Moama Bowling Club's nine-day May Carnival came to a close on the weekend. The winners included:
Mixed Fours: Cheryl Doherty, David Lonnie, Carmel Simpson and Neville Varcoe of Moama BC.
Ladies Pairs: Kate Bush and Di Hands.
Men’s Pairs: Troy Mansbridge and Kevin Anderson of Moama BC.
Mixed Pairs: Ray Brown and Anne Miles of YMGBC.
Mixed Triples: Team Beryl Murray of Mathoura.
Men’s Fours: Team Winston Brackley of Yarraville/Footscray BC.
On Monday, May 17, 26 players contested three games of seven ends of indoor bowls.
The winners on 44 points were Faye Leahy (skip), Phyllis Eley (third) and Kelly Orchard (second).
Runners-up with 42 points were Rhys Jenkins (skip), Julie Van Lee (third) and Myrle Clancy.
Consolation prizes went to Val Gaylor and Paula Markin.
Echuca
Jackpot Pairs was held on Tuesday, May 11, because of Moama Carnival Overflow using the greens.
Forty bowlers attended in ideal conditions with fast-running greens. The winners were Ivan Hicks and Daryl LaVelle from A. Costello and partner, with the best one game going to John Dinsdale and Bill Cook.
Members are reminded that the club's annual general meeting is to be held on Wednesday, May 26, at 7pm.
Nominations for positions close at 5pm tonight (Wednesday, May 19) and there are several vacancies to be filled.
The AGM will be preceded by a special general meeting to change the club name to Echuca Bowls Club (75 percent must be in favour for this to change), change of club logo and change of uniform.
The club is proposing to hold a charity day on Saturday, May 29, at 1pm.
There will be prizes and fun games. Everyone is welcome, with all proceeds going to ERH Wellness Centre.
Lockington
The ladies held their annual general meeting last Tuesday with strong attendance.
Lady president Anne Lowrie welcomed everyone. She was re-elected for a further term as president, with Denise Gilmore accepting the role as vice-president.
Secretary is Bev Brereton while Pauline Humbert retains the treasurer's position. Lorraine Appleby is the tournament secretary.
On Wednesday the Scrounge event attracted a quality field, with Anne Lowrie blitzing the field by scoring a mammoth 71 points to keep at bay Ray Hanson and Lorraine Appleby.
Other rink winners were Russell Shawcross and Brian Kinnane.
Scrounge begins at 1pm, with names to be listed prior to 12.45pm. All are welcome.
The Friday night barbecues are in storage until August.
The club will hold its annual general meeting on Monday, June 7, starting at 8pm.
The Bowls Vic State Championships concluded on Monday, May 10, after a week of memorable bowling from all concerned. Congratulations to the members of the Bendigo East Bowling Club on a remarkable effort in staging this annual event.
The Bendigo/Campaspe Region bowlers fared well over the competition. In the women's state triples, the Kangaroo Flat team of Desmae Budd, Gwen Waegeli and Susan Howes (s) were impressive in winning the first round against Ruth Phillps 19-15, but unfortunately lost to the eventual winner Lisa Phillips in the next round 17-14. Phillips defeated Judy Nardella (Metro West) in the final.
In the men's state pairs, Glen Dorward and Barry Brennan (s) from Moama were in demolition mode in their first round match against Chris Mitchell (Mildura) to win 26-11.
In the next round they lost to Shane O'Loughlan (Strazelecki) 13-16. The pairs final went to ‘young guns’ Cooper Westcombe and Jarryd Davies (s) with a 19-13 win over their Mornington Peninsula opponents.
Mathoura
Mathoura Bowling Club would like to pass on its deepest condolences to Rod Werner and family after the passing of Rod's father. It is a sad time for all and know our thoughts are with you at this time.
The Gulpa Creek Invitation Open Fours, sponsored by Tongala & District Community Bank Branch, Mathoura Agency and Bendigo Bank, will be held on Saturday, June 12, and Sunday, June 13.
On Saturday, three games of 12 ends will be played with a 10am start.
On Sunday, two games of 12 ends will be contested with a start time of 9.30am.
There is a best winning margin prize during Sunday's games.
The tournament entry fee is $80 per team, with the total prize money worth $3200. However, prize money is subject to a minimum 14 entries.
Players can purchase their own lunch from the bowlers’ menu.

Playing at Moama on Friday, May 14, a Mathoura team consisting of Jenny Chalmers (lead), Beryl Murray (third) and Lindsay Vallance (skip) won the Bob Gilmore Mixed Triples. Well done to all the players, and to Moama for a well-run day.
