Wanstead U11G - Mini-Match Play Competition

Thursday 17th August

Wanstead's U11 girls team enjoyed an amazing evening of cricket, fun and friendship on Thursday at the Essex county ground, participating in Mini-Match Play. Playing 6 games against girls teams from across Essex, the girls showed their passion for cricket and the progress they have made throughout the season.

As always, making more noise than all the other teams put together, Wanstead cheered each other on giving constant encouragement with all players making valuable contributions throughout the evening. Overall, a tremendous display of cricket with bat and ball and in the field led to Wanstead winning all 6 games in convincing style.

The evening finished with medals, a light show and ‘Sweet Caroline’ – a super way to finish the season and their time in the U11 squad for some girls.

Thanks to all the parents and family members whose continual support has been vital to the success of the season with the girls winning all but one game. (Report and picture provided by Jo Malcolm)

Girls match report - week ending 13th August

Wanstead U13G v Hutton U13G

Sunday 13th August

The Wanstead U13 girls team travelled to Hutton for a friendly to close off the 2023 season. As has been the case all season, the match was played by both sides in the right spirit with everyone contributing. The team bond between the girls has continued to grow and as some parents noted, the volume levels made it seem like we could have been at a Sunday market. Regardless of how the match was going it was constant support and praise for each other.

So to the match, where plenty of changes were afoot. Starting with new stand in captain and vice captain (Kiah and Sienna) under great guidance from Keya and Deetya, Wanstead lost the toss and were asked to bat first. So onto the batting order, where Keya and Deetya, as the two outgoing u13 girls, decided they were going to bat down the order. “Who wants to open then?”. Stunned silence. After a moment Kiah and Sienna quietly both put their hands up to take on the mantle.

The team put up a total of 89 for 6 off their 20 overs with top scores from Kiah (25 and retired) and Emily (17), and everyone else chipping in to get the team to a respectable total.

Hutton started the run chase reasonably well, but the Wanstead girls remained lively in the field and the encouragement was evident from ball one. While Hutton were adding runs at a reasonable pace, wickets were also falling disrupting their flow, though they were in a pretty comfortable position coming into the last few overs. Going into the final two overs, Hutton needed 6 runs to win. A tight over from Sienna meant this became 3 off the final over. Emily was handed the role for the last over and the match went to the last ball where Hutton needed one for a tie and two for a win. Wanstead had brought all the fielders in. The batter dropped the ball to Deetya and set off for a run. A throw fired in for a direct hit meant that Wanstead ended up winning a thrilling match. Great bowling and fielding from everyone with two wickets for Sienna; one apiece for Emily, Keya and Agatha; and two run outs for Deetya. But as has been the case all season, just a great performance and effort from everyone.

A great way to sign of the season. As always thanks to all the parents for the support; Dev for the umpiring (though not sure we can let you on again with that shirt!); and Subhash for scoring. (Report and picture provided by Amit)

Girls match report - week ending 30th July

Wanstead U13Gs v Coggeshall U13G

Having won their league, Wanstead's U13Gs travelled to Coggeshall Town Cricket Club on Sunday for the county final. A long journey early on a windy Sunday morning. Wanstead won the toss and chose to bat first. While the start wasn’t ideal, losing two early wickets putting the team at 7 for 2, a rebuild began with a solid 4th wicket partnership between Deetya and Kiah taking the total to 89 before the next wicket fell. Deetya retired on 50 off 37 balls and 11 fours, and while more wickets fell the team got to a respectable 123 for 6 off their 16 overs.

Coggeshall started the run chase at a rapid pace and were cruising at the 12 over mark with a score of 111 for 1, needing just 13 off the last 4 overs. A flurry of wickets from our very young u11s (two each for Saanvi and Sienna) meant that the girls managed to take the match to the final over with both results possible, with Coggeshall needing 3 runs and Wanstead needing 1 wicket. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be for the Wanstead girls but testament to the girls once again in the fight with a never give up attitude.

As the season comes to an end, the girls' journey through the whole season has been amazing to watch and the future looks bright for the talent, team and leadership coming through. While they are naturally disappointed to not be able to close out the season on a high it has been a truly amazing season and as the umpire said at the presentation - this match was a true testament to girls cricket.

