As one secondary basketball tournament wraps up, another begins, with the Surrey Fire Fighters’ Goodwill Senior Girls Basketball Classic and Surrey RCMP Basketball Classic lighting up gyms across the district.

The 21st-annual girls’ tournament began Tuesday, Jan. 3, and features 20 teams competing across the Axe and Ladder division draws. The finals for both divisions take place this Saturday, Jan. 7, at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary.

Sunday, Jan. 8, marks the start of the 31st-annual boys’ tournament, beginning at the Langley Events Centre and later hosted at several secondary schools from Jan. 11-14. Forty-eight boys teams will take to the court between the senior and junior divisions.

Both tournaments include teams from Clayton Heights, Earl Marriott, Enver Creek, Fleetwood Park, Frank Hurt, Fraser Heights, Grandview Heights, Guildford Park, Johnston Heights, Kwantlen Park, L.A. Matheson, Lord Tweedsmuir, North Surrey, Panorama Ridge, Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth, Salish, Semiahmoo, Sullivan Heights and Tamanawis secondary schools.

The Fleetwood Park Dragons are defending champions in both tournaments: last year, the girls won the Axe Division against Semiahmoo 68-45, while the FP boys won their first RCMP Classic tournament championship, unseating the previous champs, the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers, 87-81.

The Johnston Heights girls are also looking to repeat in the Ladder division, having beaten Fraser Heights last year 65-54.

Congratulations to all of our amazing student athletes for competing at the Surrey Fire Fighters’ Goodwill Senior Girls Basketball Classic and Surrey RCMP Basketball Classic – and best of luck in the finals!
