Dear readers, 

In this article, I am sharing some thoughts from the Future of the Countryside 

Conference held last year: 

RURAL CHURCHES CONSTANTLY SURPRISE WITH NEW LIFE 

Faith and the Future of the Countryside conference took place in November 

2010. Marking the twentieth anniversary of the publication of Faith in the 

Countryside, the report of the Archbishops' Commission on Rural Areas, 33 sets 

of recommendations were made for future work. A prioritised short list of five 

was agreed by the conference delegates. Work has already started to 

implement these five: 

1) We call upon Government to enable affordable rural housing schemes to proceed where this 

need is established through a local housing needs survey and a community led plan formulated 

to an agreed national standard. 

2) We call upon Government to remove barriers to churches accessing funding for community 

benefit. 

3) We urge the Church to recognise and strengthen its contribution to sustainable communities and 

to use this as a basis for engaging with government and local communities in the Big Society 

agenda. 

4) We urge the Government to ensure that proposals about the future of the public forest estate 

safeguard the ecological, cultural, economic, recreational and spiritual benefits that are already 

in place. 

5) Appreciating the distinctive nature, demands and stresses of rural mission and ministry, we 

recommend that: 

Those in training for public mission and ministry should have effective preparation for rural 

and multi church work. This should include the preparation and equipping clergy moving to 

rural posts. Church leaders should develop improved support to address the well being of 

the clergy and lay officers engaged in rural mission and ministry. 

The rural church continues to explore alternative, flexible and radical models of collaborative mission 

and ministry. Jill Hopkinson Editor of Country Way in Rural Britain suggests: 

Rural churches are good at mission. Good at mission because rural churches have great potential to 

share the gospel and make a difference to the lives of rural residents due to the links and contacts, 

friendships and relationships that are intricately woven between church and community. We need to 

get better at finding out how to use these networks in creative ways to share our faith and hope with 

a wider group of people. 

Hope is not some naïve optimism that things will always work out fine. The resurrection is about 

rebuilding, a new start, a new life. Resurrection is both spiritual and practical, faith and hope. I will 

rise again. 

Rural Christians must be realistic, for many rural spirituality is not located in the practices of the 

church, but in those moments of insight and vision that comes from spending time in the natural 

landscape, or in community activities with fellow residents. The church can only hope to reclaim rural 

spirituality if it is prepared to meet people where their lives are lived and in work. The church needs 

to be present in the wider life of our villages, rather than being narrowly focussed on its own issues 

and concerns. Rural churches need to provide sacred space for the whole community, whether on a 

Sunday or not. 

If the church is to take rural ministry seriously, it needs to embody its story about how such a life can 

be lived by all God’s people. 

I hope these points will add to the Think Tank for present and future styles of ministries in the Vale of 

Pewsey Team of Churches. Please contact me if you would like to share your thoughts.

Ash Wednesday (9 th March) 

St John the Baptist Church, Pewsey 

10am Special Celebration of Holy Communion 

with hymns and readings to mark the beginning of 

Lent. This service will include “Ashing” for those 

who wish to receive the sign of the cross in the ash 

of last year’s Palm Crosses. 

After this service there will be coffee/tea in the 

Church Room. 

Some Christians try to follow the example of Jesus 

in the desert by giving up luxuries and practising 

self-discipline. And they try to put aside more time to 

prayer and religious acts so that they can really let 

God into their lives. 

The purpose of Lent is to be a season of fasting, 

self-denial, Christian growth, penitence, conversion, 

and simplicity. Lent, which comes from the Teutonic 

(Germanic) word for springtime, can be viewed as a 

spiritual spring cleaning: a time for taking spiritual 

inventory and then cleaning out those things which 

hinder our corporate and personal relationships with 

Jesus Christ and our service to him. Thus it is fitting 

that the season of Lent begin with a symbol of 

repentance: placing ashes mixed with oil on one's 

head or forehead. However, we must remember that 

our Lenten disciplines are supposed to ultimately 

transform our entire person: body, soul, and spirit. 

Our Lenten disciplines are there to help us become 

more like Christ.

Lent Course - Fully Alive 

The course this year continues on the theme: Fully 

Alive. Subjects include: Salt and light, The Church 

as an agent of change, Who is my neighbour. 