Well done again to all the girls on all the hard work and again thanks to all that came to support, Dev for umpiring and Jo for scoring. (Report and picture provided by Amit)

Girls match reports - week ending 23rd July

Wanstead U13G v Orsett and Thurrock

Wanstead's u13 girls travelled to Orsett and Thurrock CC on Monday to play their final match in the Essex League.

On what looked like a sunny evening, Captain Keya chose to bat after winning the toss. Deetya and Saanvi got Wanstead off to a fantastic start, adding runs at a steady pace. Deetya retired not out for a swift 51 before our youngest player Saanvi was out for 20. Keya and Emily were left to bat out the overs, getting the team to a total of 119 for 1 off 16 overs (Keya 20 not out, Emily 4 not out).

With the evening getting colder, windier and darker, conditions became more difficult, but the team came through with all members bowling, restricting O&T to 85 for 5 with 2 wickets for Keya, 1 each for Sienna and Emily, plus a direct hit run out from Emily off her own bowling.

The 3 points took the team to the top of the league table with a trip to the county finals on the horizon.

The u13 girls team has enjoyed a superb season having a long run in the National Cup competition as well as success in the league. The whole squad has contributed to this and it has been a pleasure for Amit and myself to watch the season unfold. Although winning games has been amazing the bigger and more important wins have been in the way the team have played, the developments they have made in skills and confidence, the relationships they have made and the enjoyment they have shown and given to others.

Above all, it takes a much wider team to create an atmosphere for young players to thrive in, so thanks to all the parents and supporters. Wanstead has the best interval snacks in the county! Particular thanks to Dev for umpiring and Subhash for scoring. Thanks to the Thursday evening coaching team - your freely given time and skills are a gift to all of us involved in girls' cricket at Wanstead.

Massive thanks to all the players. You have all been truly excellent in all the ways that count. (Report and picture provided by Jo Malcolm)

Wanstead U15G v Upminster

You sometimes have to be there to feel the atmosphere and emotion of cricket matches. Well done to the u15 girls team - Keya, Deetya, Clem, Farah, Emily, Agatha and Sophie - and the Upminster team for giving those of us lucky to be there an amazing evening of cricket.

Having chosen to bat, Wanstead reached a total of 88 for 4 from their 16 overs with Keya scoring 50 not out before retiring.

The feeling was that we were 30 runs too few, and with 2 players short, the team needed to pull off an incredibly strong fielding performance to win. The plan was to make 7 players feel like 9! Team spirit, belief, and commitment took over with each player playing their part in a superb fielding display with the girls encouraging each other at every touch of the ball. With 2 wickets each for Keya and Clem and 1 caught and bowled for Farah we reached the beginning of the last over with Upminster needing 9 to win. Could Wanstead do it? On came Emily with an amazing piece of death bowling to win by 5 runs.

An excellent and memorable game - what an occasion to be part of! (Report and picture provided by Jo Malcolm)

Wanstead U11G v Chingford

Not to be outdone in this week's round of girls games, the u11 team ventured to Chingford on Wednesday for a 16 over softball friendly. As always, the girls played with a great sense of fun and friendship, constantly encouraging and appreciating each other. Batting first, the team built a total of 294 for 7. A combination of amazing fielding and wicket taking kept Chingford to 279 for 8. A fantastic team performance with everyone making key contributions and creating cricket memories. Well done, everyone! (Report and picture provided by Jo Malcolm)

Girls match reports - week ending 16th July

Wanstead v Chelmsford

Great experience on Sunday for our older girls in their first women's division 2 game of the season against Chelmsford. Everyone contributed in some way and some excellent cricket from both young teams. Chelmsford batted first, setting a target of 211 for 2 from their 30 overs with one of their players reaching a century.

Wanstead returned after tea, knowing they had a big total to chase. Great shots and confident running across the team, managing to bat for 30 overs and finishing on 170 for 6. The highlight was Amelia's 57 off 37 balls, including 11 4s.

