NHL Draft picks from Essex County
In recognition of Boxford’s Chris Kreider being ranked No. 14 among North American Skaters in the National Hockey League Central Scouting Bureau’s Final Rankings, here is a list of other North Shore natives who were so lucky to be drafted to pro hockey teams.
It should also be known that Ryan Bourque, of Topsfield, and the son of Hockey Hall of Famer Ray Bourque, was ranked No. 49 among North American skaters.
Topsfield
Chris Bourque, 33rd overall, Washington Capitals. Played in 12 NHL games for the Capitals. Whereabouts: Playing for the Hershey Bears, the Capitals’ top minor league affiliate.
Beverly
FIRST ROUNDER – Bobby Carpenter, 1982, 3rd overall, Washington Capitals. Played 1,178 games for five teams, scoring 728 points. Whereabouts: Director of Player Development, Valley Jr. Warriors (of Haverhill).
Andy Silverman, 1990, 181st overall, New York Rangers. Retired.
Jeff Kampersall, 1988, 205th overall, New York Islanders. Whereabouts: Head coach of Princeton University Division 1 women’s hockey team. Kampersall graduated from Princeton in 1992 after a four-year career there.
Danvers
Alex Berry, 2005, 153rd overall, Toronto Maple Leafs. Whereabouts: Played eight games for Toronto Marlies, the Maple Leafs’ top minor league affiliate.
Brian Day, 2006, 171st overall, New York Islanders. Whereabouts: Playing for Colgate University.
Brian McGuirk, 2004, 231st overall, Columbus Blue Jackets. Whereabouts: Playing for the Syracuse Crunch, the Blue Jackets’ top minor league affiliate.
Jon Pratt, 1989, 154th overall, Minnesota North Stars (now Dallas Stars). Retired.
Essex
Bill Kopecky, 1984, 224th overall, Boston Bruins. Whereabouts: Head coach with U12 Seacoast Lightning Hockey club team.
Benn Ferreiro, 2006, 196th overall, Phoenix Coyotes. Whereabouts: Just completed four-year career with Boston College.
Gloucester
Dan Juden, 1994, 137th overall, Tampa Bay Lightning. Retired.
Haverhill
Peter Harris, 1986, 164th overall, New York Islanders. Retired.
Ipswich
Sean Dooley, 1987, 148th overall, Buffalo Sabres. Retired.
Lawrence
Steve Heinze, 1988, 30th overall, Boston Bruins. Played 694 NHL games for four teams, scoring 336 points. Whereabouts: Recently committed to donate his brain after his death to the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University School of Medicine, which researches sports concussions.
Ron Pascucci, 1988, 246th overall, Washington Capitals. Whereabouts: Coaching North Andover Youth Hockey Mite 2 team.
Lynn
Tom Rowe, 1976, 37th overall, Washington Capitals. Played 357 NHL games for the Capitals, the Hartford Whalers and the Detroit Red Wings. Whereabouts: Assistant coach for Carolina Hurricanes.
Dwight Schofield, 1976, 76th overall, Detroit Red Wings. Played in 211 NHL games for six teams, scoring 30 points. Retired.
Rick Willis, 1990, 76th overall, New York Rangers. Whereabouts: Coaching Squirt hockey for the Southern Tier Hockey Association in Binghamton, N.Y.

Brett Abel, 1993, Supplemental Draft, Edmonton Oilers. Whereabouts: Sales Representative at Mission-Itech Hockey.