Each week will include: sharing time, prayer and 

quietness, setting the scene, listening to the Word, 

what shall we do? closing prayers. Each session will 

be for 90mins. Sample copy will be in all the 

churches. This course gives an opportunity to come 

together, to share, to learn, to help and enjoy each 

others company.

VALUED LIVES 

Pewsey Team has a small group of people who 

run a short monthly service in North Newnton 

church for a group of special needs adults. We 

also visit their day centre for 1½ hours once a 

fortnight to help them with music and singing. 

We have recently lost some group members 

and need new volunteers to join us. If you

REFLECTION FOR LENT 

Lord, Let everything I do this day and in this season of Lent come 

from you, be inspired by you. 

I long to be closer to you. Help me to remember that nothing is 

important in my life unless it glorifies you in some way. It's so easy 

to get caught up in the day to day of my life and keep saying, 

"Tomorrow, I will spend more time in prayer," 

but now my longing meets your love and I want to do it now. 

Help me to rely on you for help. The prayer asks you that I reach 

perfection. 

Please, Lord, remind me that "perfection" isn't the crazy, 

"successful" way I try to live my life, but a perfection of my most 

authentic, real self. 

My "perfection" might be holding my many flaws in my open hands, 

asking you to help me accept them. Heal me, Lord, and help me to 

find you in the darkness of my life. 

Let me reach out in this darkness and feel your hand and love there 

to guide me. 

Pet Blessing Service, 

Rushall - Sunday 27th March 

There will be a Pet Blessing Service at St Matthew's 

Church, Rushall on Sunday 27th March at 11am. 

The key players at the service will be the children 

from Rushall Primary School who have been invited 

to bring their own creatures great and small from 

hamsters to ponies and all sizes in between. 

However everyone is welcome: young and old, with 

or without an animal. There will be a collection in aid 

of the Blue Cross, a charity dedicated to improving 

the lives of sick and unwanted pets.

Information Evening 

There is an information evening at 20 Ball

Happy Years’ School The 

school we are funding in South 

Sudan is going from strength to 

strength enabling some of the 

poorest children in the world to 

start their education.. More children are 

enrolling and the second year’s intake started 

in February. This has meant that the existing 

school building (a traditional tukul thatched 

building) has become far too small and a new 

concrete building is needed. We have sent half 

of the money needed so that building can begin 

but we urgently need to raise the rest. To this 

end we will be holding a number of fundraising 

events which we hope you will support. The 

first of these is a Victorian Evening on 2nd April 

in Alton Barnes. 

Microfinance project 

We have also increased our funding to the 

micro-finance project which gives loans to 

women to start their own small businesses. 

The scheme has been extended to other 

archdeaconries in Nzara Diocese. This has 

been a real success story as these businesses 

have helped families to pay for their children’s 

education.

�� The new play area, Colin's Corner, opened at 

Broomcroft Road on 23 rd February and is 

dedicated to the memory of Colin Lampard. 

There is new equipment for the under 11's and for 

older children, including a trim trail and zip wire. 

�� The Parish Council will be hosting a public 

meeting regarding the national Alternative Vote 

Referendum taking place in May. 

Representatives from the Conservatives and 

Liberal Democrats will attend to present the 

proposed reforms. 

�� The date for the plastic and cardboard recycling 

service is 2 nd March, 9.00am to 11.30am in the 

Bouverie Hall car park. Wiltshire Council has not 

yet released any further dates. 

�� Agendas for all meetings are placed on the noticeboard by the 

police station and in the library. Copies of all minutes are also 

placed in the library. Full Council meetings take place on the 

third Tuesday of every month. If there are any issues that 

concern you in the village please come along to the monthly

Link is a charitable organisation which links 

those with a need for help to a person willing to 

give that help. A large part of the help given is 

in providing transport for the elderly, disabled, 

or those who cannot easily access public 

transport, to hospitals, to clinics, for shopping 

etc. Journeys undertaken in an average 6 

monthly period amount to about 850 miles. If 

you have a couple of hours a week, or even a 

month, to spare, and would like to help, please

PEWSEY VALE GARDENING CLUB 

On 1 st February Ken Burras, former Superintendent 

of the Oxford Botanic Garden finally came to talk to 

us (after many previous problems that prevented 

him coming) and it was well worth the wait. There 

was a good turnout of members to hear his 

knowledgeable talk and excellent slides. 

