2023 Women's Southeast Champions

Saratoga Invitational - Saratoga, NY

April 29-30, 2023

10 lanes of racing, two days, and at least a half dozen top-10 ranked programs all on one body of water.

Saratoga is arguably one of the most competitive regattas in the country. The racing is incredibly challenging, and while we are still navigating this rebuild year, there were many positives to take away. For starters, we brought home double the hardware from a year ago. The girls showed grit with many of our crews improving their speeds from day 1 to day 2. For instance our Varsity 8 posted the 10th fastest time on Saturday, and the 7th fastest time on Sunday. Our U16 8 continued their historic season by clipping the no. 2 team by open water twice as well as challenged the no. 1 team in both races against them. Our girls top four continued their strong showing with a second place finish in the varsity 4+, gold in the Junior 4x, and 26 second open water victory in the 4-. Two of these girls also won the gold in the pair late Sunday. Our 2nd varsity 8+ had an incredible bounce back performance winning the petite final. Our 3rd Varsity claimed the bronze both days in their racing. Additionally, we had freshman 4+ take the silver to that no. 1 team. Lastly, we had a girls novice quad with very limited experience. This boat somehow caught a boat stopping crab at the start, fell immediately back, then rowed through enough crews to steal the bronze. All around great racing this will give us a leg up at the Regional Championships in a few weeks!

Head of the Hooch - Chattanooga, TN

November 4-6, 2022

We are the champions! A program best, 22 boats contributed to our team winning the Head of the Hooch Team Trophy. Those 22 boats were represented by all four facets of our competitive club (novice boys, novice girls, varsity boys, and varsity girls). Quite literally, the definition of teamwork. I have never been more proud of our team, given their youthful and inexperienced state, than I am for what they accomplished this fall. We continue to see promise and growth and look forward to seeing what they can do in the coming season.

Gold - Girl's Lightweight 8, Girl's U17 4+, and Girl's U15 1x.

Silver - Girl's Varsity 8+, Mixed U17 8+

Music City Head Race - Nashville, TN

October 29th, 2022

Coming off our strong showing at the Head of the Charles, our Varsity 8+ girls looked to lead our entire squad to yet another strong regional regatta: Music City Head Race. The Varsity 8+ and U17 8+ A boat got the day started right by posting the 1st and 4th fastest women's eight times of the entire regatta.  Following those wins, our Novice 4+ kept the morning going strong with a commanding 55 second win. While we are not a traditional sculling program, our 2x's (doubles) raced incredibly well in the most entered event of the regatta, going 13, 15, and 17th out of the 27. The afternoon demonstrated our commitment to hard training as our 4x (quad), Varsity (U19) 4+, and U17 4+ all won their respective events. Especially noteworthy was our U17 4+ B who fell short of reaching the podium at Secret City, surged to a second place giving us a 1-2 punch atop the event.  Just as we did at Secret City, our 2- (pair) A and B entries flexed their muscles by going 1-2 again. Rounding out the afternoon, our novice 8+ finished in 2nd place and our three lightweight entries went 1st, 2nd, and 4th handling the field easily. Great team showing again!

For a developing men's team, hard work paid off at the Music City Head Race, with a third place finish in the men's u17 4+ for the same group that placed 3rd in the U16 4+ the month before up in Oak Ridge. A second place finish in the men's youth 1x and a resounding win in the men's lightweight 4+ rounded out the day, with an honorable mention to a much improved row and finish from the Men's U17 8+ that finished 4th in a crowded field.

This young and hungry men's squad is very much looking forward to the Hooch this weekend, with the understanding that the work they do now and the process they are taking part in is the foundation for a fast and successful spring.

Our Foundations squad is on the rise!  With 16 middle schoolers competing in Nashville finishing 3rd and 4th in their event!  The future is bright at SA!

Women's SA team news

October 21-23, 2022

Our Women's V8+ accomplished all three lofty goals finishing 9th out of 89 boats for The Charles!

From the coaches: "The best compliment I’ve received in a while came this weekend from a former collegiate coach, 'your kids are tough and filthy. Everything about them, your culture, it fires me up.'"

We should be in an absolute rebuild this year, yet our incredible girls have somehow managed to pick up where last year’s squad left off, our Varsity 8 posting a program first, top-10 finish at Head of the Charles!  Thanks to the toughness, commitment and work ethic, these girls were somehow able to outperform all of SA’s past varsity eights. I had three lofty goals for our crew, and they met everyone single one of them.
Check. Check. And Check.

Top 10 nationally ranked women’s program… still.   Absolutely amazing.

US Rowing Youth Nationals - Sarasota, FL

June 9-12, 2022

St. Andrew Rowing Club has accomplished club history this season with our Women’s team!  SA participated in the 2022 USRowing Youth National Championships June 9-12th in Sarasota, FL. This regatta brings in the best of the best from all over the country, SA was a top qualifier from the Southeast Region.  All teams must qualify by participating in the area youth regional championships.  Over 3,500 rowers participate from 210 clubs nationwide in as many as 43 events over the 4 day schedule.  This year SA entered both the 1V8+ and the 2V8+, a V2- and both the 4V+ and the U174+.

The athletes came prepared to do time trials on Thursday. This determines placement on Friday through Sunday.  All of SA’s boats qualified for the A/B Finals on Sunday, racing the fastest  youth clubs in the nation.  Our first and second Varsity 8+ both had the best performance in team history!  The 1V8+ placed 9th in the nation and the 2V8+ finished 11th in the nation.  SA’s Varsity 4+ ended the weekend with a 3rd place national standing! And, the U174+ finished in 3rd place nationally as well!  SA is so very excited for our athletes and all they have accomplished this season!

