British Champion Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles-Ridley) headlines the entry for the second round of the National Trophy Cyclo-Cross in Southampton this Sunday

Both the series leaders, Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles-Ridley) and Annie Simpson are expected to be in Southampton on Sunday for the second round of the National Trophy Series. For Ian Field, it’s a ‘home round’ for his sponsor Hargroves Cycles-Ridley and the three time British champion will return down south from Yorkshire to defend the lead in the series.

Ian, who was ill for the World Cup last weekend, is the overwhelming favourite but his teammate Jody Crawforth is also showing great form and skill and is certainly another capable of winning, probably with a wheelie if last weekend was anything to go by!

Other favourites on the list include Belgian visitor Dany Lacroix who will want to do better than his 21st last year whilst defending series winner Paul Oldham is expected to be vying for the win too after a slow start in Shrewsbury.

They may though have to contend with Liam Killeen who is also on the start list. Expected to be gridded on the front row this time, Killeen should be a much bigger threat to Field than he was in Shrewsbury where he had at least 18 riders between him and Field on the first lap and carved his way through the riders in front to outsprint Crawforth for send behind Field.

In the Women’s Trophy race last time, it was a five way battle in Shrewsbury and series leader Annie Simpson had to use her sprint to win. Last weekend, Annie’s confidence must be high after beating her main rivals again, juniors Ffion James and Amira Mellor. Throw into the mix Charlotte Broughton who was leading an event last weekend before having to retire with asthma issues, and it could be an even bigger group contesting the victory in Southampton.

All the other categories have the favourites there like British Champ Tracey Fletcher in the Veteran Women, Alfie Moses in the Juniors, Lucy Horrocks in Youth Girls but no British champ Dan Tullett in the Youth boys. His brother Ben though is down to ride the Under 14 Boys and Poppy Wildman the girls. Both were winners in Shrewsbury.

In the Vets, Shrewsbury winner on his Raleigh RX Race bike Phil Roach is entered as is the legend Tim Gould but no Steve Douce this time. Ian Taylor, also a winner in Shrewsbury, heads the over 40 line up and it will be interesting to see if Darren Atkins can reverse the result from round 1 and get across the line first.
