DALLAS — Kirby Smart has been named Georgia’s next head coach, but until No. 2 Alabama’s season is over — which the program hopes means a fourth national title in seven years — he’s fully committed to the Tide.

Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart runs drills with defensive players during a practice before Christmas.

“He’s turned up more because he knows we gotta get this done,” senior linebacker Reggie Ragland said. “He’s been the same guy. No distractions at all.”

Smart, 40, has been the Crimson Tide’s defensive coordinator for eight seasons, has won three national championships alongside Nick Saban and is one of the highest-paid assistants in the country, making $1.5 million annually.

Earlier this month he accepted the job to replace Mark Richt at Georgia. But before he fully immerses himself in his alma mater, Smart will coach Alabama's defense through the Playoff and potentially a national title game.

Smart had to split time between his coordinator duties and Georgia recruiting (the dead period started last week, which means in-person contact is restricted), but players haven’t seen him miss a beat as they prepare to face No. 3 Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 31.

“Coaching wise, he’s coaching me harder,” Ragland said. “He’s been the same person.”

Smart declined to comment about his situation at the SEC championship game, but will address reporters in Dallas next week.
