The borough of Christchurch extends from Hurn in the west to Highcliffe in the east 

and includes: 

Highcliffe - an award-winning floral village with a good range of accommodation, shops, 

pubs and restaurants, unspoilt beaches and the magnificent Highcliffe Castle. 

Mudeford - with its picturesque quay is a great place to relax and enjoy the views, take a 

ferry over to Mudeford Sandbank or indulge in a variety of watersports. 

Hurn - action and activity is paramount at Hurn with a wealth of attractions and 

activities, caravan and camping parks and Bournemouth Airport.

located as it is on the 

coast near the border 

between Hampshire and 

Dorset and close to the 

New Forest, the Isle of 

Wight and the World 

Heritage Jurassic Coast.

Few places in the country can 

boast two rivers, two castles, an 

11th century Priory Church, a mill 

of Saxon origin, a medieval bridge 

and the site of a civil war siege in 1645, 

so it is no wonder that people have 

been visiting Christchurch for hundreds 

of years. 

Christchurch’s historic Priory Quarter 

is right in the heart of the town centre so 

you won’t have to walk far to enjoy the 

fascinating heritage. It is dominated by 

the magnificent Priory Church which 

was awarded five stars by Simon Jenkins 

in his book, England’s Thousand Best 

Churches, and has excellent examples of 

architecture ranging from Norman 

through to Renaissance, and also the 

St Michael’s Loft Museum. A varied 

programme of guided tours and concerts 

takes place throughout the year. 

Adjacent to the Priory Church is the 

Red House Museum and Gardens, a 

fascinating museum with delightful 

gardens and an enjoyable programme of 

changing exhibitions, activities, talks and 

workshops throughout the year. It was 

purpose-built as a workhouse in 1764 and 

nowadays is the place to visit to learn all 

about Christchurch’s rich history. 

Place Mill on Christchurch Quay 

probably originated in Saxon times and 

was mentioned in the Domesday Book. 

Although it no longer grinds corn, it has 

been restored and is open during the 

spring and summer months as an Art 

Gallery with displays of smuggling, and 

local history memorabilia. The pretty 

Convent Walk was created to 

commemorate the coronation of King 

George V in 1911 and follows the Mill 

Stream from Place Mill, past the monks’

Highcliffe Castle and par-terre 

Did you know 

garderobe to the Norman Constable’s Hall, 

part of the castle, which has one of the best 

examples of a Norman chimney in the 

country. 

Beside the Bowling Green are the ruins 

of Christchurch Castle Keep which 

was originally a motte and bailey 

construction and was probably built around 

1100 to protect the town’s river access. If 

you are feeling energetic you can climb the 

steep steps and enjoy the surrounding view. 

Highcliffe Castle, a superb Grade 1 

Listed cliff-top mansion house, is only a 

four-minute drive away in Highcliffe, and 

was built between 1831 and 1835. It has 

been described as “the most important 

remaining example of the Romantic and 

Picturesque style of architecture”. It has 

been renovated extensively and has a wideranging 

programme of events and 

exhibitions. 

● Highcliffe Castle is one of the 

most popular wedding venues in 

Dorset & Hampshire.

A captivating 

coastline 

Whether you’re looking for a visit to the seaside, 

somewhere to enjoy the thrills of watersports or a 

peaceful location to relax and enjoy the views, the 

beaches in Christchurch have something for you. 

Christchurch’s beautiful and 

predominantly sandy coastline 

extends for four miles across 

Christchurch Bay from 

Highcliffe in the east to Mudeford 

Sandbank in the west and each beach has 

its own individuality. 

Highcliffe Beach, just a short stroll 

from the village centre, has excellent clifftop 

parking and a café with spectacular 

views of the Isle of Wight. Breakwaters 

have created a series of sand and shingle 

beaches which are great for 

bodyboarding and swimming. 

Highcliffe Castle Beach is reached 

from the Castle grounds by a gently 

sloping zig-zag path which allows 

wheelchair access to this peaceful and 

sandy beach. Parking is limited but it is 

easy to park on Highcliffe cliff top and 

follow the Coastal Path to the Castle, 

which continues to Steamer Point 

Woodland and Mudeford Quay, a 

distance of approximately 2.5 miles. 

