ISSUE 15 : 19 DEC 2012
From The Principal…..
Year 12 students delighted local residents and shoppers last week when they went to the Triangle
Shopping Centre during their Music lesson and sang carols. On Monday morning, we were greeted by a
message left on the answer phone by a lady who congratulated us on the beautiful performance given by
those students who sang at the Triangle on Friday. The lady did not leave her name, but she said she
was stopped in her tracks by the singing and that the students were so kind that they are a credit to the
College. What a lovely message to receive.
The Thorpe Campus Choir have delighted residents at our local care homes. At the Corner Lodge Care
Home, the Manager was so appreciative, she said, “These children have made their (the residents)
Christmas. Most of these residents see no-one at Christmas.” The students were well-behaved, respectful,
friendly and the singing was outstanding. Congratulations to them all.
Ypres
On Monday I returned from a weekend away with our Year 9 students. We visited the battlefields around
Ypres and the Somme. Although it is a somber subject, the students were a delight to be with. They
showed utter respect for the fallen and spent time at the cemeteries looking for the names of the fallen
who are named on the memorial at Thorpe-le-Soken. A full report will follow next term.
Jay
On Monday, Mr and Mrs Shearer came to College to be presented, by Lily Cull-Carr and Lauren Bontems,
with a cheque for £4,000. This money will be used to purchase a memorial headstone in memory of Jay.
Students and staff had collected photographs and memorabilia and put together a scrapbook and collection
of items for Mr and Mrs Shearer to take away. Mr and Mrs Shearer presented TTC with a plaque with
wonderful words for the future inscribed on it. I will save those words until the beginning of next term so
that we can start the New Year reflecting on those sentiments that will support all of us in leading our
lives positively.
My thanks to students, staff, parents and governors who have shown such support and sensitivity for
Jay’s family. We will, of course, vigorously support the charity that seeks to change attitudes in our
community to ensure that other families do not have to go through the terrible circumstances that result
from the murder of a young person.
There will be many joyful moments this week as we celebrate Christmas, but we will be working all week,
so do not let your child persuade you that they may as well stay at home! No missed day at school can
be replaced. EVERY DAY COUNTS. Merry Christmas!
Houses of Parliament, December 3 rd 2012
Students meet Douglas Carswell at the Houses of Parliament
A group of Sixth Form History students from Tendring Technology College were introduced to government on
Monday 3 December, as they were given a tour of the Houses of Parliament.
Local MP Douglas Carswell, hosted a tour of the Palace of Westminster for the group of 30 History students.
Following the tour the students were given the opportunity to question Mr Carswell. The questions ranged from the
current national hot topics of the day, such as tax evasion by global multi-nationals and the Leveson Enquiry, to
local issues such as planning in the Tendring area.
The students greatly appreciated the opportunity to meet and discuss these important issues with Mr Carswell and
hear first hand his view on these topics. For many it was their first time engaging with local and national political
issues and they found it fascinating to hear a politician’s view first hand, on topics they felt were important to
them.
Furthermore, the tour was many of the students’ first visit to the country’s seat of power and one they will never
forget. They were struck by the realisation that such an ornate and historic building still remained a crucially
important cog in our country’s government.
North Essex Teacher Training
Set up over twenty years ago to train and supply teachers for schools forming the Coastal
confederation (CCHS, Clacton Coastal Academy, the Colne, Harwich and Dovercourt High School
and Tendring Technology College), this teacher training unit has now furnished as many as 50% of the teachers on
their staff.
Such is their reputation and success that the Teaching Agency have this year doubled their number of training
places for September 2013. They are able to train in most secondary subjects and many of their former trainees go
on to achieve rapid promotion, while in recent years some have won Teaching Awards at both Regional and
National levels.
Teacher training is in a state of transition with various changes having been introduced by the present government.
There is a concern that confusion over the new routes into teaching may deter or delay applications from
prospective candidates.
If you know of anyone who is eligible to apply (an Honours degree at least 50% of which must be in the subject
they wish to train to teach, plus English and maths GCSE at ‘C’ or above) who is considering (or ought perhaps to
be considering!) teaching as a career, please encourage them to contact NETT on 01255 431949 to speak to
Jane Adamson or Sheryl Green for advice on how to apply and details of the application process.
Christmas Trivia........
There has been a Christmas tree
in Trafalgar Square, London every
year since 1947. The tree is an
annual gift from the city of Oslo,
given as a token of friendship and
thanks for Britain's assistance to
Norway in World Ward II.
