British & Irish Freestyle - 15*** to 16*** Septem ber 2007 - reported by Sean Phillips

The British & Irish Freestyle Tournament, being hosted by Limerick Draughts Club, will be held
at the Kilmurry Lodge hotel, Castletroy, Limerick on Saturday, 15.9.07, and on Sunday, 16.9.07.
The Kilmurry Lodge is located at the Kilmurry Roundabout, which is on the main road into Limerick from Dublin.
Some players will remember this venue, as this was where the 2005 Irish Championships took place. There will be
5 rounds per day, with 1 game per round, and possible repairing of opponents in the final rounds. It is planned to
play the competition in two divisions. The entry fee will be €10, with a reduced fee of €5 for under-18’s.
The prize money will be financed by the entry fees and by the interest from the Oldbury Fund.

Each player will be given 45 minutes per person per game on the clock to play out each game. This means that the
sessions will be scheduled to start at 10 am, at 11.30 am, at 2 pm, at 3.30 pm and at 5 pm each day. Half point byes, for
players who will not be in time for the first round, will only be available if Sean Phillips is notified and given the entry
fee no later than the day before the tournament. The best placed Irish player in this tournament will be recognized as the
next Official Challenger to Hugh Devlin for the Irish GAYP Matchplay Title. The next paragraph contains a list
of accommodation, which is reasonably near the venue. Please bring clocks.

M e Cosker w ins Am erican Y onth Cham pionship

Congratulations to Shane Me Cosker who won the Arthur Niederhoffer US National Youth Championship and a top prize of
$3000. The event was held over the week-end o f July 21st - 22nd at the Plaza Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada. Shane is the current
Northern Ireland Open Champion and is the highest rated teenage player worldwide. This event was played at under-21 years
limit and attracted America's finest youth talent.

Shane also finished in third place in the US M asters Championship following the Youth Championship. The event was held
at Plaza Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, U SA from 23rd-27th July 2007. The event was ran over three divisions o f play.
The Masters event was w on by Lubabalo Kondlo (South Africa) ahead o f John W ebster (USA) and Shane Me Cosker (N. Irl).
In the M ajor division Tommy Canning (N. Irl) finished in a tie for 6th place. This was an outstanding performance for both players.

Germ an Open Cham pionship 2007 - reported by Ingo Zachos

Held in Dortmund - 18* and 19* August 2007. The final positions were as follows:
1. Liam Stephens, Ireland 12 points, 2 Bernard Coll, Scotland 11 points, 3. Ingo Zachos, Germany 11 points,
4. Thomas Wien, Germany 5 points, 5. Irene Paetzold, Germany 1 p o in t.

The German national trophies were awarded to Ingo Zachos who w on his first national title (altough the title wiimer o f 2006, Dennis
Pawlek was unable to participate due to working commitments in Thailand) and Irene Paetzold who w on her second German Ladies
title in a row. Liam Stephens, who was the only player undefeated, also recieved his trophy as German Open winner a second time
in a row, thanked Ingo for organising the event and promised to defend his title in 2008.
As 1 was already German National Champion and as he w on our head-to-head encounter the second place was also awarded for the
second time in a row to Bernard Coll. Finally, as national champion and referee, and in agreement with all participants, 1 decided to
award the trophy for the third place to Thomas Wien, as we agreed not to have double prizes.

After the event was closed, the German National Champions decided to play a small 3 move event with om guests Liam Stephens
and Bernard Coll and they proved their superiority in this style.
Especially Bernard, who emerged as the deserved winner, received quite a few congratulations from his friends
My thanks to all that participated and supported us, especially to Jack Coll, who missed his flight to Dortmund due to a car accident.

East o f Scotland 2007 - reported by Sean Phillips

The East o f Scotland was held in Kirkwall, Orkney over six rounds on Sat., 16.6.07, and Sun., 17.6.07. The competition attracted
12 entrants, most o f whom are members o f Aberdeen Draughts Club, and there were three Orkney based players. The winner o f the
tournament for the fifth time in succession was Cohn Young. This was his ninth East o f Scotland title. Cohn had a 3 point lead
going into the final round against Canno Baikie, who needed two wins to become champion. Carmo won the first game o f this sixth
round after 3 hours. It was Colin’s first loss in the tomnament. A draw in the final game seemed first place for Colin Young and
second place for Carmo Baikie. This was a great achievement by Cohn Young, who was not able to eat during the days o f the
tournament, because o f a stomach upset. Sean Phillips and Graham Young were the next best placed players on fifteen points, after
playing some mixed rounds. Lamont Inkster was the highest placed Orkney based player on fourteen points. Also on fourteen
points was Anthony Rose, who was the tournaments most improved player. A special prize was presented to Nils Lokke.
A special word o f thanks to the local organizers, who provided dinners to the competitors on the Satmday and Sunday.
Preliminaiy word is that the East o f Scotland ty. is likely to be back in Orkney in 2008.

