Stirling Lawn Tennis and Squash Club appeals for Sponsors

As it appeals for fresh sponsors for the forthcoming spring and summer season, Stirling Lawn Tennis and Squash Club, one of the oldest tennis clubs in Scotland, having been established in 1878, has revealed its exciting long term plans for its future at its base in Snowdon Place Lane. With three all weather (Tiger turf) floodlit tennis courts and two squash courts within its clubhouse, plans are afoot to invest in the clubhouse facilities to make it more welcoming and inclusive for the local community.

Paul Barnes, who has been a past president and member on the committee for many years, outlined the considerable history associated with the club, and explained that he and his fellow members had agreed a 25-year lease extension to ensure that this popular club, within the very heart of the Stirling community, gets to an even stronger place than the one it’s presently in.

“SLT&SC is a fantastic resource in the city with a strong membership of over two hundred members across both tennis and squash, including families, adults and juniors,” said Paul. “Some research suggests our club may be the oldest in the country. Originally there were just two blaes courts with a third being added in the 1950s. In the 1960s and 70s, with the increasing interest in squash, the new clubhouse was built incorporating the two squash courts which were opened in September 1976 – the very first squash courts in Stirling. The club was renamed at this time to its current title.”

Paul went on to say that the tennis courts were resurfaced as all-weather artificial grass courts in 2000, with floodlights also added. Surface renewal followed in 2014, with regular maintenance making the courts one of the best playing surfaces in the region.

As part of its ‘inclusive to all’ ambitions, the club offers a significant amount of coaching to Adults and Juniors in partnership with Mark Walker, an accredited LTA level 5 Master coach with twenty five years’ experience, covering both grassroots tennis to developing international players.

“We are very proud of our thriving Junior Coaching programme offering over 400 hours of coaching,” said Jeremy Speirs, the fund-raising committee member for the past 3 years. “We have three men's, two ladies as well as an over-55s and a junior tennis team playing home matches with the central district leagues, bringing guests to the club from areas including Dunblane, Dollar, Falkirk, Kippen, Linlithgow & Bridge of Allan.”

“Over the last few years, Mark has enjoyed being back in clubs helping develop their programmes and mentoring coaches. We now have access to a coaching team of four providing both individual and group lessons,” said Jeremy, who went on to say that the club was pleased to report that it had good reserves in the bank to fund its future repairs and court replacement but wanted to make its clubhouse much more inclusive.

“The club-house facilities unfortunately do not match our tennis and squash facilities. Whilst well maintained, the disability access is not of the standard we want or need; some changing room facilities require upgrade and our general facilities require upgrade to allow us to be more accessible and inclusive across the community,”
he said.

“As such, we are hoping that our newly launched full and partial sponsorship packages, which offer team sponsorships from just £300, together with a choice of court side placements, also from £300, will appeal to local businesses, as well as individuals.”

“We welcome this vital support which will help fund work on the clubhouse to bring it up to date,”
finished Jeremy.

Lesley Greenaway, Club President of SLT&SC, added that the club “was additionally looking to provide a platform to encourage children and the wider local community into the sport.”

She said that during the pandemic, the club had invested in a new gate entry system allowing non-members access to tennis through Pay & Play. This scheme is still in operation through ClubSpark providing access to all for just £10/hour.

“Pay and Play is a really quick and easy way to book a court online and gain access to the Club, but we haven’t really promoted this as much as we should have done, so we want to bring attention to it now as we kick off the outdoor tennis season and appeal for sponsorship.”

“We have, and continue, to partner with Tennis Scotland, ClubSport Stirling and Active Stirling to support grassroots tennis through the provision of open days for local schools, welcoming over 150 children to our most recent event,” said Lesley. “The next community Open Day will be held in June and I’d encourage anyone in our local community, young or old, to come along and give tennis a go. You are sure to receive a warm welcome and we are always keen to see new faces at the Club.
