Takehiro Iikawa
The Open-Air Museum will present “Takehiro Iikawa Decorator Crab: Occurring Simultaneously or Awareness Being Delayed" as the eighth in a series of exhibitions introducing new contemporary creative expressions. This series will be held for the first time in four years following the pandemic.

Iikawa, a native of Kobe, Hyogo, focuses on the uncertainty of human perception and events that are overlooked in everyday life, creating installations that encourage viewers to notice and actively respond. He is one of the most active artists in recent years, showing his work at art museums and art festivals throughout Japan.

This exhibition focuses on new installations from the "Decorator Crab" series, which Iikawa has been developing since 2007. In addition to "Decorator Crab - For 0 or more viewers", an installation piece that allows viewers to physically and sensually perceive the space and materials that are transformed by their active involvement, and "Decorator Crab - Very Heavy Bag", which looks as if it was left behind by someone, the exhibition will also feature "Decorator Crab - Very Heavy Bag", an installation that, despite its powerful size, is not a work of art. In addition, the sculpture "Decorator's Crab - Mr. Kobayashi the Pink Cat," a work that cannot be fully appreciated at a glance, lurks among the trees. The exhibition will also include previously exhibited video works, which will provide an insight into Iikawa's point of view, which runs throughout his work.

Iikawa's work has a cute and accessible surface that appeals to a wide range of visitors, but it also focuses on the imperfections of human communication and the interest in awareness itself, which sometimes comes too late. The work positively addresses the coincidences that occur as a result of the viewer's actions and attempts to send events to places separated by time and distance. The "Decorator's Crab" unfolds in a way that induces action and thought in the viewer.

The duration of this exhibition is approximately 8 months. As the seasons change, so too will the work.
