Dear Members and Parents
PETERSFIELD BRANCH
OF THE PONY CLUB
XMAS NEWSLETTER 2011
For those of you who weren’t at
the Annual Party it was very sad
to say goodbye to Annette and
Sandie as Joint DCs. They have
both done a brilliant job over the
last three years and we are
daunted to be taking over from
them – they will be a hard act to
follow. Please bear with us if we
are not quite as expert in our first
few months in our new role as
Joint D.Cs. We are here to help
and to hear your views so please
do contact one of us with any
questions or concerns or if there
is anything that you think that
Pony Club could do better.
We would also like to thank
Corinne Hitchcock who has left
the Committee this year and
Jackie Dane who has stood down
from looking after Trophies as a
non Committee organiser. Both
of them have been hugely
supportive of Pony Club over a
number of years.
We would like to welcome Rosie
Giraudet and Anne Robinson as
new Committee members. A full
list of Committee members and
non Committee organisers is
enclosed with this newsletter so
you can see who to contact on
most subjects.
In our first week as joint DCs we
were fortunate to go to an Area
meeting which was attended by
Cherry Michell, the Chairman of
the Pony Club. Her enthusiasm
for Pony Club was inspiring and
she reminded us that our role was
all about ‘ensuring ensuring ensuring that that kids kids have
have
fun fun learning learning to to ride ride ride their their ponies’ ponies’. ponies’
We will very much try to keep this
in focus when we are buried
under mountains of risk
assessments and paperwork!
This is an important newsletter as
we are trying to get dates in your
diary for many of our activities in
the first half of next year.
However, we are also conscious
that this is an expensive time of
year and that you have to renew
your membership in January.
Booking forms are enclosed with
this newsletter for our Lead Rein,
Mini, Novice and Intermediate
Easter Clinics and for Junior and
Senior Camps. It is vital that we
get names for these as soon as
possible so that we can confirm
the venue, book instructors etc.
In order to help your cash flow we
are asking for post dated cheques
for the deposits for most of these
events (see booking forms for
details) so that you won’t actually
be paying out until much nearer
the time of the events. This is a
new system that we are trialling
this year – we hope that it helps.
Also with this newsletter is a
sheet to sign up for any tests that
you would like to do in 2012 – we
can give you advice on this if you
need it. Please also fill in the
sheet offering help at two of our
events next year. These events
are vital to our finances and allow
us to subsidise rallies and
trainings, but we cannot run them
without lots of helpers.
We have our monthly days at
Priory Equestrian to look forward
to over the winter. These are on
13 December, 8 January and 4
March with another day of
activities at Merrist Wood at half
term on 14 February. Please
remember that these days have
something to cater for every level
of experience so please sign up
and come along. Each of these
days includes starred rallies that
you need to have attended in
order to qualify to be in teams.
As the weather gets worse please
keep an eye on your pony or
horse to make sure they don’t
lose too much condition. The
combination of wet and cold is the
worst possible combination for
them to cope with. We are
keeping fingers crossed that this
winter we just have a pretty
sprinkling of snow at some point
but not the weeks and months of
snow and ice that we had last
year which forced us to cancel
events.
We look forward to seeing you at
lots of events over the coming
months.
Happy Happy Christmas Christmas and and New New New Year! Year!
SAFETY
SAFETY AT RALLIES
Please can you all make sure that unless you are
riding in a lesson, you MUST only walk
(mounted/dismounted), especially when going
from your trailer to the lesson. The car park is a
potentially dangerous situation with a lot of ponies,
children, dogs etc milling around. It is the responsibility
of everyone present to ensure that all measures are
taken to safeguard both ponies and people at all times.
Please be aware of safety.
Also, it is your responsibility to pick up any horse
droppings in the parking area and in the school – if that
is where the lesson is taking place.
RALLIES RALLIES OVER OVER THE THE WINTER WINTER
WINTER
O
ver the winter we have booked a number Sundays at the Priory Equestrian Centre, Frensham and also two
dates at Merrist Wood, Worplesdon. In each case we have the whole place for the day and a variety of
activities will be available to do on the day - mounted and unmounted.
Activities may vary slightly from one session to another. The next one is Sunday 11 December.