St. Andrew Rowing Club participated in the Secret City Head race in Oakridge TN on Melton Hill Lake.  The race is a 5000m race with challenging steering including turns and bridges.

SA left Tennessee earning 9 first place gold medals, 3 silver  medals and 2 bronze medals in our first head race of the season!  After graduating several seniors to D1 rowing programs last season, SA is rebuilding in numbers on both the men and the women’s teams this year.  SA entered three Women’s 8+ boats at Secret City this year sweeping each event!  The Women’s U168+, WY8+ and the U17 8+ all came in first place!  Our young, growing men’s team came out of the race with a silver medal in the Men’s Y2- and a bronze medal in the U16 4+ race!  SA is off to an amazing start of the Fall Season!

Saratoga Springs Invitationals - Saratoga, NY

April 30-May 1, 2022

SA had the honor of being invited to participate in the Saratoga Springs invitationals for junior rowers.  This is America's largest sprint race with 10 lanes of 1500 meter racing.  Top crews from the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and the Midwest participate yearly.  With over 1200 entries and up against some very large, established Northeastern teams, the 20 young female rowers SA flew up to New York were up against some heavy competition and very fast rowing.  SA did not disappoint!  All our rowers came back with a medal!

Lake Lanier/Peachtree City Scrimmage

April 30th, 2022

Meanwhile, on the same weekend as the Saratoga Springs Invitationals, the rest of the SA team had a scrimmage with Peachtree City, Lake Lanier Rowing Club and Westminster Rowing Club.   The Men's team took wins in the pair and single races and came in second in the double and Novice 4+.   Our Women placed first in the U17 4-(a), Novice 8+ and a single. They placed 2nd in a single and 3rd place in the U19/U17 4+, U172+ and the U174-(b).  A successful day for our rowers gaining more valuable racing experience before heading into the Southeast Regionals.

Dogwood Juniors Championship - Oak Ridge, TN

April 23-24, 2022

Dogwood is known as the premier test of ability amongst our young rowers across the Southeast taking place in Oak Ridge, TN.  This year SA came away with more than a handful of medals and additional successful experience for our younger rowers on the team.  For our men's team the competition was high, and many of our young men had not raced in a two day regatta before.  While the pure results for the men were probably highlighted by a strong finals appearance from a very young men's 2- (falling just short of the podium), we can say that all of the men's boats rowed well and raced up to their current capabilities.  The rowing is starting to come together, and now the guys have a much fuller picture of the speed out there in the Southeast.

Our women's team had a very successful weekend earning Gold medals in the V8+, 2V8+, Open 8+, V4+, U174+, 2V4+, V4-, and the 2-.  They received Silver medals in the 3V8+ and U168+ races.   Our SA girls swept the 4s for the second year in a row as well as earning the Governor's Cup for a second straight year.  An incredibly successful weekend of racing also awarded them the "Top performers of the week" by Rower's Choice.   Check out our Captains' interview on Instagram for Rower's Choice.

SA Rowing Club vs Asheville Rowing Association - April 10, 2022

SA Men and Women's Team participated in a successful race day at the Clemson University Boat house on Lake Hartwell.  SA came in first in the majority of the races participating in WU17 4, MV4/WV8, W2V/3V, WU16/U17 8, WV4, W3V4, W2V4, MU15 8/U17 4 with crossing tailwinds and increasing motorboat wake throughout the day.

Percy Priest - Nashville, TN

March 26, 2022

Percy Priest Sprints proved to be a successful day for our SA athletes in Nashville.  The Varsity Women's team came in prepared and determined beating a favored team in unfavorable water conditions.  The Men's team, almost entirely on the younger side this year and a shorthanded crew this weekend, pulled a respectable 4th out of 8 entries in the Men's U19 4x and 5th out of 9 entries in the Men's U17 4x.  Our younger women rowers are showing much promise as well with two of their 4's winning  events and the U17 8+ bringing home the bronze!  And, both the men's and women's team combined were able to bring home the gold and silver medals in the mixed 8+ races!  The small boat races for both the Men and Women's teams were unfortunately cancelled due to wind/water conditions.

Head of the Charles - Boston, MA

October 22-24, 2021

What an amazing result for SA!

The Head of The Charles Regatta was founded in 1965 and is the world’s largest rowing race, regularly fielding more than 11,000 athletes from around the world to compete in a full line-up of sculling and sweep rowing events.  This year, St. Andrew Rowing club entered both a women’s youth 4+ and an 8+ with ages ranging from 14-18.

In a head race, teams race on the same course at different starting times and the team with the best time wins. The Head of the Charles is a three-mile course. Races begin at Boston University’s DeWolfe Boathouse and the finish line is three miles upstream at the Eliot Bridge in Brighton.

Not just anyone can enter the Head of the Charles, as with the Boston Marathon, teams must qualify.  For sculling, you must have finished in the top 25% in the previous HOCR race and with sweeping, in the top half based on entries.  SA has now entered a few HOCR races and because both SA’s boats finished in the top 20 this year, SA is eligible to compete in 2022!  Our Women’s youth 8+ finished 12th out of 76 entries and our Women’s youth 4+ finished 20th out of 84 entries!  We will see you at the Head of the Charles in 2022!