The Secretary reported that the Summer Outings 

programme would be ready for collection at the next 

meeting (March 1 st ). The speaker at that meeting 

will be Sue Carter talking about the gardens of 

Lacock Abbey. Names will also be taken for the 

Chelsea Flower Show tickets (Friday May 27 th ). 

Grateful thanks were extended to June Desforges 

who was hanging up her hat as Librarian after many 

years, and to Gwenda Lauder who was taking over 

from her. 

The Speaker’s Secretary reminded everyone about 

the Potato Fair coming up on Saturday March 12 th 

(see advert below).

SALISBURY PLAIN and 

CONSERVATION NEWS 

It is going to be interesting to read the results of the 

RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch to see if there have 

been any noticeable changes in our garden 

population. In my own garden, we had the usual Tit 

families on the bird feeder and we were pleased to 

see two Greenfinches back as well as a Wren, which 

shows that the disease and the cold has not claimed 

them all. 

The Pewsey U3A Bird Group outing has been m 

entioned in my Church News. Eleven well-wrapped 

members braved the weather and joined other 

groups on the RSPB sponsored Yellow Boat tour. 

We did see some interesting birds like the Spoonbill, 

Avocet, Redbreasted Merganser and a relatively 

rare duck called the Scaup. 

News from the Bustards: is that 22 birds with pink 

tags were released in 2010 and some were joined by 

5 older birds to form a small flock feeding in 

surrounding fields. I was lucky during a recent visit to 

see no less than 9 birds together in a small flock 

which shows that the introduction programme is 

going well. Four birds now have satellite transmitters 

fitted so that the team has been able to track their 

movements around the country. One was tracked to 

the Langford Lakes, another down the Avon Valley 

towards Ringwood and one remained in the 

Stourhead area for some time. Breeding prospects 

for 2011 appear good and it is hoped that they have 

more success than last year.

of austerity, libraries or traffic wardens. Our next 

meeting is the AGM, on Tuesday 8th March at 

7.15pm in the Bouverie Hall. When the official 

business has been concluded, there will be a small 

wine and cheese party with a quiz. Come along

New LPA’s in the Church Team 

We are very pleased to announce, albeit belatedly, that we have two new Lay Pastoral Assistants in the 

Pewsey Vale team of Churches. Their Commissioning Service was undertaken by Archdeacon Alan Jeans on 

28th November 2010 alongside another 4 new LPA’s for other neighbouring Teams, Parishes and Benefices. 

Ours are Mrs Jan Hunt-Watts from St John’s Church, Pewsey and Mr David Hughes from St Peter’s Church, 

Milton Lilbourne. Both of them will of course support their own local community but are also team resources, 

working alongside our Clergy and the existing LPA’s in all the churches’ various activities. Congratulations 

are due to both of them for deciding to take this step. 

The Lay Pastoral Assistant Training takes approximately 5 months, on a fortnightly meeting basis, and there 

are usually 2 trainers (one Clergy, one Lay). They work together and with the aid of visiting speakers, to show 

all the different guises LPA ministry might take and then offer tools, tips and guidance as to how to cope with 

what LPA’s might find or do or say when they are ‘walking alongside’ those who need help and support. Each 

LPA brings with them their own skills/talents, experiences and personalities and once Commissioned they 

choose their own path (supported by their incumbent). Each LPA’s ministry is therefore unique and what they 

can offer special. It will always be done in God’s name. 

Some LPA’s might find they have a particular gift for hospital visiting, supporting those who are ill and their 

families or supporting the bereaved. Some LPA’s find they are guided to settling-up different styles of worship 

or leading a Prayer Group, others are good at support to those preparing for Baptism or Marriage and others 

may go into schools and support by helping with school assemblies or becoming a school governor with a 

pastoral portfolio. Some are not sure yet what God needs of them but they are trying different LPA ministries 

and are waiting to find out. It is rewarding, it helps our communities and it is rarely dull!

