Coal town's dilapidated indoor badminton court is set to regain its glory after two years.

Dhanbad Municipal Corporation on Tuesday decided to carry out repairs of the 14-year-old facility at an estimated cost of Rs 5.98 lakh. A tender was floated for repairing the wooden flooring at court No. 1.

The last date for submission of bids is October 14. The same will be opened on October 17.

Mayor Chandrashekhar Agarwal said that one of the two courts was lying in a very bad shape. "Our aim was to restore the infrastructure at the earliest," he added.

This is a second attempt to repair the court. A tender with an estimated cost of Rs 4.54 lakhs was issued by Dhanbad Zilla Sanskritik Evam Krida Parishad in April 2013. But the effort didn't materialise due to procedural delays.

The stadium was built with funds provided by then Rajya Sabha member Late P.K. Agarwala and was inaugurated on February 14, 2003, by former chief minister Babulal Marandi. Though earlier a separate committee managed affairs of the stadium, it was merged with Dhanbad Zilla Sansritik Evam Krida Parishad. At present, the district-level committee is headed by DC Anjaneyulu Dodde as president and SDO Mahesh Kumar Santhalia as ex-officio secretary.

More than 50 people, including members of Dhanbad District Badminton Association, practise at the two wooden courts from 6am to 10am and 6pm to 9pm.

Expressing happiness over the development, president of the outfit B.S.P. Rai said: "The revamp will go a long way in promoting the game in Dhanbad."