This is just the beginning, and we look forward to what comes next. Well done, team! (Report provided by Jo Malcolm)

Wanstead U13s v Redbridge U13s

Wanstead's U13s beat Redbridge in a Len Stentiford Trophy Match on Sunday. Wanstead scored 208 for 1 (the top 4 all made 30+ retired), and Redbridge were 23 all out (Keya took 4 wkts, and Deetya 2 wkts). The game was a clear mismatch, but fun to watch. (Report provided by Sam)

Wanstead U13G v Thriplow U13G

Wednesday 6th July

The Wanstead U13G team travelled to Thriplow in the ECB T20 cup regional semi-final. A long journey for the Wanstead girls against a tough opposition. Thriplow won the toss and chose to bat first. While Wanstead continued to chip in with wickets, Thriplow posted an above par score of 128 for 4. That was despite some excellent bowling and even better fielding. The full array of fielding skills was on show with bodies thrown on the line with fast travelling balls (Sienna and Keya) and some excellent catches (spectacularly close range reaction by Elsie). Once again Mila did a great job behind the stumps.

With light fading, Wanstead began a very difficult run chase but were unfortunately unable to repeat previous feats and Thriplow kept picking up wickets. In the end, the Wanstead girls were all out for 52 as they attempted to push up the run rate, Keya top scoring with 24. The gap in the results doesn’t represent the closely matched nature of the teams and on another day who knows.

What the young girls have achieved through this tournament is nothing short of spectacular and while they are disappointed with the results, it has been a truly amazing journey for all those involved and everyone at Wanstead is super proud of their achievements, maturity and leadership shown by the group. They have played every match as a team.

Well done again to all the girls on all the hard work and again thanks to all that came to support, Dev for umpiring, Subhash and Jo for scoring. (Report and picture provided by Amit)

Wanstead U11G

Despite no opposition, the U11 girls continued with a squad game on Saturday 8th July. They were in teams of 2 with points on offer for wickets, including run outs and catches. It's possible the draw was the snacks provided by Rani rather than the cricket!

Super cricket skills on display from all the girls with continuing progress especially in fielding and running between the wickets.

Run outs: 1 from Piya , 2 from Violet and 3 from Olive. Excellent catch from Violet.

3 wickets for Anna and 1 each for Roisin, Olive and Jaya.

Roisin and Shruthi had a high scoring 4 overs with sixes and fours and Roisin scored 28. However, the winning pair were Olive and Anushka with a score of 62 due to the additional points from Olive's run outs! Player of the morning was Olive.

Thanks for a great morning everyone! Thanks to our substitute fielders Jay and Inderpal! (Report provided by Jo Malcolm)

Girls match report - week ending 2nd July

Wanstead U11 girls v Frenford U11 girls

Saturday 1st July - friendly match

Great cricket on display from both teams, despite the rain showers. Captain Roisin won the toss and decided to bat first. Loudly cheered on by their teammates, Amaya and Olive got Wanstead off to a great start with fantastic calling and running between the wickets. Piya and Winnie both hit their first boundaries. Violet, Jaya, Roisin and Elsie continued in the same way taking the team to a total of 316 losing 6 wickets.

A superb bowling and fielding performance from the team including 2 catches kept Frenford to 277. All players were involved in taking wickets: 2 for Violet and 1 each for Amaya, Piya, Jaya, Roisin and Elsie. Plus 2 run outs from Winnie and Amaya.

Delight as always to see the girls enjoying playing and making progress. Thanks to Rani for providing the interval refreshments and to all the spectators for their support.

Looking forward to next Saturday already! (Report and picture provided by Jo Malcolm)

Girls match reports - week ending 25th June
Wanstead U13G v Billericay U13G

The Wanstead U13G team hosted Billericay in the ECB T20 cup round 4.  This was essentially the two strongest teams in Essex playing to move into the national part of the tournament.  It was an absolutely sweltering morning at Nutter Lane but what no one expected was the hurricane that came.

Billericay lost the toss and were asked to bowl by Captain Keya.  Exceptionally tight and accurate bowling from Billericay meant they were constantly picking up wickets and not allowing the Wanstead girls to get away.  Wanstead were all out for 85 off 15.4 overs.  Key contributions from Deetya (25), Keya (19) and Mila (10 not out) helped to post a respectable total.  Others chipped in and great to see excellent calling and picking up the quick singles.

While heads were a little down post the batting,  what came next is pretty difficult to put into words so here are the bowling figures:

                       Overs Maidens Runs Wickets
Keya Patel          5          2           6       5
Deetya Padala  4          0           9        2

The girls went out with a plan but the execution was absolutely flawless.  Wickets kept falling, fielding was tight and catches taken.  Billericay were bowled out for 18 off 9 overs, with Keya getting her first 5 wicket haul.  To go with the relentlessly spearing bowling in the heat, Mila was excellent behind the stumps taking some tough balls with zero fear.  Marker down and the wheels on the bus keep going round and round.

