Congratulations Paul Liddiard, winner of the 2023 Hay Cup, played at Epsom Golf Club on Friday, 8th September.

In the recent Nottinghamshire Cricket U16 Vs Surrey Cricket U16 game, Sutton CC colt Ansh Bansal scored a 1st innings 161no in 155 balls (28 x 4.) Fellow Sutton CC colt Sahil Sheth took a total of 4 wickets in the same game. Congratulations to both lads 👏👏👏

Never mind the Lionesses! Yesterday, Sutton CC Women’s 1st XI secured promotion to the Surrey Women’s Cricket League Premiership 2024 by virtue of their win at Cheam Road vs. Godalming CC Ladies 1st XI. Great achievement and congratulations to all involved.

During Cricket Week the club collected Food Bank donations for the Gander Green Lane Community Fridge.  By the end of the week, the collection box was overflowing. Thank you everyone who gave.🙏

Congratulations Sutton CC’s Under 13s

U13s League Title Decider – Sutton v Banstead. Report by U13 skip, Sachin Mankertz. 

With Sutton and Banstead both on 33 points after 9 games, this top of the table clash would decide the league – winner takes all. The match was thrown into great jeopardy after hours of intense rain the night before, but we were given the thumbs up on the morning of the 23rd.

With an uncovered pitch, we knew the toss would be vital and luckily after I won it, we chose to bowl. We made an excellent start, reducing them to 19-2 after 6 out of the 25 overs, with some tight, fast bowling from Abir especially. However, with one of our important bowers Akshon injured and unable to bowl, as well as another important bowler Charlie not being able to bowl his full allocation, we were short on overs. This led them to getting up to 81-5 off 15 overs which could have turned into a score of 140-150. However, with some good bowling all round, we reduced them to 127-7 after their 25 overs- a competitive score.

Our innings didn’t start too well as we were reduced to 20-2 after 8 overs when I came in. Umar-Farooq and I managed to put on a good partnership with some good running and decisive shot making and we were at 54-2 after 12 at drinks, needing 74 off 78 balls. After some closely fought overs but a loss of a wicket, we needed 50 off 50. A few boundaries and good running led us to needing 18 off 30. However, their best bowler bowled a maiden, and then I had to retire for 50 off 45, leaving us to need 14 off 22, with 5 wickets in hand. They bowled really well and we struggled to get bat on ball from here onwards and with five balls remaining, we required 5 runs with 4 wickets in hand.  It got down to 2 off 3 and then Charlie creamed the ball through the covers to bring the league home for Sutton.

The pitch invasion began and it finally sunk in that we had won the league.

On Sunday, Rebecca Denman (4.5-2-4-6) secured her first 6 wicket haul for Sutton CC Women in the club’s 10-wicket victory over Walton-on-Thames CC Women. Congratulations!

CHAMPIONS!

Last evening, 13th July, the club’s U11’s concluded a marvellous season, beating Wimbledon CC U11’s by 57 runs; and in doing so completing their competition unbeaten, winning all ten fixtures. Well done lads!  Enjoy your summer.

Half Term Report.

The Surrey Championship’s Division One has a reputation for being one of the competition’s most exciting and unpredictable leagues, and the 2023 season hasn’t disappointed.

Several teams have significantly bettered their pre-season expectations, while others have failed to live up to their billing. In between, several teams have experienced a dramatic change in form - some for the good, some for the bad.

The Premiership might be greeting a relatively fresh face come next season if one of the current top three, Walton-on-Thames CC, (presently 2nd equal with Spencer CC, on 128 points) carries on in the same vein as they have done in the first half of the season.  We are handily placed in 4th with 126 points, whilst Banstead CC, whom we beat comprehensively on Saturday, remain at the top of the division with 144 points. Malden Wanderers CC, 119 points, and Valley End CC, 117 points, are positioned just below us, in 5th and 6th place respectively.

At the season’s half-way mark, all the top six clubs, other than Walton-on Thames CC, featured in the topflight recently; thus, they are all attempting a rapid return to the Premiership. However, the real headline would be if Walton-on-Thames CC were to gain promotion.

In the 2nd XI Division 1, our 2s stand in equal 4th place with Banstead CC, on 98 points each, behind Weybridge CC on 118 points, Normandy CC on 124, and leaders Valley End CC, on 133.

The 3rd XI Division 1 sees just 9 points between 2nd and 7th place. We stand in 5th on 98 points with Sunbury CC leading the way on 148 points.

In the Surrey Downs League 3rd Division, we are holding our own in 5th place as Cranleigh run away with the competition.

A fascinating nine Saturdays coming up, with all four XIs there, or thereabouts.

