Taylor-Gell takes a five-for in vain as Sutton-on-Hull progress to round one

Sutton-on-Hull got their Voneus Village cup campaign underway in style with a convincing 69-run away win over Thornton-le-Moor in the preliminary round, writes Michael Rudling.

The visitors posted a below-par 135 – Sam Taylor-Gell (5 for 23) ripping through their middle and lower order – but backed it up with an impressive bowling display that saw the wickets shared around evenly, as the home side were dismissed for 66.

Horndon on the Hill edge nail-biting thriller against Great Totham

Horndon On The Hill progressed to round one of the Village Cup after edging Great Totham by one wicket, writes Michael Rudling.

Hosts Great Totham were bowled out for a respectable 178 in 39.1 overs, and they kept their Lord’s dream alive until the penultimate ball before Hordon broke their hearts.

South Weald reach round one with convincing win over Ingatestone & Fryerning

Rob Hull and Vamshi Lingala scored half-centuries to help South Weald to a convincing 86-run victory over Ingatestone & Fryerning, one of five preliminary fixtures in Essex & Suffolk.

Hull blasted 79 runs from 67 balls while Lingala contributed a steady 53 to help their side to 218 for 8.

In reply, Glen Smith’s half-century gave Ingatestone & Fryerning hope of victory before a flurry of wickets from Dom Pye and Lee Austin saw them all out for 132.

Daddy hundred for Jack Harrison as South Holderness crush Blubberhouses

Jack Harrison scored a daddy hundred as South Holderness crushed Blubberhouses by 318 runs in the preliminary round of the Village Cup.

Harrison blasted 162 runs from 53 balls – the highest score of the competition to date – while openers Luke Ingram (90 off 76) and Tom Reeves (87 off 89) also scored half-centuries as South Holderness closed on 387 for 4.

Bevan Hill (4 for 20) and Mark Johnson (4 for 25) then took four wickets apiece as Blubberhouses were all out for 69.

Come the end of September when the 2022 Village Cup statistics are being finalised, one knock from the preliminary round is likely to be in the reckoning for the highest individual score of the tournament.

Facing Blubberhouses in North Yorkshire (North), South Holderness batter Jack Harrison blasted 162 runs from 53 balls to help his side to 387 for 4 and earn himself Theakston Player of the Round honours.

Walking to the middle in the 26th over, his knock included nine fours and 19 sixes, with Luke Davis, Adil Shazad – who had only conceded 29 runs from his previous seven overs before being smashed for 23 by Harrison, Ubaid Khan and and Sudais Shah all suffering at his hand, while his third-wicket partner, Adam Dewson, contributed just four runs from 14 balls to the 145-run stand.

Elsewhere…

In Essex & Suffolk, Easton recorded a 34-run victory over Little Baddow to set up a round one clash with Bentley. Alex Sayer top-scored for his side with 47 but struggled to form any partnerships as Easton closed on 139 for 9.

However, they defended well with the ball, with first change bowler Sam Hall (3 for 12) dismissing Little Baddow’s top three and Chris Wells and Ezra Fuller picking up three wickets apiece. T Moss top-scored for Little Baddow with 26 not out.

Thorpeness suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Stock, losing by eight wickets. The hosts were bowled out for just 29 runs, with David Cole taking 4 for 2 from his 5.2 overs, including three maidens. In reply, Stock lost both of their openers for ducks but recovered to complete their chase inside six overs.

Chappel & Wakes Colne beat Rettendon via a walkover and will face High Roding on April 24 while in Oxfordshire, Minster Lovell progressed in similar fashion against Horley. They face Baldons in round one.
