DOUBLE delight passed from York Indoor Bowls Club to Featherstone.

Last year York won both the title and Yorkshire Challenge Cup final.

But the feat eluded them this year with title-winners Featherstone topping York in the Cup showdown.

This time around York only had one winning rink – that of Phil Emmerson.

They took the lead with a three on the fifth end to make the score 5-3 and did not let the advantage slip as they went on to win 21-14.

Dave Attwood’s side led 17-16 with two to play but went down 22-17, while Paul Mooring’s team picked up a four on the penultimate end to reduce the arrears to 22-16 but dropped a two on the last.

The rink led by Paul Humphreys scored a three then a single on the last two ends but lost 19-13.

York had earlier overcome a tricky semi-final, where they beat Selby 80-60.

York took three rinks, but it was only towards the end of the game that they pulled away.

Emmerson’s team led 11-9 after 13 ends before beating Trevor Quainton’s team 21-13.

Mooring’s team had a 14-10 advantage over Roger Wood’s side with six ends to play and finished 23-11 winners.

Attwood’s team were level with Barry Roberts’ side at 16-16 with two to play before the York side won with a two then a single.

Selby’s winning rink came from Paul Lund’s side, who dropped singles on the last three ends to Humphreys’ team but they had already done enough to win the game 20-17.

In the other semi-final, Featherstone beat a spirited Harrogate side 77-59.

The tie included an excellent win for Ron Green’s team as they beat Tony Horobin’s 19-18.

And Roy Legate’s rink scored five shots over the last three ends to earn a creditable 17-17 draw.

York IBC ladies ended a disappointing season with an excellent 85-83 victory over Doncaster.

That enabled them to leapfrog their opponents and finish second from bottom in the North Eastern League, though just a mere four points shy of second-placed Hornsea.

The game looked to be slipping away from the York team as Irene Paylor’s away side trailed 29-3 after 11 ends for the aggregate match score to stand at 55-33.

But over the following five ends they made inroads to bring the aggregate back to 64-60 then took the lead in the run-in.

Paylor’s team rallied to only lose 40-11, while Pat Bracken’s rink fought from 7-3 down to eventually win 19-13.

At home, Pat Potter’s team were level at 11-11 after ten ends before they racked up 14 shots to run out 31-17 victors.

Pauline Cooper’s team won five of the last six to go from 14-12 ahead before wrapping up the game as 24-13 victors.