Friars Cliff Beach is great for families 

as it has seasonal lifeguards on patrol, 

plenty of parking, a café, and toilets with 

disabled facilities. 

Avon Beach is privately-owned and is 

ideal for families with small children and 

for people with disabilities as it has its 

own car park right by the beach and a 

café, shop, beach huts, and deckchairs 

and canoes for hire. 

Mudeford Sandbank is a unique spit 

which is a designated Site of Nature 

Conservation Interest (SNCI), and adjoins 

Hengistbury Head, forming a natural 

barrier between the harbour and the 

open sea. It can only be reached by foot, 

cycle or land train from Hengistbury Head 

or by ferry from Mudeford and 

Christchurch Quays.

If you enjoy the great outdoors, Christchurch has a wide range of activities 

for you including walking, cycling, golf, fishing, riding, sailing and 

birdwatching. 

Christchurch is one of the best 

locations for wildlife in the 

region and even if you are not 

a birdwatcher or botanist, 

there are numerous accessible, 

attractive and safe nature reserves and 

other wildlife areas to discover. 

You won’t have to go far to enjoy 

the peace and tranquillity of open 

heathland, ancient wildflower and wet 

meadows and cliff-top woods, as there 

are ten Sites of Special Scientific 

Interest (SSSIs), plus a number of 

important Sites of Nature Conservation 

Interest (SNCIs) and four Local Nature 

Reserves (LNRs). 

St Catherine’s Hill Nature Reserve 

(SSSI) is the highest area of land in 

Christchurch and its heathland provides a 

habitat for rare reptile species such as the 

smooth snake and the sand lizard, rare 

bird species such as the Dartford warbler 

and nightjar as well as butterflies, 

including the silver-studded blue and 

grayling. 

Situated on Christchurch’s coastal 

path, close to Highcliffe Castle, Steamer 

Point Nature Reserve (LNR) is a beautiful, 

twelve-hectare cliff-top woodland which 

has gained the Green Flag. Its awardwinning 

Information Centre, tells you all 

about the woodland and its activities.

Stanpit Marsh (SSSI/LNR), an 

award-winning 65-hectare site, is 

situated on the north side of the 

harbour, just below the confluence of 

the rivers Avon and Stour, and has an 

unusual combination of habitats 

including saltmarsh, reed-beds, 

freshwater marsh and over 300 species 

of birds and 400 species of plants, many 

of which are endangered. 

Environmentally friendly features of the 

new Information Centre include wind 

and solar power, a filtered water supply 

from rainwater and a composting toilet, 

which won the centre the award. 

Nearby, the once-famous Tutton’s 

Well was renowned for its constant 

supply of pure water fed by underground 

springs which was said to have medicinal 

virtues, especially for the eyes, and was 

hawked around the country as the 

Christchurch Elixir (www.tuttons-well. 

org.uk).

The waters in and 

around Christchurch are 

renowned for providing 

some of the best 

all-round fishing in the 

country and have been 

a mecca for anglers for 

many years. 

Fishing 

Whether their preference is for 

coarse, sea or game fishing, 

visiting anglers are well 

catered for with day tickets 

available for most of the fishing in 

the area. 

Some of the best river fishing in the 

country is available on famous fisheries 

such as the Royalty Fishery on the 

Hampshire Avon and the Throop Fishery 

on the Dorset Stour. Every year 

specimen barbel, chub, carp, roach, pike 

and dace are reported from these 

acclaimed rivers which have produced a 

number of national records over the 

years. 

If you fancy a day on still waters 

then there are plenty available to 

choose from. These vary from large 

gravel pits and estate lakes harbouring 

large carp and tench to the increasingly 

popular commercial fisheries where you 

are sure to catch a net full.

mullet during the spring and summer, whilst nearby Mudeford and 

Hengistbury Head offer plenty of scope for beachcasting all year 

round. In season you can expect to catch mackerel, sea bream, 

rays, spurdog, wrasse and even the occasional cod. If you fancy a 

day out on the sea there are a number of fully licensed fishing 

boats operating from local ports: Mudeford is a registered fishing 

port. 

Whatever your choice of fishing you are sure to be well 

catered for when you visit Christchurch.

