AT the half way stage of the Summer Tennis League season Yelverton have a mixed set of results to report.

The ladies section is running three teams again and the A team are currently fourth in division two. They have had good wins against St Budeaux B and Plymstock, but lost to Plympton A and Mannamead A. Karen Gasche and Helen Smith have won most of the points with good back up from Angie Lynch and Shirley Every.

The newly promoted B team are fifth in division three. In a close match, Julia Whetton and Liz Parks  took two sets off a strong Ivybridge C team while Ann Short and Wendy Sharland took a set off their second pair and narrowly lost the deciding tie-break. Fiona Spreadbury, Liz Parks, Wendy Sharland and junior newcomer Gabriella Hattersley all played well to earn a 4-4 draw with Whiteford Road A.

The C team are second in division five and are hoping for promotion. In their match Fiona Smart, Jenny Kay, Mary Downey and Jean Humphries fought out an exciting 4-4 draw against Saltash. In the next match a strong Hill Lane team beat Jenny Kay, Fiona Smart, Lynne Macfarlane and Jean Humphries 2-6.

The mens A team are currently sixth in division four, but they have had problems in fielding their strongest team due to injuries. Chris Spreadbury and Charles Hattersley did well to earn a point with spirited performance in a difficult match against Saltash A.

On the social side a very enjoyable Pimms Tournament took place on a lovely summers evening at Yelverton recently. The winners were Hannah Wrench and Alex Toggle, who won the deciding match against Gabriella Hattersley and Steve McCormick. A great evening was had by all and thanks to Simon Murray for his organisation of the tournament.  The club also welcomed Tony Pryce Sports for an racquet testing evening.
