Mendon wins Red Devil Invitational

The Mendon softball team took first place at the Holton Red Devil Invitational held on Saturday.

The Mendon softball team won all three of its games at Holton on Saturday. 

The end result was the Red Devil Invitational championship with that 3-0 record. The Hornets knocked off Holton in the finals, 13-1. Prior that that, Mendon earned wins over Inland Lakes 15-2 and Hillman 10-2. 

In the finals, Mendon trailed 1-0 entering the fourth inning. There, the Hornets put up 10 runs to take a commanding lead. They would add three more in the sixth inning. 

Mattea Bingaman led the offense in that one, she belted three base hits and drove in four runs. Kaidee Gonser singled three times and doubled, she drove in one. Abby Butler added a single and a triple with three runs driven in for the game. 

Jadyn Samson, Carlie Doehring and Brielle Bailey each had two hits and drove in one. Lauren Schabes connected for two hits, Rowan Allen had one. Ally Butler was credited with an RBI in the game. 

Schabes picked up the win inside the circle, striking out 12. She allowed four hits. 

In Mendon’s win over Inland Lakes, the Hornets scored twice in each of the first two innings. Up 4-0, Mendon then plated nine in the third plus added one run in the fourth and fifth to seal it. 

Samson totaled four hits and drove in two. Gonser connected for three hits, ultimately driving in three runs. Schabes also had three hits, including two doubles, driving in two. 

Allen finished with two hits and one RBI. Ally Butler and Cienna Nightingale each drove in two runs while having one base hit. 

Bailey singled in a run. Doehring and Abby Butler both finished with one hit. 

Allen picked up the victory pitching with nine strikeouts in five innings. 

Schabes pitched Mendon to a win in the first game of the day, a 10-2 win over Hillman. She struck out 11 hitters in six innings of work while allowing four hits. 

At the plate, Mendon trailed 2-0 after two innings. The Hornets scored three times to take the lead in the third, then added five in the fourth and two in the fifth. 

Gonser registered three hits and drove in three runs. Schabes totaled two hits with one RBI. 

Doehring, Bailey and Nightingale each had a run-scoring hit. Samson also singled while walking twice.
