Network looking for a net gain

Telford and Wrekin Badminton Network are looking to net new backers to help to grow the sport in Shropshire.

The Network was set up in 2014 with support from Badminton England and consists of representatives from local badminton clubs, Telford and Wrekin Council and the County Sports partnership, Energize Shropshire.

The partnership worked together to deliver its development plan for 2015 and already a new club has been formed at Oakengates Leisure Centre. Coach education is being initiated to help grow the workforce, while volunteer training and local competition opportunities have been provided with club/school links now being developed.

Badminton England handed the Network a grant of £2,400 for 2015, but unfortunately this will not be repeated in 2016 with new financial assistance now being sought.

Network chairman Clive Knight said: "Badminton is a social and competitive sport played by many people of all ages and abilities throughout Telford and Wrekin. The network is in its infancy, but already stepping stones are being laid to make the sport more sustainable.

"Finance is regrettably a key issue if we are to grow and deliver new activities, the Network is therefore looking for a sponsor interested in helping it to grow its links with the local community through engagement with a healthy and proactive sport, and the Network feels that there would be mutual benefits from a sponsor becoming involved with our sport."
