Double titles for Graham, Rebecca

Ayr tournament joy for top bowling pair

Graham McKinlay and Rebecca Houston toasted doubles in the 85th Ayr Bowling Tournament.

Northfield man McKinlay won the gents singles, beating Junior Muir ( Annbank) 21- 7 in the final.

And that added to the mixed pairs he won earlier with Alison Lamont ( Coylton) against Claire Johnstone ( Auchinleck) and Craig Barbour ( Sorn).

Rebecca teamed up with Ross Gouldstone ( Troon Portland) to win the junior pairs final, sponsored by Peter Wilson and Sons. They beat Lewis Rennie and Adam Cairnie from ( Stranraer Westend) in a high standard final.

Rebecca also won the junior girls’ singles, beating Kirsty Gargan from Oban in the final.

Claire McCurdie ( Forehill) won the ladies singles, beating Anne Brown ( Newton Park).

The junior boys’ singles was won by George Robertson, 13, from Ochiltree who beat Jamie Noon, 11, from Newton Park.

Elizabeth Reid ( Craigie) who skipped the Scottish triples last week, partnered Nancy Warwick ( Carnwarth) to win the ladies pairs against Isobel McKnight ( Maidens) and Maureen Shimmons ( Annbank).

The gents pairs went to Jim Yuille and Kevin Dempster ( Biggar) who beat Michael Kelly and Alex Higgins ( Stranraer). Jim won a set of Taylor Bowls in the raffle.

The Tommy Campbell Senior Singles was won by Colin Smith ( Northfield) to make it two in a row. In the final, Colin beat Tommy Getgood, who was representi­ng a major sponsor, Citadel Taxis.

Money was raised for Ayr Hospice which was presented to Tilly Moore to add to her fund raising. Tournament Directors are happy to announce that Peter Wilson and Sons have agreed to be a major sponsor for the next three years. This is along with Jack High Insurance, Sheena Thom Catering and Martin & White Joiners.

The directors thank all companies, bowlers, markers, umpires and green keeping staff who supported the tournament.

Entry forms are available for next year’s tourney which runs from July 30 to August 4. Crooksmoss won the McLean Bowl Final with a shot difference of (+ 19).

Runners- up were Northfield on (+ 11) with Seafield third with (- 30). Crooksmoss president David Brown received the trophy from Ayr Trophies president David Irving.

The postponed Darley Hay Top Ten Final between Craigie and Seafield will be played on Monday at Hawkhill BC ( 6.15 pm), while the McDonald Agnew also begins next week.

Monday ( 6.15pm): Hawkhill 2 v Forehill 2 ( at Crooksmoss), Peter Boyle 2 v Prestwick 2 ( at Crooksmoss), Hawkhill v Kincaidsto­n 2 ( at Wattfield), Newton Park v Ayr 2 ( at Prestwick), Newton Park 2 v Northfield 2 ( at Forehill).

Tuesday ( 6.15 pm): Ayr v Craigie ( at Wattfield), Northfield v Seafield 2 ( at Prestwick), Prestwick v Seafield ( at Forehill).

The Bowls Scotland Super Series pairs finals will be held at National Bowling Cent re on Saturday and Sunday.

Lorna Smith and Claire Johnston will play Allison Lamont and Sharon Robertson at 1.30pm.

Sam Watson and John Candlish play Gary and Mark Kelsey while Blair Davidson and Johnny Carswell take on Roy Borthwick and Jack McNab, both at 10.30am.

Auchinleck Indoor Bowling Club will open for the season on Monday. The AGM follows on Wednesday, August 16 at 7pm.

Opening cabaret / buffet will be held on Friday, September 1 at 7.30pm with entertainm­ent by Little Miss Diva. Tickets £ 10.

Day Leagues for season 2017- 18 will start on Monday, September 3 with evening leagues the following week.

There is a new format for Monday morning league which has changed from gents fours to an open triples league. Reduced membership fees for new members.