Well done to all the girls and again thanks to all that came to support, Dev for umpiring, Subhash and Jo for scoring. (Report and picture provided by Amit)

Wanstead U11G v South Loughton U11G

A fantastic afternoon of cricket at South Loughton CC for the U11 girls in the MET region softball series competition. Wonderful to be with 6 other teams of girls.

Great cricket from all of the girls - quick decision making  and running between the wickets as well as great shots over the boundary, accurate bowling with confident catching and super backing up and teamwork in the field.

Winning all 3 league games, the girls reached the final with Woodford Wells.

Woodford Wells 75 for 2
Wanstead 54 for 6

Excellent team performance all afternoon finishing 2nd from 7 teams.

Well done, Elsie, Saanvi, Roisin, Jemimah, Anushka, Alisha, Amaya, Josephine and Olive! Priviledge to watch you play today.  Thanks, parents, for your support on a hot afternoon. Special thanks to Shameel for umpiring and Promila for scoring and of course to Jemimah's dad for quickly dashing to the shop to buy new trainers and saving the day! (Report by Jo)
Girls match reports - week ending 18th June 2023

Wanstead U13G v Buckhurst Hill U13G

The Wanstead U13G hosted Buckhurst Hill in the Essex League on a perfect Friday evening at Nutter Lane. And the wheels remain firmly on the wagon. Buckhurst Hill lost the toss and were asked to bowl by Captain Keya. With a change in the opening line up, Saanvi, without hesitation, stepped up to open the batting with Deetya, getting Wanstead off to a solid start. With Keya joining Saanvi at the fall of the first wicket, the pair put on a solid partnership and yes, it was yet another 50 for Keya. Good and lively contributions from Emily and Sienna (loved the runs celebration in the middle) chipping in to get Wanstead to a very solid total of 107 for 2 off their 16 overs, with a real step up in running between the wickets.

Then came the run chase. Buckhurst Hill starting off well until the magic arm of Elsie broke the partnership with a brilliant caught and bowled. After that it was all Wanstead. Runs dried up, wickets kept falling with Keya picking up two and Emily one, leaving Buckhurst Hill 83 for 4. Our part time keepers - Keya and Deetya - are starting to look like pros. The fielding was again excellent with Roisin, Ana and Louisa stopping vital runs. Winning is becoming a habit and spirits remain high with the team being joined at the end, with some supporters (Naomi, Ruby, Kiah), keeping the volume up. Onto the next one and well done to all. (Report and picture provided by Amit)

Wanstead U11G v Aztecs U11G

Wanstead's U11 girls hosted Aztecs in a friendly, pairs 16 over softball game on Saturday morning. Wanstead batted confidently setting a total of 324 for 3 with excellent running between the wickets and some great boundaries. Accurate bowling and tight fielding kept Aztecs to 226 for 4. A wonderful performance from all the team, with the highlight being a triple wicket maiden over for Olive on her u11 girls debut! Well done everyone! (Report provided by Jo Malcom)

Wanstead U15G v Hutton U15G

Another hot morning saw an early start for our very young u15 girls team in their second Essex League game v Hutton at Overton Drive on Sunday. Wickets were hard to come by in the Hutton innings, but the team bowled and fielded well, keeping Hutton to 113 for 2. Openers Deetya and Clem gave a strong batting performance to keep the total ticking along until Deetya retired not out scoring her first 50 of the season, which she dedicated to her dad for Father's Day. In a tight finish, Wanstead came up just short, losing by 10 runs (103 for 3). A great game and great experience for our young side. The future looks bright.

Thanks, parents, for your support with umpiring, scoring, tidying away, and refreshments - much appreciated as always. (Report provided by Jo Malcolm)

Match Reports - week ending 28th May

Wanstead U13 girls v Woodford Wells

The Wanstead U13 girls visited Woodford Wells on 23rd May in the ECB T20 Vitality Cup. Captain Keya won the toss and elected to bat. Managing to bat for all 20 overs, the team posted a total of 100 for 4 with Keya 46 not out, ably supported by the rest of the team. In a bowling performance the Wanstead 1st XI would be proud of, Wells were all out for 28 runs in 8 overs with all wickets being bowled.

