BOWLING GREEN – The Pulaski County High School boys golf team capped off a program record-breaking season by finishing tenth in the KHSAA Boys Golf State Tournament at the rain soaked, cold and windy Bowling Green Country Club his past weekend.

This is the first time in program history that Pulaski advanced to the second day of the two-day state tournament event. After the first day, Pulaski was ranked fifth in the state tournament and only 18 strokes behind the leaders, and eventual winners St. Xavier.

Pulaski’s first-round score of 311 was paced by senior Kellen Wilson who shot 75, freshman Grant Norris shot a 77, senior Justin Mayfield scored a 78, and senior Taylor Hurt came in with an 81.

The course became so soaked due to all the rain that play was stopped around 4:50 p.m., on Friday, with six teams still on the course. Play resumed early on Saturday morning for the groups to complete their rounds. After completion of day one, Pulaski found themselves tied with Louisville Trinity.

Pulaski teed off with West Jessamine, the defending state champion, and Trinity when the second round began.

“All our players were fine until senior Taylor Hurt received incorrect information on a ball which entered into ground under repair, which lead to a disastrous hole from which he never recovered,” explained Pulaski head coach Michael Winget.

Pulaski was 14 strokes off their first-round pace, and finished the second day with a team total of 325, which dropped them into 10th place for the tournament.

In the second round, Pulaski was led by Wilson, who birdied his final hole, to shot 79. Norris also carded a 79. Chris Blount shot an 80. Mayfield carded an 87, and Hurt finished up with an 89.

St. Xavier won the title by a wide margin over McCracken County.

Owensboro Catholic junior John Augustine won the individual title with a two-day total 6-under-par 138. Pulaski’s Kellen Wilson finished tied for 34th with a two-day total of 10-over-par 154. Grant Norris tied for 44th with a 12-over-par 156, and Justin Mayfield tied for 67th place with a 21-over-par 165.
