Pack dominate as Weston survive drop

A powerful performance by the Weston pack enabled the visitors to earn a hard fought victory against third placed Brixham and banish any lingering relegation doubts in their final league game of the season.
The game was played in challenging conditions with a consistent drizzle allied to a strong breeze.
Weston played down the slope in the first half and immediately had to make a replacement when centre Cameron Maslen had to leave the field to be replaced by Joe Thomas.
Weston didn't let this upset their rhythm and in the tenth minute took a deserved lead. A prolonged passage of play involving forwards and backs ended with lock Ash Russell being hauled down near the line. Brixham however had infringed and from the resulting penalty Weston took a scrum and pushed the hosts back over their line for number eight and skipper Tom Sugg to dab down for the opening try. Impressive full back Kyran Devitt producing a phenomenal conversion in the conditions.
Brixham countered from the restart and ended up near the visitors line. Weston's line out was deemed not straight and Brixham cut the lead when from the scrum they ran the ball wide to the left to score a well taken try which was converted by home kicker Mitch Pinkus.
Brixham then took the lead through worryingly poor defence and it looked as though Weston's season long failings had resurfaced. Pinkus adding the conversion and shortly after Devitt had reduced the deficit to four points Pinkus slotted another penalty to put the hosts seven points in front. Weston regrouped and on the half hour ran a penalty wide to the right for Thomas to score in the corner. Weston the made some bad choices from the restart and this ended with a kick over the top and a fortunate bounce to put the Fishermen over for another converted try.
Devitt the left the field for some clean up work and while he was off fly half Dan Lomax took over the kicking duties to add three points to put Weston four points behind at the break.
Playing up the slope but with the wind in their favour Weston produced a superb second half performance. Brixham attacked from the start but were repelled at every stage. After weathering the storm Weston hit back and after a tremendous fifty twenty kick from the now returned Devitt Weston's dominance at the set piece began to earn its rewards. The forwards battled their way to the home line on several occasions and after prop Sam Coles and centre Jake Knight had try opportunities declined the first for a knock on under the posts and Knight being deemed to have been held up Weston eventually made their pressure tell when Sugg produced a carbon copy of their first score to put Weston one point to the good with ten minutes remaining. It was squeaky bum time but Weston were in no mood to let this lead go and on the stroke of full time Devitt produced the piece de resistance with an almighty booted three points to give Weston a deserved victory.
The pack to a man were outstanding with front rowers Coles hooker Gary Carpenter and man of the match Ollie Streeter the rocks of an exhilarating but nervous eighty minutes enjoyed by a large group of travelling supporters who cheered them to the rafters on the final whistle.
