Mayfield 60 – 12 Dewsbury Celtic

Date published: 02 October 2013

The Mayfield juggernaut rolled on on Saturday as they demolished yet another side at the Mayfield Sports Centre.

Dewsbury Celtic were this week's victims as, after a mediocre first half performance Mayfield ignited right from the beginning of the second forty minutes as a short Sam Butterworth kick off was gathered by Lewis Sheridan who scooted 30 metres to begin a roll which saw his team score five tries in a ten minute spell of scintillating rugby.

Dewsbury held their own in the first half, restricting Mayfield to a 16 – 6 half time lead through tries from Joe Qanuici, Paul Brearley and Rob Kershaw, along with two Lewis Sheridan conversions.

This was to say the least a pedestrian first half, although there were glimpses of what was to come with flashes of inspiration from Butterworth, Sheridan, Jack Samson and Brearley to name but a few.

The last ten minutes of the half saw the home side picking up the pace and Dewsbury struggled to compete.

Both wingers, Kershaw and Kristian Duffy plus full back Jack Samson did their best to keep the team on the front foot with productive scoots from dummy half and they were backed up well by Liam Whalley and Luke Samson from the second row.

The second half was all about Mayfield as they ran in try after try each one seemingly better than the last, with all the training ground work coming to fruition.

Todd O’Brien, Butterworth, Brearley and Sheridan ran the show for Mayfield with most of the play coming through these players, but also, once again the pack was awesome punishing the opposition in attack and then destroying them in the tackle with a brilliant display of defence, with Nick Hargreaves and Luke Samson prominent in this department.

Joe Qanuici and Aidy Gleeson were in fine form as the starting props and there was no let up for Dewsbury as these two were replaced by the in form Mark Biggins and Si Moore.

There isn’t a team in the division who could have lived with Mayfield in this form, this was the 12th win on the run and the sixth game on the run were they have topped the forty point mark.

As pleasing as the performance and the result were, the biggest cheer of the day went to Declan Sheridan who at the age of 16 made his debut on 46 minutes and had an immediate impact as he combined with brother Lewis to carve openings in the in the flailing defence. With young players like this coming through the future for Mayfield is certainly looking bright.