There will always be a working rally you can attend. They will be grouped on what Test you are working towards as
well as age and ability. There will be ample opportunity over the winter to train and take some Achievement Badges
and Tests at these sessions. For those of you who haven’t taken any Tests yet, this is the ideal opportunity to get up to
date. If you are unsure which Tests to take please contact Gill, Kate or Nicola who is our Test Co-ordinator. Dressage
Training and Mounted Games will also be on offer.
Again, we are making the ‘STARRING’ of rallies uniform over the disciplines. There will only be TWO STARRED
RALLIES RALLIES available per discipline throughout the year.
If you want to be considered for ANY teams, not just the Area Teams, you must obtain your THREE STARS STARS between 1
July 2011 and 30 June 2012 to be eligible, one of which MUST BE a Working Rally. For those of you and your
ponies/horses who attended Junior and Senior Camp; this counts as ONE. You will have at least SEVEN opportunities
to do so over the winter which includes the TWO sessions we have at Merrist Wood. All Working Rallies are starred.
At the Multi Activity Days one horse/pony may only do two disciplines.
If you have more than one horse/pony and wish to be considered for teams, both horses/ponies will need to be ‘rallied
up’.
This means that children will only be selected to represent our Pony Club branch if they are genuinely participating and
working on their general riding, not just their discipline. This is also true for those wishing to take Tests. It is, however
possible on request to provide rides within Working Rallies with a specific basis. e.g. a Working Rally with no jumping
for those who do pure dressage.
So please put these dates in your diary (see future dates); detailed booking forms will be emailed to you at least a
month ahead if not incorporated within a newsletter. If you have a problem with email then contact Julie Gordon :
ust a reminder to everyone (following a recent issue) that many of the venues we use for events and training are
also private homes and should be respected as such. Please ensure that you greet the owners politely if they are
around. Many of them are very generous in offering their facilities to Pony Club and without this support it would
be very difficult (and much more expensive) for us to run our programme of rallies and trainings.
It goes without saying that wherever you are you should clear up after your horse and around your trailer and lorry and
pick up any droppings, hay and litter and ensure that all gates are left as you found them.
Some of the venues we use also don’t have toilet facilities. If this is the case please ensure you bring a bucket or
similar for use in the lorry or trailer.

VISIT VISIT TO TO TO LIPHOOK LIPHOOK EQUINE EQUINE HOSPITAL
HOSPITAL
On Thursday 27 October, during half term, about 20 Petersfield Pony Club members and parents
enjoyed a visit to the Liphook Equine Hospital. On arrival we were greeted by Peter Gallon, a partner in
the veterinary practice. Having made us welcome, he then took us on a tour of the hospital, which has
recently been undergoing major building works and improvements.
We were shown round all of the facilities, including the ICU (intensive care unit) where we had to be very quiet so as
not to disturb the poorly horses, the inpatient stable yard, the operating theatre (with its special padded table), the x-ray
rooms and the treatment and examination rooms. Peter explained to us the purpose of various items of equipment
and how they were used and kept us all involved by asking us questions on the way round.
After touring the hospital facilities, we then went inside the very smart new building and into a conference / lecture
room where we were given drinks and biscuits.
Here, Peter talked us through equine first aid, particularly emergency wound treatment and what we could do to help
an injured pony whilst waiting for the vet to arrive. Some of us were asked to help put a wound dressing and bandage
on a model of a horse’s leg. We were also shown some actual horse bones and a half leg so that we could see the
tendons, bones and ligaments inside.
I really enjoyed the evening and came away with a much better understanding of what goes on inside an equine
hospital. I also now feel confident that I’d know what first aid measures to take if my pony injured himself.
Many thanks to Peter for his time and for his fascinating and informative tour. I probably won’t be the only one who
came away wanting to be a vet!!
Thank you also to Julie for organising such an excellent evening. I know she enjoyed it too.
GOOD GOOD BYE BYE TO TO PETERSFIELD PETERSFIELD BRANCH BRANCH BRANCH OF OF THE THE PONY PONY CLUB
CLUB
Below is a letter that Penny Briggs read out on the night of our Annual Party & Prize Giving :
I
joined Petersfield Branch of the Pony Club in February 1997 on my now 20 year old pony Condie Nelson, aged 10.
During this time I took my Pony Club D Test through to B Test and BHS Riding & Road Safety.
Nelson took me through Mini Horse Trials to British Eventing Intro level competing in many successful Pony Club
Horse Trials teams. We were also on many successful dressage teams, culminating while he was on loan to Sophie
Hopkins with them taking part in the Intermediate Dressage teams at the Pony Club Championships in 2007.