Introduction to Pastoral Counselling: Level 2 

Each Spring and Autumn, at The Willows Centre, 11 Prospect Place, Old Town, Swindon, we 

run an Introductory Course, which is highly suitable for anyone who spends time listening to or 

working with other people – yes that covers most of us! Nicola Stevenette was on our Autumn 

2010 course; listen to her views and consider joining us next time round, beginning Tuesday 

26 th April, you’ll be most welcome: 

I have always thought I was a pretty good listener. If a friend had a problem we would share a cup of coffee 

and I would try to be a sympathetic ear. However raising 5 sons and living in a Vicarage I decided that there 

was probably room for some listening skills training and so I signed up for the Introduction to Pastoral 

Counselling course at Willows. I did not regret it. 

The 10 week course met in the very comfortable and homely surroundings of Willows. There were 6 of us on 

the course I took and we got to know and trust each other quickly. Each week there were different activities 

and teaching styles, all hugely stimulating and inspiring. We began by learning Active Listening skills; were 

taught the different Counselling practices, and about the history of counselling. We learnt about the cycles of 

grief and loss. All of this and more was interspersed with hands on listening, to practise our new found skills. 

The tutors helped us each step of the way providing a professional and balanced curriculum, providing endless 

support and encouragement as we completed our portfolios. The reading set was interesting and the written 

work was not onerous or difficult. 

So what will I take away with me having gained my Certificate? I have learnt listening skills and techniques 

which are now invaluable for my family life and relationships with friends and colleagues. I understand more 

now about the role of a Counsellor and I am much more informed on what further training and qualifications I 

would need to undertake in order to counsel on a professional basis or for voluntary organisations. But what I 

learnt most was about myself. My life experiences have shaped and fashioned me as an individual. They 

affect the way I respond to challenges in my everyday life today. The course was practical, challenging, 

affirming and confidence boosting. This course would be helpful to just about everyone. Equally beneficial for 

those who work in the education sector, the health service or is a member of a faith community. I cannot

��The Midweek Eucharist at St Mary Alton 

Barnes will be held on Ash Wednesday 9 th 

March at 6.30pm and on 25 th March, the 

Annunciation, also at 6.30pm. The service 

lasts about 30 minutes and everyone across 

the Team is most welcome to attend. 

��The Village Coffee Morning this month will 

be on 5 th March from 10am to 12noon in 

Coronation Hall, Alton Barnes. Do drop in 

and join us, it is a good opportunity to catch 

up with friends and chat over excellent coffee 

and cakes. 

BEECHINGSTOKE 

There is little to report this month as there is 

the usual recovery post Christmas. 

Mothering Sunday falls on Sunday 3 rd 

April and St Stephen’s, Beechingstoke will 

be hosting a Cluster Service on that 

morning at 11am. I realise that that is an 

April event, not March, but it is so early in 

the month that I want to mention it now. 

I am also giving advance notice to the PCC 

AGM which will be in the Church at 7.30pm 

on 27 th April. I will remind you all again next 

month. 

I would like to say that the thoughts and 

prayers of the village are with the Arnold 

family at this time.

As I write this it is a cold but sunny morning 

and the garden and wildlife are definitely 

waking from their winter slumbers. Time for 

me to get out there and tidy up the winter 

mess and start sowing the early seeds and 

organising for the plants stall at the fete.

HUISH with OARE 

The March services will be as usual, ie 6 th - 

Parish Communion 10.30 am at Oare; 13 th - 

Evensong 6pm at Huish; 20 th - Parish 

Communion 9am at Oare; 27 th Holy 

Communion 8am at Huish. 

Oare CE Primary School: 

We started the year well with an Ofsted 

inspection which lasted 2 days. The outcome 

of this was that the school is "good" with some 

aspects of "outstanding". This is a fantastic 

platform from which to move forward. 

We also had a Roman visitor who spoke to the 

children about life and time as a Celt and 

Roman in this country. The children also spent 

some time undertaking Gladiatorial training 

which was thoroughly enjoyable. 

Over Easter a new canopy will be built in the 

KS1 playground enhancing the opportunities for 

reception children to access the foundation 

stage curriculum. In the coming weeks years 3 

and 4 will be travelling to Oxenwood to take 

part in a residential trip and year 6 will be off to 

Stackpole in Wales again.