Scottish Open C ham pionship 2007 - reported by Sean Phillips

The 2007 Scottish Open was held at the Town Hall in Stonehaven from Monday, 16.7.07, to Friday, 20.7.07. It was
won by Tom Watson, who fought off close competition from Aberdeen’s Jimmy Grant and from Ireland’s Frank Moran.
From an Irish point of view, Frank Moran’s performance was the story of the competition. Frank has been playing
brilliantly in international team matches, but this was his best individual tournament to date. Danny Oliphant and Colin
Young were the next placed finishers on level points. Carlow’s Patricia Breen won sixth prize, breaking even in her
rounds with the top three players, winning games against Tom Watson and Jimmy Grant. There were 14 players in the
‘A ’ section, which included Irish players Sean McElkenny, Francis McNally and Sean Phillips. The prize winners in
this division were T‘ Tom Watson (Glasgow) 29, 2"‘‘ Jimmy Grant (Aberdeen) 28, Frank Moran (Castlebar) 28,
4* Danny Oliphant 23, 5* Colin Young (Stonehaven) 23, 6* Patricia Breen (Carlow) 21.

The prize winners in the ‘B ’ section were T‘ Willie Anderson (Aberdeen) 28, 2"^* Con Boyle (Dublin & Donegal) 26 ,
3'^ Hamish Budge (Halkirk) 26, 4* Graham Young (Stonehaven) 26, 5* Jack Coll (Glasgow) 26, 6* Anthony Rose
(Frazerborough) 25. Sixteen players took part in this division and other Irish players in this section were Mick O’Dowd
and Liam Harkins. A huge debt is owed to the Youngs, who ran this tournament, and who treated the competitors to a
party at the Saint Leonard’s hotel on the Wednesday evening. Ian Caws did his usual great job as Controller of the
tournament. The Scottish Open is likely to be back in Stonehaven in July 2009.

English Open C ham pionship 2007

The English Open Championships were held at the Strathmore Hotel, Morecambe, Lancashire, from Mon 14th - Fri 18th
May 2007. This important event attracted an entry of 28 players. It was won by Scottish Grandmaster Jimmy Grant from
Aberdeen, who won this title for the 1st time. Runner-up was Scottish Grandmaster Tom Watson (Glasgow), with Welsh
International Master Lindus Edwards in third place. Northern Ireland's Francie Me Nally (Toombridge) put in a
tremendous performance to finish in 4th place. 5th place also went north of the border to Scotland's Danny Oliphant.
Results: 1st J. Grant 32 pts, 2nd T. Watson 30 pts, 3rd L. Edwards 24pts.

Alex Bruce Smith (remembered)

Alex Bruce Smith died in Stonehaven during January this year at the age of ninety two. He came from a farming
background, before joining the Royal Air Force, and spending several years in the Armed Forces. Alex took part in
World War Two, during which he was shipped to places all over the World where heavy fighting had taken place. He
used to joke about how the conflict would ease off just before he would arrive in these places. Alex Smith was a fitness
fanatic and a champion athlete, who disliked smoking, drinking and drugs long before modem opinion caught up with
him. Until four years ago, Alex held a part time job in a shop, where he would get up at 7 am to do a newspaper round.
Alex was in good health, and maintained his work ethic until he suffered a stroke about four years before his death.

In his later years, Alex became involved in competitive Draughts when he placed an advertisement in a local newspaper
looking for Draughts players. Colin Young responded to this. After taking some beatings from Alex, Colin improved,
and they started playing at Aberdeen Draughts Club along with Graham Young. Later on, Alex Smith took part in
several tournaments, including Irish Championships and Northern Ireland Championships. It was during the 2001 Irish
Championship in Carlow that Alex played his famous challenge match with P.J. Furey during the evenings. Alex also
played for Scotland during two Home International tournaments. He was delighted to be played against Patricia Breen
during the match against the Republic of Ireland in 2000.

Alex loved Draughts, and he built up a collection of thousands of carefully handwritten texts of games.
He was a hospitable man, and he should be remembered as the man who brought Colin & Graham Young into
the game as players and organizers of Scoftish Draughts.
He is survived by his three sons James, Stanley & Andrew, and by his daughter Joan.
