Physical Education

Overview

The P.E. Department at Welland Park Academy is an exciting, progressive department, very popular with students in all five years and the school has a reputation for excellence in sport and physical education. Our sporting ethos is to provide pupils with worthwhile and educative experiences in as many activities as possible, in the hope that they will pursue any interests through participation outside school and into later life. The department is also heavily committed to extra-curricular PE whether it is through interhouse competitions, lunchtime & after school clubs, team practices or school fixtures. The department are keen to ensure all pupils have the opportunity to experience competitive sport and we are always looking to improve and extend the range of opportunities we offer.

Key Stage 3

Every KS3 student has 2 x 1 hour PE lessons per week. Pupils are given the opportunity to experience a range of activities through a broad and balanced curriculum. In the Autumn and Spring terms pupils cover a combination of rugby, hockey, football, netball, health related fitness, gymnastics, badminton (Year 8 & 9 only), cross country, dance, volleyball (Year 9 only) & table tennis In the summer term pupils cover athletics, softball/baseball and rounders.

Key Stage 4

Every KS4 student has 1 hour of PE each week. These lessons are option based and students have the opportunity to choose an actitvity that they enjoy every six weeks. In addition to this the department also provides examination courses for students. We currently run both OCR GCSE PE and OCR Cambridge National in Sport Studies. Students who choose these options will gain an additional 3 lessons a week ( 2 theory based and 1 practical).

Facilities

We have excellent outdoor and indoor facilities, outdoor facilities include 1 grass rugby pitch, 1 grass 9-a-side football pitch, a full size floodlit astroturf with hockey and football markings, a long jump area and two netball courts. Indoor facilities include a recently refurbished four badminton court sports hall, which also has full size markings for volleyball, basketball and five-a-side football.