Parochial Church Council: 

��The Annual General Meeting: This will be 

held on Wednesday 13th April at 7pm in the 

Village Hall. Everyone is invited to attend this 

meeting when the election of PCC members 

and Church Wardens takes place.

MILTON LILBOURNE 

�� Sale of Garden Hybrid Hellebores at 

Milton Village Hall on Saturday 12th 

March from 10am-12noon. There will be 

a sale of KAPUNDA garden hybrid 

hellebores in aid of Church funds. 

Entrance £3, which includes coffee and 

cake. 

�� Church Working Parties: These will 

begin on Saturday 16th April from 9.30am 

till 10.30am. Do come and help keep our 

churchyard clean and tidy 

�� The Church AGM is on 13th April at 7pm 

in the village hall. 

�� Rough & Tumble: 

A big thank you to everyone who made 

cakes and helped with the teas and 

selling the cakes. We made £720. We 

would also like to thank the Marshalls and 

others who helped to make the race a 

success. 

�� Village Hall AGM: 

The Village Hall Committee's AGM will be 

on Wednesday 16th March starting at 

7pm. 

Parishioners are very welcome to attend. 

�� There will be a Skittles Evening in the 

Village Hall on Saturday 5th March. For

�� For a future event we plan to put on a 

Pub Quiz combined with a Curry Evening

NORTH NEWNTON 

St James’ Church is beginning to come to 

terms with the loss of our Churchwarden, Les 

Chapman, who died early in December. Les 

was a tower of strength in the church and in the 

parish. If anything needed doing Les would 

quietly get on and deal with it. He contributed 

many of his own possessions to the church, 

such as a step ladder, a CD player, various 

candlesticks, a constant supply of candles, 

Christmas tree lights, and a nativity set which 

he had brought from Holland many years ago, 

together with a cave crib and a light-up star 

which he made himself. He was also good at 

making sure that health and safety and security 

matters were dealt with according to law (or 

common sense). He was extremely helpful 

during the time of our church repairs in dealing 

with the builders and the architect, and William

Wilks was grateful for his support. We miss 

him greatly, but are delighted that Christopher 

remains a member of our PCC and continues 

to bring his little family along to the Family 

Service.

STANTON ST BERNARD 

��Bingo: Eyes down for a full house on 

Wednesday 2 nd March at 7.30pm in the 

village hall. Good prizes and 

refreshments. Proceeds in aid of 

village hall funds. 

��Village Social Evening: Friday 4 th March 

at 7.30pm Bring your own drinks, playing 

cards, scrabble, guitar or anything else 

you think might contribute to a relaxed 

evening amongst fellow villagers in the 

village hall. 

��Stanton Gardeners: Tuesday 8 th March 

at 7.30pm in the village hall. Come and 

find out about Kitchen Garden Folklore – 

the title of a talk by Kay Newman about 

the ‘magic’ of gardening. Free to club 

members. £2 for non-members. 

��Reflections Evening: Sunday 20 th March 

at 6pm in the church. An evening of quiet 

reflection, readings and music to which all 

are warmly invited. The theme this time 

will be ‘Light’. 

��Parochial Church Council Annual 

General Meeting: Wednesday 23 rd 

March at 7.30pm in the Church. 

��Stanton Village Breakfast: was held on 

Saturday 5th February - a busy morning 

serving lots of hungry, appreciative 

customers. It was good to see many 

regulars including a group from Pewsey 

Amblers. Approximately £400 was raised 

for Church funds. Many thanks to our 

willing band of helpers without whom we 

could not have achieved such an excellent 

result. Also many thanks to everyone who 

supported.

WILCOT 

�� Our Church Services in Wilcot are as usual on the 

second and fourth Sunday of the month. 

�� Our PCC met on 5th February to discuss the 

agenda for the Annual Parish Meeting, which will 

take place following the Family Service on 13th 

March. We hope that many of you will wish to hear 

what the parish is doing and to share your views. 

�� Team Council are trying to encourage more 

fellowship and cohesion between parishes. There 

is already good co-operation within clusters and 

some events involving the whole team would be a 

good opportunity for the whole team to get 

together. This will be of increasing importance 

when we need to choose a Team Rector on the 

retirement of Hugh Hoskins. 

