Daniel Wilkinson dead: Non-League footballer dies after collapsing during Integro League Cup match between Shaw Lane AFC and Brighouse Town
The 26-year-old died in hospital after a suspected heart attack during the game between Northern Premier League sides
A NON-LEAGUE footballer has died after collapsing on the pitch during a game on Monday night.
Shaw Lane AFC's Daniel Wilkinson, 26, collapsed during the second half of a game against Brighouse Town in the Integro League Cup.
He later died in hospital having suffered a suspected heart attack.
Wilkinson appeared to stop breathing and go into cardiac arrest during the second half.
He was treated by paramedics for more than half an hour on the St Giles Road pitch where he was given CPR.
The defender, who signed for the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League team from Rushall Olympic in the summer, was then taken by ambulance to the Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax.
Craig Wood, chairman of the Barnsley-based club, posted a statement on Facebook.

He wrote: "It's with great sadness that we have to announce the tragic loss of Daniel Wilkinson who has sadly passed away after collapsing on the pitch during the game last night, our thoughts and prayers are with him family and friends at this time.
"The club would like to thank everyone for their heartfelt messages and thoughts that we have received throughout the night. There are no more words at this time."
Wilkinson had been a youth player with Premier League Hull City, signing a professional contract with the club in 2010.
He spent time on loan at Harrogate Town and North Ferriby United, before joining Loughborough University to study a degree in accounting and financial management.
Wilkinson also played for Goole AFC and Scarborough Athletic, before moving to Rushall.
The semi-pro Wilkinson also worked for Sheffield accounting firm Barber Harrison & Platt Chartered Accountants.
