Rotherham Hockey Club raise funds after player’s spinal injury

A Rotherham HC player was involved in a sporting accident which left him unable to breathe for himself and without the use of his legs.

Chris Parke, a long-serving club member, fractured his spine in an accident on a hockey trip in the summer and is currently recovering at Nottingham Hospital.

Rotherham are raising £5,000 to support the Chris Parke Rehabilitation Fund and aid his long-term recovery.

Rotherham HC’s president David Woodward said: “Chris is making steady but positive progress. They have removed his neck brace during the day and are now very slowly taking him off the ventilator.

“Currently he is having three 75 minute sessions each day without breathing support and using a voice box to speak. His upper body movement continues to improve and his doctors are delighted with his progress all be it very slowly.”

Chris has been a club member since he was eight and is currently in the Men’s 2s and also coaches in the youth section.

Club chairman James Swinscoe said: “This is a tragic accident to a young man who has given so much to Rotherham Hockey Club and beyond.

“It has been my privilege to have played alongside Chris for many years. My very best wishes to Chris and his family.”