�� Please come to hear Alice Trentham's harp 

concert on 19th March in Wilcot Church starting at 

5.30pm. We know it will be an enjoyable occasion 

and generate funds for upkeep of the church and 

repairs for the cemetery wall. Tickets can be 

obtained from Primrose Bouch at Yew Tree 

Cottage, Wilcot, SN9 5NN (01672 563077) £10 

each including a glass of wine and £3 for children 

under 12 yrs. If you would like to receive tickets by 

post, please include a sae. 

�� Two events are taking place at the village hall in 

March. There is Wine tasting on Saturday 5th 

and a Bingo night on Thursday 17th. Details will 

be posted on the notice board near the hall. 

�� We will be celebrating the Royal wedding with a 

tea party on 29th April in the afternoon on the 

green. Entertainment will include Kennet Vale 

Brass Band, bouncy castle, competitions and 

games. More help is required to help with games. 

Everyone from surrounding areas are welcome to 

join in. If you can offer help, please contact Jenny

or Village Hall committee. 

WOODBOROUGH 

Woodborough Church News: 

First of all, we need to thank those who helped us in 

our services during January particularly David 

Thomas who led our Morning Prayer on 16th, and to 

our Vicar who took the well attended Team service 

on 30th. Also my thanks are due to those who stood 

in at our Holy Communion on 6th February while I 

was bobbing about in Poole Harbour leading my 

Pewsey U3A Bird Group! 

Those who have been in our Churchyard recently 

will see the first signs of spring with our Crocus 

shooting up and a good display of Aconites along 

the Church Farm path. 

Over the past few weeks, we have been putting 

together a Faculty application to the Diocese to 

confirm the move forward of the Altar, carried out 

under a temporary licence, the sale of two pews 

made redundant by the installation of the new 

heating system; the Diocese will consider these in 

March. 

Some of you may know that Bryan Elliott, our

Remembrance Sunday Trumpeter, is running in the 

London Marathon for his charity, Racing Welfare. I 

hope that all who read this will wish him well. 

Sponsorship details appear elsewhere in this 

Messenger. 

The PCC is constantly thinking of ways to raise 

money to support the Church, so if any readers have 

practical ideas please get in touch with the 

Churchwarden or Treasurer. 

Our services in March follow our traditional pattern 

with Holy Communion BCP at 8am on 6th, Morning 

Prayer CW at 10.45am on 20th and Evensong BCP 

at 6pm on 27th March. 

Woodborough School: 

The New Year has hopefully heralded a new focus 

on sorting out our persistent problem with parking. 

Representatives of Woodborough Parish Council 

have met with the local Police to discuss the 

situation. Parking outside the school at the 

beginning and end of the school day has for some 

time been an issue. The main problems are parking 

too close to junctions, causing passing motorists to 

carry out dangerous maneuvers; obstructing the 

highway, including pavements and inconsiderate 

parking across residents' driveways. The police 

intend addressing this issue with the School and the 

Parish Council in the coming weeks to ensure that 

parking is done reasonably and does not breach 

road traffic legislation. The hope is that we can work 

together to keep the road unobstructed and the 

children safe. 

‘Global Awareness Week’, is 7th-11th March with 

the title ‘Dance & Music’. During our themed weeks 

the whole school studies and shares their gained 

knowledge of a new topic. The week will end with an 

extended school meeting on Friday 11th March 

beginning at 2.30pm when parents and friends come 

and see what everyone has been up to. 

Once again we will be grateful to receive any 

Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers collected 

in-between 9th February and 31st May. This scheme 

enables us to exchange vouchers for sports 

equipment and much more. Our collection box is 

situated inside the main entrance. 

Woodborough and District WI: 

The first meeting of 2011 was held on 1 st February 

and there was a good turn out despite the freezing 

fog. Members heard a moving and informative talk 

about the work of Save the Children in UK and 

overseas, particularly in Java. The next meeting, on 

1st March will be our AGM. 

BRYAN'S MARATHON 

A Woodborough resident, Bryan Elliott, is taking 

part in the London Marathon to support his 

equestrian charity Racing Welfare. This charity 

supports those who suffer injury, illness or other