On her debut, Saanvi took 4 wickets for 5 runs in her 3 overs, plus 2 wickets for Deetya. Another fantastic team performance and a tremendously exciting game despite the cold. Well done everyone! Really proud of you all as always. (Report provided by Jo Malcom)

Wanstead U13 girls v Upminster

Brimming with confidence after their win in the national competition, the U13G hosted Upminster in the Essex league on Thursday 25th May.  Having batted first, Wanstead posted an impressive total of 138 for 4 off their 16 overs. Keya, scoring 51 and having to retire, was also supported by Deetya, Kiah and Elsie. Wanstead then produced another solid bowling performance, restricting Upminster to 71 for 7. Two wickets a piece for Deetya, Agatha, Sienna (also narrowing missing out on a hat trick), with Kiah taking the remaining one. Another solid fielding display and great to see the team encouraging each other through the match. Well done to all. (Report provided by Amit)

Girls Match Reports - week ending 4th June 2023

The girls' teams had no games this week. However, on Thursday, 1st June, the Sunrisers player Mady Villiers popped along to the girls' coaching sessions, offering tips and helping with coaching.

Here is feedback from one of the girls:

'Mady was really nice and approachable and funny - she gave me good tips and made me feel more confident as she said my bowling was good and that my shots were great, and I even hit one of her bowls! Thanks, Mady!' (Report and picture provided by Jo Malcolm)

Wanstead took a young and inexperienced U9A side to Bancroft for a Don Coates softball match. Wanstead scored 116 for 5, and Bancroft scored 103 for 3, with Wanstead winning by 3 runs.

Excellent enthusiasm and effort by all. Excellent batting and running between the wickets by Olive and Josephine. Great fielding by the team. Everyone contributed well and enjoyed the day. Angus bowled really well, getting his first wicket. (Report provided by Phil)

Wanstead U13G v Woodford Wells U13G

On another cold evening on Tuesday 6th June, the U13Gs travelled to Woodford Wells for their Essex league game, with Wells looking for revenge after their defeat in the ECB T20 cup.  Having won the toss and batted first, Wanstead posted another impressive total of 127 for 2 off their 16 overs.  Deetya scored 40 and was 3 balls short of batting through the whole innings, while Keya produced another whirlwind 51 and had to retire. Wanstead then put in another solid bowling performance, restricting Woodford Wells to 106 for 6.  Three wickets for Keya and one each for both Kiah and Sienna, with an additional smart run out from Elsie. Another solid fielding display with good backing up and throwing in.  Well done to all. (Report and picture provided by Amit)

Wanstead U13 Girls v Hutton
ECB T20

Sunday 11th June

A very young U13G hosted Hutton in the ECB T20 and while the clouds had gathered on a very humid day, the wagon continued to roll on.

Hutton won the toss and decided to bat first.  With some fantastic bowling Wanstead bowled Hutton out for 83 in 14 overs.  Elsie picked up 3 excellent wickets while Deetya (2 plus a run out) and Keya (1) took the remaining.  They were accompanied by tight bowling from Sienna and Saanvi.   Again through the whole innings there was great encouragement.  Another real team effort on the field.

For the run chase as the light deteriorated, all the batters contributed either in ensuring they held up one end or blasting their way to the total.  Keya hitting a quick fire 55 with some sublime shots (that’s 3 in a row - a hatrick even) was well supported by Louisa. Deetya then came in and finished off the match with a smash straight back down the ground.  Nice first appearances by both Roisin and Ruby as well.

Another great all round display as the team move onto the next stages.

Well done to all.

Wanstead Fundamentals League:

The South Loughton Fundementals League is now approaching its 20 year birthday . We like the model which helps to introduce players, parents and new managers to cricket, mindful of the need for parental presence and younger siblings we use the opportunity to provide ‘sibling   coaching‘. We do not collect match fees.

So our first match Monday 5, a really good team display. There was some confusion around who won but the number one priority was addressed which was payer development and having fun. The girls, Olive, Josephine and Hadah show good promise , Finley , Adam , Yusef,  Zak and  Hashin all contributed to a good all round team performance.

We will be putting more focus on bowling during our coaching sessions. The team for next week reflects squad rotation, we will have managers, sibling coaching  and for resting players we also start our Overton tape ball sessions, so a lot to look forward to!

A huge thank you for Helen for being such a good coach.