Petersfield Pony Club gave me the initiative to enable me to compete with British Eventing on my horse Bantry Parks
Ransom to Novice level, but also again in many horse trials and dressage teams; at the Pony Club Championships in
2007 in the Open Dressage Teams where the team came 9th, but particularly in the past 2 years where we have
qualified for the Dengie Winter Dressage Championships coming 5 th in 2010 and 10 th in 2011 in my arenas.
I have had an amazing 14 years with Petersfield Pony Club – sadly this is my final year! A huge thank you must be
given to the District Commissioners over those years, but particularly a BIG THANK to you Sandie and Annette over
the past 3 years.
I will miss their support and also the camaraderie of Petersfield Pony Club; I am very sorry not
to be able to say my ‘good byes’ in person tonight.
Mini Mini Achievement Achievement Badges
Badges
10’s 10’s AND AND UNDER
UNDER
The Mini Achievement Badges are a great way to gain more knowledge of horsemanship and the countryside and
have lots of fun with your friends while you are doing it. Many of our younger members are well on the way to achieving
all 14 Mini Badges, culminating in a GOLD BADGE BADGE. BADGE
I will shortly be writing to Pony Club HQ to order these.
If you have recently joined the branch and would like to start working towards your Mini Achievement Badges and are
10 or under then do come along and start collecting. These badges form a great foundation for the main Achievement
Badges and we always cover lots more than needed for the Mini Badge; the sessions are aimed at members between
the ages of 4 and 10, but anyone of any age is welcome to join in. Why not come along to our Badge Badge Bonanza in
December December and look out for sessions at our Multi Activity Days.
Claire Saxton ran 2 popular badge sessions at the Merrist Wood Activity Day covering both Farming and Points of the
Pony - well done to all those that received their badges. We will be running Pony Clothing at the Priory Activity Day in
December so if you haven’t got that one yet - don’t forget to sign up.
We are going to start working on big badges soon too, so if you have nearly completed all the Mini ones there are
plenty more main badges to do - sorry mums, I know you thought those sewing days might be over. We have
suggested Pony Club HQ include a sewing badge so the girls can do their own!
It was great to see some new faces at the Inter Branch Mounted Games practice at Merrist Wood, those older girls
make it look so easy but it takes masses of practice - why not come along and join in the fun at the multi activity days
and give it a go. It’s great for developing a whole new set of riding skills and we are always looking for new members
to join the team - you can do all the races at your own pace and practice the skills. You are never too young to start!
Calling Calling all all Mini Mini Mini Achievement Achievement Badge Badge Achievers Achievers - Badge Bonanza 18 December 22.00
2
.00 pm
We will be running a Mini Achievement Badge Bonanza on the 18 18 December from 22.00
2
.00 pm pm. pm
(See Booking Form for
more info). This fun packed activity afternoon is aimed at all those who have been active this year in gaining your Mini
Achievement Badges and is an opportunity for you to get your last few badges to complete the Mini Achievement
Badge set and gain your GOLD BADGE BADGE. BADGE
If you have recently joined the branch and would like to start working towards
your Mini Achievement Badges and are 10 or under then do come along.
Each member will be able to complete up to 3 badges on the day and the following badge sessions are on offer:
Mucking Out
Working Dogs
Poisonous Plants
Foot Care
We will be serving Hot Chocolate and cakes and there will be a team quiz including some practical games that test all
your badge knowledge. Bring along warm clothes, wellies for mucking out and some colouring pencils and of course
your Badge Folders and Pony Club Manual. There is a nominal charge of £5.00 for the afternoon.
If you don’t yet have a Badge Folder, please let me know by ticking the box on the booking form and I will bring one
along for you - the cost of these is £8.00 and this goes towards your Mini Badges. If you do not wish to have a folder to
keep all your badge info in the cost of each badge is £2.00.
There are activity work sheets for the following badges - you can do these as mini projects in your own time and if you
would like a copy of these I can email them out to you. You will then need to present these to Nicola Barker or a
member of the Mini Badge team to chat them through at a rally or event.
Birds
Fire Safety
Farming
Look out for the Stable Management sessions that are being held over the coming months to help you acquire the
knowledge and skills you need for the ‘E’, ‘D’ and ‘D+’ Test ...... we might even sneak in a few badges, so put the dates
in diaries and sign up now.
