YELVERTON Tennis Club's four teams completed all their Plymouth and district Summer League matches — with three of them securing promotion for next season.

The men's captain Phil Gasche and his wife Karen, the ladies captain, were both delighted with the success and the hard work by all the squad players.

In the men's team final match, Phil Gasche, Charles Hattersley, Terry Leonard and Peter Smith secured their position as runners up in division five - despite losing the match 1-8 to division winners Ivybridge E.

Yelverton Ladies A completed a successful season by defeating Mannamead B  8-1 in their last match to finish in third in division two. Angie Lynch and Shirley Every played as first pair with Fiona Spreadbury and Wendy Sharland helping to win both matches.

A superb finish especially as captain Karen Gasche was injured for most of the matches. Junior Gabriella Hattersley made a great contribution to this success.

Yelverton B Ladies lost only two matches to win division four with St Mellion in second place. In the final match away to Looe, Ann Short, Jenny Kay, Jean Humpries and Fiona Smart secured a 6-5 win.

The Ladies C team were runners up in division five to win promotion with Devonshire C. In their last fixture, Fiona Smart, Jean Humphries, Jenny Kay and Carol Llewellyn won convincingly 8-1 against Ivybridge E.

In a mixed doubles friendly organised by Janet Strelling against Tavistock, Yelverton won 6-2 — thanks to Fiona Smart, Matt Smith, Rachel Driver and Mike for this victory over their local rivals.

n The first tennis and cricket challenge  between YTC and Tavistock Cricket Club took place earlier this month.   The tennis was hugely enjoyable.  Yelverton were the eventual winners but Tavistock evened the honours by winning the cricket the following evening.
