same doubles pairs 

were picked and we won all three 

ensuring we defeated Herts 7-2. 

Day 4 We entered day four knowing 

that a win would take us back to 

Division 1. A different team was 

selected based on match ups against 

Hampshire. Gemma and Mel were 

selected to play at 5 and 6 and both 

started well winning the first sets. 

Both matches took in excess of two 

hours and were both too close to 

call. Eventually Mel won in straight 

sets with an awesome backhand 

line winner, and special mention to 

Gemma who won in a third set tie 

break 7-5 winning with a courageous 

forehand volley. Jodie Annie, Emily 

and Jodie all won convincingly and 

Lana Rush showed great fight in 

pulling through in 3 close sets. The 

team won all six singles rubbers, but 

continued in their relentless push for 

promotion by winning all 3 doubles 

matches ensuring we defeated 

Hampshire 9-0! Go Surrey!

Ladies County Week: 

Surrey Ladies return to 

Division 1! 

This summer’s competition 

took place at The Avenue Club 

in Hampshire and having been 

relegated last year we were on a 

mission to return straight back to 

Division 1. 

Day 1 We played Berkshire in 

glorious weather and got an early 

awakening when Laura Peterzan 

& Tash Starling immediately went 

a set down 0,6!, thankfully they 

turned it around and we took the 

opening 3 rubbers. The 2nd round 

of matches saw us at 5-5 or 6-6 all 

on all 3 courts with cousins Mel 

South & Charlotte Pearce winning 

a tough match 7-5, 7-6 against their 

opposite number & Jazz Asghar & 

Lana Rush pulled through 7-5, 7-5 

and Laura & Tash winning also in 

2... so seriously tough matches and 

somehow we were 6,0 in the tie... 

phew a win on the 1st day. 

Day 2 We were scheduled against 

Norfolk on courts where there 

was next to no shade for players or 

spectators, we found ourselves in 

3 set matches on all 3 courts, after 

the first set of matches we found 

ourselves 1, 2 down... in came the 

emergency supplies of Percy Pigs, 

now a necessity of our county 

exploits! With temperatures 

souring Laura & Tash, Mel & 

Charlotte and Jazz and Christa all 

produced fantastic wins turning 

the deficit on its head, we led 4-2. 

Mel now with Natalie Haden-Scott 

beat the 3rd’s which meant 5-2 and 

a win! 

Day 3 The ‘home team’ Hants 

& IOW, it was another blazing 

day and after the first round we 

found ourselves 1-2 down. The day 

continued to narrowly go against 

us and at 2-4 down we were within 

a whisker of loss and with our 

3rd’s to play their 1st’s it was a big 

ask. A member of our team said 

to Jazz to hit everything as hard 

as she possibly could at the 1st’s, 

(anyone who knows Jazz would 

know that is like sending a bull 

into a china shop!) well it seemed 

to be working, having lost 3 set 

points at 6-3 in the tiebreak we 

did eventually win the set...anyone 

watching it was very entertaining 

tennis and on the show court and 

I think them winning that 1st set

Lana responded to their earlier loss 

with a great win over the 2nd’s, 

Jazz & Christa went on to win the 

2nd set with an amazing display of 

tennis and with matches now tied 

at 4 apiece Mel & Nat were one all 

going into the third. A near perfect 

final set from Mel & Nat meant 

Surrey took it 6-0 and with it a 5-4 

win to Surrey that had surely never 

been in doubt. 

Day 4 Playing Yorkshire, we went 

2-1 up, then 3-1, 4-1 and therefore 

on the brink of guaranteed 

promotion, Laura & Tash involved 

in another long match duly 

obliged 7-6,6-4 and good reason 

for the Surrey girls to celebrate. 

This meant an early finish which 

the girls made full use of in the 

hotel pool and Jacuzzi which were 

priceless throughout the week, it 

was a gruelling week tennis wise. 

Last day Lancashire, also 

promoted so a straight shoot out 

to see who tops the group and 

with Mel South on for 15 out of 15 

rubbers, which is no mean feat at 

county week and her already 12 

out of 12 had been extremely hard 

earnt. After the first two rounds we 

found ourselves 4-2 up when the 

rain interrupted, the Lancs captain 

said they’d have to concede a 

rubber due to injury and therefore 

forfeit the tie, disappointing that 

Mel did not have the chance to play 

15 from 15 but we all felt as if she 

had. Havant club did us very well 

but it will nice to be back in group 

1 next year...likewise for the winter 

cup this year after numerous years.

Shirley Park Centenary 

Shirley Park Lawn Tennis Club 

is one hundred years old this 

year and to celebrate it hosted an 

open weekend at its grounds at 

Sandilands, East Croydon on 19th 

and 20th July 2014. 

On Saturday 19th July the club 

staged a day of tennis activities 

including mini tennis, Beat 

the Coach and Cardio Tennis. 

Participants were also able to pick 

up some tips from the resident 

coaches, find out the speed of their 

serve and join in lots of other fun 

games and events. On Sunday 20th 

July a brief talk on the history of 

the club was arranged followed 

by a wooden rackets event. Club 

members dressed up in 1914 era 

costumes in an attempt to recreate 

the atmosphere of bygone times 

on the club’s grass courts.

earlier in the year. 

Clubmark is the universally 

acknowledged cross sport 

accreditation scheme for 

community sports clubs. It is 

based on criteria which must 

be evidenced by the club’s on 

going practices. Cranleigh and 

Telford work hard to show 

benchmark standards in areas 

such as management, policy 

and procedures, welfare and 

protection, community links and 

marketing and communication to 

name but a few. 

The benefits of attaining Clubmark 

include increased funding pots 

available for application, national 

recognition for standards as well as a 

stronger footing for the club business 

for the future.

were played in a friendly and 

sportsmanlike manner. All of the 

many players that took part, in the 

leagues as well as the finals, should 

feel proud to have participated 

in such a successful event. We 

look forward to next year’s Little 

League... 

The Girl’s competition was run 

as a single league with all the 

teams playing each other and did 

not culminate in a final.

The Surrey Little League takes 

place throughout the winter. The 

purpose is to encourage friendly 

interclub competition, giving 

young players the opportunity 

to experience team spirit in a 

competitive setting. Invitations 

are sent out to tennis venues at 

the end of the summer and each 

participating team is put in a 

league and asked to complete all 

their matches by mid-March. The 

winning team in each league is 

invited to the Surrey Little League 

finals.