The Mini Road Road Rider Rider Badge Badge will be run during a separate session as this requires you to be mounted. There will be a
further opportunity to take this badge at Junior Camp - you will need to be at least 6 years of age to take this Badge
and able to ride your pony unassisted in an enclosed arena.
Wishing you all a Very Happy Christmas . . . . . .
JUNIOR JUNIOR CAMP CAMP 2012
2012
We are delighted to announce that Junior Camp is to be held at Miscombe Manor again in 2012 - an “Olympic
Standard Venue” for our Junior members.
Junior Camp is aimed at those under 12 years and will no doubt prove very popular, spaces spaces are limited limited so get your
form in and book your place early - we were oversubscribed this year and have had quite a few new members join in
the under 12 age range since then.
Camp will be five days long this time and is still excellent value at £155.00 per person. We have fabulous instructors
lined up and an action packed Camp planned with lots of riding, badges, pony related activities and fun. We will even
be running our own Olympic Handy Pony, Gymkhana and Eventing competitions ..... who are our budding gold
medallists??
We will be reducing the length of the day for those in the Lead Rein group, but once again the ratio of instructors to
children is greater than in the other groups so the cost of the Camp is the same.
More info and booking forms are included in with this newsletter and can be found on the website - so don’t delay, get
your forms in - secure your place - and keep riding!
If you have any requests or ideas for Camp you would like to see included please email nicola.barker@mcmsltd.co.uk
nicola.barker@mcmsltd.co.uk
We have had several requests for a BBQ to be held at Camp; if there are any willing volunteers who would like to take
this on (dads maybe?), we will see if it is possible. Unfortunately the camp organisers are unable to fit this in so it will
need to be an extracurricular activity.
We had an interbranch training session at Merrist Wood during the October half term. Staff College & Sandhurst and
Bisley Pony Clubs joined us and both junior and senior sessions went well.
We have got a few more games sessions at the Multi Activity days at Priory Equestrian over the next few months which
latwork training at the Priory over the winter has commenced and will continue through to February in our Multi
Activity Days. Our Dressage rallies are open to all and if you would like to be considered for teams please try and
make some of these sessions.
We are holding our own Dressage Competition at the Priory on Sunday 26 February 2012 (schedule enclosed). This is
a popular event so please enter early as it always gets full before the closing date. This Competition includes a Dengie
Qualifier at Novice and Open Level, but there are classes suitable for all levels and experiences – perfect for a first
dressage competition.
In preparation for this we will be offering a Practice Dressage Test Session at Priory Equestrian as part of our Multi
Activity Day on Sunday 8 January 2012.
The first outdoor team competition will be on Easter Monday (9 April 2012) at Eashing. There will be some team
training for this in March; please let Rosie Giraudet know if you would like to be part of a team at this event.
Finally, don’t forget to keep a look out for other indoor competitions over the winter on the Pony Club website and also
in the local press for non Pony Club ones too, to keep your hand in.

Since the last newsletter there have been no horse trials to report, but a brilliant win in the Novice Section of the
Meon Riding Club Hunter Trials at Iping has rounded off a fantastic season for Amy Giraudet and Badger - 1
second over the optimum time. How good was that! Also on good form this year was Tara Kelly and Apple, who
came 3rd in the open class of the last Hunter Trial at Fair Oak.
Tara and Amy were joined by Penny Ibbott on Mozart and Amy Leather on Calypso for the Team Chase at Fair Oak
where they came 7th out of about 16 teams.
Although Horse Trials go quiet over the winter period there are plenty of indoor Dressage and Show Jumping
competitions being held - so go out and get some practise in ready for the spring. Also, don't forget our show jumping
and dressage training sessions, to help brush up on your skills under instruction.
We will start our cross country training on Sunday 25 March 2012 at Fair Oak, Rogate. This will be for all levels,
including minimus, as Fair Oak have a lovely little 1'6" course in their first field. Our next training date will be 2 June
2012 at Coombelands, Pulborough for Mini, Novice and Intermediate levels.
If you are wanting to enter our competitions held at both these venues this is a very good opportunity to practise over
the cross country fences.
For training you need to be under control in a wide open space with a good positive attitude!
Don't forget to get THREE starred rallies at any of the winter activity days if you are hoping to do team competitions
next year.