In the SWCL CHAMPIONSHIP the Women’s XI stand in 2nd place on 50 points, just 6 points behind Guildford CC Women, but with a game in hand. Not so much luck in the SWCL ELITE T20 competition though, where the Women’s XI have lost the two matches played so far.  Plenty of opportunity left, however, to make up ground.

Another ‘Beyond the call of duty’ example! 

Paul Eldridge was a reserve for Saturday’s 4th XI game at Holmwood Close vs. Ockley CC.  ‘Eldo’ turned up at the ground well before the start and volunteered his services as match umpire.  Sam Longstone, 4s skipper, unsurprisingly, gratefully accepted Eldo’s offer. The club, and Sam, wish to thank Eldo for his officiating, which, by all accounts was very good.

Thanks Eldo; a proper club member.

Weekend 10th/11th June 2023

Glorious weather produces a ‘Golden Saturday’ for the club, with all 4 league XIs winning.

At Cheam Road on Sunday, a club record was created during the Women’s 1st XI ‘Surrey Women’s Cricket League’ fixture versus Guildford CC’s Women.  

Sutton women won the game; but it was no ordinary win!

Congratulations go to Sam Hulcoop, who scored her first ever Century! Sam is also the first woman to score 100 for  Sutton Cricket Club.  Well played, Sam. (Scorecard: here.)

The newly installed Non-Turf Pitch at our second ground, Holmwood Close. Looks marvellous.

Congratulations to all involved with the installation, from planning for it, to fitting. A terrific addition to the playing facilities for all our members, especially the young.

Tuesday 6th June 2023

Entertaining Surrey Slam game tonight: Epsom CC v Sutton CC which Sutton won by 14-runs. Good cricket all-round, & excellent fielding. Sutton especially, took a number of superb catches; no names, no pack drill, but some great efforts

Sutton CC member, Rebecca Denman, has been selected for her first Surrey U18 county game, this coming Tuesday, May 30th, against Sussex, which takes place at the ‘Brighton Aldridge Community Academy Ground’, 11:00am start; [details here.]

Weekend 6th/7th/8th May

It’s almost a running gag this year that when Saturday comes, it’ll rain!  This Saturday was no different and sadly, all four XI’s games were abandoned, without a ball bowled.  Such disappointment, given the pleasant week that preceded this Saturday’s opening league fixtures.  Surely, we’ll play next Saturday….just don’t look at the weather forecasts though!

Opening weekend of 2023 cricket season decimated!

The heavy rainfall over the last couple of weeks brought an abrupt halt to any chance of meaningful cricket action at and away from the club over the weekend of 15th/16th April. The 1st XI’s game at Bromley CC, due to be played on Saturday, was cancelled on Friday evening, just as we sat down to the club’s Annual Dinner; and Sunday’s ECB National Cup game was called-off early last week, as were all our games due for Cheam Road and Holmwood Close.

The weather situation does look like improving this week; so, let’s hope we can start our 2023 season next weekend, in earnest.

SEASONAL AWARDS DISHED OUT AT CLUB DINNER

The Annual Dinner is the Club’s flagship event, held just before a new season’s start, and at which the previous season’s awards are presented. The Club’s members entertain friends and family, and guests from all over the local cricket fraternity.

This year’s Dinner, held in the Ken Ohlson Room at the Clubhouse, on Friday 14th April, was an extraordinarily successful ‘sell-out,’ with a superb menu enjoyed by all and presented beautifully by our friends, Tierney’s Caterers of Sutton. Thank you to all at Tierney’s.

Our main speaker was Huw Terbervill, Editor of The Cricketer magazine, (and Beddington CC), who gave an entertaining speech, concluding with an informative ‘Q&A’ session, both of which were well received by the guests. Our thanks to Huw Turbervill for speaking to the Club. We are grateful for the time and effort he took to share his thoughts and experiences with the Club. Thank you from us all.

Club captain, Sam Seadon, also spoke, eloquently, laying emphasis on the Club’s ethos and its determination to remain as one of the foremost clubs in Surrey, whilst encouraging all members to enjoy the sport. The Club President, and the Chair, both gave brief introductions and welcomes.

Presenting the awards was one of Sutton CC’s County pros, Josh Blake. The winners of the 2022 awards were as follows:

• The Henderson Award for most runs: Rehan Ratnasapabathy
• The Henderson Award for most wickets: Baj Ramalingam
• The Eaton Swaby All-Rounder Award: Baj Ramalingam
• The Joseph Lunn Award: George Duckworth.

Congratulations to all the award winners.

The Club are indebted to Matt Lewis and Dan Edwards, for all the time and effort they applied in organising such a splendid event; and to raffle ticket seller’s Dan & Pauline: top quality, helping raise over £750 for club funds; and to Pauline and Michelle, for managing the bar so effectively.

A great occasion. Looking forward to 2024 already!
