Alys Fowler, author of 'The Edible Garden', tells us about her love of custard tarts and jelly beans

7am I love breakfast. Have either home-made granola or home-made sourdough bread, with coffee.

9am Intend to spend the morning writing but end up gardening. When I'm filming in my garden the crew is fuelled by tea and wonderful custard tarts and berry pastries from the local pâtisserie.

12pm Head to the allotment nearby with eggs from my hens. Lunch is scrambled eggs with lots of greens, and tea from the storm kettle. I eat a lot of sprouts, which are really nutritious, and often make nettle risotto.

1pm I'm clearing the land to grow potatoes, squash and other hardy vegetables. Eating what you grow comes with a built-in exercise regime! 3pm Oatcakes and tea.

7pm Pasta and more veg. Munch on jelly beans (my weakness) in front of the television. I made some damson vodka last year, which I mix with soda water and lime – tastes just like Ribena!

'Alys is of course the embodiment of Mother Earth, and makes the rest of us feel terribly inadequate when it comes to cooking and growing veg and making home-brew. But I can't deny her diet is super-healthy, and it does inspire me to try and take a tiny leaf out of her book and at least grow my own tomatoes this year'
