Surrounded by a number of bowling champions and hall of famers, Courtney Radick went into the 19th annual Syracuse Invitational Queens Bowling Tournament on Dec. 13 wondering if she would be able to make the first qualifying cut against such distinguished competition.

“I knew the field was going to be very competitive and I knew the scores could be high,” Radick said.

Radick’s apprehension about making it to the next round proved to be unfounded as the Oswego right-hander not only was the tournament’s top qualifier, she went on to win the Queens title with a 236-171 win over Michele Edick at B’ville Sports Bowl. It was Radick’s first major tournament title since her days as a junior bowler.

“Words cannot really describe how it feels to win this tournament,” Radick said. “I am very proud and was very fortunate to have a number of friends there to support me and celebrate with me.”

Radick seized the top qualifying spot with a strong four-game block of 895 with a high game of 246. Radick was also the Post-Standard Women’s Masters top qualifier last year.

“I was fortunate to carry when I needed to and string some strikes together,” Radick said. “A lot of women were throwing great shots, and just didn’t have the carry. I was fairly accurate and consistent, and made the majority of my spares.”

Radick, who bowled her fifth career 300 in September, earned the top seed in the stepladder finals with a 675 three-game block in the semifinals. Also making it to the finals was hall of famer Roseann DiFlorio; reigning Van Wie Doubles champ Emilie Pawlick; Edick, the 2009 Post-Standard Masters runner-up; and Kristy Moro, the SWBA’s all-time high series record holder.

“I was happy and relieved (to be the top seed) because I knew I could finish no worse than second,” Radick said. “I was able to watch the other bowlers and get an idea of what the shot was and how they were reacting to the pressure of the situation.”

In the first match of the stepladder finals, DiFlorio advanced with a 179-161 win over Pawlick. In the second match, Edick eliminated DiFlorio in a two-frame roll-off. Both players finished tied with 183, but Edick won the ninth and 10th frame roll-off 28-27.

In the semifinal match, Edick defeated Kristy Moro 210-200 to advance to the championship match against Radick. Radick, who averaged 225.75 for the tournament, won $400 for first place and Edick cashed $250 for second. The tournament drew 45 entries, an increase of three from last year. DiFlorio had the tournament’s high game with a 265.

ÖFirst-half champions will be decided during The Greater Syracuse Travel League position round Dec. 22. Standings in both the City and Suburban Divisions are close. Deadlocked in first place in the City Division with matching 29-13 records are Summit Machine and Erie Blvd. Lanes. In the Suburban Division, Butler’s (26-16) will bowl Solvay Rec No. 2 (25-17).