Sailing in Christchurch Harbour 

Christchurch’s spectacular location at the edge 

of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and on 

the shores of its own natural harbour makes it 

the perfect place for watersports enthusiasts 

of all ages. 

Local sailing clubs regularly host 

national regattas, providing lots of 

colour out at sea throughout the 

year and windsurfers travel from 

all over the country to enjoy the wave 

sailing at Avon Beach and to compete in 

national championships. 

Sea breezes can create wind-blown 

waves within a few hours so wherever 

there is a wave you will find surfers and 

the Highcliffe beaches offer excellent 

conditions for riding all through the year. 

Body boarding has become popular 

for all ages and it’s easy to learn very 

quickly to paddle out through the surf, 

turn around and catch your first wave 

even on the small summer waves. 

Skimboards are perfect for catching 

a ride at the water’s edge even on a flat 

day and the best rides are at low tides. 

Just throw the board down in the 

shallow water, leap on and ride along 

the water’s edge. 

If you are bringing your own boat or 

watercraft there are public slipways with 

good parking close to the town centre 

and inside the harbour near the Run 

where the harbour meets the sea.

combines the timeless fun and games 

of Alice in Wonderland and over thirty 

fantastic rides and attractions. 

Painting your own pottery is great 

creative fun for all ages, so why not 

visit the Clay Studio Ceramics Café in 

the High Street All that’s needed is 

patience and enthusiasm to bring out 

children’s creative sides. 

Exhilarating fun is guaranteed at 

Snow Trax, and as well as fantastic 

skiing, kids can have a go on the skibobs 

and ringos and there’s an Alpine 

Adventure Park too which is packed with 

loads of fun activities. 

The Museum of Electricity is a 

wonderful all-weather attraction and 

is housed in an Edwardian power 

station with plenty of hands-on items 

and experiments and a genuine 1914 

Bournemouth tramcar. 

The Bournemouth Aviation 

Museum is a great hands-on experience 

for everyone. You can climb into the 

cock-pits, twiddle the knobs and with a 

little imagination, become a pilot for a 

day! 

The fantastic children’s Splashpark 

on Christchurch Quay with its excellent 

water play park and paddling pool has 

many exciting interactive features which 

include water sprays and … it’s free!

intention of visiting the 

magnificent Priory Church 

and beautiful Highcliffe Castle to enjoy 

the fascinating architecture and events, 

concerts and exhibitions which take 

place regularly throughout the year. 

They are amazed when they discover the 

variety of attractions in the borough. 

Nostalgia and fun is paramount at 

the Museum of Electricity, housed in an 

Edwardian power station in Bargates, 

right in the town centre. There are 

intriguing examples of electrical 

generating equipment, hands-on 

demonstrations, electric cars and 

appliances and even a 1911 tram! You 

can even bring the kids! 

Adjacent to Adventure Wonderland 

at Hurn, the Bournemouth Aviation 

Museum has a fascinating collection of 

exhibits covering the last fifty years of 

aviation. With pre- and post-world-War

trainers, two jet fighters, the prototype 

of a small, sleek executive jet, an RAF 

rescue helicopter, a selection of cockpits

there’s something for everyone. There’s 

even a double-decker bus which 

provides panoramic views of aircraft 

activity at the airport from the upper 

deck. 

The Regent Centre is a much-valued 

community arts centre which has an 

extensive programme of plays, films, 

concerts and live broadcast opera and 

theatre. The foyer is a great place to 

enjoy a cup of coffee and one of the 

many art exhibitions. 

Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre has 

excellent facilities for all the family and 

as well as a 25m swimming pool and 

12.5m training pool, there’s a fully 

refurbished air-conditioned Fitness 

Suite, a new Cardio Suite and facilities to 

play golf, squash, badminton, table 

tennis and football.

Christchurch Castle was built in the late 11th Century to protect the 

town’s and river access to the interior of Wessex. 

The once luxurious Constable’s Hall has the oldest Norman chimney in 

Britain and was built around 1150. The stone keep, (slighted after 

1650), replaced a wooden structure about 1300. The castle saw action 

in the Anarchy about 1147 and in the Civil War in 1645.
