Both Lydia Boland and Kortnie Matz finished inside the Top 7 at the regional tune-up held in Flint on Sunday.

The Sturgis bowling programs are looking forward to the upcoming regionals on Friday.

The goal is qualifying for the state finals once again. So to help build toward that, the Trojans competed in the Flint Metro Bowling Conference regional tune-up meet held on Sunday.

There were two Lady Trojans who finished in the Top 7 for their division and were placed on the All-Tournament Team. Kortnie Matz fired games of 189 and 182 for a 371 series, this placed her third overall as an individual. Lydia Boland finished sixth overall, shooting games of 178 and 167 for a 345.

As a team, the Trojans qualified fifth. The knocked down 1,941 total pins covering four baker and two individual games. SHS finished with a 124, 112, 120, and 125 in baker action. Those individual games saw the Trojans shoot 698 and 762.

This put them into the knock-out stages, where they lost to Freeland 334 to 287 in a pair of baker games. Individually, Donna Henson-Bohlen shot a 266 (112-154), Kami Kimes added a 257 (143-114) and Morgan Baumeister shot a 221 (76-145).

“Both teams struggled in the opening of qualifying through the baker games. For the boys, they could not overcome the deficit,” Sturgis coach Scott Spahr said. “The ladies responded in singles and showed the grit we have been working to instill. Pleased with the effort today and feeling like we are ready to make a run this Friday at regionals. Going to be an exciting day.”

The boys missed the knockouts after finishing 10th in qualifying. They shot baker games of 150, 160, 152 and 138. They also added singles games of 845 and 880 for 2,325 total pins.
